Jane and Larry Glazer

Dear Friends, We lost two very good friends and dedicated members of the WXXI/Little Board of Trustees last month. It’s been a very difficult time, as we mourn the tragic deaths of Jane and Larry Glazer in the crash of their small plane in September. Jane and Larry loved this community, and touched so many lives. They were people who believed in the future of Rochester, who believed that this was a city worth fighting for. Their loss is deeply felt by so many of us whose lives they touched. If you knew Larry, you understood that his Buckingham Properties group always looked for the difficult projects, ones that others might pass on. Larry was committed to the future of Rochester and wanted to make a difference. He was one of the strongest supporters of WXXI’s affiliation with the Little Theatre. He thought it would be good for the East End cultural district, for the city, and for both organizations. Jane Glazer also owned a major local business, QCI Direct. She was scheduled to be inducted into the Rochester Business Hall of Fame this month. They were both successful business people and community leaders. They were quiet philanthropists, contributing to many worthy causes and serving on the boards of numerous local organizations. Their appreciation for WXXI and the Little Theatre was expressed by their co-chairing our “Go Public” Campaign. They believed in the future of Rochester, whether it was taking on another ambitious downtown real estate project, as Larry often did, or expanding a business in Rochester and keeping the jobs here, as Jane did. As a friend of Larry’s told me, “they always had time for every place and everyone.” They truly did. Best Regards,

Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org @normWXXI

NEWS&EVENTS

Q&A with a WXXI underwriter In spring 2003 a small winery opened on the eastern slope of Keuka Lake between two deep ravines. For the last ten years, Ravines Wine Cellars owners Morton Hallgren, a French-trained Oenologist (wine engineer), and his wife, Lisa Hallgren, have focused on crafting elegant and expressive wines in the European tradition. Lisa, who is a Chef and Foodie, described their distinctive winery below. Q. Why do you feel Ravines is a valuable asset to the Finger Lakes wine community? We are part a new generation of Finger Lakes wine producers who concentrate on high-quality, terroir-driven wines. Q. What has been the most important business practice for your winery operations? For every vintage we direct our resources to making the best quality wine possible—everything else comes second. Q: What would you like the WXXI audience to know about Ravines? Our wines are a unique style within the Finger Lakes appellation… and please don’t discount us just because we are in your own backyard! Q. What distinguishes Ravines from other wineries in the Finger Lakes area? The style of our wines — they are a transparent expression of the land, grapes, and vintage. We make wines that express the unique characteristics of where the grapes are grown. Until we started making our Dry Riesling, there was no one making a Riesling like that: dry and mineral-driven with delicate floral aromatics and vivacious acidity. This wine has twice been listed by Wine Spectator magazine as one of the top 100 most interesting wines of the world! Ravines Wine Cellars has two tasting locations: the Seneca Lake Tasting Room in Geneva, and the original Keuka Lake Tasting Room in Hammondsport. www.ravineswine.com Morton and lisa Hallgren

WXXI Receives a Grant from CPB to Improve

Youth Outcomes

in Rochester

WXXI has been awarded a $200,000 American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen community service grant from The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) to help Rochester, NY improve youth outcomes for all students from preschool through college and onto careers. The nation’s graduation rate is at 80%, yet significant “graduation gaps” still exist for students of different races, ethnicities, family incomes, and disabilities, as well as those with limited English proficiency. The Rochester City School District continues to struggle with a graduation rate of 43%. WXXI’s American Graduate initiative will make Rochesterians aware that the dropout crisis is a community problem that impacts all of us. WXXI News reports will engage the community in discussion about the issues, while providing strategies and resources that are available to help students succeed. WXXI will cover key issues and connect people to resources and current efforts to stem chronic absenteeism and help to keep students engaged. It will also use WXXI’s Educational Outreach Center’s services and programming to support families and educators in preparing our children for success as college and career-ready graduates. WXXI is part of the national American Graduate initiative in partnership with 33 other public media stations around the country. To learn more, visit WXXI.org/grad. American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen, a public media initiative supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to help local communities across America address the dropout crisis.

WXXI VOLUNTEER CATHERINE USANDIVARAS WILL BE MISSED In August WXXI lost long-time friend and volunteer Catherine Usandivaras. She worked on WXXI’s Auction, answered phones during radio and TV drives, and served as a docent. She was a big supporter of public broadcasting and an ambassador for the station. An aerobics instructor by trade, Catherine led an amazing life filled with incredible experiences including attending Queen Elizabeth’s coronation, being a special guest of Dictator Franco of Spain, and having a private audience with the Pope. She was a big fan of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and the Rochester Rhinos. We are grateful to Catherine and her family for designating WXXI as a beneficiary of donations in her memory.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 10 AT 9PM ON WXXI-TV Douglas Carter Beane’s acclaimed Tony Awardnominated play The Nance, produced by Lincoln Center Theater, stars stage and screen actor Nathan Lane. The play tells the story of Chauncey Miles (Lane), a headline nance (a parody of a gay man) in the twilight of New York’s burlesque’s era, who is homosexual. Integrating burlesque sketches into his drama, Beane paints the portrait of a homosexual man, living and working in the secretive and dangerous gay world of 1930’s New York, whose outrageous antics on the burlesque stage stand in marked contrast to his offstage life. AFTER WORDS

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 12 AT 7PM ON WXXI-TV After Words movingly illuminates the struggles and triumphs of individuals touched by aphasia and related disorders. Often the result of stroke, traumatic brain injury, or neurological disease, aphasia affects an individual’s ability to communicate. It is often mistaken for a disorder of intelligence or personality. Due to this misunderstanding, there is often fear, exclusion, and stigma associated with aphasia. The National Aphasia Association estimates that over one million Americans are affected by aphasia which can take many forms. Through the portraits of individuals overcoming aphasia, After Words is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. This program is part of MOVE TO INCLUDE, a partnership between WXXI and the Golisano Foundation designed to promote inclusion for people with intellectual and physical disabilities. Watch this documentary and then share your thoughts with us at: www.movetoinclude.org.

CURIOUS GEORGE:

A HALLOWEEN BOO FEST

10/27 and 10/31 at 3PM on WXXI-TV Hang onto your hats, Halloween is almost here! Curious George can’t wait for the festivities to begin: pumpkin carving, costume contests, and especially the Annual Boo Festival in town But the real fun begins when Bill tells George and Allie about the Legend of No Noggin, a spooky tale about a hatkicking scarecrow that haunts the countryside on Halloween.

the political junkie Ken Rudin returns to the airwaves with the same focus and enthusiasm listeners loved on NPR’s Talk of the Nation and It’s All Politics. Now, with Ken in the host chair, he brings his decades of experience, encyclopedic mind and famous wit to present politics in an informative, nonpartisan and entertaining way.

Each week, Ken looks back on noteworthy moments in our country’s political history, and talks to the key players who were there about how those events impact our national politics today. The show also includes a ScuttleButton and Trivia segment, where Ken continues his beloved weekly trivia question and ScuttleButton puzzles that were a staple during his appearances on Talk of the Nation. You’ll be challenged to showcase your political knowledge and wit by answering Ken’s political trivia questions and solving Ken’s ScuttleButton puzzles. Hundreds of listeners participate in these contests in the hopes of being randomly picked to win a coveted Political Junkie button.

AM 1370 Specials AMERICAN Radio Works “ready to work: reviving vocational ed” airs sunday, october 5 at 9 pm on am 1370

Intelligence Squared U.S.: Does The Mass Collection of Phone Records Violate The Fourth Amendment?

Vocational education was once a staple of American schooling, preparing some kids for bluecollar futures while others were put on a path to college. Today that kind of tracking smacks of classism. “College for all” is the new mantra. This documentary explores how vocational education has changed and how it’s re-shaping debates about the purpose of school.

Airs Sunday, October 19 at 9 p.m.

Intelligence Squared U.S.: Will Flexing America’s Muscles In The Middle East Make Things Worse? Airs Sunday, October 12 at 9 p.m.

Breaking Ground: Military Children

The disintegration of Iraq, Syria’s ongoing civil war, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the promise and peril of the Arab Spring... What role should America play in the Middle East? For some, America’s restraint has been a sign of disciplined leadership. But for others, it has been a sign of diminished strength and influence.

Some say that indiscriminate collection of U.S. phone records is a gross invasion of privacy. Others say that it is necessary to keep us safe. Is collection of phone records a “search” or “seizure”? If so, is it “unreasonable”? Airs Sunday, October 26 at 9 p.m.

This program explores the lives of our nation’s military children. During more than a decade of war, tens of thousands of these children have watched and waited as a parent was deployed to conflict zones overseas. Now, with the Department of Defense confronting budget cuts, these children face an uncertain future.

THE LITTLE TURNS 85!

On October 9, The Little is returning to its roots. In January, we at The Little thought about how best to celebrate the theatre’s 85th anniversary. We thought about special commemorative glassware (on sale now in the Little Café). We thought about asking patrons to give suggestions for a weeklong film series spanning 85 years. We received 500 responses, and that was our 85 Years of Film Series in August. But what, we thought, could we do the month of our anniversary? What could combine the classic history of our 1929 origins with our commitment to being a relevant part of modern Rochester? Well, on October 9, we are bringing back to our screen the first film that ever graced it: Cyrano de Bergerac, the silent film produced in 1923. But we’re not just dragging this out of the attic. The Little has commissioned an entirely new score from one of our finest collaborators, the Andrew Alden Ensemble. They will be here on the ninth to accompany. The Andrew Alden Ensemble is a contemporary and electronic chamber music group from Boston. They produce textual scores for film and perform them in front of a live audience to transform the picture with new sounds and experiences. In previous years at The Little, they’ve presented Nosferatu, Night of the Living Dead, and The Lost World. They are, in a word, fantastic. Please watch thelittle.org, The Little’s email newsletter and its social media for more details as we get closer to this event, and come help us celebrate our 85th!

NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE: On Sunday, October 26 at 12:00 p.m. and Tuesday, October 28 at 6:30 p.m., The Little is pleased to present the West End production of David Hare’s Skylight, directed by Stephen Daldry, recorded from London’s West End by National Theatre Live. On a bitterly cold London evening, schoolteacher Kyra Hollis (Carey Mulligan) receives an unexpected visit from her former lover, Tom Sergeant (Bill Nighy), a successful and charismatic restaurateur whose wife has recently died. As the evening progresses, the two attempt to rekindle their once passionate relationship only to find themselves locked in a dangerous battle of opposing ideologies and mutual desires. Skylight was originally produced at the National Theatre in 1995 and won an Olivier Award for Best Play. For those not familiar with NT Live, it’s really something to see. Actual theatre performances with the best actors and directors in London are recorded with cameras carefully positioned throughout the auditorium, ensuring that Little audiences get the best seat in the house for each production. Tickets for the show are $15 for Little members, students and seniors and $20 for general public.
