DEAR FRIEND, March is “Women’s History Month” and we are proud to bring you the television premiere of Her Voice Carries on Friday, March 1 at 10 p.m. on WXXI-TV. Produced by Rochester filmmakers David Marshall and Christine Christopher, the documentary shares the Norm Silverstein journey of international mural artist Sarah Rutherford as she collects the stories of five extraordinary Rochester women who have worked to lift others’ voices in our community – and paints murals that honor their work! Classical 91.5 will also honor Women’s History Month by highlighting the musical gifts of women. Learn more about our plans online at WXXI.org/wh. March is also “Music in Our Schools Month,” a national celebration designed to engage music educators, students, and communities to promote the benefits of music education programs in schools. Classical 91.5 will join in the celebration by again partnering with the Rochester Education Foundation to collect musical instruments and supplies for Rochester City students. Watch for special arts segments and a curated web page on Classical915.org, where you can share a story or memory of a music teacher who made a difference in your life. I’m pleased to share that PBS president Paula Kerger announced some great new programming at the Winter/Spring Television Critics Association Press Tour. Here’s a “heads up” on what to expect from PBS and WXXI over the next few months:
RECONSTRUCTION: AMERICA AFTER THE CIVIL WAR l TUESDAYS, APRIL 9 AND 16 Executive produced and hosted by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., this twopart series explores the transformative years when the nation struggled to rebuild itself in the face of profound loss, massive destruction, and revolutionary social change. AMERICAN SPRING: LIVE ON PBS I MONDAY, APRIL 29-WEDNESDAY, MAY 1 An unprecedented Nature event, this series is broadcast live from iconic locations across North America – varied ecosystems ranging from the Rockies to the Everglades, from inner-city parks to remote wilderness preserves. In anticipation of this event, WXXI is bringing in two producers of Nature to share some of their favorite clips and behind-thescenes stories. Keep tuned for details on how you can participate! KEN BURNS’ COUNTRY MUSIC I SEPTEMBER 2019 This sweeping, multi-episode series explores the questions, “What is country music?” “Where did it come from?” while focusing on the biographies of the fascinating characters who created it. Those exciting, upcoming programs – along with your ongoing favorites from PBS and NPR – are made possible through your membership. Your pledge of support to WXXI allows us to provide the sort of thoughtful and original programming that makes us worthy of your investment. Thank you! Best regards,
Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org | @normWXXI

NEWS&EVENTS
Q&A with a WXXI CORPORATE SPONSOR SHEPARD FORD opened its doors in 1948 under Theodore and Richard Shepard. In 1980, family members Theodore and Tom took over to continue the Shepard legacy in the Greater Rochester area. Sales Manager Gary Marble shares more about Shepard Ford and the auto industry. Q. What are the benefits of working with a local dealer versus buying online? We have cars and trucks on the lot to test drive and we’re able to discuss what the customers’ comforts and needs might be. In addition, we offer service and various packages after the sale. Q. How has Shepard changed its buying experience over time? We love that customers have the convenience of comparing cars online. Shepard Ford’s website provides auto shoppers with images and descriptions of the vehicles they can test drive, and potentially purchase, at our dealership. Q. Thoughts on autonomous cars? We’re always looking at the future. I’m still waiting for cars that fly – I remember The Jetsons when I was a young boy! Q. Favorite new car feature? Safety is the goal. Lane-Keeping System keeps the vehicle inside its lane, Blind Spot Information System detects vehicles in the bling spot when changing lanes monitoring, and Forward-Collision Warning alerts the driver to take action when a collision may be imminent. Q. What does Ford on a national level mean by expanding to be both an auto and a mobility company? Ford has been a long-time partner in the area of mobility. They have programs for people with disabilities to adapt vehicles to fit individual needs. They also have additional rebates for customers who qualify. Tenor Javier Camarena and soprano Pretty Yende team up for a feast of bel canto vocal fireworks—including the show-stopping tenor aria “Ah! Mes amis,” with its nine high Cs. Alessandro Corbelli and Maurizio Muraro trade off as the comic Sergeant Sulpice, with mezzosoprano Stephanie Blythe as the outlandish Marquise of Berkenfield. Enrique Mazzola conducts.
Wagner’s visionary initial installment of the Ring Cycle depicts the original sin of the theft of the sacred golden treasure, the vanity of the gods, the greed of the Nibelungen, the fratricide of the giants, and the building of Valhalla. Bass-baritone Greer Grimsley sings the role of Wotan, the conflicted lord of the gods. Mezzosoprano Jamie Barton sings her first Wagner role at the Met as Wotan’s embattled wife, Fricka.
Baritone Ambrogio Maestri brings his larger-than-life portrayal of the title role back for the first time since his Met role debut in the 2013 – 14 season. Robert Carsen’s insightful production—which moves the action to postwar England in the 1950s— features an exceptional cast that includes soprano Ailyn Pérez as Alice Ford and soprano Golda Schultz as Nannetta.
When mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča and tenor Roberto Alagna joined forces for a new production of Carmen at the Met, the results were electrifying. Now this star duo reunites for another sensual French opera when they open the season in the title roles of Saint-Saëns’s biblical epic Samson et Dalila. Darko Tresnjak makes his Met debut directing a vivid, seductive staging. Sir Mark Elder, former Music Director of the RPO, conducts the first new Met production of the work in 20 years.
In what is expected to be a Wagnerian event for the ages, soprano Christine Goerke plays Brünnhilde, Wotan’s willful warrior daughter, who loses her immortality in opera’s most famous act of filial defiance. Tenor Stuart Skelton and soprano EvaMaria Westbroek play the incestuous twins Siegmund and Sieglinde. Greer Grimsley sings Wotan. Philippe Jordan conducts.
