NEWS&EVENTS

Q&A WITH A WXXI Community Partner In January Causewave Community Partners became the new name of The Advertising Council of Rochester. President and CEO Todd Butler describes the focus of the community organization. Q. Tell us about your new name. After 65 years, we found our name limiting in two ways: it made people think advertising was all we did and that advertising by itself can create change on major issues. The Causewave name communicates that we’re about more than just advertising – and that there is help for causes looking to find momentum and affect change. Q. Which community challenge is currently top of mind? Poverty certainly tops the community conversation. We’re involved in a number of initiatives connected to this issue, including early help-seeking (via calls to 2-1-1), early-grade attendance in the Rochester City School District, workforce development, and the Urban-Suburban program. Q. How can the community get involved? The good news is there are many ways people can make a difference – even on such big issues – from volunteering on the projects previously mentioned, to supporting organizations actively involved in these initiatives. Q. Which campaigns rank among those you’re most proud of? Those with the most impact – like our current efforts on distracted driving and lead poisoning prevention. Both have had life-changing impact on the local community. Q. When it comes to implementing successful change in our community, which roadblocks are the most significant? Collaboration can be messy and difficult, but it’s absolutely required for change on big issues. As President Harry S. Truman said, “It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.” Q. Past and current Ad Council campaigns have been promoted via cinema slides at The Little Theatre. Can you comment on the power of public media and community cinema? When our pre-show ad slides run at the Little, they’re seen by thousands of people who really care about improving our community. Many of them are also directly affected by issues we’re working on – like support for caregivers. Public media is a powerful force for good in Rochester.

WXXI AUCTION’S FEATURED ARTISTS Biaggi’s ristorante italiano gift card Value: $50

In addition to original artwork, our featured artists offer limited edition prints of their work. We’re proud to welcome back last year’s artists Cordell Cordaro and Laura Wilder, and we’re proud to introduce two new featured artists this year.

Mark Groaning Gallery located at 333 East Avenue

“ A visit to the Mark Groaning Gallery located at 333 East Ave., will introduce you to the many media with which I choose to create: Paintings on canvas, wood and steel, fused glass jewelry, steel sculptures from the very small such as pendants to the very tall for home, office or garden...mobiles, light sculptures, sculpted acrylic forms and photography repainted with new life. The world is full of art as experienced in day to day life. Literally everything I see and experience begs to be interpreted and expressed through me, in my own way. I consume and merge with everything that I come into contact with and forge the result of that convergence into whatever type art form it wishes to manifest. In short, Life inspires me to express it and I do so with enthusiasm!”

2015 WALL/THERAPY Mural titled city and Sky by Nate Hodge

Mark’s work has been shown and sold at several local spots—including, Joe Bean Coffee Roasters, and Tap and Mallet in the city’s South Wedge. He’s also had his art featured at galleries in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and in Naples and Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Nate Hodge 2015 WALL/THERAPY Artist-Mural titled City and Sky located on Atlantic Avenue 2016 Lillian Fairchild Award Winner

Nate Hodge began working with WALL/THERAPY in 2015 after participating in several group shows at the 1975 Gallery in Rochester, which specialized in showcasing the work of up-and-coming local artists. He has a BFA from SUNY Brockport and an MFA from the University of Buffalo. Hodge currently lives and works in Brockport, N.Y., while he exhibits drawings and installations both locally and regionally. “The most inspiring thing about public art is its ability to reach a wide spectrum of people,” said Hodge. “Outside of a gallery or museum there are few places you can encounter paintings or sculptures and I feel like only a small portion of the population is able to make time to visit these places. Public art exists on the periphery of everyday activities and democratizes a field that unfortunately can come off as elitist and exclusive. In the spring, Hodge will begin working on a large-scale mural in the University’s Memorial Art Gallery as a way to provide museumgoers with an “immersive painting they can step into rather than observe on a wall.”

Intelligence Squared U.S.:

Should The U.S. Let In 100,000 Syrian Refugees? Sunday, april 3 at 9pm ON AM 1370

The U.S. has taken in just over 2,000 Syrian refugees since the Syrian Civil War’s start, and the Obama administration has pledged to take another 10,000 in 2016. What are our moral obligations, and what are the cultural, economic, and security issues that must be taken into account? Should the U.S. let in 100,000 Syrian refugees? The debaters are Robert Ford, David Frum, David Miliband, and Jessica Vaughan.
