ST. NICK

World War II exacted a heavy toll on the people of Wiltz, Luxembourg, nearly destroying the small town. Occupied by German forces for four years, the town was subject to the whims of Nazi leadership: streets were renamed, religious freedoms were curtailed, and Saint Nicholas Day was outlawed. American St. Nick chronicles a day when the battle-weary 28th Infantry Division of the American Army returned hope and joy to the children and people of this war-torn town. On Dec. 5, 1944, American soldiers put their guns down for one day and organized a party celebrating the town’s centuries-old Saint Nick tradition. Soldiers made hot chocolate from their D-rations, company cooks made cookies for the children, and 22-year-old corporal Richard Brookins, a Pittsford resident, played the role of Saint Nick.

THE AMERICAN ST. NICK airs MONDAY, DECEMBER 7 AT 9PM & THURSDAY, DECEMBER 17 AT 9PM ON WXXI-TV and Tuesday, December 29 at 3 pm on WORLD

Wishing you’ll patronize our underwriters.

Q&A WITH A WXXI Underwriter Gates Automotive has been providing mechanical repair, collision, and fleet service since 1990. President and CEO James Fonzi, proudly describes the business.

Q: What makes Gates Automotive unique in the Greater Rochester area? A: We back up our work with a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee. We’re proud of our work, and we stand behind it completely. Our staff is knowledgeable, and we provide high quality work and service. Our slogan is “Welcome to the Service You Deserve!” Q: Every year cars are getting more features and incorporating new technologies. How do you keep up in a changing industry? A: We’re Mercedez-Benz Elite Certified, meaning we have the equipment and training to repair high-end vehicles through aluminum welding. The training behind that certification is extensive. There is a growing need for computer-savvy technicians as well. Q: What misconceptions about mechanics do you encounter and how do you dispel them? A: Our technicians are well-trained, and we always encourage continued education in the field. Q: What advice would you give our audience to protect their cars against harsh Rochester winters? A: Be prepared. Have an emergency kit in your vehicle. The kit might include: blankets, flashlights with fresh batteries, jumper cables, a small bag of sand or salt, a shovel, snow brush and ice scraper, and some bottles of water. Also, make sure maintenance is up to date, and enhance visibility as much as possible. And don’t let your gas tank get below a quarter of a tank. Q: What is the strangest repair you have ever done? A: Several have been animal-related. One customer hit a turkey that went through the windshield. Another had a deer jump through the side windows. After a bird dropped a piece of bread on the hood of another customer’s car, a dog scratched up the car trying to retrieve the bread!

Within the spectacular setting, the group performs to a welcoming and enthusiastic audience against a 60-foot wide video screen displaying specially filmed scenes that encapsulate all the natural wonders for which Ireland is renowned. REMEMBERING THE CARPENTERS THURSDAY, DECEMBER 10 AT 8PM ON WXXI-TV

With hits such as “Close to You,” the Carpenters proved to be one of the most significant pop music acts of the 1970s. Chronicling the brother-and-sister duo from their earliest high school performances to Karen’s tragic death, their story is told through interviews with such musical legends as Burt Bacharach and Herb Alpert, along with clips from their many television appearances.

HANDEL’S MESSIAH:

A UNITED STATES

NAVAL ACADEMY TRADITION SundayDECEMBER 20 AT 7PM ON WXXI-TV The United States Naval Academy Glee Club with members of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra and worldrenowned guest soloists create a unique performance of one of the greatest choral works in Western music. Recorded at the beautiful chapel on the grounds of the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, the program is an abridged version of the entire original work. Performers include: Rochester’s own Gregory Kunde, Tenor (pictured); Karen Clift, Soprano; Robin Blaze; Countertenor, Dean Peterson, Bass; and conducted by Dr. Aaron Smith, Director of Musical Activities for the Naval Academy. The young patriots singing this wonderful music come from every state across the country to attend the Naval Academy, not only to receive their undergraduate degree, but more importantly, to accept a Commission to serve our great nation as Officers in the United States Navy or United States Marine Corps. Marketplace Takes Care of Holiday Business Sunday, DEC. 6 at 9pm ON AM 1370

The Marketplace Weekend team looks at where the holidays meet money. Host Lizzie O’Leary is joined by some of APM’s biggest names to explore that intersection, tell some stories, and help you financially navigate the holiday season.

The Dinner Party Download Holiday Special Sunday, DEC. 20 at 9pm This December, we’re making a special episode of The Dinner Party Download stuffed with holiday goodness. You’ll hear: a Yuletide playlist from chart-toppers Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, featuring crazy relatives and David Bowie’s “Labyrinth”; etiquette tips to save you from a work party snafu (or maybe create a memorable one); a little-known chestnut of holiday history; conversations with special guests both nice and (delightfully) naughty; and lots more! Featuring good cheer, comic relief, and a tipple or two, the episode’s a perfect companion to the hectic and happy holiday season.

Tinsel Tales 3: Even More NPR Christmas Favorites Friday, DEC. 25 at 12PM and 9pm In keeping with a well-loved NPR holiday tradition, hear the third collection of extraordinary Christmas stories that will transport you to unexpected places. Audie Cornish, Ken Harbaugh, Nina Totenberg, and other voices from NPR’s past and present tell stories of the season in this hour-long special. Some tales are funny; some are touching; some are insightful or irreverent or nostalgic or surprising. You might recognize them from our broadcast archives — or you might fall in love with them for the first time.

TOLL BROTHERS Mary Jo Heath METROPOLITAN OPERA INTERNATIONAL This season you’ll hear a new host –

the fourth full-time radio host in the Met’s history. If her name sounds familiar it’s because she served as a host at WXXI-FM while she was working on her Ph.D. in Music Theory at the Eastman School of Music in the 1980s. We look forward to hearing Mary Jo every week on the Metropolitan Opera Radio Broadcasts.

SATURDAYS AT 1 PM ON CLASSICAL 91.5

The broadcasts debuted on December 25, 1931, with Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, and are now the longest-running classical music series in American broadcast history.

The Armor

of Light Tuesday, December 8 at 7 p.m. at the Little Theatre

The directorial debut of Abigail Disney — the granddaughter of Roy Disney — follows the journey of Reverend Rob Schenck, an evangelical minister who finds the courage to preach about the toll of gun violence in America. An anti-abortion activist, Schenck questions whether being progun is consistent with being pro-life, much to the discomfort of his colleagues. He eventually meets Lucy McBath — also a Christian and the mother of Jordan Davis, an unarmed teenager who was murdered in Florida. Through their stories, intercut with revealing footage underlining the marriage between the religious right and the NRA, The Armor of Light asserts that even in the face of heartbreak, outrage, and political affiliations, it is possible for people to evolve their opinions, and potentially come together to find common ground. Tickets $8. photo: Jeff Hutchens

Upcoming movies With many Oscar-contenders coming out this month, the slate of films heading to The Little includes plenty of stars and compelling stories. East Avenue will be your spot to watch Jennifer Lawrence in Joy, Quentin Tarantino’s newest film The Hateful Eight, Leonardo DiCaprio’s raw, unfiltered turn in The Revenant, and more.
