SISTER ACT SATURDAY, JUNE 6
AT 8 PM ON WXXI-TV
Beginning with the pioneering and influential Boswell Sisters in the 1920s, sister acts became popular attractions in American music with radio, film, stage and record performances that enchanted audiences with sweetly harmonic love songs and bouncy novelty numbers. Join hosts Kathy Lennon of the Lennon Sisters and Tina Cole of The Four King Cousins, for this new MY MUSIC special dedicated to the sweet, sentimental sounds of sibling singing groups including the Andrews Sisters, the McGuire Sisters, the Lennon Sisters, the King Sisters and others. Sister Act encores on Sunday, June 7 at 5 p.m. on WXXI-TV. The King Sisters offer their romantic interpretations of “It’s Easy to Remember” and “Imagination.” Credit: Courtesy of Polly O Entertainment

June’s MemberCard Plus Benefit
Seneca Park Zoo
Dear Friends, Thanks to more than a thousand listeners who pledged their support to WXXI’s stations, we had another successful radio membership campaign in May! Being able to talk to listeners about what sets public radio apart is always rewarding, but just as gratifying is hearing from callers as they shared why they decided to become members. For example:
Norm Silverstein
WXXI is an indispensable part of my family’s life, keeping us informed and entertained on a daily basis. The least I can do to support a service I use so frequently, is to try to ensure that WXXI will be available for years to come. The variety of classical music on 91.5 is amazing. Explanations regarding the composers, conductors and orchestras are extremely informative and educational. It’s a great way to keep functioning as lifelong learners. WXXI News and WRUR are my go-to stations during most times of the day. And giving a little every month is the least I can do – paying month to month for the services I enjoy. Thanks for being such a great resource for our community. That’s exactly what we strive to be – a resource for you and our community. Our news team keeps you informed by providing in-depth local news while NPR shares stories from around the world. Our Classical 91.5 music hosts share beautiful music from world-renowned artists with you throughout the day. WRUR-FM introduces you to an eclectic array of artists and keeps you up to date with the local music scene. By serving the Finger Lakes with WEOS-FM in Geneva and WITH-FM in Ithaca, public radio has grown to become a vital part in lives across the region. While we’re dedicated to engaging our audiences, we’re also committed to actively being part of our community. That’s why the Little Theatre is an official Club Pass venue for the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival. We’ll be hosting 18 concerts in Theatre 1 and will have free music in The Little Café throughout the festival. Meanwhile, if you want to enjoy air-conditioned entertainment, we will still have four theaters screening the best independent films in Rochester. WXXI’s booth will be stationed at the hub of the Festival site at the corner of Main Street and Jazz Street, where you can pick up information on what’s planned nightly at The Little. Our TV crews will also be on site recording the newest season of our national Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival series at Kilbourn Hall, as well as shooting the sights and sounds throughout the streets and venues. Our news team will be reporting live from the Festival (you can hear those reports on AM 1370 and WRUR-FM). Finally, if you get home from the Festival and want more jazz — tune in to WXXI-TV at midnight for rebroadcasts of classic episodes of our Jazz Festival series. The programs are marked in the TV grid of this magazine. I hope to see you on Jazz Street during the Festival – at Kilbourn Hall for a concert, or at The Little for music and movies – because no matter where you go during those nine days in June, WXXI will be there!

Q&A WITH A WXXI Underwriter Primitive Pursuits, located in Ithaca, offers a variety of nature-based educational programs. Outdoor activities range from birding to winter survival skills. Co-director Tim Drake explains more about the organization founded in 2000: Q. How would you describe Primitive Pursuits? A. Primitive Pursuits on the surface is a nature connection program. Dig a little deeper and you see it’s also a personal development program. Digging even deeper, you find a foundation for cultural healing. Q. What would you like the WXXI audience to know about Primitive Pursuits? A. Primitive Pursuits, though rooted firmly in youth development, has grown to offer a wide variety of adult programs. We were all kids once! Q. What types of camps and programs are available at Primitive Pursuits? A. Adult programs range from stand-alone weekend workshops heavy in the primitive skills to 200plus Wilderness Skills Instructor Certification Courses. Youth programs include summer camps and school break programs, home school and afterschool programs, leadership classes, and more. Q. Which of your programs offers the most unique experience or has gained the greatest response? A. Of late our year-round Forest Preschool program. Although there are relatively few like it in the United States, it is very common in several northern European countries. Q. Primitive Pursuits provides an opportunity to reconnect with nature. Do you feel that former students find a way to incorporate what they learn in their typical technology and social media-focused lives? A. Thankfully yes! We have been around for 15 years now, and we often hear back from alumni. For some the program has set a solid foundation for prioritizing time spent outside. Also, there is awareness that with such a practice there is a certain peace of mind that can’t be found anywhere else. For others the program has influenced their career paths and course of studies at university levels. At Ithaca College where we teach, we have had several former Primitive Pursuits alumni return as college students and then begin their careers with us. www.primitivepursuits.com Co-director Tim Drake

CAMPAIGN UPDATE Thanks to the generous support of good friends like you, we are approaching the $15 million mark on the Go Public Campaign for the future of WXXI and The Little Theatre. Much work has already been done to improve our service to the community:
AM Transmitter
Gifts to the Community Program Fund are allowing us to acquire new programs from PBS and other distributors, produce local documentaries, news, education, and arts programming. Bequests and direct donations to the WXXI and Little Endowment Funds will ensure that the future for both organizations is secure. If you have already made a gift to the Go Public Campaign, THANK YOU! If you would like to make a gift to ensure the future of WXXI and The Little, please go to wxxi.org/gopublic.
Theater 2
At WXXI, we have installed a new editing system that has enabled us to produce programs such as Paley on Park Avenue: NYC, Music for Life: The Story of New Horizons, and Second Opinion. The transmitter that powers WXXI’s AM signal for more than thirty years has been replaced with a new Nautel transmitter. The Nautel, which is smaller than a refrigerator, was installed at our French Road transmitter site in Brighton in April. So, for the listener the Nautel promises a better, clearer, and more reliable sound. At the Little, we have installed digital projectors, sound systems, and screens in all five theaters. Here in the birthplace of film, we are preserving our ability to screen archival films by building a 35 mm reel-to-reel projector. Little 2 also has new seats, lighting, carpeting, and yes—cup holders!

Almost 40 years ago Captain Ross Poldark galloped across the TV screens of millions of PBS viewers, vexing villains and winning female hearts in one of MASTERPIECE’s earliest hit series, Poldark. Now the gallant captain rides again in a thrilling new version with all the action, adventure, and romance of the original, plus even more spectacular Cornish scenery and rousing local color.

TUESDAY, JUNE 23 AT 9:30 PM on wxxi-tv For many, the name Michael Graves is synonymous with the “whistling bird” Alessi teakettle and an array of affordably stylish household products bearing the Graves Design imprint at Target stores. But Graves was also a renowned architect who transformed America’s built environment with buildings in the 1980s that took a whimsical approach to classical forms. In early 2003, in the midst of his successful career, a mysterious and potentially fatal illness left him partially paralyzed. Graves survived after undergoing years of painful rehab, but his ordeal opened an unexpected new chapter in his illustrious career‑‑‑ designing hospital furniture and homes for wounded war veterans. His goal was to transform traditionally cold institutions into environments that promote healing.
Grammy-nominated musician Joey DeFrancesco will get you groovin’ as he gives an energizing performance on his organ.
This program is part of MOVE TO INCLUDE, a partnership between WXXI and the Golisano Foundation designed to stimulate community dialogue about the perspectives of people with physical and intellectual disabilities. To learn more and share your thoughts about the power of inclusion, visit MoveToInclude.org.
The series, distributed by American Public Television, is supported in part by The Louis S. and Molly B. Wolk Foundation. For more information, visit WXXI.org/jazz.
Diane Schuur airs Tuesday, June 9 at 9pm Grammy® Award-winning vocalist and pianist Diane Schuur inspires the audience with music off her album I Remember You (With Love To Stan and Frank).

1913: SEEDS OF CONFLICT TUESDAY, JUNE 30 AT 9PM ON WXXI-TV
Most observers consider the Balfour Declaration and Mandate period of the 1920s as the origin of today’s Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Breaking new ground, 1913: SEEDS OF CONFLICT, a one-hour documentary directed by filmmaker Ben Loeterman, explores the divergent social forces growing in Palestine before World War I, when Arabs and Jews co-existed in harmony as Ottomans, each yearning for a land to call their own. credit: Courtesy of Matson Collection, Library of Congress

AM 1370 Specials Intelligence Squared US: Is Obama’s Iran deal good for America?
SUNDAY, JUNE 7 AT 9PM ON AM 1370 In April 2015, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany, negotiated an interim nuclear accord with Iran. Among the key parameters: Iran’s enrichment capacity, enrichment levels, and stockpile would be limited; its Fordow site converted into a research center; and the Arak heavy water reactor redesigned. In return, the IAEA would gain greater access for inspections, and U.S. and EU sanctions would be lifted. Is this agreement a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to halt nuclear proliferation, or does President Obama have this wrong?
Intelligence Squared US: Should states be required to license same-sex marriages? v SUNDAY, JUNE 14 AT 9PM ON AM 1370 Traditional marriage, between one man and one woman, has existed for millennia, and until recently, States always adhered to the traditional definition. But does this traditional practice violate the Constitution? The Equal Protection Clause
State of the Re:Union
Ithaca, NY: Power to the People The climate is going haywire, and politicians are bickering over what to do about it, or whether to do anything at all. But that’s only part of the story. Around the country, communities are taking matters into their own hands, publicly pledging to shrink their carbon footprints, then setting out to make good on their promises. Leading, they hope, from below. In this hour, guest producer Jonathan Miller gives us a tour of his uber-progressive but practical-minded hometown of Ithaca, New York, where citizens and civic leaders are hustling to wean themselves from fossil fuels. Through a series of connected stories, tinged with gentle humor, Miller looks at the technical, political, physical, and emotional work involved in trying to steer the future in an environmentally responsible direction.
State of the Re:Union : Ithaca, NY: Power to the People SUNDAY, JUNE 21 AT 9PM ON AM 1370
of the 14th Amendment provides: “No State shall... deny to any person within its jurisdiction theequal protection of the laws.” And now, the Supreme Court is poised to answer the question of whether this Clause requires States to jettison the traditional definition and license marriages between two people of the same sex. Does the Equal Protection Clause require States to license same-sex marriages?
State of the Re:Union : San Gabriel Valley, CA: Small Town, Global City Sunday, JUNE 28 at 9 pm on am 1370
Just like any other suburb in America, life in thhe San Gabriel Valley revolves around family and school; the social fabric is woven over cheap eats at the mall. But unlike most American suburbs, the “SGV” is home to the largest Chinese diaspora in the country. In this episode, we explore the kaleidoscope of American stories unfolding in this Southern California bubble, from the Buddhist temple that’s nurturing a budding Boy Scout troop to the cemetery that’s welcoming migrants, even after death. Through the stories of the locals, we’ll discover what belongingness, identity, and community means inside ethnoburb America.

WRUR is a partnership of the University of Rochester and WXXI Public Broadcasting
Liz Michael, host of The Electric Circus –
Tuesday nights from 6-8 – passed away on April 12, 2015 after a long and valiant battle with cancer.
WRUR Lost a Good Friend and a Great DJ
Liz had a wonderful history with WRUR and WXXI. While attending the University of Rochester, she hosted the first iteration of The Electric Circus, and then The Folk Lunch. After college she worked for WXXI, producing Fascinatin’ Rhythm and arts features, and hosting 1370 Jazz Nite on WXXI-AM. Liz hosted the All Weather Lunch on WRUR for four years, and then she created the second iteration of The Electric Circus. She continued to host the show throughout her illness, because she loved music and radio, and she loved sharing her passion with listeners. We are saddened by her death. She will be sorely missed.

wxxi&LITTLE
The Little was born in the jazz age,
JAZZ
so when the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival rolls around, we like to whoop it up! Thanks to Freed Maxick, Theater 1 is an official venue for the festival this year (performance details can be found at rochesterjazz.com) and of course we will be hosting free performances in our café, along with hot food and cold drinks. Did you know Orange Glory, the favorite lunchtime spot of many East Avenue passers-by, is now supplying several dining options every night in the Café? The response has been tremendous and we sell out consistently, so be sure to get here early to find great parking and eat great food before the music starts!
IT UP AT THE LITTLE! The centerpiece of our festival offerings this year will be
Salena’s Sangriaville. After wild success last year, we’re not only continuing the easygoing sangria bar and outdoor seating – we’re moving it to East Avenue. One of our tenants next to the front theatre has moved to a new lcoation, so for the duration of the Jazz Fest, we’re taking over the space to serve Salena’s cold, sweet, deliciously fruity sangria. We hope to see you here!
CLASSICAL 91.5 PRESENTS…

SATURDAY, JUNE 13 AT 3 P.M. AT THE LITTLE TICKETS: $6
NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE:
: SEYMOUR AN INTRODUCTION
Join Classical 91.5 host Julia Figueras for Seymour: An Introduction, part of WXXI’s Classical 91.5 Presents film series. In the film, you’ll meet Seymour Bernstein: a beloved pianist, teacher and true inspiration who shares eye-opening insights from an amazing life. In this wonderfully warm, witty, and intimate tribute from his friend, Ethan Hawke, Seymour shares unforgettable stories from his remarkable life and words of wisdom, as well as insightful reflections of art, creativity, and the search for fulfillment. The film will be followed by a short discussion of the music in the movie. Come early at 2pm to hear ensembles from the Eastman Community Music School in The Little Café. Classical 91.5 Presents a series that spotlights classical music connections in film. Selected by our Classical music hosts Julia Figueras, Brenda Tremblay and Mona Seghatoleslami, the films chosen exemplify the power of music in a non-traditional narrative. The series is supported in part by:
MAN AND SUPERMAN
What would you do if you met the Devil himself? A romantic comedy, an epic fairytale, a fiery philosophical debate, the National Theatre Live presentation of Man and Superman asks fundamental questions about how we live. On Sunday, June 7 at 12:00 p.m. and Tuesday, June 9 at 6:30 p.m., The Little is proud to present Man and Superman. Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes (The English Patient, Schindler’s List, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Skyfall) plays Jack Tanner in this exhilarating reinvention of Shaw’s witty, provocative classic. Jack Tanner, celebrated radical thinker and rich bachelor, seems an unlikely choice as guardian to the alluring heiress, Ann. But she takes it in her assured stride and, despite the love of a poet, she decides to marry and tame this dazzling revolutionary. Tanner, appalled by the whiff of domesticity, is tipped off by his chauffeur and flees to Spain, where he is captured by bandits and meets The Devil. An extraordinary dreamdebate, heaven versus hell, ensues. Following in hot pursuit, Ann is there when Tanner awakes, as fierce in her certainty as he is in his. NT Live is really something to see. The best theatre performances from London’s West End are recorded with cameras positioned throughout the theatre, ensuring Little audiences get the best seat in the house every time.
