WXXI PAYS TRIBUTE TO JFK
In conjunction with the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s death, WXXI-TV presents a series of specials that look closely at an enigmatic man who remains one of the nation’s most beloved and mourned leaders. American Experience presents JFK, a twopart special premiering Monday and Tuesday, November 11-12 at 9 p.m., offers a fresh assessment of the man, his accomplishments and his unfulfilled promise. NOVA’s “Cold Cast JFK,” airing Wednesday, November 13 at 9 p.m., shares what science can tell us about the Kennedy assassination — and the investigations that followed. Immediately following at 10 p.m., Secrets of the Dead presents “JFK: One PM Central Standard Time,” which tells the riveting story of the reporting from Dallas and the CBS Newsroom in New York. photo: Courtesy of Douglas Jones, LOOK Magazine Photograph Collection, Library of Congress

DEAR FRIENDS AND DOWNTON ABBEY FANS, Winter may be around the corner, but WXXI will heat things up with the season premiere of our hit series Downton Abbey. While season three ended with Norm Silverstein a tragedy, there’s much to look forward to in season four. Waiting until January 5 for the premiere episode may seem unbearable, so we’ve planned two special events to get you in the “Downton mood.” The first is a luncheon with Downton Abbey’s historical advisor Alastair Bruce. Alastair will join us on Tuesday, November 26 at The Hyatt Regency Rochester. During the lunch, he will share his experience with the show and what it’s like working with the cast. (More information about this event and how to get tickets can be found on the back cover of this magazine.) We’ll also be hosting a screening of the first hour of episode one of season four of Downton Abbey on Sunday, December 29 at the Little Theatre. This is your chance to see the premiere before it airs on WXXI-TV! In anticipation of a great turnout, we’re hosting several screenings throughout the day. We’ll serve Edwardian era treats in the Little Café and offer prizes for those who attend the screening in “Downton Abbey fashion.” You can reserve your seat online beginning November 15 at WXXI.org/tickets. We hope these two events will make the wait easier for you. January 5 will be here before you know it, and from then through February 23, we’ll be spending Sunday evenings with the Crawleys and their staff. Season four has already received rave reviews in the UK, where the new episodes are seen first. This season, the series introduces real historical characters including the Australian opera singer Dame Nellie Melba, the English writer Virginia Woolf and Jazz singer Jack Ross. Also new to the cast is Paul Giamatti, who will play Cora’s brother, Harold. I’d also like to the be among the first to share with you that WXXI-TV is planning a post-Downton Abbey show to air immediately following each episode. The show, similar to a post-game wrap up, will break down the episode from that evening, invite viewers to share their take on the show and see what “buzz” is brewing for next week’s broadcast. You’ll learn more about this WXXI production in next month’s member magazine. Before signing off, I’d like to also thank those of you who pledged during our Fall Radio Membership Drive in October. You helped us reach our goal early and, as promised, we ended the campaign almost a day ahead of schedule. Best of all, your support ensures that Morning Edition, All Things Considered, World Café, classical music and all the programming you love will continue to be there for you and our community, every day. Thank you again, and best wishes for the upcoming holiday season! Best regards
Norm Silverstein, WXXI President norms@wxxi.org

NEWS&EVENTS
If you’re a Time Warner Cable customer then you have already experienced the reconfiguration of their channel line-up. Now, you can find:
The American Tax Relief Act, passed last December, has extended the IRA Charitable Rollover through 2013. So if you’re age 70½ or older, you can use your IRA to make charitable contributions to WXXI until December 31, 2013– without your withdrawals being counted as taxable income!
For your IRA withdrawal to qualify as a tax-free gift: n You must be age 70½ or older at the time of the gift. n Transfers must be made from a traditional or Roth IRA account. Gifts from other Qualified Plans (401k, 403b, SEP, Keogh) are not eligible for this tax treatment. However, assets from these plans may be transferred to a new IRA. The IRA distributions can then be transferred directly to WXXI, thus qualifying under the new legislation. n Transfers must be made by your plan provider from your IRA account directly to WXXI. Funds you withdraw and then contribute do not qualify. n Gifts must be outright. Distributions to donor-advised funds, supporting organizations, or life-income arrangements such as charitable remainder trusts and gift annuities are precluded. For more information on how to donate to WXXI with an IRA Charitable Rollover gift, please contact your financial institution or call Kathy Reed, Assistant Vice President Major and Planned Giving at (585) 2580319 or at kreed@wxxi.org.

A pioneering electric guitarist, Jimi Hendrix (November 27, 1942 - September 18, 1970) had only four years of mainstream exposure and recognition, but his influential music and riveting stage presence left an enduring legacy. This American Masters’ special traces the gone-too-soon guitar great’s remarkable journey from his hardscrabble beginnings in Seattle, through his stint as a U.S. Army paratrooper, unknown sideman to R&B stars such as Little Richard, Joey Dee and the Isley Brothers, and his discovery and ultimate international stardom. photo: Courtesy of MRPI / Authentic Hendrix, LLC

Sattari feels fortunate that he is passionate about his work and business: “We are most satisfied when we can be of help to our customers. We enjoy talking to our customers about the craftsmanship, history, and culture that is built into oriental rugs.” As an underwriter on WXXI for more than five years, Oriental Rug Mart has received positive feedback from customers. According to Sattari, “The quality of WXXI programming, in-depth analysis, information, and overall integrity of the programs make underwriting on WXXI a great value and a great experience. We feel that people who love high-quality rugs tend to favor high-quality radio and TV programming, particularly programs like ‘All Things Considered’ (AM1370, M-F, 4-6:30 pm) and ‘Antiques Roadshow’ (WXXI-HD Digital Cable 1221/Channel 11, Mon, 8 pm). Our customers often tell us that they heard about us on WXXI. Being a sponsor of WXXI increases awareness for our business while also building a stronger relationship with our community.” Customer services at Oriental Rug Mart include professional cleaning and repair/restoration. Carpet appraisals are available upon request. Sattari pointed out that “The greatest enjoyment and rewards we receive are when we hear of a customer who loves and continues to enjoy a rug they purchased years ago.”
