ON HOME GROUND: LIFE AFTER SERVICE TUESDAY, AUGUST 4 AT 8 P.M. ON WXXI-TV

On Home Ground: Life After Service gives an intimate

look into the lives of three veterans who returned home to the Adirondacks in upstate New York after deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. Their small hometowns are scenic and peaceful, but also remote and isolating. The physical distance means limited access to essentials like healthcare, and a struggling economy contributes to widespread unemployment for veterans. Years after coming back, each vet reflects on their coming home, rebuilding relationships, grappling with physical and mental changes, and finding a unique grounding in the camaraderie among fellow veterans.

BEGINNING WITH THE END TUESDAY, AUGUST 18 AT 8PM ON WXXI-TV

“Beginning With The End is not a sad movie, but one which captures the humor of old age, the willingness of teenagers to look beyond their own needs, and the reality of death. Marshall’s touching documentary treats them all with respect.” —The Huffington Post In local documentarian Dave Marshall’s film, Beginning With The End, Marshall follows the experiences of teacher Robert Kane and a group of 16-18 year-old students who have enrolled in his Hospice Class at the Harley School in Rochester. The high school students are given the unusual and extraordinary opportunity to work as trained hospice volunteers throughout the Rochester area and Marshall’s film depicts their progression from trepid teenagers to confident caregivers learning how to manage their fears. This transformation exemplifies not only young adults growing more confident in themselves, but also the changes humans of all ages make as we are forced to confront our own insecurities.

Dear Friends, One of the most frequently asked questions we receive these days is, “When does the final season of Downton Abbey begin?” And the answer, from our friends at PBS is, Downton Abbey, Season 6, will be 10 hours over nine episodes, with a 10-week rollout beginning January 3 and concluding March 6.

Norm Silverstein

The next most asked question is, “Are you going to have a preview at the Little Theatre again?” Of course, the answer is “yes,” and we’ll keep you posted on when it will take place and how you can participate. Downton Abbey has been one of the biggest hits on PBS and WXXI in many years. You can’t always predict what the audience will like, but we knew that Downton was special from the very first season. It has renewed interest in drama on television and has opened the door to other great fare from Masterpiece. Sunday nights will continue to be “must see” television from WXXI. One of the ways you can tell that a show has really made a difference and has a following is when it becomes part of popular culture. According to PBS, Downton has been parodied by comedians Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert, has been featured on Sesame Street and Saturday Night Live, and has inspired many discussions on social media. It also reaches out to all age groups, bringing new audiences to public media. It hasn’t done too badly in the award category, either – 51 Emmy nominations, the most for a British production in Emmy history (we don’t have room here to list all the awards and nominations). Until Season 6 arrives, here are a few places WXXI will be this summer for you to catch up with our volunteers and our stars: • “ Park Ave Fest” is here August 1 and 2 and we’ll be there with our WXXI/Little Theatre booth handing out fans to beat the heat and share information about all our programs, movies, and services. • “ Hochstein at High Falls” finishes out the season with performances by The Jane Mutiny on August 6 and Pan Loco on August 13. If you haven’t had a chance to attend these free lunchtime concerts in High Falls, I recommend you try to make these two concerts. Bring a lunch and enjoy the music alongside the falls. • On August 10 at 6:30 p.m. we’ll be partnering with the Veterans Outreach Center to host a free screening of Service: When Women Come Marching Home, a documentary that depicts the courage of several women veterans as they transition from active duty to civilian life. It will be followed by a discussion led by one of the women featured in the film. This event is part of our Veterans Connections initiative, designed to identify and draw awareness to the most pressing needs and issues facing veterans and their families. • We’ve also partnered with Geva Theatre Center on a Monty Python Film Festival, which runs Wednesdays, August 19 – September 9. Films and details are highlighted on The Little page of this magazine. And don’t forget every day WXXI and The Little bring you thought-provoking films and television shows, in-depth local and national news, inspiring classical music, educational children’s programs and so much more. All of this is made possible with your support. So, thank you – and I’ll see you out this August! Best regards,

Norm Silverstein

NEWS&EVENTS

Q&A WITH A WXXI Underwriter Since its founding in 1913, the Memorial Art Gallery (MAG) has been a Rochester treasure. Director Jonathan Binstock reveals some noteworthy facts about the MAG: Q. How would you describe the MAG?

RY T GALLE R A L A I R MEMO

A. The MAG cares for, interprets, and shares art from ancient times to the present, to encourage thinking about creativity and aesthetics.

Q. Any little known facts about the MAG? A. For the past two years the MAG has hosted every first- through sixth-grade student at Francis Parker’s School No. 23 of the Rochester City School District for two hours for ten consecutive Fridays. Students walk from school to the MAG and explore the museum’s 5,000 years of world art. They then make art in our Creative Workshop art school. We hope to be a national model for how a regional museum can deliver arts education to public elementary school students. Another interesting tidbit: Morse code written into one of the MAG’s Centennial Park walkways spells out the colors of the rainbow!

Q. Any favorite pieces in the permanent collection? A. Among our most recent acquisitions, I adore our masterful portrait of jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker made in 1968 by African American painter Beauford Delaney. Q. Which local and Finger Lakes artists should we watch and why? A. Peter Pincus makes the most stunning ebulliently colored, matte-finish ceramic forms and vases. He was born in Rochester and educated at Alfred University.

Q. What’s coming up at the MAG that you’re most excited about?

Jonathan Binstock, DIRECTOR

A. Inspiring Beauty: 50 Years of Ebony Fashion Fair opens January, 2016. The exhibition will feature couture designs by some of the world’s best fashion designers from 1958 to 2008, commissioned by Eunice Johnson of the Johnson Publishing Company (JET and Ebony magazines, BET). mag.rochester.edu To learn more about underwriting on WXXI, email underwriting@wxxi.org

Much has been done to upgrade this iconic Rochester landmark including new projectors, sound systems, screens, and adaptive technology for patrons with special hearing needs. We have also built a reel-to-reel system in Theater 1, so we can continue showing films on . . . film, just like we have for the past 85 years. We gutted Theater 2 and added new seats—with cupholders—and plan to replace seats in the remaining four theaters. The biggest project remains the renovation of the original East Avenue Little Theatre. We have ambitious plans to bring the art deco marquee back to its former glory. In addition to replacing the seats, the interior will be spruced up. Modernization and accessibility for all is critical. We will widen the front doors in the lobby of Theater 1 to allow for easier maneuvering and will make the bathrooms and seating wheel-chair accessible. Rochester has a very large deaf and hard-of-hearing population, and improved closed captioning and hearing amplification technology are items on the list of upgrades to be made.

UNDERSTANDING ISLAMIC FEMINISIM COUNTERING VIOLENT Sunday, AUG. 2 at 9pm ON AM 1370 EXTREMISM In some Muslim-majority countries, women are struggling for basic equal rights: the right to drive, to travel without their husbands, to divorce. In other parts of the world, Muslim women are striving for full gender equality in how they speak, work, and pray. Anchored by Madeleine Brand, this program is an exploration of the ideals and promise of modern-day feminism.

Audiences in Philadelphia and Berlin, Germany discuss how Europe and the U.S. are dealing with violent extremism, especially in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo attack as well as the recent shooting in Garland, Texas.

NPR Expands Host Lineup For

“ All Things Considered” All Things Considered, NPR’s flagship evening drive-time show, is getting two additional weekday hosts—Ari Shapiro and Kelly McEvers—and a new weekend host—Michel Martin. Together with current All Things Considered hosts Robert Siegel and Audie Cornish, the expanded host lineup helps NPR keep pace with the way audiences are consuming news in evening drive-time and opens new doors to audience growth. The changes take effect in September. “Adding these voices to our afternoon lineup seven days a week increases our ability to sound like America and the communities we cover,” said Michael Oreskes, NPR Senior Vice President of News and Editorial Director. “With these changes, our listeners will benefit from a whole new range of stories, sources, and perspectives.” Credit: 2010 NPR by Doby Photography

ROCHESTER

TEEN FILM FEST

Life of Brian | Wednesday, August 26 at 6:30 p.m. Brian is born on the original Christmas, in the stable next door. He spends his life being mistaken for a messiah.

Meaning of Life | Wednesday, September 2 at 6:30 p.m. The comedy team takes a look at life in all its stages in their own uniquely silly way.

Not the Messiah: He’s a Very Naughty Boy | Wednesday, Sept 9 at 6:30 p.m. A comic oratorio inspired by Monty Python’s Life of Brian filmed at its only European performance at the Royal Albert Hall in October 2009 to celebrate 40 years of Monty Python. Geva’s Spamalot, which runs September 9 through October 11, is an outrageous musical parody that tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. Embarking on their quest to find the Holy Grail, the Knights’ shenanigans include flying cows, beautiful show girls, killer rabbits, and flatulent Frenchmen– all while performing heart-stopping and hilarious musical numbers.

MOVIES WITH A DOWNTOWN VIEW PRESENTS...

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5 AT 5:30 P.M. THE LITTLE, THEATER 1

We’re proud to host the 2015 Rochester Teen Film Festival, an annual celebration honoring the work of urban, suburban and rural teen filmmakers. The film fest gives young people an authentic opportunity to participate in a real film festival. Submissions were accepted through the end of June and were judged by a jury of professionals in the film industry. Finalists have been selected to have their films shown at festival. Brought to you by Nazareth College, WXXI, and The Little, the Rochester Teen Film Festival is free and open to the public.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 14, 6:30 P.M. MLK JR. MEMORIAL PARK It’s back…. Movies with a Downtown view! We’re partnering with the Rochesteriat again this year to screen free movies at MLK Jr. Memorial Park. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the film begins at dusk. This month’s film is Be Kind, Rewind, starring Jack Black, Mos Def, and Danny Glover. Rated PG-13, it’s about two bumbling store clerks, who inadvertently erase the footage from all of the tapes in their video rental store. In order to keep the business running, they re-shoot every film in the store with their own camera, with a budget of zero dollars. Come hungry and enjoy food from local food trucks and beer from Roc Brewing, or bring a blanket and have a picnic!

FIXED THE SCIENCE FICTION OF HUMAN ENHANCEMENT AUGUST 18 AT 9 PM ON WXXI-TV

As a part of WXXI and the Golisano Foundation’s MOVE TO INCLUDE initiative, WXXI-TV presents Fixed: The Science Fiction of Human Enhancement. From Botox to bionic limbs, the human body is more “upgradeable” than ever. But how much of it can we alter and still be human? What do we gain or lose in the process? The possibilities stir the imagination and excitement of many, while for others the rhetoric and research signals the alarm of a new eugenics. And for most non-scientists, it sounds like the realm of science fiction. Through a dynamic mix of verité, dance, archival and interview footage, FIXED rethinks “disability” and “normalcy” by exploring technologies that promise to change our bodies and minds forever. MOVE TO INCLUDE is a partnership between WXXI and the Golisano Foundation designed to stimulate community dialogue about the perspectives of people with physical and intellectual disabilities. To learn more and share your thoughts about the power of inclusion, visit MoveToInclude.org.
