With so much talk about “community,” sometimes we lose perspective on the real stories of the people working to make homes, lives, and neighborhoods across the country. In State of the Re:Union, Public Radio Talent Quest winner Al Letson (pictured) is traveling the country to find

1370 Forum & AM 1370 Specials State of the City airs Monday, May 3 at 7 p.m./ State of the County airs Friday, May 7 at 7 p.m. WXXI News will present the addresses of both City of Rochester Mayor Robert Duffy and County Executive Maggie Brooks, including analysis as they happen, on AM 1370. Spiritual Reflections From Combat: The Bill Schiebler Story airs Monday, May 31 at 12 p.m. Bill Schiebler, 24, was a first lieutenant sent to fight in the central highlands of Viet Nam with the First Air Cavalry Division. After 5 months of ferocious combat, Schiebler was one of just four soldiers left from the 186 men who were part of his original rifle company. Schiebler was wounded over 10 times, receiving the Bronze Star for Valor and 4 purple hearts. In this program, Schiebler shares his story.
Tim O’Brien Memorial Day Special airs Monday, May 31 at 1 p.m, repeats at 11 p.m. On the 20th anniversary of the release of Tim O’Brien’s contemporary classic, “Selected Shorts” presents the author’s stirring tale of foot soldiers in the Vietnam War. “The Things They Carried” is a powerful if fictional portrayal of the reality of America’s doomed enterprise in Vietnam. It’s the title story of a book in which O’Brien follows one platoon of grunts. The book’s fantastic literary conceit is that the troops’ experience is best conveyed by listing in detail what they carried in their backpacks and pockets, and on their shoulders and necks.
