Zen

What does an honest cop do when his bosses are on the side of the lawbreakers? Outwitting prosecutors, politicians, mobsters, kidnappers and killers, Detective Aurelio Zen brings justice to modern-day Italy. Rufus Sewell stars as Zen in three episodes based on the popular mysteries by Michael Dibden. In episode 1, Vendetta, airing July 17th, a killer is on a vendetta-fuelled rampage against those who wrongly imprisoned him, including a cop who had almost nothing to do with it: Zen. In Cabal, episode 2 airing July 24th, a disgraced aristocrat jumps off a bridge. Or was he pushed? The Ministry of Justice wants a ruling of suicide, while a powerful prosecutor hints that Zen had better start looking for the murderer. The series concludes on July 31st with Ratking. When a wealthy industrialist and political party funder is kidnapped, the Ministry of Justice wants Zen to get the hostage back alive at any cost.

Independence Daze: A History of July 4th Everybody knows that July Fourth celebrates our nation’s beginnings. But for the first 94 years of our existence, the Fourth wasn’t an official holiday at all. The Declaration of Independence itself sat untended in a dusty archive for 150 years. So how did Independence Day become the holiest day on our secular calendar? And why do we observe it with hot dogs, fireworks and mattress sales? In this hour, the History Guys explore the origins and curiosities of July Fourth. They reveal the holiday’s radical roots, and look how the Declaration’s meaning has changed over time. They also consider how the Declaration’s messages about liberty and equality have been embraced by the descendents of slaves. And as always, they take calls from BackStory listeners looking to the past to understand the America of today. “Independence Daze: A History of July 4th,” a BackStory presentation, airs Monday, July 4 at Noon, and again at 10 p.m. on AM 1370/FM-HD91.5-2

1370 Connection Forums & AM 1370 Specials State of Re:Union: Miami, FL airs Sunday, July 3 at 10 p.m. Dubbed the “Magic City” for its stunning growth rate and rapid proliferation of high-rise skyscrapers, Miami is also the third poorest city in the nation, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2004 numbers. If you own a store in South Beach, your customers are equally likely to be billionaires as they are homeless people. In this place of class, racial and cultural juxtapositions, SOTRU has an hour of stories of Miamians reaching out from their enclaves to create community across those lines. The Capitol Steps: Politics Takes a Holiday, Independence Day Edition airs Monday, July 4 at 1 p.m. and 11 p.m. Heard any good Bin Laden jokes lately?...oh. Well, have you heard them put to music? After turning down requests to be Muammar Gaddafi’s official name speller and publicist, and after a brief episode of royal wedding fever, the Capitol Steps have unveiled their new number starring Osama Bin Laden singing “Under the Sea.” They also began their campaign to have Joe Biden appear in public much more frequently (for comedy purposes) in “You Can’t Hide This Biden Guy.” Help celebrate your country by helping us make fun of it.

States of Marriage airs Sunday, July 10 at 10 p.m. Same-sex marriage is one of the more controversial issues of our time. This program examines how several states have approached legal recognition for gay and lesbian couples. We examine the divisive civil unions precedent in Vermont and how it set the stage for a marriage law in Massachusetts. Advocates on both sides of the issue explain their political and legal strategies to convince voters and courts of their cause, and we see the results of that debate in California, Iowa and Maine. America Abroad: Roots of the Arab Spring airs Sunday July 24 at 10 p.m. New Unemployment and anemic economies were fire-starters in the demonstrations that spread across the Arab world earlier this year. And while the Arab Spring may have toppled regimes, bread and butter issues continue to plague the region. Democracy alone won’t be enough to deal with a simple demographic Achilles’ heel - nearly a quarter of Arabs under 30 are jobless. In this edition of America Abroad we speak to Arab youth searching for work in Yemen and we travel to Morocco to hear from young people who’ve postponed marriage until they can save up their Dirhams.
