OCTOBER 2 011

Prohibition

WXXI is proud to bring you Ken Burns’ and Lynn Novick’s newest three-part documentary series, Prohibition. Set in the era of bathtub gin, bootleggers and speakeasies, the series tells the true story of the rise, rule and fall of the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It was called the “Noble Experiment,” but it was in fact one of America’s most notorious civic failures, an object lesson in the challenge of legislating human behavior. Prohibition premieres Sunday, October 2 at 8 p.m. and runs through Tuesday, October 4 on WXXI-TV/HD

WXXI’s Second Opinion returns with a new season that promises to ignite the most open, yet credible medical conversations on television. In each episode, Emmy award-winning veteran host Dr. Peter Salgo presents a medical mystery to a panel of experts that must identify the ailment and present the best diagnosis. Produced by WXXI, University of Rochester Medical Center, and West 175 Productions, season eight kicks off Friday, October 7 at 10 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD, and on more than 250 PBS stations across the country.

1370 Connection Forums & AM 1370 Specials American RadioWorks’ Some College, No Degree: Why So Many Americans Drop Out of College, and What to Do About It airs Sunday, October 2 at 10 p.m. Everyone knows there’s a high school dropout problem in the U.S., but the college dropout rate is worse. Nearly a quarter of American adults started college but didn’t finish - about 37 million people. Now they’re being left behind in an economy increasingly focused on workers with degrees. Producer Emily Hanford examines why so many people start college but don’t graduate, what’s being done to bring them back, and whether a college degree is the answer for everyone. American RadioWorks’ Don’t Lecture Me: Rethinking the Way College Students Learn airs Sunday, October 9 at 10 p.m. In an increasingly competitive global economy the best jobs go to highly skilled workers who can think well and learn fast. Are today’s college graduates up to the challenge? Many experts say no. Producer Emily Hanford explores how traditional approaches to teaching are failing to provide many college students with the knowledge they need way.

American RadioWorks’ Who Needs an English Major? The Future of Liberal Arts Education airs Sunday, October 16 at 10 p.m. The most popular college major in America these days is business. Some students think it doesn’t pay to study philosophy or history. But advocates of liberalarts programs advocates say their graduates are still among the most likely to become leaders, and that a healthy democracy depends on citizens with a broad and deep education. In this program, American RadioWorks’ Stephen Smith examines how a form of higher learning unique to the United States is responding to the demands of the 21st century. The The Horror of it All airs Monday, October 31 at 1:30 and 11:30 p.m. Why do people get so much pleasure from movies that frighten them out of their wits? Expert Stephen Prince says horror films allow us to explore the anxieties of our times along with questions about human nature, all from the safety of a darkened movie theatre. Also: science fiction writer John Rosenman says the genre has come a long way since the early days of Buck Rogers.
