Dear Friends, Summer is finally here, bringing with it the 13th Annual Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival. Once again, WXXI and the Little Theatre are proud to be part of this year’s Festival which draws thousands of people downtown for a week of great music from local, Norm Silverstein national and international stars. The Little’s Theater One is an official Club Pass venue again this year and will host 18 concerts. We’ll also have free music in the Little Café plus a special jazz menu. Read more about what’s happening at The Little during Jazz Fest on the pages that follow in this magazine or at thelittle.org. WXXI’s booth will be stationed at the hub of the Festival, at the corner of Main Street and Jazz Street, where you can pick up information on what’s planned nightly at The Little and throughout the Jazz Fest. Our TV crews will also be on site recording the newest season of our national Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival series at Kilbourn Hall, as well as shooting the sights and sounds on Jazz Street. Our news team will be reporting live from the Festival and you can hear those reports on AM 1370 and WRUR 88.5 FM. Finally, if you get home from the Festival and want more jazz — tune to WXXI-TV at midnight for rebroadcasts of classic episodes of our Jazz Fest series. The programs are marked in the TV grid of this magazine. And if that’s not enough music, this month we’re also gearing up for a new season of Hochstein at High Falls. Join Classical 91.5’s Mona Seghatoleslami for the noontime concert series at Granite Park at the base of the Pont de Rennes Bridge, Thursdays through August. On the TV side, WXXI will be shooting 10 new episodes of Second Opinion. Our national health care series, now entering its 12th season, just received a Silver Communicator Award and a Bronze Telly Award (for excellence) for its “Teen Depression” episode in the Film/Video Health and Wellness category. Congratulations go out to Second Opinion’s production team. For information on any of the issues addressed on Second Opinion, visit secondopinion-tv.org. It’s a great resource, encompassing every episode of this award-winning series. Our news department continues to grow and have impact beyond the Greater Rochester area. We received two grants that will enhance our efforts. One is an upstate news hub project, funded in part by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). It is intended to enhance the quality of news content and strengthen regional coverage on TV, radio and online. We are also embarking on an innovative citizen journalism project called “YelleR” with partners WDKX radio, Hacks/Hackers Rochester, RIT’s Journalism faculty, and the Department of Adolescence Education at Nazareth College. The YelleR project will allow the creation of a “Citizen Journalism” mobile app, as well as community outreach initiatives, to broaden news consumption and participation among traditionally underserved populations, such as minorities and citizens under 30. We’re proud to be the lead station in these initiatives! We could not respond to the needs and interests of our community without the generous support of our members. As June comes to a close and we prepare to end our fiscal year, I hope you’ll consider making a contribution by June 30. Your support will allow us to end the year stronger –and will help us springboard into the next fiscal year!

NEWS&EVENTS
Q&A with a WXXI underwriter In June 2012 a new restaurant and cocktail bar featuring French wine and country French cuisine opened at The Rochester Public Market. Cure Co-owner, Chuck Cerankosky, provides some insights about the Rochester restaurant scene. Q. Why do you feel Cure is a valuable asset to the Greater Rochester community? I feel that Cure joins an increasingly vibrant cloth of Rochester restaurants by offering a unique take on Gaelic comfort food. My partner, Dan Martello, and I feel like we identified a void in Rochester›s restaurant scene, and filled it with an establishment that is on-par with analogous restaurants in New York and Chicago. Q. What is the most challenging aspect associated with owning/managing a restaurant? Finding the balance between expressing creative energies via cuisine, drink and atmosphere, and committing time to management and operational obligations is most challenging. A well-oiled restaurant requires an enormous amount of behind-thescenes setup and maintenance, with the operator wearing a whole manner of hats, from electrician to accountant. The trick is to commit the proper energies to the tasks while reserving enough for what is most important: making your guests happy! Q. What distinguishes Cure from other restaurants in the Greater Rochester area? A unique, French– and charcuterie-based menu, an all-French wine list, and an ambitious cocktail menu featuring eclectic spirits and bespoke cocktails (like the recipe below)!
The Rearden Metal 1 1/4 oz. Armagnac St. Vivant 3/4 oz. Los Nahuales Mezcal 3/4 oz. Dios Baco Manzanilla Sherry 1/2 oz. Creme de Cacao 3 dashes Fee Brothers Black Walnut Bitters Stir all ingredients with ice; strain into a chilled cocktail glass; garnish with a round slice of orange peel. He has also served as talent during WXXI’s radio drives and has been a regular guest on WXXI’s mid-day talk show 1370 Connection, which is now Connections with Evan Dawson.
In addition to the award presented to Tom, Deanne Molinari received the President’s Award, which honors someone who has not only given of their time and talent, but has had a significant impact on the organization. Dee has been a WXXI member since 1994. She is former Chair of the Volunteer Leadership Council and served a term on the WXXI Board of Trustees. She has volunteered in several capacities including serving as talent during membership drives, a docent, a greeter at special events, and a helper with WXXI’s Auction. TO STAND ON TUESDAY, JUNE 3 AT 8PM ON WXXI-TV
Rochester takes center stage in a much anticipated documentary about a city that has always been at the forefront of social change and justice. Shoulders to Stand On, produced by local filmmaker Kevin Indovino, begins by exploring a notso-distant past: before Stonewall and before the birth of the Gay Movement. We discover a city at the height of prosperity, a city steeped in history, and yet overshadowed by secrets. Shoulders to Stand On celebrates the brave men and women who had the courage to step out of the closet, allowing their voices to be heard, in the tradition of a city whose history is firmly grounded in freedom and equality for all.

POV “When I Walk” MONDAY, JUNE 23 AT 10 PM ON WXXI
Jason DaSilva was 25 years old and a rising independent filmmaker when a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis changed everything — and inspired him to make another film. When I Walk is a candid and brave chronicle of one young man’s struggle to adapt to the harsh realities of M.S. while holding on to his personal and creative life. With his body growing weaker, DaSilva’s spirits, and his film, get a boost from his mother’s tough love and the support of Alice Cook, who becomes his wife and filmmaking partner. The result is a life-affirming documentary filled with unexpected moments of joy and humor.

state of the reunion with al letson:
This American Life
The U.S. has been a country shaped by migration, dating back to the days of the pioneers making their way West. But recently, this country has been seeing a different kind of migration, one motivated not by economic necessity, but lifestyle choices. More and more, people are moving to places where they’re surrounded by others like themselves. In this episode of SOTRU, we tell stories of this new kind of migration, of people moving to different corners of the country to find (or build) themselves a haven.

AM 1370 Specials state of the reunion with al letson Sundays at 9pm Hawai’i: The Legacy of Sugar? airs june 1 at 9pm
Behind Hawai’i’s tourist façade is one of the most unique multicultural states in the nation, one still dealing with the complicated legacy of the circumstances. Much of how Hawai’i is now comes back to one game-changing element: sugar. Long before it was a tourist’s paradise, what Hawai’i did was grow sugar. It was not only an economic driver, it was a force that remade the place. SOTRU explores the way contemporary Hawai’i is still navigating the legacy of the sugar plantations. Fairbanks, AK: Frontier Community airs june 8 at 9pm
Fairbanks sits deep in the Alaska Interior, meaning winters are long and dark, and temperatures often plunge to -50F. Because of its isolation and climate, it has long attracted people drawn to the challenges and opportunities of a wild, remote place. SOTRU meets a number of Fairbanksians — artists, athletes, journalists, and organizers — who embody the spirit of the Golden Heart City through their grit, determination, and iconoclasm.
In partnership with the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, host Al Letson and guest producer John Biewen present a collection of sports stories from Durham and Chapel Hill, North Carolina. In this hour of SOTRU, we explore ways in which sport helps to heal social divisions within a community – or reproduces, or even exacerbates, those divisions.
Salt Lake City, UT: Updating Tradition v airs june 15 at 9 pm
Founded by Mormon pioneers, Salt Lake City remains deeply influenced by its religious roots. But it also defies easy categorization. With a large and politically active gay community, one of biggest Polynesian populations in the country, and a steady stream of new migrants, the city is full of vibrant contradiction -- and sometimes conflict. From Mormons working to heal the rift between the historically anti-gay church and the LGBT community, to young Shoshone computer programmers who’ve created the first-ever video game in their native language, we’ll explore how some of the city’s most entrenched institutions are being stretched and adapted to fit the modern moment.

Sure June is the month for the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, but WRUR celebratres Jazz every Sunday with Jazz from the Cellar at 8 p.m and Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz at 9 p.m! Jazz from the Cellar, hosted by Tom Hampson, is a weekly jazz program which is 90% music, complemented by commentary and humor. With a wealth of recordings to draw from, the program gives listeners the opportunity to hear selections rarely played on commercial radio stations. Hampson draws from his vast collection of CDs to broadcast a fabulous live program of music, stories and anecdotes. Piano Jazz, hosted by the great late Marian McPartland, is a program curated solely from 700 programs archived in the 30-year run of this national cultural treasure. Piano Jazz is a forum for jazz legends and influential performers as well as up-and-coming talents. Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock, Dave Brubeck, Diana Krall, Max Roach, Cassandra Wilson and Tony Bennett are among the over 400 guests who have joined McPartland to create dynamic duets and discuss their lives and music.

NT LIVE: THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME Following its smash-hit live broadcast, the National Theatre production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time comes to The Little on June 15 and 17 via NT Live. Based on the acclaimed novel by Mark Haddon, adapted by Simon Stephens and directed by Marianne Elliott, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time has been hailed by The Times of London as “A phenomenal combination of storytelling and spectacle.” It is the winner of seven Olivier Awards in 2013, including Best New Play. Christopher, 15 years old, has an extraordinary brain – exceptional at math while ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. When he falls under suspicion of killing Mrs. Shears’ dog, Wellington, he records each fact about the event in the book he is writing to solve the mystery of the murder. But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a frightening journey that upturns his world. For those not familiar with NT Live, it’s really something to see. Actual theatre performances with the best actors and directors in London are recorded as live with cameras carefully positioned throughout the auditorium, ensuring that Little audiences get the best seat in the house for each production. Where these cameras are placed varies for each show, to make sure audiences enjoy the best possible experience every time.
Tickets for the show are $15 for Little members, students and seniors $20 for general public.
AS TIME GOES BY
IN SHANGHAI
The oldest band in the world has been playing every evening at the Peace Hotel in Shanghai for more than 30 years. Most members of the band, all jazz musicians of the first rank, are more than 80 years old. As Time Goes By in Shanghai tells the story of their existence, from the Japanese occupation to China’s Cultural Revolution, right up to today’s turbo-drive economy. The Little’s One Take: Stories Through the Lens film series is proud to present the film on Tuesday, June 10 at 7:00 p.m., with a Skype Q&A session with director Uli Gaulke to follow! Tickets are only $8. With humor, wisdom and a tale or two being spun along the way, the men in black suits lead us on a tour of their everyday lives in one of the world’s most modern cities and show us how good old jazz has given them the strength to weather the storms of time.
WELCOME TO
SANGRIAVILLE!
The Little was born in the jazz age, so when the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival rolls around, June 20-28, we like to whoop it up! Thanks to Freed Maxick, Theater 1 is an official venue for the festival this year (performance details can be found at rochesterjazz. com) and of course we will be hosting free performances in our café, along with hot food and cold drinks. The centerpiece of our festival offerings this year, however, will be a little back alley grotto called Sangriaville, sponsored by Salena’s Mexican Restaurant. It’s going to be mysterious. It’s going to be outside and open air, in our brick courtyard. It’s going to have music. It’s going to have intrigue. It’s going to have … sangria. For big, cold, delicious fruity drinks, and a secluded, subdued, musical experience, come to our courtyard.

“America — they’re coming for you next.” That’s the warning from a Wisconsin state employee after her union rights were destroyed by a Republican governor funded by corporate and billionaire donors whose ultimate goal is to break the unions nationwide — and cripple the labor-backed Democratic party.
Join WXXI at the Little Theatre Thursday, June 12 at 6:30pm for this searing exposé on the state of democracy in America and the fracturing of the Republican Party, Academy Award®-nominated directors Carl Deal and Tia Lessin follow the money behind the rise of the Tea Party. CITIZEN KOCH investigates the impact of unlimited, anonymous spending by corporations and billionaires on the electoral process, featuring stories of life-long Republicans whose loyalty is tested when their families become collateral damage in the GOP fight to take organized labor out at the knees. Alternately terrifying and funny, CITIZEN KOCH is an essential and powerful portrait of our political times.
