Dear Friends, One of the hallmarks of public media is the responsiveness to issues and in-depth programming that you cannot find anywhere else. In October our national health series, Second Opinion, produced a special episode to address national concerns about Ebola. We Norm Silverstein spoke with American missionary worker and Ebola survivor Nancy Writebol to share the story of some of her darkest days with the disease. Travel medicine doctor and vaccine expert Mark Shelly, MD from URMC then used Nancy’s case as a springboard to discuss disease transmission, diagnosis, treatment, drug and vaccine research and development, and what the Ebola crisis in West Africa means to its citizens and to America. As a companion piece to the television broadcast Second Opinion also hosted an hour-long call-in radio show with an infectious disease expert who answered questions from callers in our community. If you had a chance to tune in to either program, I hope you found them informative. If you weren’t able to catch the programs, they are available online at secondopinion-tv.org. Speaking of Second Opinion, you’ll notice on the cover of this magazine that the series kicks off its 11th season on Thursday, November 13th at 8:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV and nationally on public television stations. Produced in partnership with the University of Rochester Medical Center and West 175 Productions, this season tackles a variety of medical topics including advances in Alzeheimer’s Disease, medical marijuana, and food as medicine. I hope you’ll join us Thursday evenings at 8:30 or Sunday afternoons at 3 p.m. on WXXI-TV for honest, in-depth discussions about life-changing medical decisions. While our Second Opinion production team was busy producing timely, relevant programming to address the needs and concerns of our community, our news department was busy covering local and state political races in anticipation of Election Day. On October 20th, WXXI also brought you the only televised gubernatorial debate in the race. That debate, coupled with ongoing reports from WXXI News and our Albany Bureau Correspondent Karen DeWitt, were designed to help you understand the candidates’ platforms so that you now have the information you need to cast your votes on Tuesday, November 4th. All this and we still had time to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the Little Theatre. On October 9th we presented a special screening of Cyrano de Bergerac, which was the very first film that played at The Little in 1929. The Andrew Alden Ensemble performed an original score for the film to a packed house that evening, while the audience shared a complimentary champagne toast and wished the theatre 85 more great years to come. As we gather with our families this month in celebration of Thanksgiving, we are reminded of how thankful we are for friends and family. I would like to personally express how thankful WXXI is for our supporters. You are our extended family and our work throughout the year could not be done without the generosity of members. Thank you, and best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday. Best Regards,

Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org @normWXXI

NEWS&EVENTS

Q&A with a WXXI underwriter Foodlink’s initial roots began in 1978, when Founder and late Executive Director, Tom Ferraro, made a televised community-wide appeal for food to support the growing number of emergency food pantries in the area. The warehouse manager at Thomas English Muffins responded with a donation that filled an entire school bus! Today Foodlink is a regional food hub and the Feeding America food bank serving 10 counties in the Finger Lakes and Genesee Valley region. They distribute food through a network of 500 human service agencies, including food pantries, shelters, soup kitchens, group homes, as well as daycare and senior centers. With the mission to end hunger and to leverage the power of food to build a healthier community, Communications Coordinator Kimberly Montinarello revealed noteworthy specifics below: Q. What quantity of food is collected and distributed over the course of a year and how many people benefit from Foodlink services? In fiscal year 2014 (which ended June 30), Foodlink distributed more than 18 million pounds of food to 200,000 individuals in need. We are excited that 3.6 million pounds of this food was produce. It’s extremely important for those who struggle with hunger to eat as healthy as possible. Q: What would you like the WXXI audience to know about Foodlink? Foodlink operations target the root causes of hunger through 30 foodrelated programs, such as our commercial kitchen, nutrition education, food access, and workforce development. We want to address the health disparities among those who are hungry and bring healthier food options to underserved communities. Q. Are there any Foodlink events in November? We are so grateful for the community’s support; Rochester is such a giving community. During November, please consider donating at the register for our “Check Out Hunger” campaign. Your donations will remain local and support our dozens of food-related programs aimed to end hunger. To learn more about underwriting on WXXI, contact underwriting@wxxi.org

SCHOOLS FOR SOUTH SUDAN THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 6 AT 8 P.M. ON WXXI-TV

WXXI’s Hélène Biandudi Hofer traveled to South Sudan to explore the issues of education, diversity and racism in the war-torn country and compare them to the issues we face in Rochester. She shares her findings in Schools for South Sudan, a documentary that focuses on the unique ties between Rochester and this young African nation. A handful of area nonprofits, all founded by former Lost Boys of Sudan, are on the ground in the nation building schools, health clinics and providing clean water in remote villages. Their goal is to bring stability and new opportunities to the people of South Sudan and their work is being supported by funds raised in the Greater Rochester area.

NORM & COMPANY

ALBERT PALEY SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 1 AT 5:30 PM ON WXXI-TV

FATHER SOLIDERS SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 16 AT 11 PM ON WXXI-TV

Father Soldier is the soulful story of the life of Leo Hetzler, a combat veteran of World War II who for the last sixty years has been a Catholic priest and educator in Rochester, NY. Moving and serious in tone, Father Soldier merges a life filled with profound experiences in a way that connects with our own separate journeys. The documentary was produced by local filmmaker Dave Esposito.

Albert Paley, one of the world’s best-known metal sculptors, joins WXXI President Norm Silverstein for an episode of Norm & Company, a monthly series where long-time Rochesterians recount fascinating stories about their lives in our community. Albert has been described as a boundary-pusher – not just because of the size of his sculptures, but because of his architectural sensibilities and his unique designs. In 2013 WXXI had the honor of chronicling his Park Avenue Project, where he created 13 sculptures for an outdoor exhibit on one of Manhattan’s best known streets. You can watch the six-part web series and the full-length documentary online at WXXI.org/paleynyc. Albert talks with Norm about his work and upcoming projects, why he has made his home and his studio in Rochester, and what he thinks is Rochester’s best-kept secret. This episode repeats Friday, November 28 at 10:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV.

AM 1370 Specials INTELLIGENCE SQUARED U.S.: DOES INCOME INEQUALITY IMPAIR INTELLIGENCE SQUARED U.S.: SHOULD WE LEGALIZE ASSISTED SUICIDE? THE AMERICAN DREAM? SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 2 AT 9 PM ON AM 1370 SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 23 AT 9 P.M. ON AM 1370 Income inequality has been on the rise for decades. In the last 30 years, the wages of the top 1% have grown by 154%, while the bottom 90% has seen growth of only 17%. As the rungs of the economic ladder move further and further apart, conventional wisdom says that it will become much more difficult to climb them. Opportunities for upward mobility — the American dream — will disappear as the deck becomes stacked against the middle class and the poor. But others see inequality as a positive, a sign of a dynamic and robust economy that, in the end, helps everyone. And contrary to public opinion, mobility has remained stable over the past few decades. If the American dream is dying, is it the result of income inequality? Or is disparity in income a red herring where more complex issues are at play?

In 1994, Oregon voters passed the Death with Dignity Act, which legalized physician-assisted suicide for the terminally ill. Since then, it has become legal in 4 more states, including New Mexico, where the state court ruling that it is constitutional is under appeal. Is it, in the words of the American Medical Association’s code of ethics, “fundamentally incompatible with the physician’s role as healer”? Will these laws lead to a slippery slope, where the vulnerable are pressured to choose death and human life is devalued? Or do we need to recognize everyone’s basic right to autonomy, the right to end pain and suffering, and the right to choose to die with dignity?

OSCAR HOPEFUL DIRECTOR COMES TO THE LITTLE

Signe Baumane

The Little is no stranger to Oscar-worthy directors and films, but it’s always exciting when one walks through the front doors. On Wednesday November 5 at 6:30 p.m., The Little is screening Rocks in My Pockets, an animated film singled out for its Oscar potential. The film’s director and subject, Signe Baumane, is coming to the theatre to chat with our audience. Rocks in My Pockets identifies itself as “a funny film about depression.” The film is based on true events involving the women of Baumane’s family, including herself, and their battles with mental illness. It raises questions of how much family genetics determine who we are and if it is possible to outsmart one’s own DNA. The film is packed with visual metaphors, surreal images and Baumane’s twisted sense of humor. It is an animated tale full of art, women, strange daring stories, Latvian accents, history, nature, adventure and more. Why is this animated film about depression? Well, as Baumane says, “Like most people I think about a wide variety of things, some fantastical, some mundane, but my mind keeps coming back to thoughts of ‘ending it all’ and the ways I could go about doing it. Why? Why do I think this way? And why I am still alive despite such thoughts? I find the fragility of our minds fascinating. Life is strange, unpredictable, sometimes absurd and I try to see the humor in it all.” Rocks in My Pockets and director Signe Baumane will be at The Little on Wednesday, November 5 at 6:30 p.m. Standard ticket prices apply.

THE BALLET IS BACK! The Little begins another season of Bolshoi Ballet productions in November. These screenings are full ballets from the world-class Bolshoi Theatre, recorded and played to audiences from the best seats of the historic Russian icon.

The Legend of Love is the first ballet of the season, and screens Sunday, November 23 at 12:00 p.m. and Tuesday, November 25 at 6:30 p.m. The royal apartments of Queen Mekhmene Banu are plunged into mourning - her young sister, Princess Shyrin, is dying. The Princess will only be saved if the Queen gives Shyrin her beauty. The Queen decides to sacrifice herself, but later regrets her action when she is disfigured and Shyrin falls in love with the Queen’s own lover, the painter Ferkhad. Featuring dance movements, sets and costumes inspired by the Middle East, this stunning ballet, which uses pure dance to tell the story, is further enriched by the talent of the Bolshoi troupe. For future Bolshoi screenings at The Little, visit thelittle.org!

Maria Hinojosa coming to Rochester! On November 13 at 6:30pm, Maria Hinojosa, host of the new PBS series, America By the Numbers, will be at The Little to premiere a new episode that hits close to home. A panel discussion, moderated by Maria Hinojosa, will follow the screening. The episode will broadcast on WXXI-TV on November 15 at 6:30pm. The episode “Surviving The First Year” looks at the infant mortality rate. While the U.S. spends more on healthcare than any other nation, and the biggest portion goes towards pregnancy and childbirth, the nation ranks 56th lowest in the world for infant mortality. To find out more about this critical issue, the series visits Rochester—where babies are dying at a rate almost twice the national average, and where mothers of color are two times as likely as white mothers to lose their babies before their first birthday. The screening and the following discussion with host Maria Hinojosa are joint effort between America By the Numbers, WXXI, The Little and free and open to the public. This event and series is part of WXXI’s American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen Initiative. For more information go to: http://wxxi.org/grad
