JANUARY 2019 WXXI’s annual initiative with Al Sigl Community of Agencies kicks off

Monday, January 14 with a week of special programming designed to stimulate dialogue about people of all abilities and motivate us to be a more inclusive community.

The centerpiece of Dialogue on Disability week is a FREE screening of PERFECTLY NORMAL FOR ME on Tuesday, January 15, 6pm at the Little Theatre (240 East Avenue). In this intimate verité documentary, four charismatic kids strive for acceptance in a world that is often, at best, indifferent to them. You’ll meet Alexandria, Jake, Caitlin and Veronica, ages 5 to 15, who want to change the conversation. They reveal in their own words what it’s like to deal with the literal ups and downs of a challenged life. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the director Catherine Tambini via Skype. No tickets required. Seats are first come, first served.

Check inside for more special programming, including an EXITED listening session at Al Sigl on January 14, plus visit WXXI.org/dod for a complete schedule.

DEAR FRIEND, Happy New Year! As you may have heard,

we are kicking off 2019 with a good news story about independent media in our community. WXXI has signed a letter of intent to acquire CITY Newspaper and its digital platforms. Mary Anna and Bill Towler, founders Norm Silverstein and co-publishers of CITY Newspaper, approached WXXI with the desire to extend the service of the newspaper beyond their eventual retirement. They said that WXXI, with its like-minded mission of service to the community, was the perfect partner. The goal is to allow WXXI to better serve our community through enhanced coverage of arts and culture, education, neighborhoods, and events. It’s an example of what a modern media organization should be! Also in 2019, as we work to build a community that is respectful, caring, and inclusive, January marks our annual Dialogue on Disability initiative, a partnership with Al Sigl Community of Agencies, which runs January 14-20. For more than a decade this initiative has featured special programs that spotlight the abilities of people with disabilities and encourages dialogue about the vital role inclusion plays in our community. Along with prime-time specials, news reports, and community conversations on Connections with Evan Dawson, we are hosting a free screening of Perfectly Normal For Me, which spotlights a group of exceptional children who teach us about perseverance, inclusion, and self-acceptance. It screens at the Little Theatre on Tuesday, January 15 at 6 p.m. (You’ll find details about the film on the cover and a list of special programming on the following pages.) The vital work of Dialogue on Disability has also served as a model for our Move to Include initiative. Al Sigl and WXXI envisioned a project with even bigger community impact and together we worked with the Golisano Foundation to create Move to Include, a project that encourages thoughtful discussion about issues of inclusion and the differently-abled year round.

Coming up from WXXI and the Little Theatre, two much-anticipated new seasons premiere on WXXI-TV in January: Jeanna Coleman returns as Queen Victoria in an all new season of Masterpiece’s Victoria and Martin Clunes is back for an 8th season as the brash Doc Martin. In celebration of those two series, WXXI is presenting a sneak peek of the first episode of EACH at the Little Theatre! On Sunday, January 6 at 11 a.m., you can watch the season premiere of Victoria, then on Monday, January 14 at 6 p.m., it’s Doc Martin’s premiere. Best of all, both screenings at The Little are free. 2019 will be an exciting year of programming from WXXI, The Little and soon – CITY Newspaper. Thank you for your support and again Happy New Year from all of us at WXXI! Best Regards,

Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org | @normWXXI

Q&A with a WXXI CORPORATE SPONSOR Ramerman Leadership Group is a multi-disciplined team of certified professional

consultants and coaches who collaborate with motivated executives and teams for transformation of their leadership, their organizations, and their lives. Clients range from for-profit businesses to not-for-profit organizations and include education, healthcare, and manufacturing industries. In his own words, CEO Jim Ramerman says, “We ask powerful, evocative, challenging questions of leaders to help them grow.” WXXI connects with Jim to learn more.

Q. Benefits of a leadership program?

The ROI is significant. Research finds that the return on executive coaching is 5-7 times the initial investment! Other benefits include better decision-making, lower turnover, and higher employee engagement and satisfaction.

Q. How does curiosity impact leadership?

Being curious, and caring, by asking powerful and evocative questions builds relationships. Curiosity helps you understand others, and is key to understanding and transforming organizations.

Q. What’s a common theme among clients?

Generating confidence. The great majority of clients, of all of us, want to be more confident about ourselves, our work, our relations…everything. That is why our new leadership program for 2019 is on executive presence and having the confidence to connect with others and to influence effectively.

Q. Greatest determinants for success as a leader?

Long-term success comes from keeping a healthy tension between confidence and humility. Leaders who believe in themselves and their perspective, while being open to the ideas of others, feedback, personal growth, and being able to admit weaknesses and mistakes. In addition, talent management and developing people are critical.

Q. Fundamental themes for growth?

Themes include: hunger, a desire to grow; ask the core questions; be comfortable with discomfort; persevere and follow through; don’t try to do it alone; enhance your emotional intelligence (relationships) as well as your business.

Q. Any light reading you’d recommend?

• Both light and powerful: Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box by the Arbinger Institute • Light reading: any Dan Brown novel New corporate address: 140 Allens Creek Road, Suite 230, Rochester, NY 14618 JIM RAMERMAN, CEO

A BEAUTIFUL SYMPHONY OF BROTHERHOOD:

A MUSICAL JOURNEY IN THE LIFE OF MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. MONDAY, JANUARY 21 AT 3 P.M. ON CLASSICAL 91.5

Martin Luther King, Jr. grew up listening to and singing church songs, and saw gospel and folk music as natural tools to further the civil rights movement. Host Terrance McKnight interweaves musical examples with Dr. King’s own speeches and sermons to illustrate the powerful place that music held in his work— and examines how the musical community responded to and participated in Dr. King’s cause. 1:00PM THE METROPOLITAN OPERA 1/5

Verdi: Otello

Conducting sensation Gustavo Dudamel makes his Met debut leading Verdi’s towering Shakespearean masterpiece, in the first revival of Bartlett Sher’s gripping 2015 production. The cast includes dynamic tenor Stuart Skelton in the title role, star soprano Sonya Yoncheva as the devoted but doomed Desdemona, and outstanding baritone Željko Lučić as the treacherous Iago.

1/12

Francesco Cilea: Andreana Lecouvreur

Soprano Anna Netrebko joins the ranks of Renata Tebaldi, Montserrat Caballé, and Renata Scotto, taking on—for the first time at the Met—the title role of the real-life French actress who dazzled 18th-century audiences with her onand offstage passion. The soprano is joined by tenor Piotr Beczała as Adriana’s lover, Maurizio. The principal cast also features mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili and baritone Ambrogio Maestri. Gianandrea Noseda conducts. Sir David McVicar’s staging, which sets the action in a working replica of a Baroque theater, premiered at the Royal Opera House in London, where the Guardian praised the “elegant production, sumptuously designed ... The spectacle guarantees a good night out.” ALSO LIVE IN HD AT AREA MOVIE THEATERS.

1/19

1/26

Debussy’s only opera, a mesmerizing meditation on love and betrayal, returns to the Met stage for the first time in almost a decade, with Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducting the landmark score. A pair of brilliant young Met stars, tenor Paul Appleby and mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, are the naïve title lovers, and baritone Kyle Ketelsen is the imperious Prince Golaud. Ferruccio Furlanetto, as Arkel, and MarieNicole Lemieux, as Geneviève, complete the cast.

Composer Nico Muhly unveils his second new opera for the Met with this gripping reimagining of Winston Graham’s novel, set in the 1950s, about a beautiful, mysterious young woman who assumes multiple identities. Director Michael Mayer and his creative team have devised a fast-moving, cinematic world for this exhilarating story of denial and deceit, which also inspired a film by Alfred Hitchcock. Mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard sings the enigmatic Marnie, and baritone Christopher Maltman is the man who pursues her—with disastrous results. Robert Spano conducts.

Debussy: Pelléas et Mélisande

Nico Muhly: Marnie
