Dear Friends, I hope you and your family enjoy the “4th of July” celebrations here in Rochester, or wherever you may be over the long weekend. WXXI-TV will celebrate with an annual favorite, A Capitol Fourth, which is broadcast live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol on Saturday, July 4 at 8:00 p.m. (and repeated at 9:30 p.m.). Norm Silverstein This year marks the 35th anniversary of the broadcast and it promises to be an all-star musical extravaganza that puts you front and center for the greatest display of fireworks anywhere in the nation. In addition to being a traditional broadcast honoring the country, A Capitol Fourth is also part of WXXI’s Veterans Connections initiative that is designed to help bridge military and veteran needs with community support and awareness. Through special TV, radio and online programming, documentary films, group discussions, news features, and a comprehensive website (WXXI.org/veterans), Veterans Connections works to create a community platform to raise awareness and connect veterans with important resources. I encourage you to visit the website to learn more about the initiative, and to join us at the Little Theatre on August 10 for a special screening of Service: When Women Come Marching Home, which highlights the special challenges facing disabled female veterans as they transition from active duty to civilian life. (Details about the screening are on the back cover.) I’m also proud to announce that our newsroom brought home eight awards from the New York State Associated Press Association at the association’s annual awards ceremony in Saratoga Springs, New York last month. “Schools for South Sudan”, a WXXI-TV series reported by Hélène Biandudi Hofer, received the 1st place award for Best News Series. Hofer traveled to South Sudan to explore the issues of education, diversity, and racism in the war-torn country and compared them to the issues faced locally in Rochester, NY. The series was supported in part by The Community Foundation. If you missed it when it premiered on WXXI-TV, you can watch it online at: wxxinews.org/topic/schools-south-sudan. WXXI also brought home seven ‘Special Mention Awards’ for the following: WXXI-TV – Best News Special/Documentary – Human Trafficking in Monroe County; WXXI-Radio – Best News Series – Lessons from July 64; WXXI-Radio – Best Interview – Sharp Ears: Rochester’s Top Musicians Guide You to the Artists Most Worth Your Time; WXXI-Radio – Best Enterprise Reporting – New Ban the Box Ordinance Aims to Help More Locals Find Work; WXXI-Radio – Best Feature – Artist Transforms MRI Exam Experience Through Musical Collaboration & Rocking With Bach and The Gang; and WXXI-Radio – Best Website – Understanding the Affordable Care Act. Congratulations to News Director Randy Gorbman and his team, as well as our Classical 91.5 announcers and arts reporters, for their awardwinning work and their on-going commitment to keeping us informed with in-depth coverage of local news. Their talent and dedication is what sets our news and public affairs coverage apart. Of course, it is your membership support that keeps WXXI strong. Thank you, and enjoy your Independence Day holiday! Best regards,
Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org @normWXXI
NEWS&EVENTS
Q&A WITH A WXXI Underwriter Seabreeze Amusement Park has been a favorite summertime regional destination for generations. John Norris, Vice President, explains its enduring appeal. Q. How would you describe Seabreeze? How long has the park been in operation? Seabreeze is a family-oriented amusement park and waterpark, located on the bluffs overlooking Lake Ontario and Irondequoit Bay. The park is entering its 136th season of operation. Q. As the 4th oldest amusement park in America, what has been a significant factor to its longevity? One of the most significant factors is that it has been owned and operated by the same family since the 1940’s. The first generation came to Seabreeze in 1904 as carousel concessionaires, the fifth generation now manages the park, and the sixth generation is also actively involved. Q. What is the annual attendance at Seabreeze? Any idea about the number of hot dogs sold? Seabreeze entertains hundreds of thousands of people from Rochester, the Finger Lakes, Syracuse, and Southern Tier areas. Last year the park sold 49,416 hot dogs! Q. What separates Seabreeze from other amusement parks in the Northeast? We have a strong appeal to young families. We’re not too small and not too big. There’s also a sense of history and tradition at Seabreeze, with generations of families visiting the park, seeing old photos and classic rides, and making new memories. Q. What would you like the WXXI audience to know about Seabreeze? If you haven’t visited the park in the past few years, so much has changed! The best days to visit are weekdays. On Mondays all summer, senior citizens get a free Spectator Pass which allows them access to the grounds. Q. What do visitors feel is the most nostalgic ride at the park? The Jack Rabbit is the oldest continuously operating roller coaster in America. It serves as a true “rite of passage” for children when they reach 48 inches tall and can finally ride! Q. What is the most popular ride/attraction at Seabreeze? It’s a tie between the Jack Rabbit and the Whirlwind, our spinning steel roller coaster. A close third is everyone’s favorite, the Bumper Cars.

When you receive a letter or call about the “Go Public” Campaign we hope you will consider an investment in the future of WXXI.
DRIVING MISS DAISY FRIDAY, JULY 17 AT 9 PM ON WXX-TV
Alfred Uhry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, a 2010 hit on Broadway, comes to WXXI-TV with stunning performances by Angela Lansbury and James Earl Jones. Timeless, searing, and funny, the play is told through the complex relationship between two of popular culture’s most enduring characters. When Daisy Werthan, a widowed, 72-year-old Jewish woman living in midcentury Atlanta, is deemed too old to drive, her son hires Hoke Colburn, an African American man, to serve as her chauffeur. What begins as a troubled and hostile pairing, soon blossoms into a profound, life-altering friendship that transcends all the societal boundaries placed between them.

Capitol Steps: Politics Takes a Holiday July 4th Edition The Capitol Steps will address timely issues set to show tunes! There’s John Kerry singing “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Crimea?” and Hillary Clinton admonishing Joe Biden to “Let it Go” when it comes to running for President. It’s a show so clogged with jokes that Chris Christie threatened to shut it down! There’s plenty of material to go around so why not sit back, relax and forget you voted for any of the people mentioned in our special! Not for the faint of heart or for those considering running for office.

Poetry isn’t just words on a page. It’s a form that lets people express themselves in a way that’s often far more deep, emotional, and complex than other forms of communication. Today’s episode, “The Poems, The Poets, The Power,” explores why we write and perform poems and the venues poets find themselves. This show features poets from New York and across the United States.
The State of the Re:Union team brings you a collection of stories from the road. Host Al Letson reflects on the show and plays some of his favorite stories mixed with unheard interviews. We’ll also hear a story about a road trip that completely shifted Al’s life.
In the last episode of State of the Re:Union, the team brings you a collection of our favorite stories from the road. Host Al Letson reflects on six years of State of the Re:Union and says goodbye to the show.

TIME SENSITIVE MATERIAL
WXXI and the Veterans Outreach Center are pleased to host a FREE screening of Service: When Women Come Marching Home, a documentary depicting the courage of several women veterans as they transition from active duty to civilian life. The film follows the veterans from Afghanistan to Tennessee, and Iraq to New York City, as they struggle with homelessness, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, prosthetics, and military sexual trauma. The documentary is told through the veterans’ voices as they speak from their kitchens, bedrooms, grocery stores, and therapy sessions, struggling to find their way home. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion. For more details visit WXXI.org/veterans.
Monday, August 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Little Theatre This screening is part of WXXI’s Veterans Connections initiative that is designed to help bridge military and veteran needs with community support and awareness. Through special TV, radio and online programming, documentary films, group discussions, news features, and a comprehensive web site (WXXI.org/veterans), Veterans Connections works to create a community platform to raise awareness and connect veterans with valuable resources.
