the civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life. To commemorate this law, WXXI is leading a national initiative that uses the power of public media to inform and transform attitudes and behavior about inclusion. It’s called Move to Include and it is modeled after the local version of the same name that WXXI and the Golisano Foundation launched in 2014. Move to Include spotlights people of differing abilities and disability through television specials, radio programs, news, special events, and social media. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting recognized the importance of the Move to Include model and awarded WXXI a grant to expand efforts to five additional public media stations. Together the stations are creating programming to meet their community needs while expanding awareness regionally and nationally. Join us as we celebrate people of all abilities with special programming throughout the month. To learn more about this initiative visit movetoinclude.us.

DEAR FRIEND, The last few months have been incredibly difficult for all of us, and the protests and riots in June have added to the stress that so many of us are feeling. Our community is hurting, and the healing process is going to take some time. WXXI, CITY Newspaper and the Little Theatre stand in solidarity with all those who are committed to fighting racial injustice.
Norm Silverstein
In these difficult times, our staff has risen to the occasion. Our Education colleagues have done incredible work in providing resources for families on how to talk to young children about race and racism. Our News Department has gone above-and-beyond to keep our community informed and to give people the opportunity to question those in power. And, our TV department has curated several on-demand programs focused on race relations. I encourage you to visit our Black Heritage and Culture page on our website at WXXI.org/bh to explore the many programs and resources available. As you saw on the cover, this month WXXI takes our Move to Include initiative to a national level. We launched Move to Include in Rochester with The Golisano Foundation six years ago with the goal to break stereotypes of individuals with disabilities. Now, thanks to a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, WXXI is leading a pilot project to expand this initiative in five communities across the country. WFYI (Indianapolis), OPB (Oregon), WGCU (Southwest Florida), WCNY (Syracuse, NY), and Iowa Public Television will work to build more inclusive communities by inspiring and motivating people to embrace different abilities and include all people in every aspect of community life. Through television, radio, news, special events, and social media the stations will spotlight people with differing abilities and disability issues for positive change. They will work to organize community partnerships, acquire and create content for television and radio, and provide outreach, engagement, and promotion for the initiative. People with disabilities make up our single largest minority in this country. We are proud to expand Move to Include into these five new regions, using public media’s many platforms to promote equity and inclusion. To learn more about what our partner stations are doing in their communities, visit movetoinclude.us. Finally, if you made a pledge during our June membership campaign, we thank you. Your support enables us to provide the news, talk, programming, educational resources, and music that our community relies on. Stay safe,

Q&A with a WXXI COMMUNITY PARTNER
ANDREW ZEPP
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The FINGER LAKES LAND TRUST is a non-profit conservation organization that protects over 24,000 acres of our region’s beloved natural areas and working landscapes. They are committed to conserving land in perpetuity – beyond our lifetimes and for the benefit of future generations. WXXI connects with Andrew Zepp, Executive Director of Finger Lakes Land Trust, to learn more about their efforts. Q. Finger Lakes Land Trust recently celebrated 30 years of conservation in the region. What has been one of the most rewarding projects? The protection of Grimes Glen in Naples was particularly special. This iconic gorge has been used by the public for generations but was at risk of being sold and having access terminated. We partnered with Ontario County to acquire the Glen, protect it through a perpetual conservation easement, and open it as a county park. Today, residents and visitors alike can still cool off on a summer day at this local attraction. Q. Where do your greatest concerns lie for the Finger Lakes region? Recent outbreaks of toxic algae and declining water quality in some areas is a huge concern. The lakes are the lifeblood of our region. To address this issue, the Land Trust is working with lake associations and government conservation agencies to protect streams and wetlands and also to reduce nutrient runoff from the surrounding landscape. Q. Can you tell us a little bit about GoFingerLakes.org? GoFingerLakes.org was launched to help connect people with nature and opportunities for outdoor recreation. Residents and visitors alike are using the site and we have received a lot of positive feedback. While some use it solely as a source of information, others have become involved in our conservation efforts. Q. Can you explain what Treks & Talks is? Talks & Treks is a region-wide series of educational programs at some of our premier natural areas. These are offered at no charge and are led by expert volunteer naturalists. Due to the pandemic, this program is temporarily on hold but we look forward to resuming these trips once it is safe to do so. Q. One personal recommendation for must-do activity in the Finger Lakes this summer? Visit one of our gorges! Whether at one of our state parks or land trust nature preserves, this is a great way to beat the heat and experience nature. Opportunities range from improved trails suitable for all ages to rugged adventures that are off the beaten path. Visit GoFingerLakes.org to learn about the best places to go. WXXI RECEIVES A SPECIAL GIFT FROM A LONGTIME FRIEND AND SUPPORTER OF PUBLIC MEDIA Betty Strasenburgh, WXXI and The Little Theatre Honorary Trustee, recently made an additional gift to the organization in honor of WXXI President Norm Silverstein. Passionate about news and arts, Ms. Strasenbugh has been a long-time supporter of public media, especially classical music and local news. In fact, this year WXXI’s radio studios were named “The Betty Strasenburgh Studios” in recognition of her support. Her additional gift will go to support the work of WXXI News and its expanded coverage during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meet the Radical Monarchs, a group of young girls of color on the frontlines of social justice. Set in Oakland, California, the film documents the journey of the group as they earn badges for completing units on such subjects as being an LGBTQ ally, preserving the environment, and disability justice. We follow the two founders as they face the challenge to grow the organization, before and after the 2016 election.

CAPITOL STEPS: POLITICS TAKES A HOLIDAY TH
JULY 4 EDITION SATURDAY, JULY 4 AT 1 PM ON AM 1370
The Capitol Steps addresses timely issues set to show tunes! There’s John Kerry singing “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Crimea?” and Hillary Clinton admonishing Joe Biden to “Let it Go” when it comes to running for President. It’s a show so clogged with jokes that Chris Christie threatened to shut it down! There’s plenty of material to go around so why not sit back, relax and forget you voted for any of the people mentioned in our special! Not for the faint of heart or for those considering running for office.

Performance Today with Fred Child
In the 1950s, Capitol Records took a chance on a washed-up Frank Sinatra. He sang what he called “saloon songs” but he also made a series of recordings that were hipper, more jazz-inflected, but also harder-edged. In their own way, they were as sexually aware as the “saloon songs.”

HOW DUKE ELLINGTON WROTE
The Score with Edmund Stone Fascinatin’ Rhythm w/ Michael Lasser
SATURDAY JULY 11
Sunday Baroque with Suzanne Bona
No one worked the way Ellington did. Duke Ellington played piano onstage, but not when he was composing. He had a way of writing unlike any other composer. After a night of playing, individual musicians begin to improvise. Ellington listened, selected, and shaped what he heard. Out of the chaos came an intricate unified piece.

Between the 1870s and the 1920s, when large numbers of young women left home and family for independent lives in the big city, they were daring a great deal—reputation, physical safety, homesickness, and conventional happiness. The composers and lyricists of the time told their stories in song.

Lyricist Sheldon Harnick was never a household name despite his great success on Broadway— Fiddler on the Roof, Fiorello, She Loves Me, and more. Nothing was harder for him to write than love songs even though every musical requires them. He met the challenge in his own way.
