At the Associated Press Association Awards banquet, WXXI Radio won 1st Place in the Spot Norm Silverstein News category for coverage of the Genesee Street Boys and Girls Club shootings in August 2015. Multiple news stories, as well as WXXI’s daily talk show Connections with Evan Dawson, covered the tragedy that took three lives and injured four others. The WXXI News Team that worked on this special coverage included: Veronica Volk, Randy Gorbman, Beth Adams, Michelle Faust, and Evan Dawson. WXXI-TV’s Innovation Trail reporter, Sasha-Ann Simons, won 1st Place in the Best Feature category for her story Crackdown on Silicosis. The feature looked at how OSHA plans to reduce silica dust exposure for construction workers, and if the efforts are too late. WXXI-TV’s Hélène Biandudi Hofer won a Special Mention in the Best Public Service category for her Need to Know feature Rochester’s Poverty Crisis. The special segment examined how one of the first “boomtowns” in America, an area rich in colleges and universities, arts and philanthropy, has become synonymous with poverty. Need to Know is WXXI’s weekly news and public affairs show, which airs Thursdays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 11:30 a.m. on WXXI-TV. WXXI’s Vice President of Radio, Jeanne Fisher, won a Special Mention in the Best Use of Sound category for Change Ringing in Rochester. The segment shares details about a set of ten new bells that were installed in the tower of the Church of Ascension. Add four New York State Emmy Awards, a national daytime Emmy nomination for Second Opinion, and other recognition for our programs and services, and I hope you agree we have a lot to be proud of!

What’s next for WXXI? This month the Republican National Convention and the Democratic National Convention get underway and WXXI will bring you special coverage from PBS NewsHour and NPR. The two will join forces to leverage the work of their political reporters and analysts to provide coverage that informs and engages voters and encourages a more civil electoral discussion. Special convention coverage will be anchored by the PBS NewsHour’s Judy Woodruff and Gwen Ifill with NPR reporters on the convention floors talking with delegates and elected officials. (For more information, please visit WXXInews.org.) Our own Capitol Bureau Correspondent, Karen DeWitt, will be reporting live from both conventions, while our news reporters at home will continue to bring you in-depth news on matters that mean the most to you. Congratulations to our award-winning News Team for their dedication to telling stories in compelling and respectful ways. That’s exactly what you’ll find in our “Finding Tammy Joy” podcast. Co-hosted and produced by WXXI News’ Veronica Volk and Democrat and Chronicle’s Gary Craig, the podcast looks at a three-decade old, unsolved murder case of a 16-year-old girl found dead in an upstate New York cornfield. The podcast has had impressive listener numbers – more than 35,000, and Wired Magazine named it one of five must listen to podcasts. If you haven’t subscribed to this podcast, I encourage you to do so at iTunes or GooglePlay, or listen at WXXInews.org. If you’re looking for a break from the public affairs arena, there’s no better time than summertime to catch a film at the Little Theatre. Some of the best movies of the year roll out over the summer months and The Little’s line-up of independent and foreign films makes it a go-to destination. And don’t just take my word for it – the Rochester Business Journal noted that The Little is the #5 Cultural Attraction in the region, with more than 220,000 attendees in 2015.

Valid for 2-for-1 admission during July excludes Friday & Saturday evenings. Reservations required. Call (585) 325-4370 to reserve tickets. Subject to availability.

There’s so much to enjoy in Rochester this time of year. I hope you able to take advantage of all that this season has to offer. Best regards,

NEWS&EVENTS

Q&A WITH A WXXI UNDERWRITER “We started with all of our favorite things to eat, and then gradually tweaked them over time to create the current menu.” According to co-owner Aaron Metras, this was how the comfort food menu came about at Nox Cocktail Lounge. Here’s more about this English-style pub at the Village Gate Square. Q. What is the meaning behind the name “nox?” Nox is the Latin word for “night,” as well as the Wand-Extinguishing Charm spell from the Harry Potter books. We felt this reference was appropriate for a literary-themed cocktail bar, especially since we are all Harry Potter fans. Q. The gourmet-style comfort foods and cocktails you create are built on a theme. How did that come about? We are all kind of nerds at heart so we tried to come up with items that reflected our general love for geekiness. Co-owners James and Corinne Black found ways to connect the food names to literature. James created all of the drinks on the menu from scratch so they are items you won’t find anywhere else. Q. Any favorite events at nox to date? Plans for July? We do a weekly “Geeks who Drink” PubQuiz on Sundays which has been a huge hit. We have had great partnerships with some of our local staples and always have events going on with them like our Writers and Books readings. We also have unique local artists whose work rotates throughout nox. Keep your eyes peeled for our Steampunk ball coming up in September! Metras added: “We love that we are able to work with WXXI as we feel it is a great source of information in our area. Underwriting with WXXI is the only form of ‘advertising’ that has caused people to come in and say ‘we came in because we heard about you on NPR/WXXI.’ ” www.noxcocktail.com CO-OWNER AARON METRAS

The Great British Baking Show is back for a whole new season! Follow the trials and tribulations of passionate amateur bakers whose goal is to be named the U.K.’s best. Each week, the bakers tackle a different skill, the difficulty of which increases as the competition unfolds. Mary Berry, a leading cookbook writer, and Paul Hollywood, a top artisan baker, serve as judges. Together with hosts and comic foils Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc, Berry and Hollywood search for the country’s best amateur baker by testing the competitors’ skills on cakes, breads, pastries and desserts, crowning a winner after 10 weeks of competition. THE LEGEND OF THE CENTURY

PRINCE PHILIP

THE PLOT TO MAKE A KING SUNDAY, JULY 31 AT 7PM ON WXXI-TV This hour-long special tells the inside story of the fierce tensions unleashed when the Queen fell in love with Prince Philip – tensions that would place huge strain on the royal marriage, and would shape the future of Elizabeth’s reign. The film reveals, for the first time, the complexities and frustrations of the Royal marriage as the Queen struggled to reconcile the love of her husband with the suspicions of her family and her government.

SATURDAY, JULY 2 AT 10PM ON WXXI-TV REPEATS 7/24 AT 2PM

With a career that spanned more than seven decades and a personal life marred by scandal, British actor and filmmaker Charlie Chaplin remains one of Hollywood’s most iconic—and controversial — figures. In the comprehensive 90-minute documentary Chaplin: The Legend of the Century, French writers Laurent Delahousse and Laurent Seksik pair with director Frederic Martin to explore the life and legacy of one of cinema’s greatest contributors, chronicling his impoverished early life in Victorian England, his Hollywood success and offscreen notoriety, and his ultimate exile from the United States during the Cold War.
