Last Tango in Halifax Sundays at 8 p.m., beginning September 8 Childhood sweethearts Alan and Celia, both widowed and in their 70s, fall for each other a second time when they are reunited on the internet after nearly 60 years. As their lives collide, the couple laments what might have been as they begin a lifeaffirming journey together. While their relationship is a celebratory tale of the power of love at any age, it is also a story about family and the complications the relationship causes, especially for their grown daughters. photo: Courtesy of Š Antony & Cleopatra Series Ltd

Dear Friends, Summer has ended, school is back in session, and another election season is upon us! Rochester Mayor Tom Richards and City Council President Lovely Warren are vying for the Democratic Mayoral nomination (the Primary Election on September 10 will determine who Norm Silverstein will be on the ballot in November’s General Election). If you’re a Rochester resident or follow local politics, I encourage you to tune in to WXXI-TV or AM 1370 on Tuesday, September 3 at 8 p.m. for our Voice of the Voter Democratic Primary Mayoral Debate. WXXI and its Voice of the Voter partners – Democrat and Chronicle, 13WHAM-TV, and WDKX 103.9 FM – will host the debate at WXXI’s studios, posing questions from a citizens’ poll that was conducted in mid-August. News that is balanced, television programming that is informative, radio shows that are engaging, films that spark conversations, and special events that bring neighbors together – these are just a few reasons why WXXI and the Little Theatre are worthy of our community’s support. It’s also why so many individuals became Sustaining members last month during our Sustainer Campaign. If you’re one of them, thank you! By offering a reliable source of income through your ongoing monthly gift, you help to provide dependable program funding we can count on. Best of all, you are helping to decrease the time we must fundraise on the air. As a Sustainer, you’ll never receive a renewal notice again, saving WXXI thousands of dollars in postage, printing, and administrative costs – not to mention the positive environmental benefits of less paper waste. Speaking of the environment, WXXI and the Little Theatre are proud to support Greentopia, the annual interactive festival that spotlights what our region is doing to embrace the green movement. The festival runs September 10-15, and in anticipation of it, WXXI-TV will present an encore broadcast of Ken Burns’ six-part series The National Parks, airing September 2-7 at 9 p.m. WXXI-TV will also air several kids programs with an eco-friendly theme that week. During the festival, WXXI and the Little will serve as official venues for several of Greentopia’s film presentations, including Jeremy Irons’ Trashed and Laura Dekker’s self-chronicled Maidentrip. To learn more, visit our partners at greentopiafest.com. Finally, I hope you’ll join us on September 26 at Hochstein School of Music & Dance for a lecture by America’s leading authority on European travel, Rick Steves. Tickets are $25 and, while supplies last, can be ordered by calling (585) 258-0200. If you’re a fan, then you know you can catch Rick Steves’ Europe Saturdays at 2:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV and the Travel with Ricks Steves radio show Saturdays at 1 p.m. on AM 1370. Now, you can see him in person, as he joins us here in Rochester! Rick’s visit kicks-off a busy fall season at WXXI and The Little. Thank you again for your ongoing support and for making it all possible! Best regards

Norm Silverstein, WXXI President norms@wxxi.org

TUESDAYS AT 8 P.M., SEPTEMBER 17-OCTOBER 1 ON WXXI-TV

This landmark three-part, six-hour documentary, narrated by actor Benjamin Bratt, is the first major documentary series for television to chronicle the rich and varied history and experiences of Latinos, who have for the past 500-plus years helped shape what is today the United States and have become, with more than 50 million people, the largest minority group in the U.S.

MISTER ROGERS & ME SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 1 AT 8 P.M. ON WXXI-TV

Soon after Fred Rogers had retired from many years of producing and starring in Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Rogers had a chance meeting with his next door neighbor on the island of Nantucket – Benjamin Wagner, a young, up-and-coming producer for MTV. On the afternoon of their first meeting, the children’s television icon provided Wagner with some wise advice: “I feel so strongly that deep and simple is far more essential than complex,” and urged Wagner to “spread the message.” The chance meeting would change Wagner’s life. After Rogers’ death in 2003, Wagner and his brother, Christopher, set out to meet some of Mister Rogers’ real-life “neighbors,” aiming to discover more about the man himself, what he meant by “deep and simple,” and who still preaches Rogers’ message. The result is detailed in this charming and philosophical documentary.

DIARY OF A BAD yEAR Sunday, SEPTEMBER 1 AT 9 P.M.

In 2011, NPR’s Kelly McEvers started to see things in slow motion. She cried unpredictably. She was a correspondent in the turbulent Middle East, at the time of the Arab uprisings. Colleagues and friends were being kidnapped. Some were getting killed. But still, she went toward the story. The next year, 2012, was the deadliest on record for journalists worldwide. It was a huge hit to the “tribe” of foreign correspondents of which Kelly is a part. With independent producer Jay Allison of Transom.org, Kelly chronicles that year and her personal struggles as a war correspondent in a new documentary radio hour called Diary of a Bad Year: A War Correspondent’s Dilemma. As she reported in dangerous places like Bahrain, Yemen, and Syria, Kelly braved gunfire, explosions, and tear gas, recording diaries the whole time. Kelly turns her reporting skills on her own life, seeking advice from doctors, scientists, and colleagues. Her goal was to answer one question: “Why do otherwise intelligent people risk their lives when they don’t have to?” It’s a gripping story, an unprecedented and intimate portrait of the sacrifices war correspondents and their families make to tell untold stories — and the sometimes dangerous allure of the job.

committed to academic excellence through 12th grade. “Academics and fine arts are coupled with unique offerings, a commitment to community service, the creative process, and a nurturing environment for students,” explained Aimee Lewis, Director of Communications and Public Relations. With an enrollment of approximately 500 students, financial aid is available to families in need. Most home districts provide busing to the school located on Clover Street in Brighton. Many may not be aware of Harley’s Nursery program for 3 and 4 year olds. Lewis described the program: “Our Nursery curriculum includes music and dance, an integrated thematic approach, a healthy lunch, and swimming lessons. Our youngest students enjoy our natural playground and all that our campus has to offer.” A new sustainable 14,000-square foot “living building,” Chesonis Commons, is under construction on campus. According to Lewis, “The Commons will generate its own energy and is the first Pre-K-12 education space in the country to offer students multiple dimensions of education around creating a sustainable future. Students will be involved in managing its operations.”

“At every Open House event we host, at least one person states hearing about the event on WXXI.” —Aimee Lewis, Director of Communications and Public Relations

Harley’s partnership with WXXI began by sponsoring Science Fridays (AM 1370, Fridays at 2 pm). Current radio spots highlight their Open House events. “At every Open House event we host, at least one person states hearing about the event on WXXI,” said Lewis. “WXXI listeners often value education, creativity, and seek experiences for their children to learn in a supportive academic environment. We feel WXXI is a great partner for underwriting and proposes new ideas to improve our partnership.” www.harleyschool.org
