September was a busy month at the station. Our Open House was a great success with more than 2,000 guests joining us for a fun filled day of activities, tours, and giveaways. If you were one of the 2,000 that joined us that Saturday, I hope you enjoyed yourself and walked away with a new appreciation for your public broadcasting station. September also marked the premiere of our newest documentary, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Boynton House: The Next Hundred Years. We received many accolades for the program and are honored to have been able to share with our community the story behind renovating this Rochester treasure. I expect October to be just as eventful. With the election season upon us, WXXI News promises to bring you civil discourse and balanced information about the races that are most relevant to you. From our Capitol Bureau Correspondent Karen Dewitt reporting from the state capital to Bob Smith’s insightful interviews with a variety of political candidates on 1370 Connection, from local coverage of the races on Morning Edition to our Voice of the Voter debate between Congresswoman Louise Slaughter and County Executive Maggie Brooks on Friday, October 19 at 8 p.m., WXXI is the place to turn for the most comprehensive information this election season. I encourage you to visit WXXI’s Election page at WXXI.org/ election. There you’ll find details on all of this, plus descriptions of offices up for election, corresponding lists of candidates, and links to Candidate Free Air Time videos, a free service WXXI offers candidates to deliver their messages directly to voters. I’m also looking forward to November when we bring NPR’s Diane Rehm to Rochester! On Friday, November 16, WXXI will host a special luncheon with her at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. Those who attended our last event with Diane will attest, it’s not to be missed! To order your tickets, visit WXXI.org/diane or call (585) 258-0200.
Sincerely,
Norm Silverstein, WXXI President & CEO norms@wxxi.org

Downton Abbey as goes janesville Season 3 is Just Three Months Away!
Monday October 29 at 7 p.m. at the little theatre
Fans of the acclaimed PBS MASTERPIECE series Downton Abbey can begin their countdown for the highly anticipated Season 3, premiering January 6, 2013 on WXXI-TV/HD. With the Great War over, Downton Abbey awaits an exciting engagement. However, not all is tranquil as social changes, romantic intrigues, and personal crises affect the inhabitants of the majestic English country estate. New World riches and Old World tradition square off, new families and marriages emerge, and Downton Abbey fights to maintain its presence in a new post-World War I England. This season, Academy Award-winner Shirley MacLaine joins the cast of Dame Maggie Smith, Elizabeth McGovern, Hugh Bonneville, Dan Stevens, and more. Check out the trailer for Season 3 at: www.pbs.org/ wgbh/masterpiece/ downtonabbey/
This month’s Community Cinema film explores how America’s middle class is dwindling, and the debate over how to save it is nowhere fiercer than in the normally tranquil state of Wisconsin. Filmmaker Brad Lichtenstein’s As Goes Janesville catapults viewers to the front lines of America’s debate over the future of its middle class – a debate that has become a pitched battle over unions in the normally tranquil state of Wisconsin. First, General Motors shuts down Janesville’s century-old plant, causing mass layoffs and residents exiled in search of work. Then newly elected governor Scott Walker ignites a firestorm by introducing a bill to end collective bargaining, unleashing a fury of protest and sparking a recall election. Spend three years in the lives of laid-off workers trying to reinvent themselves; business leaders aligned with the governor to promote a pro-business agenda that they believe will woo new companies to town; and a state senator caught in the middle, trying to bring peace to his warring state and protect workers’ rights. As goes Janesville, so goes America, a polarized nation losing its grasp on the American Dream.

Ellen DeGeneres: The Mark Twain Prize
This four-part series showcases Latino artists, athletes, and performers who reflect their culture while defying all expectations. From the housing projects of Brooklyn to a Mexican wrestling ring, from the ranches of California to the crumbling beauty of Castro’s Cuba, the programs shine a light on the unexpected. VOCES ON PBS is the only national television series devoted to exploring and celebrating the rich diversity of the Latino cultural experience.
Celebrate the work of Ellen DeGeneres! The beloved television icon and entertainment pioneer is the 15th recipient of The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. The prize was created in 1998 by The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Mark Krantz, Peter Kaminsky and Bob Kaminsky, and Cappy McGarr to recognize the art of humorists who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th century novelist and essayist best known as Mark Twain.

Salena’s Mexican Restaurant 302 N.Goodman St, At the Village Gate Rochester, New York 14607 tel. 585.256.5980
Since 1998 the Rochester area has had the pleasure of dining on a mix of traditional authentic Mexican cuisine as well as more modernized fare at Salena’s Mexican Restaurant in the Village Gate. “We make the great majority of our food from scratch and do our best to provide consistent delicious fare,” says Aaron Metras, Owner. “We are one of the few independent restaurants that offers health care benefits to our employees and will soon be rolling out retirement plan benefits. We hope this encourages our staff to take pride in and care of our restaurant.” According to Metras, the decision to become a WXXI corporate supporter was an easy one. “We are long-time supporters of NPR and WXXI. We hold the WXXI audience in high regard and feel they are well-informed consumers. We are also aware this is a demographic that is likely to go out and support local establishments.” When asked about any differences in underwriting on WXXI versus traditional advertising, Metras added, “Currently, WXXI is the only radio media we support. We believe WXXI listeners pay attention to who’s supporting the station. We have had several customers come in and tell us they came to Salena’s because they discovered we support WXXI.” Metras is a fan of All Things Considered, Talk of the Nation, The Diane Rehm Show and Wait! Wait! Don’t Tell Me! on WXXI AM 1370, as well as locally-produced Stage Notes hosted by Robert Hammond on WXXI FM 91.5.

1370 Connection Forums & AM 1370 Specials BURN: The Power of One airs Sunday, October 7 at 9 p.m. The upcoming November general election is about power — the power to shape the nation’s priorities domestic and foreign, the power to lead, to legislate, to govern. Host Alex Chadwick, explores offshore drilling in the Arctic; follows a ballot initiative in Michigan; and hears the story of the now defunct White House Office on Energy and Climate.
Intelligence Squared “Are Elected Islamists Better than Dictators?” airs Sunday, October 21 at 9 p.m. The popular uprisings of the Arab Spring have left a leadership void that Islamist parties have been quick to fill. Will elected Islamist majorities bring radicalization and sectarian violence to the region? Or will the spread of democratic values bring about a more liberalized Arab world?
Intelligence Squared “Two Cheers for Super PACs: Is Money in Politics Still Overregulated?” airs Sunday, October 14 at 9 p.m. With the product of two court decisions, Citizens United and SpeechNow.org v. FEC, Super PAC spending is on course to making 2012 the most expensive presidential election in history. How have Super PACs changed the political landscape and are they good for democracy?
Intelligence Squared “Should End-of-Care be Rationed?” airs Sunday, October 28 at 9 p.m. Just because we can extend life, should we? If health care is a scarce resource, limited by its availability and our ability to pay for it, should government step in to ration care? In other words, how much is an extra month of life worth?

Thomas Hampson Host
This weekly radio series reveals American classic song – poetry set to music by American composers – as a vibrant diary of the American experience. Each hour-long program focuses on a particular topic that sheds light on a larger theme in American history, and includes approximately 40 minutes of songs drawn from archival and modern recordings. Host Thomas Hampson also provides stories and insights about the people and events that inspired those songs. Several programs also feature interviews with experts from related fields.
I’m Thinking of an Animal with Billy Kelly WXXI is pleased to present “I’m Thinking of an Animal with Billy Kelly” video segments. Billy Kelly is a singer and songwriter who conceptualized a series of playful oneminute segments for children. Borrowing from the popular car-ride kids’ game of the same name, Billy Kelly sings clues about an animal he is thinking of, then supports his clues with animation and performances by a professional dance troupe. Before releasing them on air, we have posted them online and have invited people to share their opinions of them. To view them and share your opinion, visit WXXI.org/ events and under “Ongoing Events” click I’m Thinking of an Animal with Billy Kelly.
OCTOBER 7 | Song of Walt Whitman Whitman, the “Bard of Democracy,” was the founder of a new American language. With music built deep into his poetry it’s no surprise that Whitman has been a beacon for American composers.
Walt Whitman October 7
OCTOBER 14 | Many Are the Voices Many Americans have had to raise their voices to be recognized or even heard in America. In this program, we hear songs of African Americans and Native Americans; women, immigrants, and war resisters; and voices from the labor movement and the gay rights movement.
OCTOBER 21 | War Cries Throughout our history, America has gone to war with bravado and with anguish. Songs have helped shape those emotions, and express them-inspiring us to battle, sustaining our courage, giving us a way to lament our losses.
OCTOBER 28 | Ives the Chronicler Charles Ives was unprecedented at suiting his musical style to the story he wanted to tell, and he created dozens of surprising “snapshots in song” of what it was like to be alive in America during his lifetime.

October 24, 7 PM & October 27, matinee
Join us for a worldwide short film festival where you can vote for the winners! Countries represented this year include Norway, The Netherlands, Russia, England, Ireland, Peru, France, Romania, Spain and the USA, in what festival organizers describe as the “United Nations of Film Festivals.” In one week, over 100,000 people from all over the world, to over 150 cinemas in 47 U.S. states will come together to view and vote on these 10 films. When you enter the Little Theatre you’ll be handed a voting card and asked to vote for the one film you feel should win. Project 5’s screening of V/H/S
Saturday, October 13, 7 PM
Project 5, the independent film series featured in Theatre 5 of the Little, presents the horror film V/H/S on Saturday, October 13 at 7:00 PM. A VHS trade event, where guests can trade old school VHS tapes, will follow immediately after the screening. Prepare to shake, squeal, and squirm as you watch six short stories intersect with a main theme of found footage. Found footage, a genre of film that presents footage as discovered or left by dead or missing protagonists, has been popularized in horror film culture by films such as The Blair Witch Project (1999), Paranormal Activity (2007), and Cloverfield (2008). In V/H/S, directors Adam Wingard, David Bruckner, Ti West, Glenn McQuaid, Joe Swanberg, and directing quarter Radio Silence craft a terrifying narrative where a group of misfits break into an abandoned house to retrieve a videotape, and find more found footage than they bargained for. The Little’s Project 5 is an “all-encompassing” term for events in Theatre 5. We will strive to bring independent cinema to the theatre that would otherwise not be seen in the Rochester area. Films with limited or no distribution and series devoted to the independent spirit will be showcased with unique monthly/ weekly series and special events. We will do rotating showings of these films and also “one-night-only” events. Project 5 will also embody the spirit of collaboration as we reach out to local colleges, art galleries, film festivals, and non-profits to foster programming that engages the Rochester community at new levels.
