DEAR FRIENDS, I’m pleased to share the exciting news that WXXI-TV Program Director Irene Fink has been honored with the “Charles Impaglia Programmer of the Year” award by her colleagues from around the country. The recognition came at the PBS Annual Meeting in New Orleans recently.

Norm Silverstein

I can’t think of a more deserving person than Irene, who has been with the station since 1998 and has served as our Program Director for the past nine years. She is responsible for selecting and scheduling all of your favorite programs on WXXI’s television stations and on City 12 (cable 1303 in the City of Rochester). The Public Television Programmers’ Association (PTPA) praised Irene’s ability to weigh all content decisions with her audience and the community in mind, ensuring that our content reaches the widest audiences across multiple platforms. They also applauded her dedication to WXXI’s Move to Include initiative, ensuring that people with disabilities are represented in the station’s programming throughout the year. Move to Include is a partnership between WXXI and the Golisano Foundation, designed to promote inclusion for people with intellectual and physical disabilities. Again, congratulations to Irene! Kudos also to our Education Department and their team, who were recently honored by the New York State Broadcasters Association (NYSBA) for their collaboration with the Rochester Public Library & Monroe County Library System. We received the prestigious “Serving New York” Award in recognition of our Be My Neighbor Day with Daniel Tiger event. More than 3,500 kids and families attended the event at the Central Library last summer. They spent the day meeting local community helpers, such as firefighters, police officers, and community educators, to learn what it means to be a good neighbor. Over 25 community organizations and partner agencies shared information, free resources, and ways to help families improve their health, safety, education, and recreation. This family engagement event is a great example of how WXXI’s Education team works with community partners to support families with lifelong educational opportunities, events and resources. Just a reminder to our Little Theatre fans – restoration of Theatre 1 is underway! Over the next several months we’ll be making historically appropriate capital improvements, including main theatre upgrades, accessibility improvements, and new seating with – yes – cupholders! We’re looking forward to the reopening of this iconic 1920’s Art Deco theatre in October and can’t wait for you to see it. Until then, please remember that theatres 2-5 remain open for you to enjoy American independent and foreign films, as well as the café, featuring great food, art, and live music throughout the week. To find out more about the restoration efforts and how you can help, visit TheLittle.org/BigPicture. Finally – and most importantly – if you pledged your support for public radio during our Spring Membership Campaign, thank you! Membership continues to be our most important source of funding, ensuring the independent service you value and rely on every day continues to be strong. Best wishes for a wonderful summer!

NEWS&EVENTS

Q&A WITH A WXXI UNDERWRITER Woods Oviatt Gilman (WOG) is a full-service law firm representing a broad spectrum of clients – from publicly traded corporations to family-owned businesses and charities. Founded in 1852, the firm has continued to expand and distinguish itself, and now has worldwide reach and offices in Rochester, Buffalo and Phoenix, AZ. WXXI connects with Kelly Beauchamp, marketing director, to learn more about the firm and its history.

Q. How has WOG evolved over the years? We’ve evolved to support the needs of our growing client base and have aligned our structures, systems, processes and culture with the demands of the legal market. With our membership in Meritas Worldwide we are able to provide services for our clients across the globe, while still providing top-level client service. Q. What are some major trends you’re seeing in the industry? Technology. Specifically data security and innovation. With the ongoing threat of information and identity theft, firms need to protect client information. Social media is also playing a big part in how firms market and interact with clients and contacts. Q. Greatest opportunities? We’re lucky to have a diverse client base, and with that comes the opportunity to work with clients on many levels, including the business side of their lives as well as their personal estate planning issues. Q. Why is marketing development so important for attorneys? The legal industry is becoming increasingly competitive, so marketing and business development are key to the growth of the firm and individual attorney’s practices. Having strong brand recognition helps keep our firm’s name relevant in the community. Q. How does WOG “live its brand”? We practice our tagline, “The art of representing people,” every day in our offices and in the community. Client service is of utmost importance to us and is the foundation of everything we do for our clients. We live our brand in the community by supporting hundreds of not-for-profits every year by participating in golf tournaments, walks, galas, concerts, art exhibits and more. Our attorneys and staff are involved in committees, boards, mentoring programs and more. KELLY BEAUCHAMP, WOODS OVIATT GILMAN MARKETING DIRECTOR

THURSDAY, JUNE 21 FROM 11AM TO 3PM GRANITE MILLS AT HIGH FALLS Join WXXI, Classical 91.5 host Brenda Tremblay (right), and her Music Stand as we participate in Make Music Day, a free celebration of music around the world. Brenda and the music stand will be parked at Granite Mills at High Falls at 11 a.m. where she’ll perform a song or two and hope you’ll join her. You can sign up for a performance time slot at Classical915.org/makemusicday. Throughout the day we’ll have an instrument making station, where kids and kids at heart can make an instrument out of recycled materials. And, at 12 p.m. Brenda and the music stand will break so that we can bring you our regularly scheduled Hochstein at High Falls concert series, featuring the Bossa Nova Bradley Brothers. After the concert we’ll bring back the music stand for more Make Music Day performances until 3 p.m. That’s when the music stand moves to the Little Theatre for more performances throughout the East End. PLEASE NOTE: if it rains we will still be outside under a small tent for performances, but we will not have the instrument making station.

MORE ABOUT MAKE MUSIC DAY

Launched in 1982 in France as the Fête de la Musique, Make Music Day is now held on the same day in more than 800 cities in 120 countries. Every kind of musician — young and old, amateur and professional, of every musical persuasion — pours onto streets, parks, plazas, and porches to share their music with friends, neighbors, and strangers. MONDAY, JUNE 25 AT 9PM ON WXXI-TV

FRIDAYS AT 9PM, BEGINNING JUNE 22 ON WXXI-TV Returning for another season, The Great British Baking Show sees twelve of the country’s best amateur bakers battle. Hosted by Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins, the bakers face three challenges each week, devised by judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood.

Transgender teen, Jazz Jennings (right), narrates this documentary where young people interview a host of LGBTQ elders who came out in different historical eras from the 1950s through today. These inspiring talks give insight into the political and personal changes that shaped the modern LGBTQ movement. The young interviewers get an opportunity to compare and contrast their “coming out” experience with people who came out during McCarthy, Civil Rights, post-Stonewall, and AIDS eras. In the end, they learn that every generation of activists stands on the shoulders of those who came before and that activism needs to continue even in the light of great social strides.

SOWING CHAOS – RUSSIA’S DISINFORMATION WAR Revelations of Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election were a shock to Americans. But it wasn’t quite as surprising to people in former Soviet States and the EU. We explore the origins of Russian state media and go inside a Russian Troll farm.

SHOULD NET NEUTRALITY BE SAVED? What if a single policy could impact American democracy, culture, and competitiveness? What if that policy might either empower citizens and consumers, or burden them? And what if the decision on that policy sparked a frenzy of legislative proposals, judicial challenges, and citizen outrage, all across the country?

IS BITCOIN MORE THAN A BUBBLE?

Less than a decade old, Bitcoin is worth billions. Is Bitcoin here to stay, or is it a bubble waiting to pop?

WILL AUTOMATION CRASH DEMOCRACY? Technology is disrupting the workforce, with automation poised to displace humans in the fields of medicine, agriculture, and beyond. Will the rise of robots fuel a new wave of “us versus them” populism capable of undermining democracy?

THE METROPOLITAN OPERA NATION COUNCIL GRAND FINALS CONCERT SATURDAY, JUNE 23 AT 3 PM

The Royal Opera House’s world premiere of Lessons in Love and Violence airs Saturday, June 23 at 1 p.m. Described as “dangerously exciting,” it is predicted to be the “most hotly anticipated opera premiere of the year.” Composer George Benjamin (pictured) conducts his own work inspired by Elizabethan drama. The story centers around a king, compelled to choose between love and political hard-headedness. His decisions provoke a civil war and set his own wife and son against him. The multinational cast includes French baritone Stéphane Degout, Canadian soprano Barbara Hannigan and British tenors Peter Hoare and Samuel Boden. Monthly program highlights at classical915.org

WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR? OPENS JUNE 22 TRAILER AT thelittle.org

FOR OVER 30 YEARS, FRED ROGERS, an unassuming minister, puppeteer, writer and producer was beamed daily into homes across America. In his beloved television program, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Fred and his cast of puppets and friends spoke directly to young children about some of life’s weightiest issues, in a simple, direct fashion. There hadn’t been anything like Mister Rogers on television before and there hasn’t been since. In Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville looks back on the legacy of Fred Rogers, focusing on his radically kind ideas. While the nation changed around him, Mister Rogers stood firm in his beliefs about the importance of protecting childhood.
