FEBRUARY MEMBER BENEFIT

BLACKFRIARS THEATRE 795 E MAIN ST, ROCHESTER, NY 14605 (585) 454-1260 • www.blackfriars.org VALID FOR 2-FOR-1 ADMISSION FOR A PERFORMANCE DURING MARCH 22 - APRIL 7.

DEAR FRIEND, I hope you were able to attend one of our Dialogue on Disability events or had the chance to catch some of the special programming we featured last month. Since 2003, WXXI and the Al Sigl Norm Silverstein Community of Agencies have worked together to help break the ingrained stereotypes about individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities. The vital work of Dialogue on Disability served as a model for our current work with the Golisano Foundation and our Move to Include initiative. Move to Include allows us to continue to present special TV and radio programming, news features, film screenings with panel discussions, and other offerings that engage our audiences and promote inclusion throughout the year. This month we’re proud to celebrate Black History Month with special programming that spotlights some of the men and women who shaped the Black experience. This includes Basquiat: American Masters (February 24 on WXXI-TV), which looks at one of the most influential American artists of the 20th century; and Roads to Memphis: American Masters (February 26 on WXXI-TV), which tells the entwined stories of assassin James Earl Ray and his victim, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (A complete list of Black History Month programming can be found at WXXI.org/bh.) February also marks our annual trip to Washington for the Public Media Summit, where public media leaders meet with Congress to remind them how important federal funding is to our educational efforts and the future of public broadcasting. While government funding is only about $1.35 per capita, it’s a critical source that helps us leverage private support that allows WXXI to deliver thoughtful, commercial-free programming that serves the entire Rochester region. Of course, you may be among the thousands who tune in to our radio services, including local news and talk shows that can only be found on WXXI. Our music stations promote arts and culture and work closely to support other institutions, such as the RPO, the Eastman School of Music and Hochstein. Our news department strives to bring you trusted and balanced reporting, something we need more than ever, and our prime-time TV schedule promises programs that educate, entertain, and enlighten. From education to public affairs, to arts and culture, WXXI makes a positive impact on our community each and every day. Thank you again for your membership support. It helps make all of it possible! Best Regards,

Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org | @normWXXI

NEWS&EVENTS

Q&A with a WXXI CORPORATE SPONSOR Founded in 1972, NORTHFIELD DESIGNER GOLDSMITHS creates custom jewelry – from necklaces to earrings to wedding bands and diamond rings inspired by the natural contours of hands. WXXI sits down with founder and owner Gudmund Jos Olsson to learn more about his work. Q. What makes your design work unique? I contour my rings to the shape of the hand. As they fit to the hand, they’re comfortable to wear and they then turn less, saving the settings from wear. Q. What’s the process of creating a custom piece of jewelry? The process from idea to finished piece may take from one to three weeks and begins with a design discussion with the customer. From there, I’ll draw sketches until the customer likes where we’re going. The next step for me is to make a 3D wax model the customer can try on and maybe ask for some fine-tuning. Q. What advice do you have for couples as they begin to shop for engagement rings? Look at other stores to get an idea of their ability to accommodate your preferences, or their process if you’re looking for a unique design, their timing, pricing, etc. Then visit my studio and learn about my custom process. When you have your rings crafted for you, they are more meaningful and speak of your relationship as one-of-a-kind. Q. What types of pieces are good candidates for a custom redesign? Older engagement rings and wedding bands because they’re so meaningful! What can beat Grandma’s diamond in a new setting?! You’ll have something both old and new. Q. How did Rochester become home for you? My brother and I printed on t-shirts in my home province of Ångermanland in the north of Sweden. We became a big customer of Champion Products here in Rochester and they invited me to come and work with them. I had degrees from universities similar to RIT, which led to my current love affair with metalsmithing.

GUDMUND JOS OLSSON

Q. Where can people find you when you’re not crafting jewelry? Working in my Asian garden, fussing with bonsai, mowing, trimming hedges or trees… or shoveling snow. www.northfieldgoldsmiths.com @NorthfieldDesignerGoldsmiths NorthfieldGoldsmiths

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:

JAPANESE AMERICAN INCARCERATION IN WWII SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 24 & MARCH 3 AT 9 P.M. ON AM 1370 President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 just months after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Some 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry were forced from their homes on the West Coast and sent to one of ten “relocation” camps, where they were imprisoned behind barbed wire for the length of the war. Two-thirds were American citizens. This three-part Order 9066 chronicles the history of this incarceration through vivid, first-person accounts of those who lived through it. With archival audio, historical context, and deeply personal narratives, the series offers audiences a nuanced and memorable account of how this shocking violation of American democracy came to pass, and its legacy in the present.

WITNESS: BLACK HISTORY MONTH

LOVE IS ON THE AIR: A TBTL VALENTINE’S DAY SPECIAL

The BBC World Service presents a special hour-long edition of its Witness program, with incredible, first-person interviews about the African-American experience. Audiences will travel back to an iconic photograph from the civil rights campaign with Gloria Richardson. They’ll hear the struggle for fair pay from Doug Williams, the first African-American quarterback to play in the Superbowl. And Congresswoman Barbara Lee reflects on the moral stand she took in 2001 against the open-ended Global War on Terror. Witness presents stories that are inspiring, harrowing, and richly told.

Too Beautiful to Live (TBTL) podcast hosts Luke Burbank and Andrew Walsh share stories of puppy love, first crushes, and other (often misguided) longings of the heart. They’ll hear from listeners and friends of the show, and they’ll explore their own romantic misadventures through the years.

1:00PM THE METROPOLITAN OPERA 2/2

Bizet: Carmen Mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine reprises her remarkable portrayal of opera’s ultimate seductress, a triumph in her 2017 debut performances, with impassioned tenors Yonghoon Lee and Roberto Alagna as her lover, Don José. Omer Meir Wellber and Louis Langrée share conducting duties for Sir Richard Eyre’s powerful production, a Met favorite since its 2009 premiere. (LIVE IN HD)

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 15 AT 1 P.M. ON CLASSICAL 91.5 Julia Figueras welcomes the Gateways Brass Collective to the studio. This touring quintet of brass musicians of African descent was in Rochester recently to perform with the RPO for the annual Martin Luther King celebration. They’ll talk about what it’s like to be a classical musician of African descent, and the role the Collective has as they travel around the country performing. (Repeats 2/17 at 1 p.m.)

2/9

Tchaikovsky: Iolanta/ Bartok: Bluebeard’s Castle (double bill) Mariusz Treliński’s haunting production of the pairing of Tchaikovsky’s and Bartók’s one-act operas makes its first return to the stage since its Met premiere in the 2014–15 season. Soprano Sonya Yoncheva—following her triumphant 2017–18 performances as Tosca— is the blind princess, Iolanta, who discovers love for the first time, opposite tenor Matthew Polenzani as the dashing knight Vaudémont. In Bartók’s chilling Bluebeard’s Castle, baritone Gerald Finley is the menacing Bluebeard, and soprano Angela Denoke is his initially unsuspecting new wife. Henrik Nánási conducts.

2/16

2/23

Baritone Peter Mattei and bassbaritone Luca Pisaroni star as opera’s most notorious seducer in Mozart’s masterpiece of dark comedy. Cornelius Meister makes his Met debut conducting performances that also include sopranos Rachel WillisSørensen and Guanqun Yu as Donna Anna, sopranos Federica Lombardi and Susanna Phillips as Donna Elvira, and basses Ildar Abdrazakov and Adam Plachetka as Leporello.

Verdi’s tragic jester returns in Michael Mayer’s neon-bedecked, Las Vegas– themed production. Baritones Roberto Frontali and George Gagnidze share the title role, and soprano Nadine Sierra reprises her portrayal of Gilda, the role that helped launch her nowblossoming Met career. Tenors Vittorio Grigolo and Bryan Hymel share the role of the lascivious Duke, and Nicola Luisotti conducts.
