Tony award-winning choreographer Garth Fagan and Grammy Award-winning musician and composer Wynton Marsalis

Lighthouse/Lightning Rod

recently joined forces for their second collaboration, Lighthouse/Lightning Rod. The concept and choreography were created by Fagan, and the original music was composed and arranged by Marsalis. It premiered at the Brooklyn Academy of Music to a packed house in September, and WXXI was granted exclusive behindthe-scenes access to document the project, which included rehearsals, creative planning sessions, and the opening night. This special documents the creative process and the final product, and includes interviews with industry leaders, media critics, art historians, and others who will share the significance of this collaboration and the work of these two artists. During the broadcast, WXXI will also share details about the Rochester debut of this collaboration at Nazareth Arts Center and how you can get tickets.

Dear Friends, If you ever needed a reminder of the difference between commercial and public media, you certainly got it this election season. When you tuned in to commercial stations, you were bombarded with political advertising. Norm Silverstein When you tuned in to WXXI, you heard: Voice of the Voter debates, Candidate Free Air Time, three presidential and one vice presidential debate, and ongoing news coverage. All of this was designed to help you make an informed decision on Election Day. After casting your vote on November 6, I invite you to join WXXI for up-to-the-minute results and analysis of local and national races. WXXI’s news team will provide complete coverage on AM 1370 with updates from NPR, 1370 Connection’s Bob Smith and WXXI’s Center for Public Affairs News Director Julie Philipp. They’ll have commentary from our field correspondents, who will be reporting live from the key local candidate headquarters. WXXI Capital Bureau Correspondent Karen DeWitt will also provide additional statewide coverage. On TV, we’ll bring you PBS NewsHour’s Election Night 2012: A Special Report, starting at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD, and WXXI News will offer updates on local races throughout the evening. Plus, you can listen to Morning Edition and All Things Considered throughout the rest of the week as we explore just what the results mean to you, the state, and the entire country. It’s this kind of in-depth coverage that your public broadcast station promises to bring you every day. Whether it’s ongoing election coverage by our news team, poignant documentaries on WXXI-TV/HD, or the trusted information you get from NPR each day, no media group in the region is as dedicated to this community as much as WXXI is. I know you value that, and I invite you to help insure that we remain strong and independent by making a pledge of support during our TV Membership Campaign. It kicks off November 22 with a My Music special, Ed Sullivan’s Top Performers. As always, we try to make on air campaigns as brief and efficient as possible. November also brings us acclaimed national talk show host Diane Rehm, heard every weekday from 10 a.m. to noon on AM1370. You won’t want to miss our luncheon with Diane on Friday, November 16 at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. You can order your tickets by calling (585) 258-0200 or by logging on to WXXI.org/diane. Special thanks to Keith & Betsy Wilson and Parker Law Offices for their support in making the luncheon possible. November is also the month to be thankful, and WXXI is most grateful for you – our members. It’s our members that keep Rochester’s public broadcasting station going strong. On behalf of all of us at the station and the Little Theatre, we’d like to wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving and holiday season! Sincerely,

Norm Silverstein, WXXI President & CEO norms@wxxi.org

WXXI Shares

100 Books

Over the summer, WXXI asked the community to help put age-appropriate books into the hands of children through one simple act – by sharing the name of their favorite children’s book titles at www. SoarwithReading.com. Rochester was just one of 71 cities selected to participate in the national Soar with Reading project, a JetBlue Airways and PBS KIDS collaboration where children’s books were donated to deserving kids through a partnership with Barefoot Books. Thanks to 100 Rochester participants, WXXI received 100 books that were distributed to the Rochester City School District’s Early Childhood Department. The books donated to the Rochester PreSchoolParent Program will be distributed among the 32 classes in the program. The books will be used as part of the district’s “Book in a Bag” program. Each child in the classroom selects a book to take home to share with their families for a week. More than $20,000 worth of books was donated to thousands of children across the country. Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown was this year’s most popular title with 738 submissions, and Where the Wild Things Are, The Giving Tree, and Green Eggs and Ham followed.

Join Hugh Bonneville, Dame Maggie Smith, Elizabeth McGovern, Dan Stevens, Michelle Dockery, Jim Carter and many more for a fond recollection of their favorite moments from Seasons 1 and 2, plus interviews with the actors and creative staff and rare behind-the-scenes footage of the production.

Downton Abbey Revisited

If you’re a fan of the witty and quirky London surgeon turned small town general practitioner, you won’t want to miss this marathon. WXXI-TV kicks off the night with Doc Martin: The Movie at 8 p.m. After discovering that his wife has been having affairs with three of his friends, Dr. Martin Bamford escapes to the sleepy coastal town of Port Isaac. There, he works through an identity crisis, and encounters many interesting characters along the way. At 9:30 p.m. WXXI presents Doc Martin and the Legend of the Cloutie. The Doc is in need of a bit of distance from the small village of Port Issac, so when the local real estate agent shows him the ramshackle, middle-of-nowhere property Tregrunnt Farm, it’s love at first sight. But the Bowden family from London also has their eye on the property with a view to developing the surrounding land into ugly holiday cottages. After being gazumped, the Doc decides to try to spook the family into leaving by pretending to be the Beast of Bodmin. The evening concludes with a 10:45 p.m. broadcast of the first episode of the Doc Martin series, season one. As Doc Martin moves in and meets the locals, he realizes that adjusting to village life is not going to be smooth sailing. In his sharp suits and flashy car, he’s a fish out of water.

TVHIGHLIGHTS

Sunday, November 25, 8 PM and 9:30 PM

Sunday, November 18 and Monday, November 19, 8 p.m.

Ken Burns surveys the causes of the worst manmade ecological disaster in American history—when the frenzied wheat boom of the “Great Plow-Up,” followed by a decade-long drought during the 1930s, nearly swept away the breadbasket of the nation—in his newest film The Dust Bowl. See vivid interviews with 26 survivors of those hard times, combined with dramatic photographs and seldom-seen movie footage that bring to life stories of incredible human suffering and equally incredible perseverance. The documentary is also a morality tale about our relationship to the land that sustains us — a lesson photo: Library of Congress we ignore at our peril.

David Geffen’s far-reaching influence — as agent, manager, record industry mogul, Hollywood and Broadway producer, and philanthropist — has helped shape American popular culture for the past four decades. Notoriously press- and camera-shy, Geffen reveals himself for the first time in this American Masters film. It’s an unflinching portrait of Geffen, who narrates his unorthodox rise from working class Brooklyn boy to billionaire entertainment power broker in extensive interviews. American Masters explores the highs and the lows in Geffen’s professional and personal life through more than 50 new interviews with his friends, colleagues and clients, as well as other media luminaries.

In Search of Memory Saturday, November 10, 5 p.m. on Wxxi-tv/hd

“Memory is everything. Without it we are nothing,” says neuroscientist Eric Kandel, winner of the Nobel Prize for his groundbreaking research on the physiology of the brain’s storage of memories. As he explains, memory is the glue that binds our mental life together and provides a sense of continuity in our lives. In Search of Memory is a compelling blend of autobiography and history that recounts the life of one of the most important neuroscientists of the 20th century and illuminates scientific developments in our understanding of the brain’s role in recording and preserving memory. Local support for In Search of Memory is provided by The Louis S. and Molly B. Wolk Foundation.

Turkey Confidential On Thursday, November 22, help is on the way for Thanksgiving cooks, kitchen helpers and dinner guests on this, the biggest cooking day of the year. Lynne Rossetto Kasper, host of The Splendid Table®, will be available to answer listener questions throughout the live, two-hour program. Quickly becoming a Thanksgiving morning tradition, past shows have included everything from a cross-country trucker cooking his Thanksgiving dinner on the manifold to a panicked first-time cook who didn’t realize a turkey needs to be thawed. Lynne handles all questions with wit, expertise and laughter.

“Turkey Confidential” airs Thanksgiving Day at 11 a.m.

Also on Thanskgiving Day tune in for Giving Thanks with John Birge at 1 p.m. and 10 p.m. on AM 1370. With music and stories for Thanksgiving, host John Birge creates a thoughtful, contemporary reflection on the meaning of the holiday. This year, a grateful tribute to the great writer Nora Ephron, with a warm and funny highlight of her Giving Thanks visit last year. This special also airs on Classical 91.5 at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

1370 Connection Forums & AM 1370 Specials Intelligence Squared “Are the Rich Taxed Enough?” airs Sunday, November 4 at 9 p.m. It is all bad news when it comes to the economy; the question is, how do we fix it? Are the nation’s wealthiest not paying their “fair share,” or should tax breaks be extended for everyone in the name of job creation? John Donvan moderates this debate. Speaking for the motion: Glenn Hubbard and Arthur Laffer. Speaking against the motion: Robert Reich and TBD. State of the Re:Union: Tucson, AZ airs Sunday, November 11 at 9 p.m. You can’t live in Tucson without constantly thinking about borders. The Sonoran desert is divided by a fence at the U.S.-Mexico border. Tucson is a liberal bastion separated from the rest of a staunchly conservative state. And the city itself is criss-crossed by highly charged boundaries -- cultural, economic and political. Join us in this desert city to hear stories about dividing lines, and what happens when people cross them.

State of the Re:Union: Jacksonville, FL airs Sunday, November 18 at 9 p.m. Situated over 850 square miles in the northeastern corner of Florida, Jacksonville is not only the largest city in the U.S., it also happens to be the hometown of our host, Al Letson. In this episode, Al looks in his own backyard and discovers stories of a sprawling city in the throws of remaking itself. Intelligence Squared “Should Drugs be Legalized” airs Sunday, November 25 at 9 p.m. It was 1971 when President Richard Nixon declared a “war on drugs.” $2.5 trillion dollars later, drug use is half of what it was 30 years ago. And yet, 22 million Americans -- 9 percent of the population -- still use illegal drugs. Now with the highest incarceration rate in the world, is it time to legalize drugs or is this a war that we’re winning? John Donvan moderates this debate. Speaking for the motion: Nick Gillespie and TBD. Speaking against the motion: Theodore Dalrymple and TBD.

Hayley Miller

Wednesday, November 21 at 12:10 p.m.

Recorded live in April 2012 at the Hochstein School of Music and Dance, this concert features the winners of the David Hochstein Recital Competition. The annual competition recognizes the outstanding musicianship and performance skills of advanced student musicians in grades 10-12 who reside in a nine-county region surrounding Greater Rochester. In the Piano Category, winner Stuart Burtner performs the music of J. S. Bach, Claude Debussy, and Lowell Lieberman. Stuart, of Rochester, began his piano studies with Dr. Bonnie Choi at the age of 10 in the Community Music Program of Nazareth College. He is a home-schooled senior and has been awarded a variety of competition prizes as well as being the recipient of four performance-based scholarships. The Strings Category winner, cellist Rachel Mills performs Seven Variations on “Bei Mannern” from Mozart’s “Magic Flute” by Beethoven and Ricordanza by George Rochberg. Rachel, a graduate of Webster Schroeder High School, began playing cello in third grade and now studies under Kathy Kemp at Hochstein. The Winds, Percussion, and Harp Category winner is flutist Hayley Miller who performs Sonatine for Flute and Piano by Henri Dutilleux and Concertino by Cécile Chaminade. An Evening with

Chris Trapper Saturday, November 10, 8 p.m., Little 1

tickets $20

Chris Trapper, front man for the late 90’s alternative band The Push Stars, comes to Rochester for a one-night performance at the Little Theatre. Join us as we hear Chris perform and talk about his music and what inspires him. Tickets are $20, and can be purchased at the Little’s box office. Trapper’s live show is a favorite among fans of alt–acoustic music. His on-stage persona is warm and inclusive, and his organic understanding of classic pop melody infectious. As a modern day singer and songwriter, Chris is most known for his song THIS TIME, the Number 1 selling song on the Grammy nominated soundtrack for August Rush (Robin Williams, Jonathan Rhys Meyers – Warner Bros Pictures). A prolific songwriter, Chris can boast high profile film placements including There’s Something About Mary (Ben Stiller, Cameron Diaz), The Devil Wears Prada (Meryl Streep), Say It Isn’t So (Heather Graham) and Gun Shy (Sandra Bullock, Liam Neeson).

Little Celebration. Big Success. More than 200 guests enjoyed an evening of food, fun and friends Tuesday, October 23 at the Little Theatre’s annual Little Celebration with Honorary Chairs Jack and Barbara Kraushaar. Decorated in the theme of the Roaring 20’s, harkening back to the days the Little’s door first opened, many guests joined in the spirit by attending in period dress. Rochester native Mimi Kennedy, who was recently seen on film in “The Five Year Engagement”, Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris” and Little Theatre favorite “In the Loop”, received the Vanguard Award. Awards also went to Erich S. Lehman, owner and curator of 1975 Gallery, who was presented with the “Good Neighbor” Award, and Ron Von Perlstein presented with the “Friends of the Little” Award. Special thanks to our Marquee Sponsor: MVP Health Care and Café sponsor: F. Oliver’s, as well as Theatre Sponsors: Valley Manor, Parker Law Offices and LaBella & Associates. We’d also like to thank our food sponsors: Lento, Voula’s, Tap & Table, Veneto’s, and Sticky Lips.

Community Cinema:

Solar Mamas Monday, November 26, 7 p.m., Free

This month’s Community Cinema film is Solar Mamas. Join us as we visit India’s Barefoot College, where rural, poor, and often illiterate women from around the world are offered the rare opportunity to receive an education that teaches them how to make their communities self-reliant and sustainable. Rafea, a beautiful, strong-willed 32-yearold Jordanian mother of four, is traveling outside of her village for the first time ever to attend Barefoot’s solar engineering program. Once there, she will join women from Guatemala, Kenya, Burkina Faso, and Colombia in a life-changing, six-month job training program that will transform her into a solar engineer — and change her life. Community Cinema screenings are held at the Little Theatre (240 East Avenue). All screenings, which are followed by panel discussions, are free, open to the public, and reservations are not required.

LENNONYC

LENNONYC is the story of one of the most famous and influential artists of the 20th century and how he found redemption not in the public adoration he craved as a youth, but in the quiet and simple pleasures of fatherhood. It is also a New York immigrant’s tale. Lennon came to New York City in 1971 seeking what every other immigrant has sought: freedom — the free-dom to be himself and not “Beatle John,” the freedom to live a normal life.
