VAN DER VALK
ON MASTERPIECE
Amsterdam—city of bikes, boats, and bodies. At least, that’s the way steely-eyed cop Piet Van der Valk sees his murder-infested beat. Marc Warren stars as Van der Valk in this all-new, three-part series based on Nicolas Freeling’s legendary crime thrillers. Maimie McCoy co-stars as Van der Valk’s right-hand woman, Lucienne Hassell along with Luke Allen-Gale as the scruffy sergeant, Brad de Vries, and Elliot Barnes-Worrell as the squad’s brainy new guy, Job Cloovers. Together they face a trio of challenging cases that gives a new slant to Amsterdam’s renowned sophistication, for it appears that the city’s stylishness and toleration go hand in hand with murder. LOOK FOR YOUR PROGRAM LISTINGS GUIDE IN
Everyone loves a good comeback story, and we have one for you. When our media partner CITY was forced to suspend publication of its award-winning weekly newspaper in response to the economic fallout of the pandemic, it stopped the presses, but not the reporting. Now, CITY returns to newsstands in September with a monthly magazine that will feature all its signature coverage of our community and integrate this programming guide into its pages. That means this will be the last edition of Programs Listings as you know it. But don’t look at it as losing an old companion. Think of it as gaining a new look at the world around you. Next month, you’ll receive a copy of CITY that will contain a special section for WXXI. Just like the Program Listings, the section will highlight everything that’s happening in the WXXI family. You’ll find news about upcoming documentaries, PBS and NPR programs, specials on Classical 91.5, AM 1370, and WRUR-FM, goings on at the Little Theatre, and everything you need to know about the station. All of that will be wrapped into CITY with news, arts, and life coverage that ignites important conversations about topics that propel our community forward. Every issue of CITY will combine an array of news and commentary with a street-level look at the arts, music, food and drink, and culture that offers an enlightening, entertaining, and honest reflection of life in our community. WXXI acquired CITY under a for-profit subsidiary, Rochester Area Media Partners (RAMP), in 2019. Since then, CITY and WXXI News have worked closely together to expand and enhance their respective news offerings. The new CITY is another example of that collaboration that we think creates something special for our members and our community.

DEAR FRIEND, I hope you had an opportunity to view our latest WXXI documentary, Journeys Through the Finger Lakes. Our staff did a wonderful job of capturing the beauty and history of our region and we were proud to share it with our viewers. Our producers and editors worked hard to complete this program despite the coronavirus, Norm Silverstein even doing some of the editing work at home. If you need a lift, or just a reminder of the beautiful region we call home, Journeys Through the Finger Lakes is a welcome respite from COVID-19! This month, we have a lot of exciting news to share. Our production team will be back in studio to film Season 17 of Second Opinion, our television health care series aired by PBS stations throughout the nation. I’m pleased to share the news that award-winning journalist, bestselling author, and women’s health & wellness advocate, Joan Lunden, has been named the series’ new host. As one of America’s most recognized and trusted personalities, Joan exemplifies Second Opinion’s mission in providing highly credible health information to our audience. With Joan as the new host, Second Opinion with Joan Lunden will launch on PBS stations across the country this January. WXXI News and CITY News reporters continue to report on the impact of the pandemic and the effect it is having on our community (over a thousand locally-produced stories since mid-January). This month, our two departments come together for our newest WXXI Live Forum. Airing Tuesday, September 1 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV and AM 1370, this WXXI Live Forum will explore the re-opening of schools and what K-12 education will look like in the fall. We are excited that CITY News will be back in publication this month with the launch of a new monthly magazine. At the end of March, we had to make the difficult decision to suspend printing the weekly CITY Newspaper and transitioned all stories and reporting online to roccitynews.org. After a great deal of planning, CITY is back in print – only now with the integration of the WXXI Program Guide into the publication. Next month – and every month moving forward – you will receive CITY with a special section dedicated to WXXI, where we’ll share programming and event content you’ve enjoyed in the Program Guide for years. COVID-19 has forced us to work differently and to be creative – and this move to unify our efforts is the best way for us to maximize budgets and staff. WXXI looks forward to extending and strengthening our partnership with CITY and we know you’ll enjoy the stories, photography, and information arriving at your door each month. (You can find further details about the new publication on the opposite page.) While August brought coverage of the Democratic and Republican National Conventions, this month we bring you the first of three presidential debates from PBS NewsHour and NPR. President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden meet at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio on Tuesday, September 29 for their first debate. We’ll carry the debate live on WXXI-TV and AM 1370, starting at 9 p.m. I hope you had a good summer with friends and family. We are anxious for the opportunity to see you again in person at an event or movie (when it is safe to do so). In the meantime, thank you for your support. We couldn’t do all this without you! Best regards,
Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org | @normWXXI

Q&A with a WXXI COMMUNITY PARTNER THE GEORGE EASTMAN MUSEUM is the world’s oldest photography museum and one of the oldest film archives in the United States. Located on the historic estate of entrepreneur and philanthropist, George Eastman, the museum houses more than 400,000 photographs, 28,000 motion picture films, and the world’s preeminent collection of photographic and cinematographic technology. WXXI connects with Eliza Kozlowski, Senior Director of Marketing and Engagement, to learn more about the Museum’s recent reopening and extensive improvement projects.

Q. Can you tell us about the restoration and construction undertakings at the George Eastman Museum this year? With our recent reopening, we are thrilled to showcase the restoration and renovation of the historic Colonnade. This is currently the interior route between the main museum entrance and the historic mansion and gardens. However, the museum is also currently undertaking a major construction project to relocate the museum’s main entrance and create a new visitor center. We broke ground in January on the Thomas Tischer Visitor Center and expect construction to be complete in mid-October 2020. Q. What were the goals of this capital project and how do you think the transformations will improve experiences for visitors? The goal of the Colonnade project was to complete essential structural repairs and to provide a more hospitable experience for visitors, including enhanced views of the gardens! The location of the Thomas Tischer Visitor Center, next to the Dryden Theatre, is long overdue and will be more convenient, visible, welcoming, and accessible for guests. Included in the center are a new café and museum shop as well as a refurbished education and meeting hall. Q. Can you tell us about the George Eastman Bike Tours? We launched a new program last year to share George Eastman’s Rochester via bike tours. A nod to Eastman’s own love of cycling, the tours take riders to ten different locations related to his life and work. With onsite programs limited for the foreseeable future, these tours are a great way to gather safely outdoors while learning about our city! Q. Favorite item in the Museum’s collection? That’s like picking your favorite child! What I love most about our collections is that we’re able to share the complete story of a photograph or a film because we not only have the object but the technology that was used to create it. And in many cases the personal papers or voice recordings of the photographer or filmmaker. georgeeastmanmuseum eastmanmuseum EastmanMuseum To learn more about underwriting on WXXI, email sponsorship@wxxi.org

In the midst of an historic pandemic, surging unemployment and growing economic uncertainty, American voters will head to the polls this fall to decide whether President Donald Trump or former Vice President Joe Biden will lead the country for the next four years. And as it has for every election since 1988, Frontline’s acclaimed series The Choice will investigate the life stories of the two candidates: the roots of their drive to be president, the moments that shaped them, and the life method that has brought them to this point.

CONFRONTING RACE ON CAMPUS In this audio documentary from APM reports, you’ll hear from Lauren Brown, who left her mostly Black Chicago neighborhood for the University of Missouri. Moving to a predominantly white college was a huge shock, made even more difficult by the racial harassment she faced that fall. That same semester, the campus erupted in protests that made international news after several instances of racial harassment set off a Black studentled movement to change the school. Tune in to learn about the long history of student activism and demands for change that set the stage for the protests at Missouri.

SUMMER OF RACIAL RECKONING Since the killing of George Floyd in an arrest by Minneapolis Police on May 25th, the summer has unfolded with an outpouring of grief, anger and calls to action. AM 1370 brings you thes three one-hour specials from NPR. Comprising new reporting, as well as NPR’s best reporting on racial injustice, the protests that have swept the country, and where the nation is headed, the series is hosted by NPR’s Ailsa Chang and Rachel Martin. Episode One (9/13) explores the lives of the people at the center of the protests whose deaths sparked the movement. Episode Two (9/20) focuses on deeply rooted systemic racism opposed in the protests. Episode Three (9/27) reports on what has come of the protests so far, and the nation’s path forward. In each hour, Chang and Martin step through the story with other NPR hosts and correspondents bringing the last three months of American history into focus in a new way.

Senior Rabbi Peter Stein, Assistant Rabbi Rochelle Tulik, Cantor Keri Berger, and Choir Director Jason Berger lead the services live.
ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18 AT 8 P.M., tune in for the broadcast celebrating the Jewish New Year. ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27 AT 8 P.M., WXXI brings you the evening service for the Day of Atonement. Both of the Kol Nidrei Services broadcast live on Classical 91.5 FM, WXXY 90.3 FM in Houghton, and WITH 90.1 HD2 in Ithaca. These two broadcasts are made possible with support from the Louis S. and Molly B. Wolk Foundation.
HARBOR FROM THE HOLOCAUST VIRTUAL SCREENING + DISCUSSION
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3 AT 6:30 P.M. AT THE VIRTUAL LITTLE THEATRE Classical 91.5 and WXXI present a free screening of Harbor from the Holocaust, followed by a discussion at the Virtual Little Theatre on September 3rd. The film shares the story of 20,000 Jewish refugees who fled Nazi-occupied Europe during World War II to the city of Shanghai. The one-hour film explores the extraordinary relationship the refugees, known as “Shanghailanders,” had with their adopted city, through the bitter years of Japanese occupation 1937-1945 and the Chinese civil war that followed. The screening will be followed by a discussion on the film and how the music in the film evokes the time, the fear, the pain and the joy of the “Shanghailanders.” WXXI Classical 91.5 host Mona Seghatoleslami will introduce the film and moderate the discussion with a guest panel. To learn more and updates on the panelists, visit WXXI.org/events. HAR
