DEAR FRIEND, Though it seems like we just celebrated the New Year, February also features several events that WXXI will be commemorating. We observe Black History Month with special programming that spotlights the men and women who shaped the Black experience. This Norm Silverstein includes Tell Them We are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities (2/16 at 2 PM on WXXI-TV) and Miles Davis: Birth of Cool, which takes a hard look at the mythology that surrounds the legend (2/25 at 9 PM on WXXI-TV). Additional specials on WXXI-TV and WXXI-WORLD are noted in the TV grid of this magazine, and a list of all of our programming can be found at WXXI.org/bh. February 15 also marks the birthday of Susan B. Anthony, so you will be seeing the start of WXXI’s Celebrate 2020 initiative. This will be a remarkable year for women’s rights and WXXI is planning to lead the celebration through TV, radio, on-line and film programming – plus news reports, special segments, and discussions. The first of the TV and radio spots, telling stories of the women who fought for women’s suffrage, will air this month. There will be more information about WXXI’s Celebrate 2020 in the near future as we proudly feature moments in women’s history that had their roots in Rochester. February is also when I make my annual trip to Washington with WXXI Trustees and my fellow public media colleagues to speak to Congress about the importance of federal funding for our mission. Federal funding ensures that we can continue to provide essential educational, local, and cultural programming; trusted, in-depth news; and emergency and communitybased services. Year after year, we’ve been able to protect federal funding because you – and many other dedicated viewers and listeners – have expressed overwhelming support for your station to Congress. And for that we thank you! Thanks also to This Old House host Kevin O’Connor and carpenter Nathan Gilbert, our guests in Rochester last month for a special 40th Anniversary Celebration of TV’s original home-improvement show. More than 600 fans attended the event at Hochstein Performance Hall and enjoyed Kevin and Nathan’s behind-the-scenes look at 40 years of home-improvement, followed by a great Q&A. We also had another successful Dialogue on Disability, our week-long initiative with our partner Al Sigl Community of Agencies. The highlight was our sensory-friendly family event with Julia – the first Sesame Street Muppet on the autism spectrum – at the new Golisano Autism Center. Hundreds of kids of all abilities enjoyed a fun-filled afternoon with Julia and hands-on activities. Our partnership with Al Sigl Community of Agencies is supported by the Golisano Foundation. From education to public affairs to arts and culture, WXXI makes a positive impact on our community each and every day. Thank you again for your membership support. It helps make all of it possible! Best regards (and Happy Valentine’s Day),

Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org | @normWXXI

DOYOU

RECOGNIZE

THIS CYCLIST?

Rochester school board member Willa Powell found this little piece of history. It’s a poster she purchased in an estate sale. The thing is, no one at WXXI recognizes the image or the artist. Willa believes the artist’s signature is “J.A. Clark.” Does it look familiar to you? We would love to know the story behind it. If you can help, please email classical@wxxi.org. *This piece was reprinted from a blog post written by WXXI Classical 91.5 host Brenda Tremblay.

LA DAMNATION DE FAUST

MANON

LE NOZZE DI FIGARO

AGRIPPINA

GERSHWIN

One of America’s favorite operas returns to the Met for the first time in nearly 30 years. James Robinson’s stylish production transports audiences to Catfish Row on the Charleston waterfront, vibrant with the music, dancing, emotion, and heartbreak of its inhabitants. “If you’re going to stage Gershwin’s opera, this is how,” raved the Guardian when the new production premiered in London in 2018. David Robertson conducts a dynamic cast, featuring Eric Owens and Angel Blue in the title roles, and an ensemble that includes Golda Schultz, Latonia Moore, Denyce Graves, Frederick Ballentine, Alfred Walker, and Ryan Speedo Green.

16

BERLIOZ

Berlioz’s compelling take on the Faust legend returns for the first time in a decade, with an ideal lineup of stars. Highflying tenors Bryan Hymel and Michael Spyres sing the doomed and besotted Faust, opposite dazzling mezzosoprano Elīna Garanča as the forsaken Marguerite and bass Ildar Abdrazakov as the malevolent Méphistophélès. Edward Gardner conducts.

MASSENET Exhilarating soprano Lisette Oropesa stars as the irresistible title character, the tragic beauty who yearns for the finer things in life, in Laurent Pelly’s revealing production. Tenor Michael Fabiano is the besotted Chevalier des Grieux, whose desperate love for Manon proves their undoing. Maurizio Benini conducts Massenet’s sensual score.

MOZART

Two outstanding casts— including sopranos Nadine Sierra, Anita Hartig, Susanna Phillips, and Hanna-Elisabeth Müller; mezzo-sopranos Gaëlle Arquez and Marianne Crebassa; baritone Mariusz Kwiecien; and bass-baritones Luca Pisaroni and Adam Plachetka—come together for Mozart’s scintillating class comedy. Antonello Manacorda and Cornelius Meister conduct Sir Richard Eyre’s fast-paced production.

HANDEL

Handel’s tale of intrigue and impropriety in ancient Rome receives its first Met performances, with star mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato as the controlling, power-hungry Agrippina and Harry Bicket conducting. The all-star cast features mezzosoprano Kate Lindsey as Agrippina’s son and future emperor Nerone, soprano Brenda Rae as the seductive Poppea, countertenor Iestyn Davies as the ambitious officer Ottone, and bass Matthew Rose as the weary emperor Claudius.
