DEAR FRIEND, Last December WXXI announced that we had signed a letter of intent to acquire the weekly publication CITY Newspaper and its digital platforms. I am proud to report that on May 1st the acquisition was completed and we are excited to have the opportunity to ensure Norm Silverstein CITY’s long-term success in our community. This merger will help WXXI to better serve our community through enhanced coverage of arts and culture, education, neighborhoods, and events. As one of our Trustees said, “It’s an example of what a modern media organization should be doing.” WXXI was approached by Mary Anna and Bill Towler, co-founders and co-publishers of CITY, regarding their desire to preserve the service of the paper beyond their eventual retirement. Independent local journalism continues to be important to the vibrancy of communities nationwide. We believe this acquisition will preserve and expand the quality and depth of local reporting and prioritize coverage of the arts and culture in the Greater Rochester area. WXXI can envision a strong brand extension and a sustainable future for the paper with our merged community service. So what can you expect from this acquisition? • More local long-form news coverage with daily local talk, a state government reporter and several enterprise and investigative staff reporters – all going after stories that make a difference in the community. • Digital content that expands reach and engagement by local talent through creative original programming and social media. • Strengthened curated entertainment experiences. Lifestyle reporting and events calendars that drive arts discovery and appreciation. • Special film screenings, Connections with Evan Dawson, CITY’s Best of Rochester poll and event, concerts, music festivals, intimate performances and interviews with big-name artists. • A good working relationship: WXXI and CITY are looking forward to working together, and you can see it in print and on air, where having additional reporters is starting to make a difference. I’ll be sharing more details about this acquisition and how we’ll be working together to increase our coverage of politics, culture, arts and, most importantly, our neighborhoods. We want to be hyper-local in our relationship with CITY and cover the kind of stories you don’t find elsewhere. WXXI and CITY together will work to give you the local coverage you want and deserve! Best regards, Sincerely,

Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org @normWXXI

NEWS&EVENTS

Q&A with a WXXI CORPORATE SPONSOR THE ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION is the leading voluntary health organization

providing care and support to families affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementias. The Rochester and Finger Lakes Region chapter serves Chemung, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne, and Yates counties. On June 21, The Longest Day®, and throughout the month of June, people can come together to fight the darkness of Alzheimer’s and other dementias through an activity of their choice, ranging from crafts to hiking. The Longest Day® campaign raises funds for the Association’s care, support and research efforts.

Q. What are the early warning signs of Alzheimer’s? The warning signs of dementia are: (1) memory loss that disrupts daily life, (2) changes in mood and personality, (3) withdrawal from social activities, (4) poor judgment, (5) misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps, (6) problems with words in speaking or writing, (7) trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships, (8) confusion with time or place, (9) difficulty completing familiar tasks, and (10) challenges in planning or solving problems. Q. What are some of the best resources available to individuals and families impacted by memory loss? Our 24/7 helpline (800-272-3900), care consultations, support groups, and social engagement programs for individuals and families affected by memory loss, Alzheimer’s or another dementia. Q. How can people get involved in the fight to end Alzheimer’s? We are seeking volunteers to facilitate support groups, deliver community education, and serve on planning committees for fundraising events such as The Longest Day® and Walk to End Alzheimer’s®. Q. Are we close to finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease? Alzheimer’s dementia has no cure. There is a worldwide effort to find ways to treat the disease, delay its onset, and prevent it from developing. Gains have been made in the understanding of the basic biology underlying Alzheimer’s. There is also evidence that people can reduce risk through lifestyle choices, including participating in regular activity and maintaining good heart health.

TVHIGHLIGHTS

STONEWALL

This June marks the 50th anniversary of Stonewall. American Experience explores what happened when police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City on June 28, 1969. The streets erupted into violent protests that lasted for six days and marked a major turning point in the modern gay civil rights movement. Immediately following this American Experience, WXXI is pleased to present a short film Don’t Define Me by filmmaker and Rochester resident Don Casper. The short follows artist Charmaine Wheatley as she shares intimate moments with people affected by HIV, creating watercolor portraits that capture their image, thoughts, feelings, joys and challenges.

SEASON 6

ON MASTERPIECE SUNDAYS AT 9 P.M. BEGINNNING JUNE 16 ON WXXI-TV

HOLD THE SUNSET SATURDAYS AT 9:30 P.M., BEGINNING JUNE 29 ON WXXI-TV

Alison Steadman plays Edith, whose dream of retirement to the sun with her long-term suitor Phil (John Cleese) are shattered when her 50-year-old son Roger (Jason Watkins) arrives home, seeking to recapture his boyhood happiness.

Shaun Evans sports a new look as DS Endeavour Morse in season 6 of the detective drama Endeavour, the popular prequel to the long-running Inspector Morse series. Evans will also be putting his directorial mark on the show, heading behind the camera for the second 90-minute episode of the series. His character will be facing new challenges, with Morse having started a new role as a uniformed officer at the Woodstock police department and embracing the fashion of the period by growing a moustache. MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY, 2-4PM ON AM 1370 Supreme Court rulings. Breaking news. Thoughtful interviews. Here & Now reflects the fluid world of news as it’s happening in the middle of the day, with timely, smart and in-depth news, interviews and conversation. Co-hosted by award-winning journalists Robin Young and Jeremy Hobson, the show’s daily lineup includes interviews with newsmakers, NPR reporters, editors and bloggers, innovators and artists from across the U.S. and around the globe.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:

ME, THE REFUGEE SUNDAY, JUNE 2 AT 8 P.M. ON AM 1370

Reporter Sahar Zand became an Iranian refugee at the age of 12. It was a devastating experience for Sahar, her sister and her mother, who had to leave after her father got into political trouble with the regime. From months of limbo in a Danish refugee center, to days on the run across Europe, to life in the United Kingdom, Sahar explores the complex roles, deceptions and sacrifices she and her female family members experienced during those often desperate days.

LITTLE MUSIC PURPLE RAIN SATURDAY, JUNE 8 AT 8:30 P.M. I TICKETS: $7

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to give to this thing called Purple Rain. Released in 1984, Albert Magnoli’s pseudo-biopic introduced audiences to the Minneapolis music scene and the royal subject who presided over it. Prince burst upon the screen riding a motorcycle and a purple-tinted wave of popularity. He came to play his music loud, scream his lyrics and seduce with impunity.

EVA: A-7063 SCREENING WITH

EVA KOR and FILMMAKER TED GREEN

SUNDAY, JUNE 16 AT THE JCC ROCHESTER, 1200 ELMWOOD AVE. DOORS OPEN AT 6:30 P.M. PROGRAM BEGINS AT 7 P.M. WXXI is pleased to bring holocaust survivor Eva Mozes Kor and and film producer Ted Green to Rochester for a special presentation of EVA: A-7063, which premiered on WXXI-TV in May. The screening will be followed by a discussion and meet and greet with Eva and Ted. Narrated by Hollywood icon Ed Asner, EVA: A-7063 recounts the incredible true story of an Auschwitz survivor’s journey to forgiveness and healing. At the age of 10, Eva Mozes Kor fought to stay alive inside the concentration camp where she and her twin sister Miriam endured cruel experiments devised by Nazi doctor Josef Mengele. After decades of torment and pain following her liberation, she decided to use her experiences as a teaching tool for other generations. It reveals her hidden pain, unbridled rage and unextinguished love for humanity that transformed her into an international spokeswoman followed by millions. EVA MOZES KOR, CREDIT: MIKA BROWN
