WXXI NEWS COVERAGE

FRONTLINE: CHASING HEROIN

WXXI News continues its coverage of the opioid crisis. Stories can be heard on AM 1370 and WRUR-FM 88.5 throughout the week, and available to listen and read online at WXXINews.org.

Frontline looks at America’s heroin crisis in a fresh and provocative light - telling the stories of individual addicts, but also illuminating the epidemic’s years-in-the-making social context, deeply examining shifts in drug policy, and exploring what happens when addiction is treated like a public health issue, not a crime. Also airs 10/20 at 10pm on WXXI-TV.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 15 - FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19 ON AM 1370 AND WRUR-FM 88.5 DURING MORNING EDITION AND ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

CONNECTIONS WITH EVAN DAWSON

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 9 FROM 12 P.M. TO 2 P.M. ON AM 1370, WRUR-FM, WEOS-FM, AND WXXINEWS.ORG

In anticipation of the October 15 week of opioid coverage, Connection presents this special edition with a live studio audience. Host Evan Dawson will be joined by local leaders in healthcare and law enforcement who will provide an update on the state of the crisis in the Rochester and Finger Lakes region. We’ll also hear stories of recovery. To learn more and reserve your seat, visit WXXINews.org.

OPIOIDS FROM INSIDE

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 16 AT 4 P.M. ON WXXI-WORLD

This WXXI, Blue Sky Project, and PBS WORLD production follows the journey of three women, all mothers, who have served time in New York State jails for opioid-related crimes. Also airs 10/20 at 6:30pm on WXXI-TV.

NOVA: ADDICTION

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17 AT 9 P.M. ON WXXI-TV

NOVA joins scientists and sufferers alike as they probe the mysteries of addiction. They are discovering that addiction is not simply a lack of willpower; drug abuse produces significant chemical changes in the brain… changes that are hard to control, and hard to reverse. Also airs 10/18 at 7pm and 10/19 at 12am, 8am, and 2pm on WXXI-WORLD. PHOTO CREDIT: DAVID BUCHAN / VARIETY / SHUTTERSTOCK

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18 AT 9:30 P.M. ON WXXI-TV

SECOND OPINION: ADDICTION TO PAIN MEDICATION SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20 AT 3 P.M. ON WXXI-TV

What usually starts innocently enough as taking pain medication appropriately prescribed by a doctor, can turn into a deadly addiction for some. Jennifer Matesa shares her story of the darkest days of her addiction to her recovery. Also airs 10/17 at 12:30am on WXXI-TV.

OVERDOSE: INSIDE THE EPIDEMIC SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20 AT 5 P.M. ON WXXI-TV

In this Second Opinion special Mary and Joe Mullin courageously share their son’s story of opioid and heroin addiction. PHOTO CREDIT: NIC MINETOR

DO NO HARM: THE OPIOID EPIDEMIC SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21 FROM 1-4 P.M. ON WXXI-TV

This three-part series exposes how this catastrophic man-made public health crisis began. It features poignant stories from recovering addicts and families with losses; reveals the insights of leading doctors and law enforcement officers; reports the failure of drug companies to take appropriate responsibility for the crisis; traces what monies legislators have received; and focuses on those who fight back with effective, long-lasting treatment programs. Please note: Part 1 of this three-part series also airs on 10/15 at 9pm on WXXI-TV.

DEAR FRIEND, I hope you were able to join us for the recent WXXI Open House. If so, you may have heard about our upcoming programming and news initiative called New York’s Opioid Crisis.

Norm Silverstein

You may remember the Opioid Crisis: The Ripple Effect reporting series that our news team produced last April in partnership with several major media stations, one in Portland, Oregon, the other in Cleveland, Ohio. Since then we’ve seen a greater awareness about this epidemic that affects whole communities, not just those suffering from addiction. It has an effect on our economy, education system, justice system, and neighborhoods. But our work to raise awareness and connect our community to resources is not done, which is why this October, WXXI and PBS stations across New York State are dedicating a week of programming and reporting to the opioid crisis. New York’s Opioid Crisis runs Monday, October 15 through Sunday, October 21. Our TV department has scheduled more than a dozen specials and documentaries addressing the issue, including a Frontline special and our own Second Opinion and Need to Know episodes. Our news department will produce several in-depth reports, and Connections with Evan Dawson will host his talk show from Studio A before a live audience. (See the page on the left to learn more, and you can visit: WXXI.org/opioids-prog.) This October we’ll also be hosting a listening party using our awardwinning podcast series EXITED. Produced by the WXXI News’ Inclusion Desk, the podcast shares the journey of eight young people with disabilities as they transition into adulthood. The first of four EXITED listening parties planned throughout the year will focus on the different tracks available to special education students in high school. It will be hosted at our station on October 4. (More information about the listening party is on the inside back cover of this magazine.) October 4 is also the premiere date for Season 15 of our national health care series, Second Opinion, airing that evening at 8:30p.m. on WXXI-TV. The new season tackles complex health issues including alcoholism, biologics in orthopedics, and HIV. The HIV episode (airing in November) features Olympic diver Greg Louganis, who was diagnosed with HIV in the late 1980s. October promises to be a busy month of programming with a lot of important issues on radio, television and on-line. Thank you for your support. It’s what makes our service to the community possible, and we certainly couldn’t do it without you! Sincerely,

Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org | @normWXXI

NEWS&EVENTS FRANK ON THE COVER OF WXXI’S AUGUST 1989 PROGRAM GUIDE, A SPOOF ON PLEDGE DRIVES.

Q&A WITH A WXXI UNDERWRITER Located in Victor, GANONDAGAN STATE HISTORIC SITE is dedicated to sharing knowledge about the Seneca and their relationship to the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy. Spanning 569 acres, Ganondagan is the original site of a 17th century Seneca town that existed there peacefully more than 350 years ago. Today, visitors can enjoy hiking trails, a full-size Seneca Bark Longhouse, and the Seneca Art & Culture Center. WXXI connects with G. Peter Jemison, historic site manager, to learn more about Ganondagan and the Haudenosaunee.

Q. What are the defining principles of the Haudenosaunee? The message of peace, power and righteousness.

Q. Tell us about the Iroquois White Corn Project. G. PETER JEMISON,

HISTORIC SITE MANAGER

The goal is to get our people eating our traditional food by making it available ready to cook. We also want to encourage our farmers to grow the corn so we can process it and bring it back into the communities. In addition to many community building programs such as annual husking bees and community meals, the project also acts as a job readiness program.

Q. How is the design of the Seneca Art & Culture Center and its landscape significant? Mirroring a traditional Seneca Bark Longhouse, the Center is built on an east to west axis, has high ceilings and skylights similar to smoke holes. The Center houses permanent and changing exhibits; our current exhibit is “Hodinöhsö:ni’ Women from the time of Creation.”

Q. Ganondagan appears in PBS’ Native America. Tell us about its involvement in the production. The filmmakers were interested in the message that united the Haudenosaunee people, the Great Law of Peace. They wanted to learn about the roles of the three individuals who were responsible for sharing the message, the principles, and to understand what happened when the Seneca, Cayuga, Oneida, Onondaga and Mohawk accepted the message of peace. Native America premieres 10/23 at 9pm on WXXI-TV.

Q. Anything else you’d like readers to know? Friends of Ganondagan is a not-for-profit organization and through community support, provides yearround programming, manages the Iroquois White Corn Project, and the Center’s gift shop. Upcoming events: 10/6-7th – Women of Ganondagan, 11/11 – Canandaigua Treaty Commemoration, 11/17 – Wampum Bracelet Workshop, 12/8 – Native American Winter Arts Festival

Frank Calandra received the Charles M. Wise Volunteer of the Year award

at our Volunteer Recognition Event. This award is given to an individual who exemplifies the same enthusiasm and dedication to the station that Charles had. Frank has been volunteering in many capacities for WXXI for approximately 35 years. We had the opportunity to talk with him about his long history with the station.

How did you get involved with WXXI in the first place?

A group I belonged to was asked to take pledges during a TV membership drive. I thought, “Sounds like fun!” It was.

Share a couple of your favorite volunteer stories

Whenever volunteering for a radio drive, I always chose the 6am spot during Simon Pontin’s shift on Classical 91.5. Back then, the phone banks were right inside Simon’s studio. When he put a record on, we could talk, and Simon would always join in the conversations. He’d have us laughing, and then when a call came in or the music stopped, we all had to stifle our laughter. WXXI’s Auction was a huge event years ago, broadcasting live, with a high excitement level. Once someone called in a rather high bid, but would only place it if a certain talent got a pie-in-the-face on the air. So they did it, taking him by surprise and he laughed harder than anyone. Sometimes volunteering leads to opportunities, like when I met Bruce Austin while assigned to WXXI’s Appraisal Fair. I shared that I enjoyed old cameras and was part of a club that hosted the PhotoHistory Symposium. Bruce had been to it, and was disappointed when I told him we stopped hosting them. That’s when he got his employer, RIT, to take over the event, and it was a huge success.

Tell us a little about yourself

I spent many years as a special machine designer & manufacturing engineer for Rochester companies. That led to a decade of working for design software companies in the San Francisco Bay area and NYC. I retired in 2001. I live in Webster with my wife Karen, who recently joined me in retirement. We have two grown children – my daughter is a Senior Associate Registrar at Temple University in Philadelphia and my son manages a heavy equipment service and rental business in Sarasota. SEASON 15 AIRS THURSDAYS AT 8:30PM ON WXXI-TV BEGINNING OCTOBER 4 Season 15 of WXXI’s national health care series, Second Opinion, premieres this month with 10 new episodes, two of which include panelist who are Olympic Gold Medalists! Featuring field productions, a live studio audience, and passionate panel discussion, now more than ever, Second Opinion sets itself apart by being a trusted and accurate source for medical information. This season the series tackles tough topics like teen suicide, pain management, alcoholism, and HIV. Second Opinion is the only regularly scheduled medical program on public television. In each half-hour episode, the host engages a panel of medical professionals and lay people in honest, in-depth discussions about life-changing medical decisions. Intriguing, real-life medical cases are presented to professionals from different medical specialties from all over

the country. The experts grapple with diagnosis and treatment options to give viewers access to accurate medical information and an understanding of complex health issues. Second Opinion’s season kicks off with its Precision Medicine episode on Thursday, October 4 at 8:30 p.m. One in eight women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime and most of them will have no family history of the disease. Precision medicine helps determine the most effective treatment for individual types of cancer and helps avoid the risks and side effects of unnecessary treatment. Produced in partnership with the University of Rochester Medical Center and West 175 Productions, Second Opinion is made possible with support from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA). NORM & COMPANY:

DR. ALICE HOLLOWAY YOUNG FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5 AT 8:30PM ON WXXI-TV

Educational pioneer Dr. Alice Holloway Young joins WXXI President Norm Silverstein on this episode of Norm & Company. Dr. Young is a Founding Trustee & Board Emerita at Monroe Community College and has been a leader in the fight for greater equality in education. On the program Dr. Young shares what it was like growing up on a farm in the rural South, her role in bringing the UrbanSuburban program to Rochester schools, how she became involved in MCC, and what she hopes her legacy will be. Norm & Company is hosted by WXXI President Norm Silverstein, who speaks with long-time Rochesterians as they recount fascinating stories about their lives in the community. This episode repeats Saturday, October 6 at 6:30 pm on WXXI-TV.

Travel journalist Samantha Brown (pictured), BBC presenter Chris Packham and wildlife cinematographer Bob Poole host this multi-platform television experience from alongside Squam Lake, New Hampshire. Similar in format to PBS’ Big Blue Live and Wild Alaska Live, the new series includes a mix of live feeds and pre-taped footage from across New England. This event focuses on cultural traditions and historical sites in addition to local wildlife and the colorful gold and red landscapes in the region that’s best known for them. To accomplish this, local experts in food, wildlife, music, literature and history will join the trio of hosts each night to showcase characteristics special to New England.

UNRESOLVED: TRUMP & U.S. NATIONAL SECURITY

COMBATING EXTREMIST IDEOLOGY SINCE 9/11

For the United States, tensions are rising with both allies and adversaries. Rogue states are racing to master new technologies and create weapons of mass destruction. And faith in international institutions is seemingly deteriorating. What does this all mean for U.S. national security? Five esteemed foreign policy thought leaders will argue for or against a number of motions revolving around some of America’s most pressing national security.

It’s been 17 years since 9/11, and 14 years since the 9/11 Commission released its recommendations on how to prevent future attacks. While much of the focus has been on military solutions, the commission also made recommendations on how to use diplomacy and soft power to prevent the growth of extremist ideology abroad. In this episode, we take a look at those recommendations, how the Bush and Obama administrations worked to implement them, and what lies ahead for the future.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 7 AT 9PM

CRIME AND PUNISHMENT IN THE EMPIRE STATE Decades into harsh criminal justice sentencing guidelines mandated by bipartisan approved laws – New York State is left to manage a congested judicial process and clogged detainment facilities. This program takes a look back at how we got here, why the governor has prioritized reforms and what those involved in the justice system see as solutions.

WRUR-FM 88.5 Spotlight

CONGRATS TO GUMBO VARIATION’S RICK SIMPSON Rick Simpson, retired host of WRUR-FM’s Gumbo Variation, received the Golden Microphone award at WXXI and the Little Theatre’s Volunteer Recognition Event in late August. The Golden Microphone award recognized Rick’s long-term and invaluable service and dedication to WRUR. Rick’s love affair with radio started when he was 10 and his parents gave him one of those little 9-volt transistor radios for Christmas. In the late 60’s, he discovered FM radio and that cemented his love. He did college radio at Oneonta State on WONY and at Geneseo State’s WGSU for a total of 6 years. He longed for the opportunity to return to the airwaves and when he started working at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at RIT, he had the opportunity to do so on WITR. During the next few summers he also filled in on the All Weather Lunch on WRUR and was given his fulltime slot in 2010. Rick retired from hosting his show Gumbo Variations earlier this year, but still fills in occasionally for Open Tunings with Scott Regan.
