MARCH 2013

Mount Hope Cemetery is America’s first municipal Victorian cemetery and the subject of WXXI’s upcoming documentary, A Walk Through History in Mount Hope Cemetery.

The production spotlights the magnificent 196-acre piece of land, with its lofty hills and picturesque valleys, and features the mausoleums, Egyptian obelisks, Florentine castiron fountain, and the infinitely varied tombstones marking 350,000 graves. On Tuesday, March 5 at 8 p.m. WXXI-TV/HD presents a sneak peek of what our production team has been working on. Enjoy this special presentation as our producers have pulled together some of the most intriguing video segments and will share behind-the-scene details about the production. An encore of this presentation will air on Thursday, March 14 at 9:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD.

The Invisible War From Oscar®- and Emmy®-nominated filmmaker Kirby Dick comes The Invisible War, a groundbreaking investigation about one of America’s most shameful and best kept secrets: the epidemic of rape within the U.S. military. The film paints a startling picture of the extent of the problem— today, a female soldier in combat zones is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire. The Department of Defense estimates there were a staggering 19,300 service members sexually assaulted in 2010 alone.

Dear Friends,

Norm Silverstein

I’d like to thank everyone who made a pledge during our February radio membership campaign. Whether it is the trusted news that WXXI provides, the soaring sounds from Rochester’s only classical station on Classical 91.5 FM, or the local and thoughtfully different music on WRUR and WITH — you affirmed the value that the WXXI family of radio stations provides to the communities we serve. On air, online, or on screen, we are dedicated to providing you with programming that is enlightening, engaging, and relevant. In March our Innovation Trail team will present a range of reports analyzing New York State’s challenges on issues such as energy independence, workforce development, the future of imported hydro-electric, and investments in renewables. This coverage is in response to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s ambitious agenda for the State’s energy sector. Also in the newsroom, WXXI’s Education Reporter, Hélène Biandudi, is working on a 60-minute documentary connected to WXXI’s Schools for South Sudan project. Hélène traveled to the war-torn village of Mayan-Abun, South Sudan in early January to document the growth of the new Ajong Primary School built by funds raised by Rochesterarea residents. Hélène’s reporting included interviews with students, teachers, education leaders in South Sudan, and the first-elected female governor of East Africa. WXXI’s Need to Know Rochester will air her first story on Schools for South Sudan this month. In April I hope to share news of WXXI bringing home a New York Emmy®. Our Frank Lloyd Wright’s Boynton House: The Next Hundred Years was just nominated and the Emmy winners will be announced April 14 in New York City. The documentary shares how Fran Cosentino and Jane Parker worked to restore Rochester’s only Frank Lloyd Wright house to its original beauty. They were committed to bringing back the historical essence of this home and preserving its history for all of Rochester to appreciate, and WXXI was committed to sharing their story. From a life-changing episode of Second Opinion, an NPR “driveway moment,” a Ready to Learn teachers workshop, a poignant film screening at The Little, or a WXXI production that spotlights a Rochester treasure, we promise to keep you engaged, informed, and inspired with programs and services that only public media can provide. Thank you for your support – we couldn’t do it without you!

Norm Silverstein, WXXI President norms@wxxi.org

Spotlight on a WXXI Business Partner According to Aimee Frank, director of marketing, “Rochester Broadway Theatre League (RBTL) owns and manages Rochester’s Auditorium Theatre, home to a full season of touring Broadway shows. The Theatre also hosts live concerts, comedy, and dramatic events and is used by local performing groups for recitals and other presentations. The heart of RBTL’s business is its nationally recognized and award-winning arts education programs which reach thousands of students in the Greater Rochester area each year. RBTL’s mission is to provide opportunities for all people to experience, understand, and enjoy the best in arts and performance through its prize-winning education programs. We strive to offer diverse performances that reflect the highest standards of excellence and to make those performances accessible to the broadest possible audience.” When asked about RBTL’s partnership with WXXI, Frank explained, “Supporting WXXI is an affordable means of reaching members of the community who value the cultural impact of performance arts. Arts and Education are the focus of our business so we very proud to provide underwriting support in those areas.” If RBTL could offer advice to other organizations considering a partnership with WXXI, Frank suggested, “It is nice to be able to support a fellow non-profit while still meeting our marketing needs. I would suggest other organizations take a closer look at the wide variety of marketing options WXXI has to offer – including those with the Little Theatre. I had no idea there was such variety!” On a personal note Frank added, “We are huge fans of ‘Stage Notes’ on Classical FM 91.5 with host Robert Hammond!”

“ The heart of RBTL’s business is its nationally recognized and awardwinning arts education programs which reach thousands of students in the Greater Rochester area each year.” —Aimee Frank, Director of Marketing

RBTL’s remaining season includes a special three-week return engagement of WICKED in April and the 25th Anniversary production of LES MISÉRABLES in May. Visit rbtl.org on March 14th for the announcement of the 2013-2014 M&T Bank Broadway Season. A Year Inside an American School Monday, March 25 and Tuesday, March 26 at 9 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD As part of “American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen,” a national public media initiative to help communities across America to address the high school dropout crisis, WXXI presents 180 Days: A Year Inside an American School. This two-part special gives space and breadth to our nation’s education reform debate by giving the audience a first-hand view of what happens in a school that meets the needs of the most challenged students in new and sometimes non-traditional ways. Observe a tireless team of teachers and school leaders dealing with the usual antics of teenagers and the changing tides of a fast-moving administration that is responding to pressures from outside partners, politicians and forces in the community. A surprising and dramatic end to the school year sheds light on both the extraordinary challenges and opportunities today’s public schools face.

A preview screening of 180 Days will show at the Little Theatre on Monday, March 18 at 7p.m. The film will be followed by a panel discussion. This event is free and open to the public. This event is made possible by a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the National Black Programming Consortium. American Graduate programming on WXXI-TV/HD is supported in part by Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection.

America’s Test Kitchen Radio Food has become a national obsession and with it a multitude of flashy programs, magazines, books and blogs ranging from pure entertainment to celebrity showcases. Yet they aren’t much help to the everyday look. America’s Test Kitchen Radio is a food program for right now – filled with clear, practical information, without the gourmet fuss. The hour is all about insights, tips, and techniques that illuminate the truth about real home cooking. Each week, host Chris Kimball introduces you to an eclectic collection of test cooks and food experts from the Test Kitchen, and people who come at food and cooking from unique and useful perspectives, with rich stories to tell.

1370 Forums & AM 1370 Specials America Abroad: Religious Minorities in the Middle East Sunday, March 3 at 9 p.m. The Middle East is largely Muslim but it’s also the birthplace of Christianity, Judaism, and many other religions. Many non-Muslims have left in recent decades, leaving relatively small populations of non-Muslims and Muslim minority sects. Now, the rise of Islamist political parties in the Mideast raises questions about the rights and protections such minorities can expect or whether they can expect them at all. Uncertainty in Egypt, Syria’s Alawi population, Jewish life in Tunisia under Ennahda, declining religious diversity in the Middle East, U.S. efforts to ensure religious freedom, religious persecution in the Mideast are topics covered.

Intelligence Squared US: “Should We Prohibit Genetically Engineered Babies?” Sunday, March 10 at 9 p.m. Parents can already screen a fetus for its sex and test for genetic diseases. The day when they can choose their child’s height, eye color, and intelligence may be closer than we think. Is this a form of eugenics? Is it morally wrong for parents to engineer their babies, or is it morally wrong to deprive their children of the benefits of genetic enhancement?

Intelligence Squared US: “Does America Need a Strong Dollar?” Sunday, March 24 at 9 p.m. The assumption is that having a “strong dollar” is always good for the economy, yielding low import prices, low inflation rates, and making the dollar attractive to foreign investors. But in a recession, could a weak dollar policy accelerate our recovery with low export prices that encourage foreign countries to buy more U.S. goods cheaply?

Saturdays, March 9, 16, and 23 at 11 a.m. on Classical 91.5

M

ichael Lasser, host of Fascinatin’ Rhythm, celebrates the music of Kurt Weill with three shows dedicated to the German-American composer. Kurt Weill, American, airing Saturdays, March 9, 16 and 23 at 11 a.m. on Classical 91.5 and on public radio stations across the country, sets the stage for the 15th Annual Lotte Lenya Competition. The competition will take place in April at the Eastman School of Music. The series is funded in part by the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music, Inc. In the Kurt Weill, American series, Lasser presents commentary and songs by Weill and his collaborators. You’ll also hear from Kim Kowalke, who is the Richard L. Turner Professor of Humanities at the University of Rochester and President of the Weill Foundation. Plus, Lasser shares archival interviews with Weill and three of his lyricists – Ira Gershwin, Ogden Nash, and Langston Hughes. Kurt Weill began his career in the early 1920s, after a musical childhood and several years of study in Berlin.

By the time his first opera, The Protagonist (Georg Kaiser), was performed in April 1926, he was an established young German composer. But he had already decided to devote himself to the musical theater, and his works with Bertolt Brecht soon made him famous all over Europe. He fled the new Nazi leadership in 1933 and lived in Paris for a few years before making the U.S. his permanent home. Some of his most well-known works include: The Threepenny Opera, Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, The Pledge, Lady in the Dark, and Street Scene. In celebration of Weill, Lasser will also host a special performance of Weill’s music at The Harley School’s Wilson Arts Center, on Sunday, April 7 at 2 p.m., which includes songs written by Weill and his American collaborators with performances by Cindy Miller and Alan Jones. The Eastman Opera Theatre will also present Weill and Hughes’ Street Scene April 4-7, and Nazareth College Department of Theatre Arts will perform The Threepenny Opera April 12-14 and 19-21. photos courtesy of the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music

Lotte Lenya Competition

T

his year marks the 15th anniversary of the Lotte Lenya Competition, which is held annually at Kilbourn Hall at Eastman School of Music (ESM). The competition was established in honor of Weill’s wife Lotte Lenya, who was an extraordinary singer/actress. The competition recognizes talented young singer/actors who are dramatically and musically convincing in repertoire ranging from opera/operetta to contemporary Broadway scores, with a focus on the works of Kurt Weill. Semifinalists audition in New York City March 15-16. After the semi-finals, a select group will be invited to compete in the finals on April 13 at ESM.

WXXI welcomes the return of spring with a whole new season of Live from Hochstein! Kicking off the new season is the RPO Marimba Band. Described as “one of the Rochester area’s unique and notable treasures” (SUNY Brockport The Stylus), the band was established in 1979 by Bill and Ruth Cahn and John Beck, and is comprised of members of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra’s current percussion section. The band continues a halfcentury of tradition that was established in the 1950s by the Eastman School of Music’s “Marimba Masters”. Hosted by Classical 91.5’s Mona Seghatoleslami, Live from Hochstein is the longest running live broadcast concert series in Western New York. Broadcast live from the Hochstein Performance Hall, the series presents performances by some of the finest artists from the Rochester area’s musical community. Each of these free “brown bag” concerts runs from 12:10-12:50 p.m., giving downtown business people, teachers, families, students and friends an opportunity to enjoy classical music during their lunch hour.

Speak

Wednesday, March 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Little

The Little Theatre and TNT Toastmasters present Speak, a documentary film about the fear of public speaking and the Toastmasters World Championship of Public Speaking. Filmmakers Paul Galichia and Brian Weidling embarked on an almost two year journey — conducting hundreds of interviews about public speaking anxiety, and capturing every stage of the tense, highly competitive World Championship of Public Speaking. It all culminates in a week of fascinating human drama in Calgary, Alberta, after which one person is crowned “World Champion of Public Speaking”. Funny, inspiring, moving, and utterly absorbing, Speak follows the trail of those brave souls who take on the fear of public speaking – the world’s #1 fear – and live to tell the tale. Tickets are $10.

Cavalleria

Pagliacci

March 17 at 12 p.m. & March 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Little Opera fans’ favorite double billing, Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci, are two brief operas that pack a big punch. The Wall Street Journal raves, “It wasn’t just good—it was magnificent.” As the betrayed clown Canio, tenor José Cura has “a thrilling voice and charisma to burn…a supercharged performer.” (The Telegraph) Don’t miss this world-class production from Teatro alla Scala. Conducted by Daniel Harding and directed by Mario Martone, the operas star Luciana D’Intino and José Cura. Sung in Italian with English subtitles. Tickets are $18 for Little members and $20 for non-members. photo: Emerging Pictures

PinkSaris

Sampat Pal is the leader of the Gulabi Gang (aka the Pink Gang), a vigilante group of women in Northern India distinguished by their distinctive bright pink saris. Like many other women, Pal was married as a young girl into a family that made her work hard and often beat her. Unlike most other Indian women, she overcame her problems to become an outspoken, selfdescribed “messiah” for women. Pink Saris highlights Sampat Pal’s strength and passion as a leader, as well as her unique way of resolving disputes, it also sheds light on her private troubles. Her partner, Babuji, who has watched Pal change over the years, is less certain about her high-profile methods.
