AUGUST 2018

BETTY WHITE FIRST LADY OF TELEVISION TUESDAY, AUGUST 21 AT 8 P.M. ON WXXI-TV Filmed over the course of five years by the team behind the acclaimed Pioneers of Television series, Betty White: First Lady of Television is a warm look at the life and career of the beloved television and film legend who celebrates 80 years in show business this year — officially the longest career in the history of TV. Lauded for her roles as the bawdy Sue Ann on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, the innocent Rose on The Golden Girls and her more recent role as the worldly Elka on Hot in Cleveland, Betty White is also an industry pioneer. She was the first woman to produce a national TV show, the first woman to star in a sitcom, the first producer to hire a female director, and the first woman to receive an Emmy nomination.

DEAR FRIENDS, My wife and I went to see “Won’t You Be My Neighbor,” the wonderful documentary film about Fred Rogers, at the Little Theatre recently. There were more than a few tears shed that night by people who grew up Norm Silverstein with “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood” or who watched the show with their children and grandchildren. Fred Rogers reminded all of us that a little kindness can make a big difference – something we could all use a lot more of today. It was always a pleasure to hear Fred Rogers speak at PBS meetings and to meet many of his cast members. Fred was credited with saving PBS in its early years through his appearance at a Senate budget hearing where he talked about the importance of children’s television (the film clip from the hearing is included in the movie). I would argue that educational children’s television is needed today more than ever. I’m especially proud that WXXI is a leader in children’s television, including our new 24/7 Kids Channel. Our programs have a “Ready to Learn” message to help kids be prepared when they enter school. If you’d like to learn more about the many ways WXXI supports education throughout our community, please visit our website: WXXI. org/education. There’s still time for you to take advantage of some of WXXI’s educational outreach activities this summer. Our education department has teamed up with the Central Library for WXXI Kids 2018 “Summer Exploration Stations” every Thursday from 11am to 3pm through August 16th. Kids have the opportunity to learn about different music genres, design and make instruments of their own, and use their creative, curious brains to do lots more hands-on activities. (These events are free and best suited for kids ages 3 to 12 years old.) WXXI and the Little Theatre are proud to host the “Rochester Teen Film Festival,” an annual celebration of youth filmmakers. You can see the finalist films at a free screening at The Little on August 8th at 5:30 pm. Also, be sure to save this date – Saturday, September 15 – for WXXI’s Open House, where we open our doors at 280 State Street to the public for a day of fun, free activities for guests of all ages. You’ll have a chance to meet some of your favorite PBS Kids’ characters including Curious George, Elmo, and Jet from Ready Jet Go! Enjoy the rest of your summer, and I hope to see you at one of our events this month! Best regards,

Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org | @normWXXI

TVHIGHLIGHTS

DIONNE

WARWICK

THEN CAME YOU SATURDAY, AUGUST 25 AT 8 P.M. ON WXXI-TV

Celebrate the legendary, Grammy-winning singer and her greatest hits in this 90-minute special that traces the singer’s musical roots in the church, where she sang as a teen in a gospel group. She became a background singer performing with many classic R&B artists, leading to her discovery by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, who would go on to form a famously successful three-way musical marriage with Dionne. See, for the first time, rare, full-length archival performances of the Warwick-Bacharach-David 1960s favorites, as well as Warwick’s smash hits from the 1970s and 1980s, including “Then Came You” (with The Spinners), “I’ll Never Love This Way Again,” “Heartbreaker,” and “That’s What Friends Are For” (with Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight and Elton John). THROUGH THE EYE OF THE NEEDLE THE ART OF ESTHER NISENTHAL KRINITZ SUNDAY, AUGUST 12 AT 1 P.M. ON WXXI-TV Esther Nisenthal was 15 years old in October of 1942 when the Jews of her village in Poland were ordered by the Nazis to report to a nearby train station. Esther refused to go. Instead, saying goodbye to their family, she and her 13-year old sister Mania invented new identities for themselves as Polish Catholic farm girls, hiding in plain sight from the Nazis. Esther’s story of survival is remarkable on its own. But it is all the more extraordinary because of her method of storytelling--stitching and embroidering. Through Esther’s own words and images of her art work, as well as interviews with her daughters and others, this film explores the capacity of the human heart to heal.

FABRIC OF SURVIVAL: THE ART OF ESTHER NISENTHAL KRINITZ AUGUST 17 - DECEMBER 2 AT THE MEMORIAL ART GALLERY Watch the film and then see Esther Nishenthal’s work in person at the Memorial Art Gallery. And, there’s a special lecture to be held on Sunday, September 16 at 3:30 p.m where Esther’s daughters Helene McQuade and Bernice Steinhardt, who are featured in the film, talk about the textile art of their mother. BREWED in NEW YORK THURSDAY, AUGUST 23 AT 8 P.M. ON WXXI-TV

AM 1370 Special

Repeat of today’s show at 12pm 10:00

SUNDAYS AT 9 P.M., BEGINNING AUGUST 26

Just as a new school year is about to begin, AM 1370 brings you four documentaries focused on our education system.

CHANGING CLASS: ARE COLLEGES HELPING AMERICANS MOVE UP? SUNDAY, AUGUST 26 AT 9 P.M.

When it comes to helping kids from poor families move up the income ladder, America’s colleges could be doing much better. A new project by a group of economists shows that some colleges are accomplishing more than others in the promotion of social mobility. This program explains what’s going on.

STILL RISING: FIRST-GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENTS A DECADE LATER SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 2 AT 9 P.M.

Mario Martinez and Katy Sorto were the first in their families to go to college. They started at community college in 2008 and hoped to earn degrees. But the odds were against them. This documentary tells their stories 10 years later.

OLD IDEA, NEW ECONOMY: REDISCOVERING APPRENTICESHIPS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 9 AT 9 P.M.

Apprenticeships can provide a ticket to the middle class for people who’ve been left behind by “college for all.” Supporters on both the right and the left say the “earn while you learn” approach can help create a more skilled workforce, provide a path to solid, middle-class careers, and serve as a needed corrective to the “college for all” push that has left some students with piles of debt and no obvious career.

HARD WORDS: WHY AREN’T OUR KIDS BEING TAUGHT TO READ? SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 AT 9 P.M.

More than half of American kids can’t read very well because schools are failing to provide effective reading instruction. Now, there is definitive evidence from neuroscience on how the brain learns to read, and it suggests very different approaches. This documentary explores why the reading science is not making its way into American classrooms and what can be done about it.

AM 1370 SPECIALS:

MANHOOD, NOW

INNOVATION HUB SUMMER SPECIAL

This Spring, as part of new Death, Sex & Money (DSM) project Manhood, Now, listeners were asked to contribute their thoughts and views on masculinity. The response has been extraordinary. Death, Sex & Money Anna Sale hosts a conversation on masculinity with an hour-long national call-in about this moment of change for American men. She’ll be joined by W. Kamau Bell of CNN’s United Shades of America, and will invite listeners to share their own stories.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 5 AT 9 P.M. ON AM 1370

MAKING IT BETTER

Everyone wants to make their life, their country, their world better. But how exactly do you do that? Innovation Hub explores that very question, from a bunch of different angles.

INTELLIGENCE SQUARED US

TRIGGER WARNING: ARE SAFE SPACES DANGEROUS?

SUNDAY, AUGUST 19 AT 9 P.M. ON AM 1370

Long hailed as bastions of intellectual development and ground zero for the free and spirited exchange of ideas, today’s universities have come under attack by those who argue that a new generation of students and administrators are trading in academia’s most cherished values for political correctness and inclusion. Are safe spaces dangerously coddling young minds? Or are they a legitimate and necessary component of modern education?
