DEAR FRIEND, During the current emergency brought on by COVID-19, WXXI will do everything possible to keep our community informed with the latest official information. This is an important time for all of us to be well informed. WXXI Norm Silverstein and NPR are bringing you reliable information about the Coronavirus – facts and advice from the nation’s top healthcare professionals, as well as information about schools, workplaces, and public gatherings and events in our community. You depend on reliable information so you can make informed decisions for yourself and your family. You can trust WXXI News to follow this important story wherever it takes us, for however long it takes. It goes without saying that we will do everything within our means to ensure the safety of our staff members at WXXI, The Little (which we have closed) and CITY Newspaper – and we will do everything in our power to make sure that you have the best information to help guard your own health and safety. Even at the time of writing this, the news is changing by the hour, never mind the day. We believe we have an important role in keeping our community informed and will continue to provide extensive coverage on this outbreak. In addition, WXXI News has compiled a list of resources and information on the coronavirus, which you can find at WXXINews.org. In response to area school closings, WXXI-TV started broadcasting a weekday “Learn At Home” schedule in March to support of families, educators, and students. WXXI Kids 24/7 channel has remained the same with PBS KIDS favorites for our youngest viewers. WXXI’s Education team has also pulled together resources in support of this effort, which can be accessed at WXXI.org/education and on our social media channels. These resources include videos and activities for teachers and families, as well as a link to PBS LearningMedia’s free online service. Speaking of resources, we know that with school closures, work stoppages, and “social distancing” you may find you and your family spending more time at home. To help with keeping engaged and entertained during this time, WXXI has compiled a special list of “10 Fun Things To Do” that encompasses all of our services. Whether you’re a news lover, music lover, arts lover, or have kids home from school, you’ll find all sorts of ways to help fill your day. Check out WXXI’s “10 Fun Things To Do” at WXXI.org. Plus, the great programming across all of our television and radio services are here for you 24-hours a day, every day. We work hard to earn and maintain your trust 365 days a year and you can count on us to deliver factual information on the Coronavirus and other breaking and important news stories. And it’s your continued membership support that enables us to educate, inspire, and engage our community through in-depth news reporting, meaningful educational services, and quality programming. Thank you, and please stay safe! Best regards,

Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org | @normWXXI

The Hochstein School has been a center for learning music and dance in Rochester for 100 years. Hear stories and music that connect this community school to the history of our city over the past century - from its origins as a settlement school teaching music to immigrant children, through years of growth and development to suit the changing needs of Rochester’s communities, to its role today as a place to learn and experience music, dance, and more. Written in 1724, J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion is part of the German Lutheran passion-oratorio tradition. The passion narrative from the Gospel of John is recounted by the Evangelist (narrator), Jesus, Peter, Pilate and various servants. In this performance, recorded at Asbury First United Methodist Church in March 2019, Rochester’s chamber choir VOICES performs with soloists and orchestra.

GLUCK:

Mark Morris’s spirited take on the ancient Orpheus myth stars mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton as Orfeo, the grieving lover on a quest through the underworld. Soprano Hei-Kyung Hong sings the plaintive Euridice. Mark Wigglesworth conducts Gluck’s elegant score, a pinnacle of the Baroque repertoire.

16

PUCCINI:

Soprano Anna Netrebko, whom the New York Times hailed as “magnificent” when she made her role debut as Tosca in 2018, returns as Puccini’s explosive diva, back by popular demand. Tenors Najmiddin Mavlyanov and Brian Jagde alternate as the idealistic painter Cavaradossi, and baritones George Gagnidze and Michael Volle complete the opera’s fatal love triangle as the sinister Scarpia. Bertrand de Billy conducts Sir David McVicar’s stunning production.

VERDI:

Audience favorite Ailyn Pérez takes on the touching role of Amelia Grimaldi, with legendary baritone Carlos Álvarez returning to the Met for the first time in more than a decade in the title role. Elegant tenor Joseph Calleja is her lover, Gabriele Adorno, and magisterial bass Dmitry Belosselskiy completes the principal cast as Amelia’s grandfather, Jacopo Fiesco. Carlo Rizzi takes the podium for Verdi’s timeless tale of political and family intrigue.

PUCCINI: Two of opera’s most thrilling dramatic sopranos, Christine Goerke and Nina Stemme, reprise their fierce portrayals of the title princess. Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Carlo Rizzi take the podium to conduct Franco Zeffirelli’s dazzling production of Puccini’s final masterpiece, which also features tenors Yusif Eyvazov and Riccardo Massi as Calàf, sopranos Eleonora Buratto and Hibla Gerzmava as Liù, and bassbaritone James Morris as Timur.

Performed in Russian by the Moscow State Chorus and soloists and hosted by Valerie Kahler. Rachmaninov’s setting uses multiple styles of traditional chant, while demonstrating the complex use of harmony, textural variety and polyphony so well-known in Russian choral music.
