Dear Friends, When you think of WXXI and our education efforts, our children’s TV line-up probably comes to mind. Our Norm Silverstein PBS Ready to Learn programs, such as Sesame Street, Curious George and our newest series, Peg + Cat, are designed to help prepare our youngest viewers for learning as they enter school. Perhaps you think of our live call-in show, Homework Hotline, where kids throughout New York State get help with their homework over the air and through our partnership with Dial-a-Teacher. You may also be familiar with our VITAL NY service, which gives students and teachers instant access to tens of thousands of classroom-ready digital resources, including videos, games, images and lesson plans to improve student engagement and understanding. Our work in the education arena encompasses more than just toddlers and school-aged children. WXXI’s “Educational Outreach Center” provides workshops for teachers, parents and caregivers on how to use our programming to enhance learning in and out of school. WXXI’s FAST FORWARD NY video on-demand service helps hundreds of adults throughout our region achieve their High School Equivalency, improve their English skills, and increase workforce readiness. WXXI is also the New York State Education Department’s official Regional Adult Education Network (RAEN). The RAEN provides research-based training and technical advice to adult literacy agencies throughout the area to help improve their student outcomes. Outside the classroom, WXXI hosts community events for lifelong learners. Our free “Community Cinema” series, held monthly at the Little Theatre, is a public education and civic engagement initiative that features screenings of independent films, along with panel discussions. I encourage you to attend this month’s film – The State of Arizona, which looks at the divisive battle over illegal immigration in Arizona (you can read more about the film on the next page). In addition to Community Cinema, The Little hosts independent films, documentary screenings and group discussions. It also serves as an official venue for numerous film festivals including the Rochester Teen Film Fest, ImageOut, and Greentopia. Whether it’s children’s programming, our prime-time schedule, a film at The Little, news and public affairs or music on the radio, WXXI strives to educate, inform and inspire the young and the young at heart. What will you learn from WXXI today?
Best regards
Norm Silverstein, WXXI President norms@wxxi.org

REMEMBER WHEN: CANANDAIGUA SUNDAY, OCTOBER 6 AT 7 P.M., SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12 AT 8 P.M. ON WXXI-TV
Remember when Fridays meant a ride on the trolley and a sundae on Main Street? Remember when the click-clack sound of a roller coaster meant a warm summer night at Roseland Park? In honor of Canandaigua celebrating its Centennial this year, we are pleased to present Remember When: Canandaigua, a WXXI production that brings back those great memories from “the chosen spot.”

A STORYCORPS 10TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide Americans of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share, and preserve the stories of our lives. Recordings are archived at the Library of Congress, and specially selected pieces air Friday mornings during Morning Edition on AM 1370 and WRUR-FM. October marks the tenth anniversary of this project, the largest oral history projects of its kind. To celebrate, NPR’s Scott Simon and StoryCorps founder Dave Isay host a retrospective, sharing stories about StoryCorps’ beginnings and its growth into an archive of interviews with nearly 100,000 Americans from every state of the union. They also revisit some of the most beloved conversations, reflect on Studs Terkel’s speech at the launch of the project, get updates from the participants, and go behind-the-scenes of a StoryCorps interview. State of the Re:Union with Al Letson: Portland, OR: A Tale of Two Cities
Among the most iconic landscapes in America is the Western Range. But, this land has become contested ground. Development pressures threaten open space as ranchers and environmentalists alike are wrestling with what this land should be in the years to come.
There’s the Portland that many are familiar with, the city some residents praise as a kind of Eden: full of bike paths, independently owned small businesses, great public transportation and abundant microbreweries and coffee shops. And then there’s the other Portland: the city where whole stretches of busy road are missing sidewalks, the city that’s been getting whiter and less diverse, where some longtime African American residents feel as if decades of institutional racism still have not been fully addressed.

intelligence squared U.S.: Should we break up the big banks?” sunday, OctoBER 27 at 9 p.m.
In 2008, big banks received 245 billion in taxpayer dollars to stabilize U.S. banking institutions. Today, banks that were once “too big to fail” are bigger. Was size a root cause of the financial crisis, or do economies of scale provide benefits to customers and investors?

GUMBO VARIATION THURSDAYS AT 6 P.M. ON WRUR-FM
Every week host Rick Simpson cooks up a musical stew to satisfy your hungry ears. He starts with a roux of jazz and blues, adds some meaty rock and roll, spices it up with some folk, country, and bluegrass, adds some saucy R&B and world music, and serves it up on a big plate of Americana.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25 AT 1 P.M. ON CLASSICAL 91.5 REPEATS SUNDAY, OCTOBER 27 AT 1 P.M. Backstage Pass host Julia Figueras welcomes the Chicago-based Gaudete Brass to Studio A to talk about their new works written for the brass quintet and perform them. The Gaudete Brass is one of the few brass quintets in the world that is exclusively committed to performing serious chamber music. The members of the quintet have succeeded in their musical careers by becoming experts at presenting and programming, preparing new compositions, working with composers, entrepreneurship and business, as well as the fundamentals of chamber music. WATCH ONLINE AT WXXI.ORG/BACKSTAGEPASS
Backstage Pass is a live, monthly performance program that gives listeners the backstage experience of meeting artists up close and personal. The program is made possible in part by a grant from the Gouvernet Arts Fund at Rochester Area Community Foundation.

wxxi&LITTLE
Join WXXI and the Little Theatre for an evening with Anne Serling, author and daughter of 1960s icon Rod Serling. Rod was creator, writer, and host of The Twighlight Zone, the American science-fiction/ fantasy anthology television series that ran from 1959 to 1964.
Entering the Twilight Zone with Anne Serling Tuesday, October 29, 6:30 p.m. at the Little Theatre
Anne recently published a memoir of her father, As I Knew Him: My Dad, Rod Serling, which actress Carol Burnett describes as a “beautifully written book that is proof that the apple didn’t fall too far from the tree when it came to the writing gene.” During this special evening, Anne will share excerpts from her book, as well as several clips from her personal collection of The Twighlight Zone series. Immediately following her presentation, she will host a reception and book signing in the Little Café. This event is free and open to WXXI members but reservations are required. Seats are limited. Call (585) 258-0200 to reserve your spot. Before becoming a full time writer, author/poet Anne Serling was an early childhood teacher with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Elmira College. She serves on the board of directors of the Rod Serling Memorial Foundation and is involved with Binghamton, New York’s School of the Arts “Fifth Dimension” program. Anne wrote predominately poetry until she was published in The Twilight Zone, The Original Stories, an anthology, in which she adapted two of her father’s teleplays, One for the Angels and The Changing of the Guard into short stories. The latter was subsequently published in The Twilight Zone Magazine. Additionally, she has had poetry published in The Cornell Daily Sun and Visions. Recently her works have appeared in Salon.Com and Huffington Post. Anne currently resides in Ithaca, New York.
HORROR FEST 35MM DOUBLE FEATURE
If the image of a hockey mask sends shivers down your spine, and it’s not just the prospect of another rough Sabres season, you’re in luck. On October 25, we’re screening a double feature in 35mm film (the most frightening film medium) of Friday the 13th and Friday the 13th Part 2. The version we’re screening of Part 1 has never been shown in the United States before, and includes scenes even horror aficionados likely haven’t seen. More information for this event will be delivered to your bedroom via raven, at midnight. Or posted to the Little website as we get closer to the date. Either/or.
NEW WEEKEND HOURS FOR THE LITTLE CAFÉ Dinner and a movie? How about lunch and a matinee! The Little Café will be opening at noon on the weekends, starting Saturday, October 5. In the past, our delicious soups, sandwiches, and drinks passed the counter starting at 2 p.m., but the Little staff thought it might be nice for matinee patrons to have a chance at lunch before the show. Early birds, we love you too.
Spotlight on a WXXI Business Partner
Avid vegetable gardeners Susan and Tom Palomaki decided it was a natural career change to purchase Lucas Greenhouses in 2005 after learning the business had closed. Eight years later the Fairport retail garden center grows annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables, and bedding plants locally and in a responsible way. Lucas is a “green” greenhouse, meaning they practice Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Owner Susan Palomaki explains the practice: “Rather than applying pesticides to our entire operation on a regular basis, we intelligently and regularly scout for insects and other damaging pests to our plants. We then use beneficial insects to control threatening pests and insects. This helps protect our environment and the health of our employees and customers. IPM essentially helps us produce healthier plants. We are also the proud recipients of the 2012 Excellence in IPM award from Cornell Cooperative Extension.” At Lucas Greenhouses customers shop for plants grown onsite, as opposed to plants shipped in from wholesale growers. This distinction is notably reflected in the Lucas slogan:
“We grew up listening to NPR on AM-1370 and love that now we are able to help support it.” —Susan Palomaki, Owner
“Grown Right. Here.” Regarding the Lucas Greenhouses partnership with WXXI: “It was an easy decision to support WXXI,” according to Palomaki. “We grew up listening to NPR on AM-1370 and love that now we are able to help support it. WXXI listeners tend to be lovers of nature and gardeners so it seemed to be a perfect fit.”
