Spotlight on a WXXI Business Partner
“…WXXI listeners, viewers, and Little Theatre patrons are interested in educating themselves...Learning where your food comes from and eating locally and seasonally are two…contemporary issues that Lento advocates.” —Jennifer LaMarche, Restaurant Manager
Located in the Village Gate Square, Lento Restaurant is a casual farmto-table restaurant that focuses on local, seasonal, and fresh foods. “Lento is an informal restaurant where you can stop in for a quick bite — or to have a 5-course meal! It’s not just for “special occasions,” explains Jennifer LaMarche, Restaurant Manager at Lento. “We make everything from scratch – condiments, pastas, sauces, dressings, breads, desserts — and all of our meat is from local farms!” In addition to supporting local farmers, LaMarche points out that underwriting on WXXI is another way Lento supports the community. As an avid WXXI listener himself, chef/owner Arthur Rogers frequently listens to “The Splendid Table,” a culinary, culture, and lifestyle radio program that celebrates the intersection of food and life on AM 1370, Sundays at 3pm. LaMarche and Rogers feel that WXXI and Little Theatre audiences might share similar values. “Typically, WXXI listeners, viewers, and Little Theatre patrons are interested in educating themselves about current events and issues. Learning where your food comes from and eating locally and seasonally are two of these contemporary issues that Lento advocates,” according to LaMarche. “Another benefit of partnering with WXXI for the restaurant business was having multiple media choices for our messages — from a cinema advertising slide and radio spots to Web site placements and even live TV exposure during a pledge drive.” Lento Restaurant is open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday with popular al fresco patio seating available. Visit www.Lentorestaurant.com for information on daily menu changes and weekly specials.
Making the World a Better Place In the future, who will teach children to read? Who will share the best in arts and culture? Who will explore the world around us and the issues that affect our lives? With your help, WXXI will. We all want to leave the world a better place and one way to do that is to leave a bequest to WXXI. A bequest is perhaps the easiest and most tangible way to leave a lasting legacy. When you give to WXXI, you really are giving to our entire community through WXXI. A bequest is a gift made through your will or trust. There are several ways to make a bequest to WXXI to have a significant impact on our community for years to come: • Specific dollar amount • Specific asset • Percentage of your estate • Residue of your estate For more information on how to create a lasting legacy through a bequest, please log on to our web site at wxxilegacy.org or contact Kathy Reed, Director of Major and Planned Giving, at (585) 258-0319 or at kreed@wxxi.org.

Dear Friends, This August marks the 50th anniversary of the historic Civil Rights March on Washington. WXXI is pleased to honor this anniversary with special programming.
Norm Silverstein
The entire evening of Tuesday, August 27 on WXXI-TV is dedicated to the March. It begins at 8 p.m. with an encore of In Performance at the White House: A Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement. At 9 p.m. we premiere The March, a new documentary that remembers and honors the March on Washington, including the famous “I Have a Dream” speech by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We conclude the evening with the Independent Lens film The Power Broker: Whitney Young’s Fight for Civil Rights. Whitney M. Young Jr. was one of the most celebrated — and controversial — leaders of the civil rights era. This documentary follows his journey from segregated Kentucky to head of the National Urban League. Of course, our coverage doesn’t stop there. Listen for special programming from NPR and interviews with Rochesterians who took part in the Civil Rights Movement, as WXXI helps put this anniversary in context – what the events of 1963 meant to our community and what still needs to be done today to ensure equality for all. Looking ahead to the fall, fans of the PBS NewsHour will be pleased to learn of an expansion of the program to seven days. WXXI will air the new weekend edition on Saturdays and Sundays at 6:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD, starting September 7. I hope you’ve had a chance to check out the recent upgrades we’ve made to the Little Theatre. Digital projectors have been installed in Theaters 3, 4 and 5. Theater 2 reopened with new seats – with cup holders, new carpeting and lighting, as well as much-needed digital technology. If you helped match the funds provided by Empire State Development to make this project a reality, thank you! Our “Screen Saver” campaign continues, as we work toward a complete restoration of Theater 1. You can learn more about the campaign and the work being done by visiting The Little Website at thelittle.org. Finally, I’m excited to share the news that From the Top is coming back to Rochester March 19. The program is the premiere showcase for young musicians throughout the nation. Last time From the Top visited Rochester, the concert was packed (so just a heads-up to keep an eye out for ticket information, when it becomes available). As you can see, there’s a lot going on WXXI and The Little. Visit us at WXXI.org to keep in touch – and thanks for your support! Best regards,
Norm Silverstein, WXXI President norms@wxxi.org

RENEW AS A SUSTAINER Susan Hollis
became a WXXI Sustaining Member and here’s why in her own words: “I can be considerably more generous if I give a bit every month rather than one big chunk. And, I simply see the need to keep Classical Music going. With fewer and fewer stations carrying it, well, we need to have it; it’s part of our heritage.”
Have you ever considered becoming a Sustaining Member of WXXI? Sustainers provide a reliable source of income through ongoing monthly gifts of as little as $5 a month. AWARD WINNERS
July proved to be an award-winning month for two of our children’s programs. WXXI’s national financial literacy series Biz Kid$ received a Daytime Emmy Award for “Outstanding Achievement In Single Camera Editing.” The series was also nominated this year for “Outstanding Achievement In Sound Editing - Live Action” and “Outstanding Achievement In Sound Mixing - Live Action.” Biz Kid$, co-produced by WXXI and Biz Kid$, LLP, is distributed nationally by American Public Television. Major funding is provided by National Credit Union Foundation, Coalition of America’s Credit Unions, and LoveMyCreditUnion.org. Biz Kid$ airs weekdays at 6 a.m. and Fridays at 5:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV.
Homework Hotline
WXXI’s Homework Hotline received the award for “Best Program or Series Designed for Children” from the New York State Broadcasters Association (NYSBA). Homework Hotline is a live call-in TV show, where kids get help with homework problems right on the air. Designed for children in grades four through 12, it provides the tools students need to succeed in school, and supports academic achievement across a variety of NYS Learning Standards. Homework Hotline is funded in part by the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT). The program airs Monday through Thursday at 5:30 p.m. during the school year on WXXI-TV.
Hosted by Nazareth College, WXXI, and the Little Theatre, this annual celebration of youth filmmakers honors the work of teen filmmakers and gives young people an authentic opportunity to participate in a real film festival. From April to June, Nazareth College held an open call for films and videos in all genres from regional high school students, ages 13-18. Submissions are judged by a jury and finalists are select to have their films shown at a special screening at the Little Theatre on Wednesday, August 7, at 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, visit: www.naz.edu/rochester-teen-film-festival-film-camp
SATURDAYS AT 10 P.M., BEGINNING AUGUST 10
Hebburn is a warm and affectionate tale of northeast family life. It tells the tale of the Pearson family and their impetuous and ambitious son, Jack, who has left Tyneside for the bright lights and glamour of Manchester. He has secretly married (while drunk in Las Vegas) a middle class Jewish girl, Sarah, and realizes that it is about time he introduced her to his family. Jim Moir and Gina McKee play Jack’s parents, Joe and Pauline, who are devoted to their family and their
hometown. Jan Ravens and Phil Nice star as Sarah’s parents, Susan and Ben, who have to contend with their daughter marrying into a family from a very different background. Other characters include Jack’s fun-loving sister Vicki; his Grandmother, Dot, who likes to keep everyone ‘up to speed’ on her bowel movements; Sarah’s hippy sister Marial; Jack’s ‘larger than life’ friend Big Keith; and Vicki’s best friend Denise, and her boyfriend Gervaise.

sundays, august 4-18 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV In the Medieval and Tudor world there was no question in people’s minds about the order of God’s creation – men ruled and women did not. A king was a warrior who literally fought to win power, then battled to keep it. Yet, despite everything that stood in their way, a handful of extraordinary women did attempt to, and finally succeeded at, ruling medieval and Tudor England. In this series, Helen Castor explores the lives of seven queens who challenged male power.

“Snap Judgment” tells intriguing stories about extraordinary and defining events in people’s lives. The program’s raw, intimate, and musical brand of storytelling dares listeners to see a sliver of the world through another’s eye. “Snap Judgment” host Glynn Washington takes listeners on a narrative journey - leaping from one person’s frying pan into another person’s fire. Deejay-driven musical delivery, paired with lush sound design, drops listeners into the very heart of what matters. “Snap Judgment’s” fast-paced (sometimes dark, sometimes playful) narrative highlights people from across the globe who put everything on the line. Glynn Washington explains, “It’s storytelling... with a beat. It’s the Robert Frost thing: the roads diverge, and you have to make a choice. You always wonder what your life would have been if you’d gone the other way.”

“Stuck in the Psychedelic Era” is a weekly two hour radio show featuring music from roughly the years 1964-70. The show is rooted in the music generated by self-contained American bands of the late 1960s (and their British inspirations), yet is constantly expanding beyond those roots to create an eclectic blend of music unlike anything else in modern radio. Much of the music is taken directly from vintage vinyl, scratches and all. The rest comes from Compact Disc compilations and re-issues of original albums, all taken from the Hermit’s personal collection.

CLASSIC FILMS AND CLASSICAL MUSIC
Without the classical score, 2001: A Space Odyssey would just be a space movie. Amadeus would be a film about Mozart. Koyaanisqatsi would be a series of unrelated film clips, shown at random. But add iconic pieces of classical music, and these visuals bloom into emotional, sound-driven masterpieces. On the first three Saturdays of August, these films will screen in our theatres as the Classical 91.5 Film Series, with expert panel discussions following. These were never meant to be watched alone on a 14-inch screen with tinny computer speakers, but rather in a theatre full of people laughing, gasping, and crying, immersed in a sea of sound. Movies are a communal experience. Come hear every note of each crescendo as it carries you through the story. Buy tickets in advance at http://bit.ly/1ayIAlZ
Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out of Balance (1982) 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) A film with no dialogue, characters, or self-evident plot, Koyaanisqatsi is rarely on the silver screen these days. But what better place than the Little to sink into this cinematic tour-de-force, a series of stunning images contrasting human civilization and nature, examining how we interact. Set to an overwhelming score by Philip Glass, you will watch and reconsider where you actually fit into this world.

REASONS TO VISIT THE LITTLE IN AUGUST
The film that dared to imagine the calmly terrifying moment a computer says, “I’m sorry Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that.” Stanley Kubrick leverages intense musical power to fix this space epic forever in cinematic history.
Saturday, August 10 at 1 p.m.
Amadeus (1984) The at-once hilarious and tragic story of Mozart, as told by his admirer, rival and assassin. If ever there was a film with wide comic and cultural appeal, a vehicle for carrying classical music to every ear, it is Amadeus.
Saturday, August 17 at 1 p.m.
1. Our movies are so cool, you don’t need air conditioning. But we do have air conditioning. We do. So there’s that too.
2. August is Audio Appreciation month. We have new closed captioning equipment in selected theatres, and infrared loop headphones, which enhance hearing aids for patrons who are hard of hearing.
3. Our new digital projection is so sharp and clear, you can see the future, almost.
4. We aren’t showing The Lone Ranger. 5. Now is the time to make memories with your kids and siblings. They go back to school in like four weeks. Matinee plus lunch. Boom. Awesome memory, cherished forever.
6. Our theatres may be the only place in Rochester where people aren’t tweeting, texting, talking, ‘gramming, gaming or Googling. They’re just watching films, together.
BLACK FISH
Tilikum is a performing killer whale. It killed several people while in captivity. This is the story. Director-producer Gabriela Cowperthwaite compiles shocking footage and emotional interviews to explore the creature’s extraordinary nature, the species’ cruel treatment in captivity, the lives and losses of the trainers, and the pressures brought to bear by the multi-billion dollar sea-park industry. This emotionally wrenching, tautly structured story challenges us to consider our relationship to nature and reveals how little we humans have learned from these highly-intelligent and enormously sentient fellow mammals. Gabriela Cowperthwaite will give a talkback after the screening via Skype. One Take: Stories through the Lens is a monthly documentary series held at the Little, hosted by Linda Moroney. The series presents a unique mix of documentaries—ranging from film festival favorites to unheralded gems—followed by talkback discussions. Tuesday August 13 at 7 p.m. One Take is supported by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
