PUBLIC TELEVISION & PUBLIC RADIO FOR ROCHESTER

S E P T E M B E R 2 010

Benches on Parade

WXXI’s latest production, Benches on Parade, captures the spirit of Rochester’s most recent community arts project that features 200 benches decorated by local artists. Showcased in the area’s largest art gallery, the streets of Rochester, these pieces of public art celebrate our rich artistic community. From the inception of the project, WXXI has been there - camera in hand - to document the work of more than 16 artists. Benches on Parade offers a glimpse into the production of creating these public works of art, and shares the community’s reaction to the pieces. The Benches on Parade Community Arts Project is presented by Dixon Schwabl and Nazareth College. Benches on Parade premieres on Wednesday, September 8th at 8:00 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD

Stay tuned for Horses on Parade immediately following the Benches on Parade broadcast. Produced by WXXI in 2001, the program captures the story of the first community arts project hosted in Rochester

Most of us who earn a living have at one time or another have been fired, let go, downsized, outsourced, canned. Just ask actress and commentator Annabelle Gurwitch (pictured). Shortly after landing a part in a play directed by her idol, Woody Allen, she was fired because of so-called “creative differences” between her and the director. Gurwitch channeled her disbelief and bitterness into something more constructive, creating the show you’re about to hear. She began calling up her friends and colleagues, and found that everyo ne had a compelling and often hilarious story to tell. LA Theatre Works’ Fired: Tales of Jobs Gone Bad airs Sunday, September 5 at 10 p.m. on AM 1370/FM-HD91.5-2

If you’re in the Ithaca area this fall, be sure to tune in to our new station in that region, WITH 90.1, for great music and many of your favorite WRUR shows. To find out more, visit: WITHRADIO.org

1370 Forum & AM 1370 Specials America Abroad: Arab Youth in Today’s Economy airs Sunday, September 12 at 10 p.m. Young Arabs today are graduating from college with a coins-toss chance of landing a job. Frustrated twenty-somethings are under educated, under employed, and under paid. We’ll hear how economic malaise in the United Arab Emirates and Syria shrinks expectations as well as pocketbooks. And we’ll crash a Moroccan wedding to ask shortchanged youth about the extended “waithood” period that now precedes marriage. American RadioWorks: The Great Textbook Wars airs Sunday, September 19 at 10 p.m. In the 1970s, the battle for the hearts and minds of America’s schoolchildren erupted in violence. School buildings in West Virginia were hit by dynamite and Molotov cocktails, buses were riddled with bullets, and surrounding coal mines were shut down by protesting miners. The flashpoint for the explosion was a new set of textbooks. Some

parents said the schoolbooks undermined their values. This documentary tells the story of an early skirmish in America’s culture wars, and examines the divide that persists today over what to teach children in schools. American RadioWorks – War on Poverty: From the Great Society to the Great Recession airs Sunday, September 26 at 10 p.m. President Lyndon B. Johnson declared a war on poverty in 1964. He believed a mighty nation could eliminate want. After all, America had won World War II and was enjoying spectacular prosperity. Almost five decades later, the poverty rate is lower, but the war is far from won. In the wake of the Great Recession, a new generation of Americans is struggling with economic deprivation. “War on Poverty” will blend contemporary storytelling with rich archival audio to examine the modern face of poverty, and to ask why LBJ’s dream of a Great Society is still beyond reach.
