DOC MARTIN VI
MARATHON
THURSDAY, MARCH 6, 8PM-11PM, Ep. 1-3 THURSDAY, MARCH 13, 8PM-11PM Ep. 4-6 ON WXXI-TV What happens when a gruff physician flees big-city life to work as a general doctor in a sleepy, picturesque English coastline town? The cultures clash and the sparks fly in the sixth season of DOC MARTIN, a catchy comedy mixing elements of classic British sitcoms with sharp medical drama and a quirky, lovable cast of characters. To kick off the new season, WXXI-TV will air the first three episodes back-to-back on March 6, followed by the next three episodes back-to-back on March 13th. As the new season gets under way, the town is buzzing with arrangements for the wedding of Martin and Louisa. Will they finally tie the knot, or will the villagers have to put the confetti back in the box again? The season concludes with the final two episodes airing on consecutive Thursdays, March 20 and 27 at 9pm.

Dear Friends, I’m going to let you in on a “Little Secret.” The partnership between WXXI and the Little Theatre just celebrated its second anniversary and so far, our relationship is going strong!
Norm Silverstein
We’ve raised and invested more than $500,000 in upgrades and improvements at the Little and you can see the difference. Theaters 2-5 have new digital projectors, screens and sound systems. Since movies are now being released in digital format instead of traditional film, the Little needed to change to remain in business. We also replaced the seats in Theater 2, with plans on the drawing board for the rest of the theaters (funding permitting). This year you’ll start to see improvements in the landmark Theater 1 on East Avenue. We received matching grants from the state through the Finger Lakes Economic Development Council that will allow the work to begin (although we still have a lot of fundraising ahead of us to finish the job). Eventually, you’ll see a restored Theater 1 that will be an architectural structure we can all be proud of! The Little celebrates its 85th anniversary this year as Rochester’s place for independent American cinema and foreign films. It is the longest continuously operating art film house in the nation. You can read an interesting history of the Little, and “the little cinema movement” of the 1920s on the Little’s website, thelittle.org. You can also check out what’s playing and buy tickets online – another improvement since our partnership! Throughout this process, WXXI is keeping in mind the need to preserve “the Little experience.” That’s why we have so many panel discussions and events at the Little – it’s part of the “shared experience” of enjoying a film with friends and hearing others react. Our partnership with local film festivals is key, so we will maintain the ability to show historic and archival films that haven’t been “digitized.” Music in the café, the way we showcase works of local artists, a venue for the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, and other special events are all important to the future of the Little Theatre. Also, I want you to know that WXXI and the Little remain separate not-for-profit organizations. You can be assured that donations to WXXI stay with the station, donations to the Little (including membership) stay with the theater. If you haven’t done so lately, drop by for a movie and perhaps some music in the café. We’d love to see you – and hear your ideas about ways that WXXI and the Little can build on “the beginning of a beautiful friendship.” Best regards,
Norm Silverstein, WXXI President norms@wxxi.org

Nomination categories include: Historical/Cultural: Program/Special; Craft Specialty: Research; and Best Director: Post-Production. HOST YOUR OWN SCREENING OF AMERICAN PROMISE, A FILM THAT EXAMineS THE LINK BETWEEN RACE AND K12 EDUCATION American Promise is an intimate and provocative account, recorded over 13 years, of the experiences of two middle-class African-American boys who enter a prestigious private schools and whose families confront the opportunities and frustrations. As part of WXXI’s American Graduate initiative, American Promise aired on WXXI-TV and screened at the Little Theatre last month. The screening was followed by an insightful panel discussion, which you can watch online at http://wxxi.org/grad. We want to keep the conversation going. You can help do that and here are some ways to do so: Host a viewing party—large or small—to watch and discuss American Promise. Host a teachers’ or faculty event. Watch the film and then use the professional development curricula. Host a black male achievement panel with leaders in your community. Host a class event with high school students to discuss these issues. Use issues raised as writing prompts. Host a community forum at your public library to discuss the issues. Host a PTA, community center, after school or education or youth event for citizens and teens that care about making a difference. To request a DVD and discussion guide visit: WXXI.org/grad This program is made possible by a grant from American Documentary | POV, with funding provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
Q&A with a WXXI underwriter
Douglas Fields
Matthews & Fields Lumber Company has been underwriting WXXI programming continuously for more than thirty years, and has the distinction of being in business for more than a century. Douglas Fields proudly describes Matthews & Fields as a fourth generation, family-owned, full-service building material supplier: “Our products include windows, doors, stairs, moulding, decking, and lumber. Many components are manufactured locally, including trusses, stairs, and specialty millwork products. We are unique in being in business since 1896. Our great grandfather Alonzo Matthews sailed a freight schooner on Lake Ontario, bringing railroad ties and hop poles to a developing Upstate New York. He had five daughters. The company was passed along to his daughter Lena Matthews and Leslie Fields, the husband of another daughter Pamela Matthews. It was very unusual in 1930 to have women owning and operating a lumber yard!”
What is the most unusual or unique customer request Matthews & Fields has received? Once a gentleman, who was rebuilding his front porch, tried to return Douglas Fir T&G porch flooring cut-offs for credit. The trunk of his car was filled with small 4- to 6-inch wood fragments! Is there a local business that you admire for their practices and/or reputation? Wegmans. It seems all of their employees are truly happy working there. That’s what we strive to be: one big happy successful family.
What has been the most important business practice for a company with the longevity of Matthews & Fields? A good night’s sleep! What would you like the WXXI audience to know about Matthews & Fields? I think there is a misconception that Matthews & Fields is 100% “wholesale.” While it is true we are 85 to 90 percent pro-oriented, we encourage everyone to shop at Matthews & Fields. We are more than just a lumber company. What distinguishes Matthews & Fields from other businesses in the Greater Rochester area? We have a great team of salespeople whose product knowledge is tops. Even with that, I would say the service that we provide helps our customers with their projects from concept to completion. THE STEEP CANYON RANGERS WITH EDIE BRICKELL
FRIDAY, MARCH 7 AT 9 PM ON WXXI-TV Steve Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers with Edie Brickell will be performing at the 2014 Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival in June. Preview the concert before seeing them in person by tuning in for this Great Performances presentation. Comedy legend Steve Martin is now in the fifth decade of a varied and accomplished career as a comic, actor, author, and playwright. He is also a Grammy-winning, boundary-pushing bluegrass banjoist and songwriter. Great Performances turns the spotlight on Steve’s musical side with a concert performance of his new collaboration with Edie Brickell, who initially burst onto the national scene in the late 80s fronting the New Bohemians. Although these new musical partners have already built respected individual bodies of work, their inaugural effort is a charming departure, as well as a creative milestone. Backed by the virtuoso playing of the Steep Canyon Rangers, the duo partner on a series of new songs that combine Martin’s inventive five-string banjo playing with Edie’s heart-tugging vocals to create a playful and accessible collection of songs.

ARTHUR “WHEN CARL MET GEORGE” WED., MARCH 19 AT 7AM ON WXXI-TV George is excited about spending time with his new friend, Carl, who seems to know all kinds of cool facts about trains and about... well lots of things! Then George learns that Carl has Asperger’s Syndrome - a form of autism that makes Carl see the world differently than most people. Can George and Carl remain good friends - and perhaps even learn from each other? This program is part of Move to Include, formerly known as Dialogue on Disability, a partnership between WXXI, Al Sigl Community of Agencies, and the Golisano Foundation, which celebrates the abilities of people with disabilities.

THE TEACHINGS OF JON SUN., MARCH 23 AT 8PM on WXXI-TV
Tune in for this insightful and humorous documentary by Jennifer Owensby about her brother Jon, a 40-year-old man severely and profoundly affected by Down Syndrome. Although Jon may never accomplish much by conventional standards — he has an IQ of 20, cannot talk and earns less than $13.00 a year — his greater purpose is to teach others how to love. The program celebrates Jon exactly as he is, rather than focusing on changing Jon to fit into the world. This program is part of Move to Include, formerly known as Dialogue on Disability, a partnership between WXXI, Al Sigl Community of Agencies, and the Golisano Foundation, which celebrates the abilities of people with disabilities.

WOMEN’S RIGHTS AFTER THE ARAB SPRING Have women in Arab countries achieved greater equality since the revolutions swept the region, and which rights are yet to be won? The revolutions of the Arab Spring promised greater freedoms for the people of the Middle East. But while some freedoms have been gained, stability has been lost. In many cases, it’s become more dangerous, especially for women. On this episode of America Abroad we will visit Egypt where under the newly adopted constitution, women are supposed to have equality in “all civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights.” We’ll hear from Turkey as women are feeling the effects of newly empowered religious conservative parties, as well as from women in Kuwait about their day to day lives. Women’s Rights After The Arab Spring airs Sunday, March 2 at 9 p.m. on AM 1370

Intelligence Squared US: “Is the affordable care act beyond rescue?” SUNday, march 9 at 9 pm
With the disastrous launch of the HealthCare.gov website, critics of the Affordable Care Act, or “Obamacare,” were given more fuel for the fire. Is this political hot potato’s inevitability once again at stake? And is the medical community really on board with the law, or resisting (rewriting?) it from the sidelines?
Humankind: The Search For Well Being Part 1 SUNday, march 16 at 9 pm
What’s it like for patients seeking treatment in a medical setting that most people feel is too rushed? What are the challenges for doctors and nurses who work in this system? And what is the role of patients in optimizing their own health?
Humankind: The Search For Well Being Part 2 sunday, march 23 at 9 pm
Part 2 looks at fascinating developments in health care education to prepare a new wave of professionals for integrative practice.
Intelligence Squared US: “Was Snowden Justified?” sunday, march 30 at 9 pm
Has Edward Snowden done the U.S. a great service? There is no doubt that his release of highly classified stolen documents has sparked an important public debate, even forcing what could be a major presidential overhaul of the NSA’s surveillance programs. But have his actions tipped off our enemies and endangered national security? Is Snowden a whistleblower, or is he a criminal?

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19 AT 7PM AT KODAK HALL AT EASTMAN THEATRE
WXXI and Eastman School of Music (ESM) are pleased to bring NPR’s From the Top with Christopher Riley to tape a radio broadcast in Kodak Hall at the Eastman Theatre on March 19. The program, which features the amazing performances by young musicians, age 8-18, is heard every Sunday at 5 p.m. on Classical 91.5. The show will feature a special guest appearance by legendary flutist Sir James Galway and his wife, Lady Jeanne Galway. Sir James will play with an ensemble of young musicians from the Eastman School of Music and Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (RPYO). They are: oboe – June Kim (ESM) and Gwen Healy (RPYO); clarinet – Dominic Giardino (ESM and From the Top alum) and Jeffrey Guo (RPYO); bassoon – Quinn Delaney (ESM and From the Top alum) and Maggie Bacon (RPYO); and horn – Russell Rybicki and Nikolette LaBonte, both ESM students. Two local young musicians will be featured as soloists in this show. ESM student 19-year-old soprano Emily Helenbrook from Alexander, New York, will return to From the Top after appearing on a 2012 episode from Chautauqua Institution. 16-year-old Annie Jacobs-Perkins from Pittsford, principal cellist with the RPYO, will perform At the Fountain, Op. 20, No. 2, by Carl Davidoff. Also on the show will be 10-year-old violinist Pierce Wang from Fremont, California, and 16-year-old pianist Carmen Knoll from Carlstadt, New Jersey, who is a recipient of From the Top’s Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award.
For tickets and information, visit wxxi.org/fromthetop. From the Top may be heard on Classical 91.5 Sundays at 5pm.

A WOMAN’S WORLD: WOMEN COMPOSERS OF THE BAROQUE SUNDAY, MARCH 9 AT 1PM ON CLASSICAL 91.5
Pegasus Early Music presents a concert of women composers from the baroque era recorded live from the Downtown United Presbyterian Church in Rochester last November. You’ll hear music from various women composers including: Barbara Strozzi, Elizabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, Francesca Cassini and Isabella Leonarada. Artists include: soprano Laura Heimes; violinist Dongmyung Ahn and Daniel Lee; Emily Walhout on gamba; Michael Beattie on harpsichord, and Deborah Fox on theorbo. Mona Seghatoleslami hosts.
In celebration of From the Top’s show at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre on March 19, host Julia Figueras welcomes pianist and From the Top host Christopher O’Riley and flutist Sir James Galway to WXXI’s studio for a special Backstage Pass. The two will perform and chat with Julia about reaching out to audiences, bringing classical to the non-classical listener, and breaking down the walls of musical classification. Plus she’ll ask what they were like as kids, too—their inspirations and expectations. Backstage Pass is made possible in part by a grant from the Gouvernet Arts Fund at Rochester Area Community Foundation.

NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE:
WAR HORSE Tickets to the National Theatre in London run about $40. A plane ticket to London is $1,744. Since we’re the Little and we love you, we have a way for you to see the best theatre productions of London’s West End for $20 or less, not counting popcorn.
On Sunday, March 16 at 12:00 p.m. and Tuesday, March 18 at 6:30 p.m., the Little Theatre and National Theatre Live will present the international smash hit War Horse. Four million people around the world have already been transported from the fields of rural Devon to the trenches of First World War France by this brilliant stage adaptation. Filled with stirring music and songs, this powerfully moving and imaginative drama is a show of phenomenal inventiveness. Life-sized puppets made by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to life on stage in front of you. This amazing performance is typical of what NT Live gives to Little patrons. It’s a groundbreaking project that brings the best of British theatre recorded as live from the London stage to cinemas like the Little, allowing everyone to enjoy world-class theatre in the comfort of their home cities.
FIVE THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT THE LITTLE So, we’ve been around for almost 85 years, yet some questions seem to have been left unanswered in our communication with you, our favorite people in the world. As always, please feel free to email me, Pete, the Little’s PR Coordinator, at pwayner@wxxi.org with any other questions you have. For now, here are five answers to questions you probably have:
have three parking lots. The small one outside 1 We

art in the café is by real people, and changes 3 The every month. Really cool, amazing artists show their stuff on our walls every month, so take a closer look next time you’re in. Pretty soon, we’re going to start doing artist profiles, so keep an eye on thelittle.org!
