Mordecai Lipshutz and Norm Silverstein

Dear Friend, We lost a good friend of WXXI and Classical music last month. On Sunday, March 9, retired Classical 91.5 host Mordecai Lipshutz passed away at the age of 64 following a long illness. His soothing voice, incredible knowledge of Classical music, and his music selections made him everyone’s favorite afternoon drive home companion.

Mordecai joined Classical 91.5 in 1976 as a part-time announcer and became a full-time host in 1979. During his distinguished tenure, he produced and hosted Live from Hochstein, including the annual Cup of Good Cheer concert, where he put on a Santa hat, and called himself “Morde-Claus” while reading “The Night before the Sixth Day of Chanukah.”

He was the voice of Classical 91.5 on Christmas Eve, keeping listeners company into the wee hours of the morning as they wrapped presents and prepared for Christmas morning. On New Year’s Eve he presented his annual broadcast, “A Night of Smiles,” where he was nicknamed the “Waltz King” because of the many Strauss waltzes he played that evening.

Outside the station, Mordecai guest conducted many RPYO marathons, performed solos on the vacuum cleaner (that’s right, a vacuum), and narrated a number of works with the RPO, the Rochester Chamber Music Society and the Eastman School.

He retired from Classical 91.5 in 2008, but remained active in the music scene, attending RPO concerts and participating in the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Fest’s late night jam sessions.

During a celebration of Mordecai’s 25th anniversary at WXXI, he said “I am very proud to have served the community through Classical 91.5 for so many years. This station is more important to our community now than it ever was. Our classical music is heard by more people of all ages, particularly young people, and it has had a considerable effect on the level of culture in Rochester.” We couldn’t agree more.

Our community’s deep appreciation for the arts is why WXXI has one of the most listened-to Classical public radio stations in the country.

As Classical 91.5 celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, we look forward to bringing you more fine Classical music, like Mordecai always selected, for years to come.

Q&A with a WXXI underwriter In 1978 the four Lechner brothers began mowing lawns in their Rochester neighborhood to earn extra income. Ken Burns’ THE ADDRESS, which premieres Tuesday, April 15 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV, tells the story of a tiny school in Putney, Vermont, the Greenwood School, where each year the students are encouraged to memorize, practice and recite the Gettysburg Address. In its exploration of Greenwood, whose students, boys ages 11-17, all face a range of complex learning differences; the film also unlocks the history, context and importance of President Lincoln’s most powerful address.

THE ADDRESS

In celebration of the film and to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address, WXXI has joined Ken Burns’ and PBS’ national public outreach campaign to challenge everyone across the country, especially students to submit their recordings. We encourage kids and adults of all ages to learn the 272-word Gettysburg Address, and video record themselves reading or reciting it. You can submit your video online at WXXI.org/theaddress.

On Monday, April 14 at 7 p.m.

WXXI will host a preview screening of THE ADDRESS and share several local Gettysburg Address videos already submitted by those in our community at the Little Theatre, theatre 1 (240 East Avenue, Rochester). This event is free and open to the public. Seats are first come, first served.

More than 100 hundred years ago, Captain Scott and his companions set out on a journey to the South Pole. It was an epic expedition to the end of the Earth which would push them beyond the limits of human endurance and one from which they would never return. Word of Captain Scott is the moving account of a tragic event that continues to fascinate the public to this day.

As the world commemorates the 100th anniversary of the race for Antarctic glory, this program retells their story with the help of new information and in the light of modern medical knowledge.

is an unprecedented exploration of autism from the point of view of autistic people themselves. Four-year-old Violet, teenaged Nicholas and adult Paula occupy different 7:30pm 8:00pm 8:30pm 9:00pm 9:30pm 10:00pm 10:30pm positions on the autism spectrum, but they are all at pivotal moments in their lives. How they and the people around them work out their perceptual and behavioral differences becomes a remarkable reflection of the “neurotypical” world — the world of the non-autistic — revealing inventive adaptations on each side and an emerging critique of both what it means to be normal and what it means to be human.This program is part of Move to Include, formerly known as Dialogue on Disability, a partnership between WXXI, Al Sigl Community of Agencies , and the Golisano Foundation, which celebrates the abilities of people with disabilities.

Have you heard of the Little Free Library program? It’s a “take a book, return a book” gathering place where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories. In its most basic form, a Little Free Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book (or two) and bring back another book to share.

In an effort to promote literacy and the love of reading, WXXI is proud to have its own Little Free Library, located in the lobby of our studios at 280 State Street in downtown Rochester. Special thanks to WXXI volunteer Mark Becker, who designed and built our own Little Library, and WXXI Volunteer Leadership Council Chairman Richard Vuillequez, who provided funds to purchase the materials for the structure. The Rochester episode of NPR’s From the Top with Christopher O’Riley and world-renowned flutist, Sir James Galway, which taped last month at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, airs on Classical 91.5 on Sunday, April 6 at 5 p.m. The program features 19-year-old Eastman School of Music student soprano Emily Helenbrook from Alexander, New York, as well as 16-year-old Annie Jacobs-Perkins from Pittsford, principal cellist with the RPYO and Hochstein School student. In addition 10-year-old violinist Pierce Wang from Fremont, California; and 16-year-old pianist Carmen Knoll from Carlstadt, New Jersey, who is a recipient of From the Top’s Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award, perform.

THE FUTURE OF CLASSICAL MUSIC ON AMERICA’S RIVIERA hosted by Carol Burnett WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9 AT 8PM ON CLASSICAL 91.5

The Music Academy of the West, whose annual Summer School and Festival has become one of the country’s most prestigious showcases for exceptional young classical musicians, is the focus of this two-hour radio special hosted by iconic television star Carol Burnett. Featuring performances and interviews from the Academy’s 2013 Festival, the program’s musical selections include the Queen of the Night aria from the Music Academy’s production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, an excerpt from the West Coast premiere of composer Matthias Pintscher’s new work bereshit, and a rollicking performance of the finale of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, conducted by the incomparable Leonard Slatkin.

Live from Hochstein returns for the spring! The series kicked off on March 26 with the Hochstein Merit Scholarship Winners in Recital, featuring flutist Yifan Kong, cellist Annie Jacobs-Perkins, and guitarist Oksana Miller. That program can be heard online at WXXI.org/Hochstein.

Broadcast live from the Hochstein Performance Hall (50 North Plymouth Ave. in Rochester), the series presents performances by some of the finest artists from the Rochester area’s musical community. Each of these free “brown bag” concerts runs from 12:10-12:50 p.m., giving downtown business people, teachers, families, students and friends an opportunity to enjoy classical music during their lunch hour.

This time of year, people yearn for renewal. The smell of thawed soil, the taste of fresh local produce, the thrill of planning a summer trip – we just need something new. Well, a new documentary made by WXXI’s own Hélène Biandudi Hofer about Rochester’s connection to the world’s newest nation screens on April 22.

SCHOOLS FOR SOUTH SUDAN

Schools for South Sudan focuses on the unique ties between Rochester and this young African nation. A handful of area nonprofits, all founded by former Lost Boys of Sudan, are on the ground in the nation building schools, health clinics and providing clean water in remote villages. Their goal is to bring stability and new opportunities to the people of South Sudan and their work is being supported by funds raised in the Greater Rochester area.

Join us in Theater 1 on Tuesday, April 22 at 6:30pm

for this screening, and stay after the film for a panel discussion, hosted by Hélène Biandudi Hofer herself. This will be a very special panel, composed of Lost Boys turned Rochester citizens and activists. They are doing wonderful things to help shape the future of this young country.

The screening is free and open to the pubic.

INDIAN FOOD and the BEST MOVIE NEVER MADE

Whenever we see a film about food, we want to eat the movie. But if there is one thing we’re sure about, it’s that you can’t eat movies. You can, however, eat Indian food. That’s why in April, we’re hosting a Food and Flicks centered around The Lunchbox, a fantastic foreign film. In addition to a wonderful storyline, there are a lot of beautiful food shots in there that will go perfect with an Indian buffet in our café. On a completely different topic, you may have heard of the sci-fi classic Dune. Did you know that cult filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky was making his own adaptation in 1975, which would have featured Salvador Dali, Orson Welles, and Mick Jagger? It actually would have been a cinematic game-changer – so why was it never made? Find out when Jodorowsky’s Dune, the documentary taking us inside the cult titan that never was, airs in April!

Meet WXXI Annual Auction’s 2014 Featured Artists!

Laura WildeR A Featured Artist on the Auction since 2002, Laura Wilder’s work evokes an early 20th century aesthetic which brings a familiar yet fresh perspective to her subject matter.

In describing her artistic style Laura says that “although my work might seem like a nostalgic look backward, it’s really a wish for the present and the future.”

Cordell Cordaro A Rochester native, Cordell Cordaro grew up in the Monroe-Park Ave neighborhoods and as a son of artists, had exposure to creative expression early on in life. While his works can be seen in public and private spaces from New York City to Singapore, Cordell remains committed to his hometown saying Rochester is “a very welcoming community for artists.”

Peter Pincus A Rochester native, Peter began his study of ceramics through classes at the Genesee Pottery while in high school.

Committed to help educating the next generation of creative individuals, Peter now has come full circle and is currently the studio manager at the Genesee Pottery, where his studies began. While his ceramic works are functional they also “become canvases that visually illustrate the defining spirit of the times, despite their being utilitarian and made of clay, not canvas.”

Sarah C. Rutherford Originally a Boston native, Sarah C. Rutherford has found herself in love with Rochester, NY. As one of the featured artists in Wall Therapy’s 2013 exhibitions and co-founder of The Yards-a collaborative art space in the heart of the historic Rochester Public Market, Sarah embodies a movement of creative individuals committed to using art as a launching pad for community revitalization.

Dick Kane A longtime donor to the WXXI Auction, Dick Kane has taught painting at the Memorial Art Gallery’s Creative Workshops since 2000. His paintings and teaching style are well known for their energy and excitement. One of his commissions is at Barnes & Noble–Pittsford. He also serves as art advisor to the Town of Brighton.
