WOODSTOCK: THREE DAYS THAT

DEFINED A

GENERATION TUESDAY, AUGUST 6 AT 9 P.M. ON WXXI-TV In August 1969, half a million young people from all walks of life journeyed from every corner of the country to a dairy farm in upstate New York for a concert unprecedented in scope and influence. In conjunction with the 50th anniversary, Woodstock examines the tumultuous decade that led to those three historic days — years that saw the nation deeply divided by the Vietnam War and racial, generational and sexual politics — through the voices of those who were present for the event that would become the defining moment of the counterculture revolution. << BETHEL, NEW YORK, AUGUST 1969. NEED TO KNOW’S

DYNAMIC DUO MOVES ON

In July WXXI taped the last Need to Know episode with host and producer Hélène Biandudi Hofer and producer Martin Kaufman. In their final segment Marty, who is retiring after 25 years at WXXI, joined Hélène on set to share stories about his work at the station. You can watch the segment online at WXXINews.org and click on the Need to Know button at the top of the page. Hélène joined WXXI in September 2010 as the host of All Things Considered and a reporter/producer for WXXI News and soon became host and producer of Need to Know. She will continue her work as a journalist with The Solutions Journalism Network, an independent, non-profit organization that advocates an approach of solutions journalism. Marty has been the principal videographer for WXXI News & Public Affairs programming for 25 years. He helped launch Need to Know in 1997 and since 2004 has been the show’s producer. He also served as videographer for many of our documentaries such as Garth Fagan and Wynton Marsalis and national series like Second Opinion. Marty is looking forward to spending more time hiking, kayaking, and taking continuing education classes at RIT. We wish both of them the best of luck!

DEAR FRIEND, Is it just me, or does it seem like Rochester summers get busier and busier every year? The Jazz Festival is a good place to lose track of time – and we had the best week-and-ahalf of weather in recent memory. Jazz, the Fringe Festival, the Little Theatre, RoCo’s 6X6 Exhibition – it seems like we’re never at a loss for something to do!

Norm Silverstein

Of course, we always have exciting and interesting new programming for you, no matter where you are. If you called in a pledge during our (less than) one-day radio membership drive last month, we thank you. We’ll start our new budget year stronger because of you. Your support ensures that we can continue to bring you original television programming from award winning producers, including Country Music: A Film by Ken Burns, starting in September. In the meantime, and while the warm weather is still with us, here are five free events that WXXI is participating in this month: 1. Our Education Department has once again teamed up with the Rochester Central Library for “WXXI Kids Summer Exploration Stations” every Thursday from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. through August 8 at the library. This year’s series focuses on folktales about space. 2. Hochstein at High Falls, our summer lunchtime concert series held every Thursday throughout the summer, finishes out the season with performances by The White Hots on August 1, Hypnotic Clambake on August 8, and Jackson Cavalier on August 15. Pack a lunch and a lawn chair and head over to High Falls to enjoy the music alongside the beautiful falls. 3. Park Ave Fest is on Saturday, August 3 and Sunday, August 4 and we’ll be there with our WXXI/Little Theatre booth handing out 50th Anniversary Sesame Street fans to beat the heat and share information about all our programs, movies, and services. You’ll also have a chance to meet some of our radio hosts and WXXI News reporters. Our booth will be located between Arnold Park and Goodman. 4. WXXI and the Little Theatre are proud to host the Rochester Teen Film Festival, an annual celebration of young filmmakers. You can see the finalist films at a free screening at The Little on August 8 at 5:30 p.m. 5. There’s always great live music at the Little Café. Our annual series “Lakeshore at The Little” returns Monday evenings featuring a variety of singer-songwriters in the round and Wednesday evenings we present regional favorite Chris Wilson. Benny Bleu of The Brothers Blue and The Crawdiddies will be sharing his latest projects and musical explorations with his residency on Thursdays (August 8-29). Other artists in August include Hanna PK, Bradley Freeman, and Hannah Weidner. For bands, dates, and times, visit TheLittle.org. Enjoy the rest of your summer, and I hope to see you at one of our events this month! Best regards,

SEE YOU AT PARK AVE FEST! We’ll be on Park Ave Saturday, August 3 and Sunday, August 4 for the 43rd edition of the Park Ave Summer Arts Festival. Be sure to stop by and say hello to our staff and volunteers manning our booth.

NEWS&EVENTS

Q&A with a WXXI CORPORATE SPONSOR SUBURBAN DISPOSAL is a third-generation family-owned business. Since 1962, they’ve been providing commercial and residential waste disposal services to Monroe County and surrounding areas. WXXI connects with owner Erik Grimm to learn more. Q. What services do you offer? We provide waste and recycling collection for commercial businesses and organizations, and offer residential collection to homeowners, HOA’s, and property management companies. Roll-off containers and compactor installations are available to our retail and industrial customers and contractors. Q. One of your goals is to protect and enhance the environment. How do you address this goal? In 2012 we made significant capital investments and started transitioning our fleet to natural-gasfueled vehicles. Engines powered by natural gas have fewer emissions than diesel and are much quieter. We’re proud to say that today 60% of our fleet’s fuel consumption comes from natural gas. Q. Technology in the automotive industry is ever-changing. How does this affect your industry? We use the latest technology to enhance safe operations through the use of GPS tracking and on-board event recorders in all of our vehicles. This technology coupled with satellite and cellular connectivity enables us to promote strict safety standards and performance goals to manage risk and meet customer expectations. Q. What aren’t people recycling that we should be? We still see grass clippings in waste containers or plastic bags. Pound for pound this is the easiest and most beneficial material to divert from the landfill. Q. What is the oddest item you’ve found in the trash? We’ve gotten calls from customers who have accidentally thrown away a valuable item, a wedding ring for instance, in the trash and would like to follow the truck to the landfill and search for it! Q. Greatest pet peeve? We can’t stress it enough – slow down and use extreme caution when driving by collection trucks. Far too many times we have experienced avoidable accidents resulting from excess speed and impatience.

Sesame Street is turning 50 this year and WXXI Kids kicked off our own celebration by hosting a day of fun and games with the Rochester Red Wings at Frontier Field on June 30. The event was filled with Sesame Street giveaways, silly Sesame-themed challenges, and photo opportunities with Elmo! The crowd warmed up their singing voices and performed a stadium sing-along of “Sunny Days” to wish Sesame Street a happy birthday! This exemplified the strong love that exists for the show in the Rochester area. Sesame Street fans of all ages were able to take home fond memories of the occasion and even a piece of memorabilia through the making of cookie-monster hats and rubber-duckie giveaways. The 50th anniversary festivities continue all year long with more special events to come.

MONDAY, AUGUST 12 AT 9 P.M. AND TUESDAY, AUGUST 13 AT 8 P.M. ON WXXI-TV

This new three-part series explores American cities, towns, and rural communities through the lens of the family photo album, unearthing rich personal stories that expand our understanding of our shared history, diversity, and common values. Family photos of everyday milestones — marriage, childhood, a new car, a growing business — provide a visual portal through which to examine the roots, surprising connections, and provocative parallels that shed light on our collective past and our shared future.

^ Host Thomas Allen Harris in Detroit with Paul Wasserman, the owner of America’s oldest hat retailer - Henry the Hatter.

WHOLE TEACHERS – WHOLE STUDENTS

Travel with Rick Steves

Live from Here

Big Picture Science

Faced with our deep divisions in America, can education that is “prosocial” provide an alternative path for healing and greater understanding? And can schools cultivate students’ skills for social awareness and self-reflection? In this special, we visit two venues where leaders are taking strides toward an enlightened educational experience for young people and for faculty.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS: STUDENTS ON THE MOVE:

KEEPING UPROOTED KIDS IN SCHOOL SUNDAY, AUGUST 11 AT 9 P.M. ON AM 1370

A growing body of research says children with unstable housing are more likely to struggle in school and to drop out. This special focuses on two groups that often change addresses – those who are homeless and those whose parents are migrant farm workers – and explores efforts to help these students do well in school.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 25 AT 9 P.M. ON AM 1370

HOW COLLEGES ARE TRACKING STUDENTS TO BOOST GRADUATION As colleges look to increase their graduation rates, many are embracing the big data used by corporations and social media companies to track their customers. The Hechinger Report’s Jill Barshay teams up to examine the growing use of predictive analytics to boost graduation rates and revenue, and how student data is reshaping the college experience.

WHAT’S WRONG WITH HOW SCHOOLS TEACH READING

There’s a long-standing belief about how people read words that’s deeply embedded in teaching practices and curriculum materials used in most elementary school classrooms. The idea has been disproven by cognitive scientists, yet it continues to be taught in teacher preparation programs, promoted in professional development sessions, and marketed by publishers.
