Dear Friends, February is the month when I travel to Washington with my public media colleagues to speak to Congress about the importance of continued federal funding for our educational mission.
Norm Silverstein
Although government funding continues to be a shrinking portion of our budget (especially with the continuing sequesters at the federal level), it is still a critical element. It allows us to provide the best non-commercial children’s programming, to support educational efforts at the local level, and to provide the best in news and public affairs. We leverage government support with community support to make a real difference in the lives of so many in the Rochester area. I hope you agree that WXXI makes a difference. You can show your support by going to our website, WXXI.org, and clicking on “Protect My Media.” It will take you to a page that will help you let your member of Congress know how you feel about this issue. It’ll only take a minute or so of your time, and your voice counts! Speaking of “voices,” Evan Dawson is the new host of our new mid-day talk show. Connections with Evan Dawson can be heard weekdays, noon to 2 p.m., on AM 1370, FM 91.5 HD2 and WXXI. org. If you haven’t done so yet, please tune in. If you have a smart phone, you can download our free app that will let you hear WXXI’s many radio services and will also keep you up-to-date on our television schedule! Please join us in celebrating Black History Month by tuning in to WXXI-TV and radio throughout February. We’ll be featuring a variety of programs spotlighting the men and women who shaped the African-American experience. In the TV listings and on the radio pages we have marked these special programs with this v icon. Finally, I trust you’ve been enjoying the new season of Downton Abbey. Judging from the national response – more than 10 million viewers tuned in for the season premiere last month – lots of people are enjoying it. If you caught our wrap-up show, Talking Abbey Live! immediately following the first two episodes, it resumes Sunday, February 9, at 10 p.m. on WXXI-TV. And, don’t forget – Downton Abbey’s season finale airs Sunday, February 23. Thank you again for your support. Your help make all this wonderful programming possible. If you haven’t become a “sustaining member” yet, please consider doing so! Best regards,
Norm Silverstein, WXXI President norms@wxxi.org
NEWS&EVENTS
Learn the
Gettysburg Address
To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address, Ken Burns and PBS have launched a major national public outreach campaign to challenge everyone across the country, especially students, to video record themselves reading or reciting the Gettysburg Address. WXXI invites kids and adults of all ages to learn the 272word Gettysburg Address, and from Jan. - March 2014. You can create your own video reciting or reading the speech and upload it to our web site, WXXI.org/the address. WXXI will also host mini-recording sessions for kids and adults interested in reciting or reading the famous speech in early spring. Stay tuned.
Ken Burns
The campaign will continue throughout the year and is inspired by the subject of Burns’ film THE ADDRESS, which tells the story of the Greenwood School in Putney, Vermont and its students — boys ages 11 to 17, all of whom face a range of learning differences — who each year are encouraged to memorize, practice and recite the Gettysburg Address. The film will air April 15, 2014 on WXXI-TV. Credit: Courtesy of Rahoul Ghose/PBS
Connections with
Evan Dawson
Fans of AM 1370’s mid-day talk show heard a new host last month when Evan Dawson took to the microphone with Connections with Evan Dawson, formerly known as 1370 Connection. Dawson fills the host position left by Bob Smith, who announced he was stepping down from the midday talk show last August. Smith suffered a stroke in the spring, and is currently in long-term rehabilitative care. Connections with Evan Dawson airs weekdays from 12 Noon to 2 p.m. on AM 1370, FM-HD 91.5-2, and WXXI.org. The show covers an array of topics including art, the economy, community affairs, politics, religion, and health. Guests include newsmakers, as well as a regular rotating panel of experts, who offer practical advice on business management, home and auto repair, and other topics. During the program listeners are encouraged to call (585) 263-WXXI (9994) with questions or comments. Wednesday’s show is also televised live on City 12. The first hour of the show re-airs evenings at 11:00 on AM 1370.

TVHIGHLIGHTS
American Masters
Alice Walker Friday, February 7 at 9 p.m. on WXXI-TV
Most famous for her seminal novel The Color Purple, writer/activist Alice Walker celebrates her 70th birthday. Born February 9, 1944, into a family of sharecroppers in rural Georgia, she came of age during the violent racism and seismic social changes of mid-20th-century America. Her mother, poverty and participation in the civil rights movement were the formative influences on her consciousness, becoming the inherent themes in her writing. The first African-American woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for Literature, Walker continues to shine a light on global human rights issues. Her dramatic life is told with poetry and lyricism, and includes interviews with Steven Spielberg, Danny Glover, Quincy Jones, Howard Zinn, Gloria Steinem, Sapphire and Walker herself. photo: Courtesy of Scott Campbell
Great Performances
Sting The Last Ship
Amish Shunned Tuesday, February 4 at 9 p.m. on WXXI-TV
Follow seven former members of an Amish community, filmed over the course of 12 months, as they reflect on their decisions to leave one of the most closed and tightly knit communities in the United States. Estranged from family, the ex-Amish find themselves struggling to understand and make their way in modern America. Interwoven through the stories are the voices of Amish men and women who remain staunchly loyal to their traditions and faith. They explain the importance of obedience, the strong ties that bind their communities together and the pain they endure when a loved one falls away. Friday, February 21 at 9 p.m. on WXXI-TV In this Great Performances presentation, Rock ‘n’ Roll Renaissance man Sting performs highlights from his Broadwaybound show The Last Ship. Exploring a range of universal themes, The Last Ship dramatizes the impact of the demise of the ship-building industry in Sting’s home town of Wallsend, England, which for so long had dominated and shaped the city’s community life. photo: Courtesy of Frank Ockenfels

Monday, Febuary 3 at 10 p.m. on WXXI-TV This documentary spans 13 years as Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson, middle-class African-American parents in Brooklyn, New York, turn their cameras on their son, Idris, and his best friend, Seun, who make their way through Manhattan’s Dalton School, one of the most prestigious private schools in the country. Chronicling the boys’ divergent paths from kindergarten through high school graduation, this provocative, intimate documentary presents complicated truths about America’s struggle to come of age on issues of race, class and opportunity.

Civil Rights in America: Seneca Falls, Selma, Stonewall and Beyond Hosted by Charles Dutton, this one-hour special examines the relevance and meaning of civil rights in the 21st century and the relationship between the Civil Rights Movement and the efforts of women, other people of color, and the LGBT community to expand our traditional definitions of equality. Like “Moments of the Movement” it features first-person narratives culled from hundreds of hours of never-before-broadcast video and audio footage to provide a rich, detailed history of the nation during an important and tumultuous period. Daryl Michael Scott, national president for the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALAH), joins the program with other guests to discuss this year’s Black History Month theme, Civil Rights in America, along with the fiftieth anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the broader implications of civil rights in America. Civil Rights in America airs Sunday, February 2 at 9 p.m. on AM 1370

State of the Re:Union with Al Letson: v Defining Black History SUNday, FEBRUARY 9 at 9 pm During a month selected to celebrate “history,” we certainly are treated to a lot of the same familiar stories: the battles won for Civil Rights, the glory of Martin Luther King Jr.’s words, the hardships endured by slaves. And as important as those narratives are for us to collectively remember, many others get lost in trumpeting the same heroic tales. In this hour, SOTRU zeroes in some of those alternate narratives.

SCIENCE ON SCREEN SERIES PRESENTS
THE FOUNTAIN
Monday, February 10 at 7:00 p.m.
Yesterday, today, tomorrow. Past, present, future. Through time and space, one man embarks on a bold 1000-year odyssey to defeat humankind’s most indomitable foe: Death. Hugh Jackman plays that man, devoted to one woman (Rachel Weisz) and determined to protect her from forces that threaten her existence. His quest leads him to a Tree of Life...and to an adventure into eternity. Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream) directs, continuing his string of imaginative, involving filmmaking with a tale alive with ideas and filled with astonishing vistas. This event kicks off with a presentation by University of Rochester professors Dr. Vera Gorbunova and Dr. Andrei Seluanov on longevity and the Fountain of Youth. The presentation will play off their research on understanding the mechanisms of longevity and studies of exceptionally long-lived animals. Tickets for this event will be $5. Science on Screen is made possible through a grant by the Coolidge Corner Theatre, with support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Post-film discussions are created in partnership with the Rochester Institute of Technology.
THE GREAT CHICKEN WING HUNT Why did the Little patron cross the road? To see this documentary: A spicy film with a lot of local flavor (no, we won’t stop making terrible chicken wing jokes). Directed by Lyons native Matt Reynolds and starring Rochester eating champ Ben “Mighty Thor” Beavers, The Great Chicken Wing Hunt is an award-winning documentary comedy about Buffalo wings and the band of misfits who set out to find the world’s best one. The critics are all clucking, saying Wing Hunt is “The Big Lebowski of documentaries” and “one of the bonafide best films of the year.” It chronicles the rise of western New York’s most famous culinary invention from lowly bar food to one of America’s (and the world’s) most popular dishes. Wing Hunt’s Rochester premiere is at The Little on Saturday, Feburary 1 at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The Great Chicken Wing Hunt Directed by Lyons native Matt Reynolds starring Rochester eating champ Ben “Mighty Thor” Beavers
Beavers will introduce the later screening and take questions from the audience. As if that wasn’t enough, the world’s best wing chef, as chosen by the judges in the film, will be there as well! Want to find out who’s ruling the roost? Better come and see. Tickets for the 3:00 show will cost $6 and the 7:00 show will cost $8 - chicken feed! Okay. We’re done, and we apologize for the jokes.
