DEAR FRIEND, We recently had the pleasure of hosting in Rochester PBS Nature executive producer Fred Kaufman and Emmy award-winning filmmaker Ann Johnson Prum for a visit in anticipation of their three-part series Nature: Norm Silverstein America Spring LIVE, which premieres at the end of this month. They joined Evan Dawson on Connections, attended a reception at The Strong Museum of Play, and hosted a special screening and discussion at the Little Theatre. Grants from the National Science Foundation and Ann Ray Foundation, as well as local support from our friends at Cobblestone Capital Advisors, made these March events possible and will continue this month with a Family Fishing event at Powder Mills Park on April 13, WXXI Kids’ Nature Fest at Seneca Park on April 27, and a digital Nature Challenge. To learn more about these events and other activities and how you can take part, please visit WXXI.org/citizenscience. I recently returned from my annual trip to Washington, DC for the Public Media Summit. Along with WXXI Board Chair Dr. Cynthia ReddeckLiDestriI and WXXI Trustee Betsy Wilson, we joined our colleagues from PBS stations across the country to advocate on behalf of public media. Our goal was to remind policymakers about the important work public media does in our communities and to remind Congress that PBS is rated #1 in public trust among nationally known institutions. Federal funding for public media is only a small piece of the final federal budget, less than 0.01%, but without it, WXXI and PBS stations across the country would not be able to provide viewers like you the same high quality programs and services that we do today. We had a very favorable reception from our local Representatives from both sides of the aisle, but we still need your help (especially since the President’s budget is expected to again try to zero-out our federal funding). You can participate in this effort by sharing why public media is important to you. Please visit Protect My Public Media’s website at: protectmypublicmedia.org and submit your own testimonial. Your support – through advocacy and membership – enables us to educate, inspire, and engage our community through in-depth news reporting, meaningful educational services, and quality programming. That includes local productions that spotlight people and places in our region. That’s why I’m so proud to share the news that Opioids from Inside, a documentary that WXXI served as co-producer on, has been nominated for four New York Emmy Awards and Turn the Page, Election Day, and Brewed in New York, of which WXXI served as the presenting station, have received a total of nine nominations. Altogether, WXXI and our local partners received 13 New York Emmy nominations. That’s something to be excited about! As we’ve said many times, thanks for your support, which makes it all possible. Happy Spring!

NEWS&EVENTS

Q&A with a WXXI CORPORATE SPONSOR With 15 years of industry experience, Jack McGowan in 2004 opened TWO POINT CAPITAL MANAGEMENT, an investment management firm using a proprietary discipline to give clients confidence that their investments will work across good times, and bad. Jack says, “Our tagline, ‘Live a Richer Life,’ reflects our wishes for our clients, our community, and our own team to appreciate and embrace a life of purpose, passion, and joy.” WXXI sits down with Jack to learn more about trends in investing.

Q. What’s the Two Point Investment Approach? We assess companies’ long-term performance over two dimensions (Quality+Value™), construct portfolios of individual stocks and bonds tailored to the risk-and return preferences of each client, and proactively manage those portfolios.

Q. Thoughts on cryptocurrency? The rate at which hundreds of millions of dollars of cryptocurrency is vanishing, “lost,” or stolen indicates that the underlying blockchain technology—though powerful—isn’t yet suitable as the basis for a currency.

Q. How is artificial intelligence (AI) impacting private wealth management? Some firms are using it, but AI in its current state cannot perform the complicated reasoning that sophisticated securities investors bring to bear.

Q. What are the most noticeable shift in trends related to retirement goal priorities? People are more focused on leading active lives, and pursuing new interests.

Q. Tips on successful charitable planning? Due diligence based on what matters to you is key—start with an issue dear to your heart, and let your passion guide your research into relevant organizations. Consider volunteering or serving first. Review your investments and finances before any measurable increase in giving. Remember, gifting appreciated stock can help you give and save on taxes at the same time. https://TwoPointCapital.com JACK MCGOWAN FOUNDER

LILLIAN JOHNSON WINS THE GENEVA ON THE LAKE GETAWAY! 4

In February during our winter radio drive we hosted a drawing for a two-night stay at Geneva on the Lake. Long-time member Lillian Johnson won that special getaway, and sent us this kind note of thanks. Congratulations Lillian!

LES MISÉRABLES ON MASTERPIECE SUNDAYS AT 9 P.M., APRIL 14-MAY 19 ON WXXI-TV

Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables masterpiece comes to television in a six-part drama adaptation by multi award-winning screenwriter Andrew Davies. It stars Dominic West (The Affair, The Hour) as Jean Valjean, and David Oyelowo (Selma) as Javert in this landmark drama adaptation. They are joined in this epic event drama by Lily Collins (Rules Don’t Apply, Love, Rosie), in the role of Fantine. With a striking intensity and relevance to us today, Victor Hugo’s novel is testimony to the struggles of France’s underclass and how far they must go to survive. The six-part television adaptation of the renowned book will vividly and faithfully bring to life the vibrant and engaging characters, the spectacular and authentic imagery and, above all, the incredible yet accessible story that was Hugo’s lifework.

AMERICAN MASTERS:

STREIT’S

MATZO and THE AMERICAN DREAM MONDAY, APRIL 22 AT 9 P.M. ON WXXI-TV

Matzo is a staple and hallmark of Jewish cuisine and culture. This documentary spotlights the iconic Streit’s factory in New York City, a fifth-generation family business that resiliently stays true to tradition, churning water into flour using ovens as old as the factory itself.

Discover the man behind the award. A journalist who became a media mogul with an outspoken, cantankerous editorial voice and two bestselling newspapers, Joseph Pulitzer championed what he regarded as the sacred role of the free press in a democracy. CREDIT: COURTESY OF GETTY IMAGES

The history of business and entrepreneurship lies at the heart of the American story, but often absent from that narrative are the experiences of African Americans. From the country’s earliest days, African Americans have embodied the qualities of innovation, risk-taking and determination to forge a path toward a better life. Boss: The Black Experience in Business, by Peabody and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson, traces the lives of African American entrepreneurs over 150 years, from those bound by bondage to moguls at the top of million-dollar empires.

FOR A LONG LIFE

TUESDAY, APRIL 30 AT 9 P.M. ON WXXI-WORLD

care is rarely associated with singing and laughter, but at Strathcarron it’s different. At this remarkable Scottish hospice center, patients face pain, uncertainty and the possibility of life’s end with song and humor. Four years in the making, this film includes a hit parade of tunes belted out by patients and caregivers alike between reflections on life, love and mortality. Sinatra and R.E.M. have never been sung with more heart.
