This year marks the 50th anniversary of the historic three-day race riot that erupted in two African-American neighborhoods in Rochester. In remembrance, WXXI will present July ’64, a film that tells the story of the riot. On the night of July 24, 1964, frustration and resentment brought on by institutional racism, overcrowding, lack of job opportunity, and police dog attacks exploded in racial violence that brought Rochester to its knees.

Directed by Carvin Eison and produced

by Chris Christopher, July ’64 combines historic archival footage, news reports, and interviews with witnesses and participants to dig deeply into the causes and effects of the historic disturbance. In addition to the film, WXXI News will present, the week of July 21, a series of news features about this important anniversary and the issue of race. Coverage will include a special segment on Need to Know on WXXI-TV and a discussion on Connections with Evan Dawson on AM 1370.

Dear Friends, As you travel our region this summer, WXXI is making sure you don’t miss a moment of the news you depend on. Our free smartphone app has Norm Silverstein been popular with many listeners and, just recently, AM 1370, WRUR-FM 88.5 and WEOS-FM 89.5 (Geneva) have been made available for streaming in iTunes Radio! They were in a group of only 42 NPR public radio stations across the country to roll out on this new platform. Now you can get the local news (and music programs on WRUR) that matter to you – wherever you are and whenever you want to listen. To find our stream on iTunes Radio, type the station you listen to – WXXI, WRUR or WEOS – into the search field and “add” that station to your personal “My Stations” list for future listening.

We will continue to evolve our iTunes Radio service over the next several months, aiming to provide you with the best experience possible and to develop inventive ways to strengthen public radio throughout the Finger Lakes. Also newsworthy this month, we’ll be unveiling a new “show open” and set for Need to Know, our weekly public affairs program hosted

by Hélène Biandudi Hofer. The set renovations will allow for more fluid movement within the show, and makes possible additional guests and video components – plus it’s going to look great! We hope you’ll tune in to WXXI-TV on July 10 at 8 p.m. to check out the new look and, if you haven’t already done so, discover the indepth coverage on community issues that Need to Know provides every Thursday night. Finally, if you’ve been to The Little lately, you may have noticed that the films in Theatre 1 look sharper and sound better. That’s because it recently underwent a necessary conversion from 35mm film to digital projection. Now we can show the latest movies in brighter, stellar picture quality, with a new screen and sound system. But, don’t worry—we will also have the ability to show film (including archival 35mm) in Theatre 1, important for the film festivals and others we partner with.

Q&A with a WXXI underwriter ESL Federal Credit Union is the largest, locally led financial institution in the Rochester area with more than 320,000 members. And in my house, despite some eye-rolling from my daughters, we have Classical Music Sundays where we only listen to classical on WXXI-FM 91.5. After all, you can only listen to so much One Direction and Justin Timberlake!

Q: What would you like the WXXI audience to know about ESL? CONGRATS TO WXXI NEWS and the innovation trail WXXI News and the Innovation Trail received three 1st place awards from the New York State Associated Press Broadcasters Association last month. The 1st place awards included one for ‘Best Feature,’ won by the WXXI Newsroom for a series called “50 Years Later, Rochester Remembers the Dream.” Beth Adams, Carlet Cleare, Kate O’Connell, Jeanne Fisher, and Hélène Biandudi Hofer all contributed to that series.

The Innovation Trail, a collaboration of five upstate New York public media outlets led by WXXI, won a 1st place award for ‘Best News Series’ on the “Economics of Refugees in Upstate New York.” Contributors included Ryan Delaney, Ashley Hirtzel, and Kate O’Connell. They also brought home a 1st place award in the ‘Best News Special/Documentary’ category for “Chemical exposure at Goodyear’s Niagara Falls plant will impact workers for years to come.” The reporters on that story were Matthew Leonard and Jim Morris.

The news teams also received Special Mentions for five other news features.

A CAPITOL FOURTH

FRIDAY, JULY 4 AT 8PM AND 10:30PM ON WXXI-TV America’s favorite Independence Day celebration, hosted by Tom Bergeron (“Dancing with the Starts”) will feature unrivaled performances from some of the country’s best-known musical artists, topped off by the greatest display of fireworks anywhere in the nation. Broadcast live on PBS from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, the event will feature performances by Frankie Valli, Patti LaBelle, Jordin Sparks, Michael McDonald, Sara Evans, Kendall Schmidt and Kelli O’Hara; with the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of top pops conductor Jack Everly. MASTERPIECE MYSTERY

POV: GETTING BACK TO ABNORMAL MONDAY, JULY 14 AT 10PM ON WXXI-TV

What happens when America’s most joyous, dysfunctional city rebuilds itself after a disaster? New Orleans is the setting of Getting Back to Abnormal, a film that serves up a provocative mix of race, corruption, and politics to tell the story of the re-election campaign of Stacy Head, a white woman in a city council seat traditionally held by a black representative. Supported by her irrepressible African-American aide Barbara Lacen-Keller, Head polarizes the city as her candidacy threatens to diminish the power and influence of its black citizens. Featuring a cast of characters as colorful as the city itself, the film presents a New Orleans that outsiders rarely see.

This documentary was produced by filmmakers (pictured below) Louis Alvarez, Andrew Kolker, Paul Stekler and Peter Odabashian. Peter is a 1971 graduate of the University of Rochester.

A Humankind Special: The Right to Vote This special explores one of the most basic questions facing our democracy: who may participate? You’ll hear a fascinating history of the much-contested right to vote in America: from slaves freed after the Civil War, to women’s suffrage, to the civil rights movement. Included is the moving first-person story of a young woman who participated in the 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer project for voter registration of African Americans.

The second half presents a diversity of voices and views on today’s debates over whether voters should be required to show ID at the polls. Some Americans believe that ensures honest elections; while others see it as an unnecessary obstacle to minority voters. And we consider whether people who’ve committed felonies should be allowed to vote, after serving their time.

to this month’s Backstage Pass. duo526 was founded in 2011 by violinist Kerry DuWors and pianist Futaba Niekawa at the Eastman School of Music where they realized and developed their passion for the art of duo playing. They will be performing at Rochester’s new summer music series, Christ Church Sunset Concert Series. Also in studio will be the co-directors of the new series Emlyn Johnson and Jessica Wooldridge to talk about their upcoming concerts.

Sunset Concerts at Christ Church is a chamber music series that brings free classical music to downtown Rochester this summer.

All concerts are held Sunday evenings at 8 PM at Christ Church Rochester. The series kicked off in June but there are three more concerts left: July 13, August 3, and August 24. Before each performance, there is a reception where you can meet and mingle with the fantastic performers!

Backstage Pass is a monthly live performance program that gives listeners the backstage experience of meeting local and visiting artists. The program will repeat Sunday, July 13 at 1 p.m. on FM91.5.

The Met Opera Radio National Council Grand Finals concert, hosted by Lawrence Brownlee with guest artist Susanna Phillips, was recorded March 30th and featured winners Julie Adams (soprano from Burbank, CA), Patrick Guetti (bass from Highland Park, NJ) Ao Li (bass-baritone from Shandon, China), Yi Li (tenor from Shandon, China) and Amanda Woodbury (soprano from Crestwood, KY) The Metropolitan Opera’s National Council Auditions draws thousands of singers every year, each vying for a cash prize, a role on the Met stage and, if all goes well, a shot at opera’s big time. The Auditions start with a pool of nearly 1,500 young singers who compete in auditions throughout North America. That pool was eventually narrowed down to eight singers for the Finals Concert, each of whom would sing two arias each with the Met orchestra, conducted

by Marco Armiliato. Five prizes of $15,000 each were at stake; the remaining National Finalists receiving $5,000 to further assist in their careers.

According to Fed Up, everything we’ve been told about food and exercise for the past 30 years is wrong. From Katie Couric, Laurie David (Oscar winning producer of An Inconvenient Truth) and director Stephanie Soechtig, this new documentary may change the way you eat forever, and it’s coming to The Little on Friday, July 18 at 7:00 p.m.

We’re constantly hearing about the obesity epidemic in the U.S. An estimated 93 million Americans are affected by obesity. Ninety-eight percent of food related ads that children view are for products high in fat, sugar, and sodium. More than 9 million adolescents are considered overweight. But we’re also told that this is mostly a failure of will power – that it’s our fault. Fed Up says this is false, and that if something doesn’t change, our children will live shorter lives than us, and that in 20 years, 95 percent of Americans will be overweight or obese.

So, what’s the real problem? Sugar. Well, sugar and the way it’s spread to consumers.

THE FILM THE FOOD INDUSTRY DOESN’T WANT YOU TO SEE

This film digs into the problem of sugar, the roles of business and government in the obesity epidemic, and what will happen if things don’t change. With hard-hitting interviews, incredible new information and excellent filmmaking, Fed Up may make you think twice about how you look at food and obesity in America.

Fed Up is part of The Little’s One Take: Stories Through the Lens documentary series and will screen on Friday, July 18 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets will be $8. See thelittle.org for more information.

NT LIVE: A SMALL FAMILY BUSINESS

The next offering from National Theatre Live at The Little will be a riotous exposure of entrepreneurial greed by Olivier Award-winning playwright Alan Ayckbourn. A Small Family Business returns to the National Theatre for the first time since its celebrated premiere in 1987, when it won the Evening Standard Award for Best Play.

Jack McCracken is a man of principle in a corrupt world. But not for long. Moments after taking over his father-in-law’s business, he’s approached by a private detective armed with some compromising information. Jack’s integrity starts to fade as he discovers his extended family to be thieves and adulterers. Rampant self-interest takes over and comic hysteria builds to a macabre climax.

For those not familiar with NT Live, it’s really something to see. Actual theatre performances with the best actors and directors in London are recorded as live with cameras carefully positioned throughout the auditorium, ensuring that Little audiences get the best seat in the house for each production. Where these cameras are placed varies for each show, to make sure audiences enjoy the best possible experience every time.

Tickets for the show are $15 for Little members, students and seniors and $20 for general public.

BRASSLANDS A tiny Serbian village explodes with brass cacophony and riotous celebration as more than half a million music fans descend upon Guca, the world’s largest trumpet competition.

On July 11, 12 and 13, The Little will host three screenings of Brasslands, a music documentary offering an intimate and sometimes unsettling portrait of how the hopes and fears of this diverse group of characters collide in their search for common ground.

Showtimes will be posted on thelittle.org as the dates draw closer, but there will be at least one matinee as well as evening screenings.

Every competitor at Guca seeks to win, but the film’s characters are all making their trumpet pilgrimages for very different reasons: 25-year-old “master trumpeter” Dejan Petrovic—the reigning Guca champion— ´ returns to defend his championship title, while Demiran Cerimovi´ c—a world-class Roma Gypsy trumpeter—struggles against deeply ingrained racism for the opportunity to make money for his family.

Through it all, a fish-out-of-water American band plays to validate their very existence in front of a population still scarred by U.S. bombs.

Docents provide valuable service to WXXI and the community by volunteering their time to lead tours for children and adults.
