WXXI’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY

ASSOCIATES DINNER WXXI named Justin Vigdor the 2016 Associate of the Year and honored Nancy Brush with its 2016 President’s Award during WXXI’s 50th Anniversary Associates Dinner at the Country Club of Rochester in November. The dinner featured special guest speaker, American puppeteer Caroll Spinney, who has played Sesame Street’s Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch for more than four decades.

JUSTIN VIGDOR

was presented the Associate Award, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions in support of WXXI’s mission of public service. He and his wife Louise are original members, supporting WXXI since 1966. In addition to his personal support, as a Trustee of the Ames-Amzalak Memorial Trust, Justin has helped secure significant grant funding for WXXI operations, as well as for special projects and campaigns. He has been a tireless champion and a valued partner to WXXI and the Little Theatre. Justin is an attorney with Bond Schoeneck and King, and has served as President of the New York State Bar and Monroe County Bar Associations.

NANCY BRUSH

received the President’s Award, which honors an individual who exemplifies the spirit of collaboration toward the WXXI mission, makes a contribution to WXXI programming, and/or demonstrates exceptional commitment, creativity, and leadership. An original WXXI member, Nancy began her involvement with the station as a volunteer—working the auctions at the old East High School. She then served on the Board of Trustees and later joined the staff, eventually becoming the Vice President for Development. She oversaw the funding for the addition to the State Street studios and developed WXXI’s Planned Giving program. She continues to be a trusted advisor and a supportive donor.

DEAR FRIENDS, As we enter 2017, a great New Year’s resolution to make is to be more involved in your community and to have a better awareness of how others live their lives. This January is a perfect time to start, since Norm Silverstein that’s when we join our good friends at Al Sigl Community of Agencies for our annual Dialogue on Disability initiative, January 23-29. For more than a decade we have provided special programs that spotlight the abilities of people with disabilities and encourage community dialogue about the vital role inclusion plays in our community. This year we’re hosting a free screening of Gabe, about a young man with muscular dystrophy, at the Little Theatre on Wednesday, January 25 at 6:30 p.m. You’ll find details about the film on the cover of this magazine and a list of TV and radio specials planned for the week on the following pages. We will also have news reports and community conversations on Connections with Evan Dawson, plus special programming on Classical 91.5. The vital work of Dialogue on Disability has served as a model for our current partnership with the Golisano Foundation and our Move to Include initiative. Move to Include allows us to continue to present special TV and radio programming, news features, film screenings with panel discussions, and other offerings that engage our audiences and promote inclusion throughout the year. To learn more about both Dialogue on Disability and Move to Include, and how you can help make a difference, visit WXXI.org/include. January also marks a new season of Masterpiece Mystery’s Sherlock! The series returns Sunday, January 1 at 9 p.m. on WXXI-TV, with three brand-new episodes that promise laughter, tears, shocks, surprises and extraordinary adventures. If you don’t have a chance to catch it on New Year’s Day, we’re also hosting Sherlock Sunday, a marathon of Sherlock on Sunday, January 8, beginning at 11 a.m., where we’ve scheduled all three episodes of season three, followed by the 90-minute special, The Abominable Bride, and episode one and two of season four. As we say goodbye to 2016 we will remember it as the kick-off to WXXI’s golden anniversary. We have been celebrating since September 6, commemorating the day we signed on the air with Julia Child (September 6, 1966), by broadcasting that same chocolate mousse episode. We also hosted a Founders’ Breakfast and a 50th anniversary Open House, and brought in Caroll Spinney, the American puppeteer who has played Sesame Street’s Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch since 1969, for our annual Associates Event. We’ll continue our 50th anniversary celebration through September 2017 with some exciting events, which I promise to share with you soon. Until then, I wish you and your family a Happy New Year! Best regards,

Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org | @normWXXI

NEWS&EVENTS

Q&A WITH A WXXI UNDERWRITER Would your dream job be tasting hundreds of wines every month? It’s just part of the daily routine for Matt Yaeger, co-owner and general manager of Pinnacle Wine & Liquor, located just west of Twelve Corners on Monroe Avenue. Matt tells us more about his family’s business.

Q. What is your favorite aspect of your work? I love helping customers find new wines that offer tremendous value. Working with dozens of boutique importers, we are able to source wines that often aren’t available anywhere else. I enjoy helping folks put together a mixed case of wines that are handcrafted by real people who work their vineyards every day. It is an honor to represent these great farmers and vignerons.

Q. Which wines go with Chinese food? Gruner Veltliner, a high acid, dry white from Austria. For super spicy foods I love a riesling from the Finger Lakes with a little bit of residual sugar!

MATT YAEGER, CO-OWNER AND GENERAL MANAGER OF PINNACLE WINE & LIQUOR

Q. What wine would you suggest having on hand for both special and unexpected occasions? Sparkling wine! Whether it’s a holiday or just celebrating the end of the work week, champagne/prosecco/cava is such a perfect treat and pairs well with almost any kind of food.

Q. Tell us about your Events Planning and Tastings. Our event planning service has exploded over the last year in part because of the trending shift away from traditional wedding reception venues and towards creative event spaces. Most of these venues have a “BYOB” alcohol policy. Our service revolves around simplifying the party planning process when it comes to wine and spirits. We offer personal guidance on how much to buy, as well as custom recommendations on specific wines to buy based on the food being served, your preferences, and budget. Consultation requests can be submitted right through our website. We also offer weekly wine tastings on Friday and Saturday afternoons.

This documentary chronicles the life, career, and legacy of American piano virtuoso and recording artist Malcolm Frager. Malcolm studied with Carl Friedberg in New York City from 1949 until Friedberg’s death in 1955. He won the Piano Competition in Geneva (1955), the Michaels Memorial Award in Chicago (1956), and the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition in Brussels (1960). In 1978, Malcolm visited the Jagiellonian Library in Kraków, Poland where he persuaded librarians to make available a cache of more than one thousand original manuscripts missing (and believed lost) since World War II. One summer’s evening, two ageing writers, Hirst and Spooner, meet in a Hampstead pub and continue their drinking into the night at Hirst’s stately house nearby. As the pair become increasingly inebriated, and their stories increasingly unbelievable, the lively conversation soon turns into a revealing power game, further complicated by the return home of two sinister younger men.
