DEAR FRIEND, We are proud to premiere our newest documentary, Journeys Through the Finger Lakes, on Monday, August 10 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV. This hour-long production celebrates a region deeply rooted in agriculture, innovation, Norm Silverstein social change and sustainability. Our production team did a wonderful job capturing the beauty of this spectacular area with breathtaking shots and some amazing drone footage. Our staff went above and beyond to bring you this documentary, doing a lot of work (such as video editing) from home. With everything going on in the world, we’re pleased to take an evening to celebrate and enjoy our Finger Lakes region and its amazing history. While we continue to navigate life with COVID-19, our education department and news team continue to be valuable resources for our community. Our Education staff is extending its weekday “Learn At Home” schedule as they work to combat “summer slide.” They have launched a “Camp at Home” program, where they share weekly fun, creative, age-appropriate activities for families to do at home through August 28. At the same time, WXXI News and CITY reporters continue to report on the impact of COVID-19 and the effect it is having on businesses and our community with more depth than nearly any other news service in the region. In one way or another, the virus has touched us all. At the end of March, we had to make the tough decision to suspend printing CITY newspaper, and all stories were moved online. But with the announcement, came the promise that we would revisit the option of a “print edition.” Over the last few months, CITY staff has researched and planned for what that would look like. After much consideration, CITY will be printing a monthly magazine, which will include integrating this program guide into that publication. We’ll share more details about this in our September guide, as we are still working out the details. But, it looks like an exciting relaunch that many in our community have been waiting for! On a sad note, last month we lost a dear friend of WXXI, the Little Theatre, and many other local cultural institutions. Rochester’s movie critic and tie to Hollywood, Jack Garner, passed away on July 5 at the age of 75. For more than four decades, Jack reviewed films for Gannett Newspapers here and across the country. But the lure of the silver screen could never draw him away from his Rochester home. On July 11, WXXI aired an encore presentation of a 2017 Norm & Co. with Jack, as a tribute to the life and legacy of a man who so many in Rochester could call a friend. If you missed the airing, it will be archived online at WXXI.org/normandcompany. Finally, if you made an additional gift during our end-of-fiscal year radio membership drive on June 30, we thank you! You helped us end the year strong and on-budget. Your support promises that despite these difficult times, we are able to provide the valuable news coverage, educational programs, documentaries and outreach services so many in our community depend on. Thank you, and stay safe! Best regards,
Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org | @normWXXI

NEWS&EVENTS
Q&A with a WXXI CORPORATE SPONSOR VAN BORTEL has been taking care of customers in the Rochester and Finger Lakes region since 1991. They take pride in their commitment to their customers and the community with kindness and honesty at the center of everything they do. WXXI connects with Founder and President, Kitty Van Bortel, to learn more about what it takes to succeed.
KITTY VAN BORTEL
Q. You have built three successful businesses. To what do you attribute your success? Having a kind heart, doing business in a way that builds and maintains a strong reputation, and being competitive, especially early on in my career as a woman in a male-dominated industry. Q. Can you share why making community support a part of both your life and business has been important? Giving back to the community is the right thing to do. We are proud to support local nonprofits and causes in important areas such as the environment, community, health, education, and pets. The Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester is personal for me as a cancer survivor and is so important for those touched by cancer. The Susan B. Anthony Museum & House educates generations and inspires others to change the world for the better. IAC Kids (It’s About Caring for Kids) provides financial support to families in need when children are seriously ill. All of these wonderful organizations are making the world a better place. Q. How do you think the COVID-19 pandemic will change the way people buy cars? Customers are completing more steps in the research phase and overall purchase process from home. People are doing their homework while working with us online and by phone. Our customers are well-informed and more confident in choosing a vehicle, finance or lease terms, and a dealership that cares about people. Q. What is one question you would recommend people looking to buy a car ask, regardless of where they are shopping? How does your service department rank? Q. Favorite Subaru of all time? For me, it is the Subaru Outback. Year after year, it has been my trustworthy travel companion on this adventure.

MONA SEGHATOLESLAMI Congratulations to WXXI Classical 91.5 host Mona Seghatoleslami and WXXI News reporter/host Beth Adams for receiving journalism awards from Public Media Journalists Association. Mona received 2nd place in the ‘Best use of Sound’ category for a feature she did called “New Sounds from Ossia” about student-run ensemble at the Eastman School of Music. Beth won first place for her radio feature “Mission Mustang,” about a military veteran who found a kindred spirit at EquiCenter in Honeoeye Falls in his path to healing. Retired Lt. Col. Steve Bunch worked to gentle “Liberty,” a wild horse, who was experiencing some of the same challenges as Bunch as they both adjust to a new way of life. You can listen to both award-winning entries at Classical915.org.

WHY SO MANY KIDS DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY READ SUNDAY, AUGUST 30 AT 9 PM ON AM 1370
COVID ON CAMPUS
The Coronavirus pandemic represents the greatest challenge to American higher education in decades. Many colleges and universities are closing or dramatically cutting their offerings. Students’ lives and academic plans are in turmoil. Millions of students are going to class online, many for the first time. It is a time of intense difficulty, risk, and potential promise. This special report will explore issues facing institutions, students and families.

WHAT THE WORDS SAY:
Everyone agrees the goal of reading instruction is for children to understand what they read. The question is: how does a little kid get there? Senior correspondent Emily Hanford explores what reading scientists have figured out about how reading comprehension works and why poverty and race can affect a child’s reading development. We meet parents who are desperately searching for schools where their children will be taught how to read, and teachers who are learning things they were never taught about how reading comprehension develops.
THE ECONOMY, WHAT NOW?
SUNDAYS, AUGUST 2, 9 AND 16 AT 9 PM ON AM 1370 In this three-part Marketplace special we look at how the pandemic has effected the economy.
TECHNOLOGY: THE PIVOT POINT
SUNDAY, AUGUST 2 AT 9 PM ON AM 1370 During this recession, technology has been keeping society and the economy afloat, from the platforms distributing food and masks to the physical wiring that lets us all stay connected. Biotech companies are working to transform the way we fight and cure diseases like COVID-19, and educators are struggling to find ways to make digital learning as effective as in-person classes. Marketplace Tech’s Molly Wood shares how current innovations might help us transition to our post-pandemic future.
REIMAGINING THE ECONOMY
SUNDAY, AUGUST 9 AT 9 PM ON AM 1370 Once the public health emergency becomes manageable, this country still faces one of the biggest public issues of our lifetimes: will we go back to business, inequity and the systemic racism we had, or will we draw a blueprint for the economy we want? In this one-hour special, Marketplace Morning Report’s David Brancaccio explores what a new reimagined economy might look like and what it will take for us to get there.
THE ECONOMY, RESET SUNDAY, AUGUST 16 AT 9 PM ON AM 1370 The pandemic and the financial crisis have highlighted a fundamental truth: our economy has never worked for everyone. The Black unemployment rate has consistently been twice as high as the white unemployment rate, even during the past 11 years of economic expansion. Kai Ryssdal talks with experts about what it will take to begin to end the systemic racism that has defined our society and our economy for the last 400 years.

BREAD & ROSES:
WOMEN IN CLASSICAL MUSIC WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26 AT 2 PM ON CLASSICAL 91.5 August 26 marks 100 years since women in America won the right to vote. This important milestone is the starting point for this special broadcast which looks at the achievements of women in music, set against historic, social, and political obstacles which have worked against female composers, conductors, and performers. Andrea Blain takes an in-depth look at the ways in which women in music have had to fight for recognition, opportunities and rewards in the same way women fought for the vote. With music illustrations from the world of film, opera, orchestral, choral and chamber music, ‘Bread and Roses: Women in Classical Music’ celebrates women and music, striving for equality (Bread) and 17 artistry (Roses).
