LAST AT BAT SUNDAY, JUNE 21 AT 1 PM ON WXXI-TV

WXXI and the Rochester Red Wings have teamed up to offer this special Father’s Day broadcast. For almost 70 years Silver Stadium was the home of the Rochester Red Wings. When the last game was played in September of 1996 between the Red Wings and the Ottawa Lynx, WXXI was there to capture it. Hosted by former Red Wings broadcaster Pete Weber and author, media host and columnist Curt Smith, Last at Bat shares heart-felt memories of life long fans and players of the past. While Rochester is missing its beloved team, we are honored to bring you this baseball time capsule. PHOTO: PROVIDED BY THE RED WINGS

•••••••••••••••••••••••• “ WXXI has been a very important part of my life since I started attending Saint John Fisher College back in 1966. WXXI has been my constant companion through the years and I have been most happy to support you.” —Father William Laird

“ I began donating when my children were very young. I was not employed at that time and making that first small donation was a big decision. My son loved Sesame Street and The Electric Company. He learned to read at age 3, amazing! I give the credit for that to watching WXXI, with a little extra coaching from me. It still makes me smile.” —Tarry from Canandaigua

THANKS FOR THE KIND WORDS Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we have received such lovely messages from our listeners and viewers. We thought we’d share a few of them with you.

“ My husband and I are currently in Arizona for the winter. The current pandemic has caused us to delay our return home to Canandaigua until probably June. We watch/stream the NewsHour every day. Masterpiece, too, is a favorite. We long to be home, but since it’s difficult to travel at this point in time we rely on public tv and radio to keep us happy and sane.”

“ We have 91.5 FM, 1370 AM and channel 21 as our daily companions. We’re grateful for that and appreciate the extra efforts of all staff who make it happen so ‘normally’!” —Priscilla Petersen

—Patricia and John Stocker

“ I lived in Rochester from 1982-1988 and loved WXXI Classical FM. I just moved to the Philadelphia area from New Zealand and was pleased to discover that I could listen to WXXI on my smart speaker. It’s as great as ever. Thanks.” —Virginia Langmuir

“ We are currently caught up in WORLD ON FIRE with its great cast and engaging story line. Our expectations are always high—and always met—because WXXI and PBS always deliver.” —Sharon Salluzzo

DEAR FRIEND, As I write this letter, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to be an unprecedented crisis. I hope that our work keeping the community well informed with the latest official information is of comfort. We are proud of the many ways that WXXI is helping our community to weather this emergency.

Norm Silverstein

For example, WXXI News is doing an incredible job in covering the coronavirus and how it has affected our community. This includes the daily conversations on Connections with Evan Dawson, coverage of Governor Cuomo’s briefings, our LIVE Forums on WXXI-TV, and our daily news reports from the front lines. In fact, in the last month, four of our local news stories on COVID-19 have run nationally on NPR. I hope you agree that our dedicated reporters have been doing exceptional work. It should come as no surprise that WXXI News recently received the coveted Edward R. Murrow Award for their first collaborative news story with CITY Newspaper. Congratulations to WXXI News host/reporter Beth Adams, WXXI News photojournalist/ videographer Max Schulte, and CITY Newspaper editor David Andreatta. They were all recognized for their investigative reporting on the allegations of abuse of a former paperboy by a supervisor at the Democrat & Chronicle a number of years ago. It was not an easy story for any reporter to cover, yet the team handled it with great sensitivity and professionalism. We are also proud of the additional educational programming that WXXI is providing to the community with our “Learn At Home” broadcast schedule. And, our Education Team continues to provide connected learning resources for educators and caregivers to utilize with students while watching the broadcasts. We’re helping young people stay engaged and involved, as we work to bridge the gap until schools are able to open again. I know that we are all struggling for some normalcy as we enter summer. For many, this means having a hot dog and watching a Rochester Red Wings game. With that in mind, WXXI-TV is pleased to present Last at Bat on Father’s Day, June 21 at 1:00 p.m. This WXXI production originally aired in 1996 to commemorate the last regular season game at Silver Stadium. This nostalgic look back not only features the entire game, but is preceded by a closing ceremony celebration featuring a who’s who of Rochester baseball including Joe Altobelli, Harry Walker, and Naomi Silver. Finally, we lost a pioneer of public broadcasting in the passing of Bill Pearce last month. Bill, who served as WXXI’s President for 26 years, passed away at the age of 95. Under Bill’s leadership the station launched WXXI-FM, acquired AM 1370 – which became our main news station – and introduced Reachout Radio to the community. During his tenure at WXXI, the station earned numerous educational television awards and a Peabody Award. He was a great man who early on saw the value of public media. He will be missed. Be sure to tune in to WXXI-TV on Sunday, June 21 at 5:30 p.m. for Bill Pearce: A Tribute. It will repeat June 26 at 8:30 p.m. and June 27 at 1:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV. Stay safe, stay healthy, and continue to follow the news and get official information on WXXI and CITY Newspaper on-line. Sincerely,

Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org | @normWXXI

Q&A with a WXXI COMMUNITY PARTNER

VERONICA DASHER

MANAGER OF RG&E COMMUNITY OUTREACH & DEVELOPMENT

NICOLE LICATA GRANT

DIRECTOR OF THE AVANGRID FOUNDATION

THE AVANGRID FOUNDATION is a private foundation that receives funding in part from AVANGRID companies, such as NYSEG and RG&E. As an independent 501 (c)(3) they address challenges such as disaster preparedness, climate action and human rights across the United States. They are committed to actionable social investments with a focus on enhancing education, the environment, arts and culture and basic needs for underserved populations. WXXI connects with Nicole Licata Grant, Director of The Avangrid Foundation and Veronica Dasher, Manager of RG&E Community Outreach & Development to learn more about their philanthropic mission. What prompted the Foundation to make celebrating the centennial of women’s right to vote a focus in 2020? Beyond being a historic milestone for gender parity, the 19th Amendment speaks to a broad effort of championing more equitable human rights and bringing diverse voices to the table. Plus, we have a personal connection: the suffrage movement has strong historical roots in the communities we serve and call home, especially in New York where our history spans more than a century too. Can you share some of the initiatives planned for the year to recognize the contributions of women? The Foundation is investing in partnerships that will celebrate culture, heritage and education inspired by women’s suffrage. We are collaborating with various organizations on a series of voter education events and celebrations aligned with the 200th birthday of Susan B. Anthony. As part of our ongoing work, we are investing in organizations that serve women, focus on diversity and inclusion, and are led by women or persons who identify as women. Can you describe how you are using social media to connect with the community? You can find the Foundation on several platforms. Our favorite is our blog: www.avanewsblog.com! Here we do longer form story telling that invites people to learn more about the “why” and “how” behind our philanthropy and highlights the incredible partnerships we have. We like to say that we “leverage our platforms for good.” What are some of the Foundation’s other priorities currently? Investing in sustainable communities – from preserving culture, reducing barriers to opportunity, to protecting the environment. In New York, providing safe and reliable natural gas and electric service is AVANGRID’s primary goal and we offer so much more to the communities we serve. Working alongside NYSEG and RG&E helps leverage the innovation, human capacity and reach of AVANGRID as a collective force for good. And this is not just goodwill - it is good business for all. WITH STEVEN GUNDRY, MD

This special offers a fresh perspective on an existential question: how can we live a long life and grow old while still enjoying the physical and mental qualities of being young?

AND SHE COULD BE NEXT

This two-part film tells the story of a defiant movement of women of color, transforming politics from the ground up by fighting for a truly reflective democracy. Part 2 airs Tuesday, June 30 at 9:30 PM. PHOTO CREDIT: COURTESY OF GRACE LEE AND MARJAN SAFINIA

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:

AMERICA AMPLIFIED:

LIFE, COMMUNITY, AND COVID-19 SATURDAYS AT 3PM ON AM 1370

This live two-hour talk show invites Americans to share their diverse experiences during the coronavirus crisis. Each week, two public radio stations from different parts of the country co-host the program on a rotating basis. Framed by the latest news, the topical issues discussed allow us to step back and gain a sense that we’re all in this together. This call-in program provides insight into how communities are responding to this crisis and charting a new future.

RADIOLAB MOVES TO SUNDAYS AT 12PM ON AM 1370

14

A two-time Peabody Award-winner, Radiolab is an investigation told through sounds and stories, and centered around one big idea. In the Radiolab world, information sounds like music, science, and culture colliding. Hosted by Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich, the show is designed for listeners who demand skepticism, but HOSTS JAD ABUMRAD (LEFT) AND appreciate wonder. Please note: Live from Here, which filled this time slot, airs on ROBERT KRULWICH (RIGHT) WRUR-FM on Saturdays at 6 p.m.

PROGRAM UPDATE: The 2019-2020 broadcast season began on May 11, but due to the cancellation of the final four concerts of the live season, Classical 91.5 had to make alternate plans in order to present a full season of the RPO for Rochester audiences. Since this season is Maestro Ward Stare’s last season, he has chosen four encore programs from his tenure in Rochester. Each encore program will include brief comments from Ward regarding why he chose that particular program to revisit. (July 20-August 10)
