Cordell Cordaro’s colorful crowd of characters seem to have walked out of many different types of story-realms. If you look closely, you will begin to notice his subjects are less deliberate individuals than vignettes of familiar-to-youth, intimate moments bubbling just beneath the playful adventure stories or the glossy, fashionable veneers of the elegant life. With studied skill, Cordell conveys a sense of fragile beauty born within each figure. Stylistically, Cordell’s party-scene works nod to Egon Schiele’s elegant waifs, in which anatomical distortions convey emotional truths, but his gestural brushstrokes and playful, mythic injections make his prolific portfolio firmly his own. An increasing master of several media, Cordell’s work includes paintings, ink drawings, and combinations of the two. His beloved oeuvre has found patrons across the world. Cordell participates in shows in New York City and Florida, and his work has also reached audiences in California, Greece, Singapore, and the UK.

St. Monci’s first exposure to art began in the streets of Puerto Rico, where he spent most of his childhood. He was immediately drawn to the transformative qualities of graffiti and street art and quickly immersed himself in the culture. It wasn’t until he returned to the States that he began to pursue and study art in its many forms. He eventually earned an MA in Studio Art at SUNY Oswego where he began to evolve and grow beyond his graffiti roots. His current work examines the most fundamental qualities of making and seeing; in color, form and composition, while still employing a certain street aesthetic. He currently resides and works in Rochester, NY. Murals by St. Monci can be seen in Rochester at The Little Theatre, 1975 Gallery and in the Southwedge among other places.

Shawnee grew up in the Finger Lakes around her grandmother’s porcelain doll business and sculpture studio. It was the beginning of her interest in drawing figures and portraits. After graduating from Pratt Institute in 2008 she spent time in California and eventually decided to come back to Rochester to work. Since then, she has created a body of work that has progressed in the development of theme and style with each new piece. Currently she is looking to focus on large scale painting and mural work. Murals by Shawnee can be seen in Rochester on the side of Fuego Coffee and The Bug Jar.

This month marks the 40th anniversary of the fall of Saigon and the end of the Vietnam War. To honor our veterans, we are proud to present the Academy Award-nominated film Last Days in Vietnam. We will first offer a free screening of the film at the Little Theatre on April 21 at 7 p.m. (it will broadcast on WXXI-TV on Tuesday, April 28 at 9 p.m). WXXI recently convened a group of Board Members and community leaders to form a Veterans Affairs Task Force. Its mission is to identify the most pressing needs and issues facing veterans and their families in the Greater Rochester and surrounding areas and to make recommendations about ways that WXXI and The Little’s programming and outreach can help address those needs. By connecting veterans to resources and information, WXXI can help strengthen the entire community. You’ll be hearing more about this initiative in coming months.

Variety’s TV columnist, Brian Lowry, said “the fifth-season finale offered a welcome reminder of just Norm Silverstein how splendid the show can be – warm, funny and emotional on a dazzling assortment of fronts.” I have to agree with him. Julian Fellows worked his magic and moved many storylines forward for a satisfying end. (If only we didn’t have to wait nine months for the next season to begin!)

Q&A WITH A WXXI Underwriter In 1970 Frank J. Annese founded Annese & Associates, Inc., as a company selling technologies like modems and multiplexers in Herkimer, N.Y. Upon his retirement in late 2008, ownership transferred to his four daughters. Annese is now officially recognized as a women-owned business enterprise. WXXI and the Little Theatre have pulled together a Veterans Affairs Task Force to create a community platform, raise awareness about veteran issues, and connect veterans with resources. This 2015 Academy Award-nominated documentary chronicles the chaotic final days of the Vietnam War as the North Vietnamese Army closed in on Saigon. With the clock ticking and the city under fire, American officers on the ground faced a moral dilemma: follow official policy and evacuate U.S. citizens and their dependents only, or ignore orders and save the men, women, and children they had come to value and love in their years in Vietnam. At the risk of their careers and possible courtmartial, a handful of individuals took matters into their own hands. Engaging in unsanctioned and often makeshift operations, they waged a desperate effort to evacuate as many South Vietnamese as possible.

Hosted by Larry Groce, each two-hour episode features seasoned legends and emerging stars in genres ranging from folk, blues, and country to indie rock, pop, world music, alternative, and beyond. The show was founded in 1983 in Charleston, WV and is produced by West Virginia Public Radio.“Mountain Stage” records 26 new episodes each year before a live audience at the Culture Center Theater in Charleston, West Virginia. The show occasionally travels to other venues elsewhere in the United States.

In April 2014 Pope Francis canonized Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II, and on that occasion Sir Gilbert Levine gathered orchestras and choruses from America and Europe to present works of peace and hope. The Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the Krakow Philharmonic Choir and the Washington Choral Arts Society present Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, Verdi’s Messa da Requiem, Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 along with an ancient Polish hymn and Gorecki’s Totus Tuus.

FIRST INVERSION FRIDAY, APRIL 17 AT 1 P.M. ON CLASSICAL 91.5 Julia Figueras welcomes the recently formed vocal ensemble First Inversion to Studio A for a concert in front a very special audience of volunteers throughout our community. First Inversion, founded by Artistic Director Lee Wright brings together both professional and avocational singers from the Eastman School of Music and the larger community with the goal of true personal and musical growth for all through a focus on fearless and selfless musical expression. Backstage Pass is a monthly live performance program that gives listeners the backstage experience of meeting local and visiting artists. An encore of this broadcast will air Sunday, April 19 at 1 p.m. on Classical 91.5.

When she watches a film and believes she’s found a clue about cash buried in North Dakota, she sets off on a dangerous adventure unlike anything she’s seen in the movies.

The Andrew Alden Ensemble will accompany this film with live music, written specifically for Hausu – just like in the glory days of silent film, with a Little twist!

Short Circuit: Series 1 represents a cross-section of some of the most daring and interesting films being made independently and completely outside of the mainstream of cinema. The films and filmmakers presented here offer a glimpse at the future of underground, independent cinema and the filmmakers’ passion, experimentation, and spirit of resistance to the status quo.
General Admission: $8 with discounts for seniors, students and Little members In 1993, artist Anselm Kiefer left Germany for La Ribaute, a derelict silk factory in the South of France. In 2000 he began constructing a series of elaborate installations there. Like a strange, sprawling village, La Ribaute is composed of old industrial buildings and working studios that link to a network of underground tunnels dug out by Kiefer. This film tells the story of his artistic process.

JAMES HANSEN COMING TO the LITTLE theatre On April 20 at 6:30 p.m., The Little is hosting a screening of indie film Future Weather, followed by a talk by renowned Columbia professor and climate expert James Hansen, Ph.D. This screening and talk are part of The Little’s Science on Screen series, a national program in which theaters pair films with talks by science and technology experts.
About Dr. Hansen: Dr. James Hansen, formerly director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, is Adjunct Professor and at Columbia University’s Earth Institute, where he directs a program in Climate Science, Awareness and Solutions. He has won over 40 awards for his work, including the NASA Distinguished Medal and the Center for International Environmental Law’s Frederick R. Anderson Award for Outstanding Contributions to Addressing Climate Change.
About the film: Lauduree is a 13-year-old loner, passionate about nature and obsessed with ecological disaster. Greta, her grandmother, is a fiery nurse jaded by alcohol and disappointment. When Lauduree is abruptly abandoned by her dreamer single mom, she decides to take survival into her own hands, forcing her and Greta to learn to trust each other and leap into the unknown.

On Thursday, April 2 at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 4 at 12:00 p.m., The Little is proud to present the National Theatre Live production of Behind the Beautiful Forevers. Zehrunisa and her son Abdul aim to recycle enough rubbish to fund a proper house. Sunil, 12 and stunted, wants to eat until he’s as tall as Kalu the thief. Asha seeks to steal government anti-poverty funds to turn herself into a “first-class person,” while her daughter Manju intends to become the slum’s first female graduate. Katherine Boo spent three years in Annawadi recording the lives of its residents. From her uncompromising book, winner of the National Book Award for Non-Fiction in 2012, David Hare has fashioned a tumultuous play on an epic scale. NT Live is really something to see. The best theatre performances from London’s West End are recorded with cameras positioned throughout the theatre, ensuring Little audiences get the best seat in the house every time. This play contains strong language and some scenes of violence. It’s suitable for children 14 and over.
