This year marks the 50th anniversary of the historic three-day race riot that erupted in two African-American neighborhoods in Rochester. In remembrance, WXXI will present July ’64, a film that tells the story of the riot. On the night of July 24, 1964, frustration and resentment brought on by institutional racism, overcrowding, lack of job opportunity, and police dog attacks exploded in racial violence that brought Rochester to its knees. Directed by Carvin Eison and produced by Chris Christopher, July ’64 combines historic archival footage, news reports, and interviews with witnesses and participants to dig deeply into the causes and effects of the historic disturbance. In addition to the film, WXXI News will present, the week of July 21, a series of news features about this important anniversary and the issue of race. Coverage will include a special segment on Need to Know on WXXI-TV and a discussion on Connections with Evan Dawson on AM 1370.
