BEING POIROT
“ Hercule Poirot is for me, much more than the character on the written page. Hercule Poirot for me almost is a real person. He is the person who was responsible for my life for twenty-five years. I’ve got to know him, I’ve lived him, he’s my invisible closest and best friend.” —DAVID SUCHET After two decades playing one of television’s greatest icons, David Suchet goes on a journey to unravel the greatest mystery of all – the story behind Hercule Poirot himself. David travels to Belgium as he attempts to unlock the mystery behind the great detective, discovers what the Belgians think about one of their most famous sons and allows our camera to film behind the scenes on the last days of filming.

DEAR FRIENDS, You are probably well aware of AM 1370’s 30th anniversary this year, as well as Classical 91.5’s 40th – but The Little Theatre also celebrates a big anniversary as Rochester’s beloved East Ave Norm Silverstein fixture turns 85! This is truly a historic celebration, and this month we gear up the festivities with a six-day Decades Film Series. From August 8-13 we will screen a film each night from each decade that The Little has been with us. I hope you’ll have a chance to catch one or all of these great films – selected by you! To give you a short history on the oldest, continuously running art house in the country, The Little opened in 1929 as part of a national theater trend in the U.S. called the “little cinema movement” which was dedicated to showing films that “appeal to the intellect.” The Little has always stayed true to that mission and continues to serve audiences with educational and culturally unique film presentations – often with discussions immediately after the screenings. We’re proud of The Little’s role in film history and the birth of art house cinema as we know it today. Did you know that the very first film shown at The Little was Cyrano de Bergerac? It was accompanied by a three-man orchestra seated in the upper balcony. We’ll be bringing that silent film back to The Little for a special anniversary screening this fall. And, like in 1929, the film will be accompanied by an orchestra – Rochester’s contemporary chamber group, The Andrew Alden Ensemble. To read more about The Little’s celebration plans check The Little page in this program guide. I’d also like to share with you a new project that WXXI and the Innovation Trail are spearheading called “Understanding the Affordable Care Act.” This on-going news series will help answer the community’s questions about Obamacare. If you have questions, concerns, or have had trouble enrolling in health insurance, I invite you to take our online survey at WXXI.org. Please encourage your friends and family to take the survey, as well. We’re looking to get as much feedback as possible so that we are able provide relevant information to our community. Finally, if you made a pledge during our one-day radio drive on June 30, helping us end our fiscal year strong, I thank you. Your generous support enables us to provide the programs and services so many in our community need and value. And I’m certain you will find us worthy of that support for decades to come. Best Regards,
Norm Silverstein, WXXI President norms@wxxi.org @normWXXI

Q&A WITH A WXXI UNDERWRITER
CLINT FERREL (LEFT) AND PAUL FERREL
FERREL’S GARAGE, INC. is a family-owned and -operated automotive repair facility that has been proudly serving the Rochester community for more than 30 years. The garage, located on University Avenue, services and repairs all makes and models from antiques and classics to contemporary. Paul and Clint Ferrel teamed up to reveal some insider secrets about the business. What is the strangest repair you’ve ever done? We once removed a squirrel from underneath the windshield cowling that had died and decomposed there. The customer’s complaint was a noticeable foul odor for a month. What is your dream car, and what do you actually drive – and does it have a name? There is one car that has stayed in the family for over 30 years now. Paul restored a 1956 Chevy Nomad that is two-tone blue. Her name is Sally. “She” still takes us for Sunday drives to car shows and around the Finger Lakes. What is the oldest car Ferrel’s has ever worked on? We once had a beautiful 1920s Ford Model A convertible that needed a rear main seal replaced. What’s the highest mileage you’ve ever seen on a vehicle? A 1995 Toyota Camry came in with 456,000 miles on the original engine and transmission. It also had never been in an accident! Why do you feel Ferrel’s is a valuable asset to the Rochester area? Not only does Ferrel’s fix cars, but we also support the local arts, WXXI, and various youth groups/leagues. What has been the most important business practice for Ferrel’s Garage? The most important business practice - Honest and Upfront! If you are most proud of providing underwriting support for a specific type of WXXI programming, what would it be? Car Talk!!!! (WXXI-AM 1370, Saturdays at 10 am, Sundays at 11 am). It’s fun, entertaining, and you learn about cars — which is important. Any other WXXI favorites? Antiques Roadshow, American Masters, History Detectives, NOVA, and American Experience. www.ferrelsgarage.com To learn more about underwriting on WXXI, contact underwriting@wxxi.org
WXXI TO CREATE A iTUNES RADIO SINGLE MULTI-MEDIA NEWSROOM NOW AVAILABLE ON
Did you know you can now listen to your favorite NPR stations on iTunes Radio? WXXI is one of the first 42 public radio stations across the country to roll out its own channels – AM 1370 (Rochester), WRUR-FM 88.5 (Rochester) and WEOS-FM 98.5 (Geneva) – within the Apple streaming service. To use iTunes Radio, you must have iOS 7 or OS X Lion v10.7 or later, iTunes 11.1, or Apple TV 6.0 or later installed on your mobile device or computer, as well as an Apple ID for use in the iTunes Store. To find WXXI’s streams on iTunes Radio, just launch the Music Player app on your iPhone, iPad or Mac, tap the Radio tab and search for WXXI, WRUR or WEOS, and “add” that station to your personal “My Stations” list. For more information and tips on how to access this new service, visit: http://wxxi.org/itunes-radio.
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting has awarded WXXI, along with principal partner stations WSKG Binghamton, WRVO Oswego/Syracuse, and WMHT Schenectady/Albany and associate partner station WBFO Buffalo, a two-year, $375,000 grant that will allow the five stations to create a single multi-media regional newsroom, which will be known as UPSTATE INSIGHT.
When complete, Upstate Insight will be an innovative model for covering news across a large geographic area. Through increased collaboration on enterprise reporting, an emphasis on multi-reporter stories and coordinated deployment of reporters around significant stories, Upstate Insight will be able to provide more comprehensive coverage to their communities. The five stations will develop news data capability and adopt content sharing and communications systems to support connectivity between organizations. “Upstate Insight is a new and innovative model for covering regional news,” explains WXXI President Norm Silverstein. “It is part of an on-going effort in public media to improve newsrooms, encourage sustainability, and support the production of stories that inform and engage our communities.” Upstate Insight will incorporate stories from the Innovation Trail Local Journalism Center, as well as resources in the Southern Tier, Central and Western New York and the Capitol District, including the Capitol Bureau in Albany, NY. WXXI’s Matthew Leonard will serve as executive editor of the project and will coordinate – in collaboration with reporters and news directors at each station– the production of news stories that focus on issues relevant to Upstate New Yorkers, including education, health, energy and the environment.

Garth Fagan, founder and artistic director of Garth Fagan Dance, joins WXXI President Norm Silverstein for an episode of Norm & Company, a monthly series where long-time Rochesterians recount fascinating stories about their lives in our community. AMERICAN MASTERS –
DOROTHEA LANGE:
GRAB A HUNK OF LIGHTNING FRIDAY, AUGUST 29 AT 9PM ON WXXI-TV Her celebrated photograph Migrant Mother is one of the most recognized and arresting images in the world, a haunting portrait that came to represent the suffering of America’s Great Depression. Yet few know the story, struggles and profound body of work of the woman who created the portrait: Dorothea Lange (May 26, 1895 October 11, 1965). American Masters — Dorothea Lange: Grab a Hunk of Lightning explores the life, passions and uncompromising vision of the influential photographer, whose enduring images document five turbulent decades of American history, including the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl and World War II Japanese internment camps. Peabody and five-time Emmy awardwinning cinematographer Dyanna Taylor — the granddaughter of Lange and writer/ social scientist Paul Schuster Taylor — directs and narrates this intimate American Masters documentary.
TVHIGHLIGHTS
THE BEST
The Best of Men is the gripping story of Dr. Ludwig Guttman’s transformative care of paraplegics. Toward the end of the World War II, Dr. Guttmann, a Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany, arrived at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in England and changed the lives of his paralyzed soldiers and skeptical staff using wheel-chair based sports. Through sports, the soldiers who were suffering from institutionalized neglect learned to live more fulfilling lives, build physical strength and gain self-respect. Dr. Guttmann, an unsung hero, helped start the Paralympic Games. In 1966, the long-time British citizen was deservedly knighted for his part in bringing hope to the hopeless. The Best of Men airs Sunday, August 17 at 9 p.m. on WXXI-TV.

STUDIO 360 LOOKS AT 1914
AMERICAN ICONS: NATIVE SON
In 1914, new characters and new technologies came together in what we might call the birth of modern century pop culture. Film, theater, fiction, and music were being transformed at the beginning of the 20th century. This program was written and sound-designed like a radio program of the era - as though Studio 360 itself were 100 years old, reporting on new cultural developments taking place in that moment.
Richard Wright set out to confront white readers with the most brutal consequences of racism, and finally lay to rest the stereotype of the passive Uncle Tom. But some think Native Son exploited the worst stereotypes of black youth. This episode traces the line from Bigger Thomas to Notorious B.I.G., and visits a high school drama class acting out Native Son, and struggling to grasp the racism their grandparents experienced.

AMERICAN ICONS: THE VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL AIRS SUNDAY, AUGUST 24 AT 9PM
How do you build a monument to a war that was more tragic than triumphant? Maya Lin was practically a kid when she got the commission to design the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the National Mall. American Icons visit a replica of the wall that travels to veterans’ parades around the country, and hear from Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel how this singular work of architecture has influenced how we think about war.
AMERICAN ICONS: THE DISNEY PARKS
AIRS SUNDAY, AUGUST 24 AT 9PM Generations of Americans have grown up with Walt Disney shaping our imaginations. Futurist Cory Doctorow explains the genius of Disney World, while novelist Carl Hiaasen even hates the water there. Host Kurt Anderson tours Disneyland with a second-generation “imagineer” whose dead mother haunts the Haunted Mansion.

AMERICAN ROUTES
SATURDAYS AT 6PM
American Routes is a weekly two-hour public radio program produced in New Orleans, presenting a broad range of American music — blues and jazz, gospel and soul, old-time country and rockabilly, Cajun and zydeco, Tejano and Latin, roots rock and pop, avant-garde and classical. Now in their 15th year on the air, American Routes explores the shared musical and cultural threads in these American styles and genres of music — and how they are distinguished. The program also presents documentary features and artist interviews. The songs and stories on American Routes describe both the community origins of our music, musicians and cultures — the “roots”— and the many directions they take over time — the “routes.”
Charlie has been soloist with a variety of orchestras around the world, including Chicago, New York, and Shanghai. Medalist at Tchaikovsky and Brussels, his performance of the Jongen Concerto is included in a CD set of the 17 best prize-winning performances of the Brussels competition’s 50-year history. Professor of Violin at The Eastman School of Music, Charlie has conducted master-classes at universities all over the world and over 50 U.S. Universities. He is founder/director of The Castleman Quartet Program, an intensive and extensive workshop in solo and chamber performance.

THE 85 YEARS OF FILM SERIES In autumn of 1929, a modest movie cinema opened its doors on East Avenue. At that time, George Eastman lived a few blocks away and Herbert Hoover lived in the White House as president. Red Wing Stadium had been open for about five months and Prohibition was still in effect. Eighty-five years later, we’re still here, we’re still growing, and we’re ready to celebrate. After giving it some thought, we decided a great way to celebrate 85 years of independent film was to have a six-day event during which we screen a film from every decade The Little’s been around. Earlier this year, we polled patrons online and on paper about what movies they would like to see. They spoke out, and we will deliver this month. We are still nailing down the rights to show some of the winners, but we promise it’s going to be a fantastic series with screenings ranging from The Graduate to Brazil.
Don’t miss the celebration – Friday, August 8 to Wednesday, August 13. We will be screening a film from every full decade of our history – from the 1930s to the early 2000s. Other 85th anniversary celebrations to look out for include a rescreening of our first film ever – the silent film Cyrano de Bergerac – which we’ve had completely rescored by The Andrew Alden Ensemble. They will be on hand to accompany, of course. We also collected over 30 stories from you, our public, ranging from the 1930s to present day. We have heard from those who have read the stories already that they were in tears by the end. So keep an eye on thelittle.org for updates!
IVORY TOWER:
Every year, urban, suburban and rural teen filmmakers from across the Rochester area and even, this year, as far away as Spain, have their work showcased on our screens.
IS COLLEGE WORTH IT?
As tuition rates spiral beyond reach and student loan debt passes $1 trillion (more than credit card debt), this film asks: Is college worth the cost? On Tuesday, August 12 at 7:00 p.m., The Little’s documentary series One Take: Stories Through the Lens presents Ivory Tower. From the halls of Harvard to public colleges in financial crisis to Silicon Valley, filmmaker Andrew Rossi (Page One: Inside The New York Times) assembles an urgent portrait of a great American institution at the breaking point. Through profiles at Arizona State, Cooper Union, and San Jose State—among several others—Ivory Tower reveals how colleges in the United States, long regarded as leaders in higher education, came to embrace a business model that often promotes expansion over quality learning. But along the way we also find unique programs, from Stanford to the free desert school Deep Springs to the historically black all women’s college Spelman, where the potential for life-changing college experiences endure. Ultimately, Ivory Tower asks, “What price will society pay if higher education cannot revolutionize college as we know it and evolve a sustainable economic model?” After the screening, director Andrew Rossi will Skype in for a discussion with the audience!
On Wednesday, August 6, The Little is proud to host the Rochester Teen Film Festival.
The Rochester Teen Film Festival is an annual celebration of young filmmakers brought to you by Nazareth College, WXXI, and the Little Theatre. The purpose of the festival is to honor the work of teen filmmakers and give young people an authentic opportunity to participate in a real film festival. This year, among other awards, one teen will win the Philip Seymour Hoffman Best of the Festival Award, which was funded by The Little’s Philip Seymour Hoffman Film Series earlier this year. Come cheer on the best burgeoning filmmakers in Rochester!
