SESAME STREET’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 17 AT 7PM ON WXXI-TV

It’s an event 50 years in the making as Sesame Street celebrates its 50th Anniversary. We’re celebrating the world’s most iconic street with all our furry friends and some very special guests including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Patti LaBelle, Sterling K. Brown, and many more! To mark the special event, the whole neighborhood comes together to take a photo under the Sesame Street sign—but the sign is missing! While Elmo and friends search for the sign, Joe takes a look back at 50 years of Sesame Street memories, and everyone soon realizes that Sesame Street isn’t just a sign or a street—it’s a place where everybody is welcome, learning is fun, and all kinds of monsters, birds, and humans come together to form lifelong friendships. Repeats 11/19 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV.

AMERICA’S TEST KITCHEN 20TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 24 AT 8 P.M. ON WXXI-TV

To celebrate 20 years of the most-watched cooking show on public television, America’s Test Kitchen fans around the country voted for their all-time favorite recipes from the series. The results are presented in the America’s Test Kitchen 20th Anniversary Special, as cast members including Bridget Lancaster, Julia Collin Davison, Jack Bishop and Adam Ried count down the series’ 20 most popular recipes and look back on moments from the show’s two decades on air. Emotional, nostalgic, and (as always) filled to the brim with practical home cooking takeaway, this delicious hour of television features four brand-new recipe segments, new testimonials from every member of the cast (including four of the original Season 1 cast members), behind-the-scenes access to the series that reveals all-new sausage-making secrets, and playful archives from the show’s extensive 20-season catalog. Repeats Tuesday, November 26 at 5 p.m. on WXXI-TV.

DEAR FRIEND, I’m pleased to share the news that Betty Strasenburgh, a long-time friend and supporter of WXXI, was recently honored with the WXXI “President’s Award” for 2019. Betty is well-known for her support Norm Silverstein of arts and culture in our community and she was a driving force behind the stunning renovation of the Eastman Theatre. In recognition of all she has done for WXXI, I was pleased to present the President’s Award to Betty at our annual Associates Event. At the event, more than 150 people heard about the importance of local public radio stations – and local news and music – from long-time All Things Considered host Robert Siegel. We also announced that our radio studios will be named “The Betty Strasenburgh Studios” in recognition of her support for public media. On a related note, you may have heard that we have hired noted arts reporter Jeff Spevak to serve as lead reporter on WXXI News’ new Arts and Life Desk. Thanks to the support of Betty and so many others, we are in the unique position to enhance our existing arts and culture services and expand arts reporting in our newsroom – our investment in CITY Newspaper demonstrates just that. Again, the thanks go to our donors. They know that the arts have widespread social impact and make a difference in the quality of life in our region. A study done by the Americans for the Arts proves that arts and culture are a driving force in a community’s economy. They help to boost revenue, increase tourism, and create jobs. The study also found that many believe the arts improve the quality of life and are important to local businesses and the economy. We couldn’t agree more. Finally, as you can see on the front cover, we’re celebrating the 50th anniversary of Sesame Street with an hour-long special Sunday, November 17 at 7 p.m. on WXXI-TV. I hope you have the chance to tune in and that you have the opportunity to attend our Cookie Monster Bash at the Central Library on November 2 and our Sesame Street Party for Grown-Ups at WXXI on November 10. To learn more, visit WXXI.org/sesame. From all of us at WXXI, the Little Theatre and CITY Newspaper, have a Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you enjoy the specials we have planned around the holiday on WXXI-TV and radio, as well as great movies at the Little Theatre. Best regards,

Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org | @normWXXI

NEWS&EVENTS

Q&A with a WXXI CORPORATE SPONSOR HAPPY EARTH TEA was established in 2011 by Niraj Lama and his wife Mary Boland. After

several years of selling fresh organic teas at local markets and online, they opened Leaf Tea Bar in the South Wedge. Leaf Tea Bar offers the experience of expertly and traditionally steeped teas from around the world and a tranquil space to sip, relax and maybe even learn a thing or two. WXXI connects with Co-Owner Niraj Lama to learn more. Q. How did you become so knowledgeable about tea? I’m from the Darjeeling tea growing region of India and spent much of my life around tea gardens prior to moving to America. Due to this rich heritage, I’ve always been curious to learn more about teas from around the world. Over the past many years, I have become very knowledgeable about sourcing high quality organic tea. I work directly with Organic Certified tea gardens, visiting them periodically to check on crops, taste teas and select only the best to share with our customers. Q. What makes Rochester a great home for Leaf Tea Bar? The people here are very friendly and open to embracing tea traditions from around the world. Plus, hot tea always helps during the cold weather! Q. Can you share some of the events and classes offered at Leaf Tea Bar? Every month we offer tea classes presenting the history of tea, manufacturing processes, steeping tips and of course tastings of a variety of fresh, organic and rare teas. Q. Future plans for Happy Earth Tea and Leaf Tea Bar? Due to the generous support from our customers, there is a demand for more locations. We are currently in the process of looking for a second location. We also plan to grow our online presence to reach a broader audience. Q. Your drink of choice? And the secret to a great cup of tea? My favorite cup, and a little taste of home, is Darjeeling spring tea. Mary’s favorite cup is Roch-ChaChai, a special blend we crafted to honor the warm people of Rochester. The right water temperature and steeping time makes a great cup of tea. Q. Holiday gift recommendations for tea lovers? Lovely tea gift sets featuring our best-sellers, teaware and gift cards.

BETTY STRASENBURGH RECEIVES THE “PRESIDENT’S AWARD” WXXI President Norm Silverstein presented Betty with the President’s Award, which honors an individual who exemplifies the WXXI mission of public service, makes a contribution to WXXI programming, and demonstrates exceptional commitment, creativity, and leadership. 4

WXXI honored community leader and Honorary Trustee Betty Strasenburgh with the 2019 WXXI “President’s Award” at the station’s annual Associates Society event on September 27. Nearly 130 WXXI supporters attended the gala event at the Century Club, where Robert Siegel, former senior host of NPR’s All Things Considered, spoke about the current state of broadcast journalism and the importance of local stations like WXXI who value local news. Siegel also paid tribute to NPR’s national political correspondent, Cokie Roberts, who recently passed away. A WXXI member for 45 years, Betty has been a strong advocate for public media in Rochester. A major donor, a campaign supporter and advisor, a production funder and a member of the legacy society, she is one of WXXI’s greatest champions. Passionate about news and arts, Betty understands that having a forum for civil discourse and a place for arts to thrive are critical to the health and well-being of the Rochester community. Because of her long time, generous support, WXXI will be naming their radio wing “The Betty Strasenburgh Studios.”
