SGT. PEPPER’S

MUSICAL

REVOLUTION Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the groundbreaking album that ranks #1 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. This new documentary, from Huge Films and directed by Francis Hanly, conjures up the psychedelic, phantasmagorical world of Sgt. Pepper, provides context for the culture of the day, and shows how the album, which featured classic songs including “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds,” “She’s Leaving Home” and “A Day in the Life,” became a driving force within that culture. Award-winning British composer, author, music historian and broadcaster Howard Goodall hosts.

DEAR FRIENDS, On June 3, the City of Rochester and Monroe County will declare “Be My Neighbor Day” as WXXI, along with our Norm Silverstein partners from the Monroe County Library System and Rochester City School District, host a fun-filled “Be My Neighbor Day” celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Central Library. Themed around WXXI Kids’ Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood series, this free community event will include hands-on learning activities, opportunities to do kind acts for others, interacting with local community helpers, and a special visit from Daniel Tiger himself! Many of our friends, including Foodlink, YMCA, Seneca Park Zoo, Rochester Police Department, and the City’s “Rec on the Move,” will join us for special activities throughout the day. This promises to be a great family-friendly event for kids of all ages. I hope you have a chance to join us, as we celebrate the Rochester community and its many wonderful neighbors. To learn more, visit WXXI.org/events. It’s also becoming impossible to talk about June in Rochester and not mention the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival beginning June 23. You’ll see WXXI’s News Team on “Jazz Street” covering events and activities throughout the Festival and you can hear reports on AM 1370 and WRUR 88.5 FM. Meanwhile, the Little Theatre will once again serve as an official venue. The Little’s theater 1 will stage two Jazz Festival acts per night, which will include Biel Ballester, The Durham County Poets, and RPO Trumpeter Herb Smith. The Little Café will also be open, serving food and beverages, and hosting free live music performed by local favorites. If you get home from the Festival and want more jazz, tune in to WXXI-TV at midnight for rebroadcasts of classic episodes from our Jazz Festival series. Finally – and most importantly – if you were one of more than 1,300 individuals who pledged their support to public radio during our Spring Membership Campaign last month, thank you! Membership continues to be our most important source of funding, ensuring the service you value and rely on every day continues to be strong. During the on-air campaign I invited you to #StandWithWXXI and so many of you did. For that we are grateful and look forward to continuing to earn that loyalty throughout the year! Best wishes for a wonderful summer!

NEWS&EVENTS

Q&A WITH A WXXI UNDERWRITER Steed Energy, LLC designs and installs solar panels for residential and commercial customers throughout Rochester and the Finger Lakes area. Owner Glenn Steed explains what makes his company unique. Q. What inspired you to move into this line of work? I have always felt the need to make a difference in our world and this industry affords me the opportunity to do that every day! Q. What component of the installation process do you enjoy most? Being able to help people get away from fossil fuels and move to a more sustainable and intrinsically valuable energy source, working with high school students to teach them about renewable energy, and meeting new folks and hearing their stories. Q. Is solar for everyone? Recent changes to the utility regulations have opened up the option of solar to so many people. We now have some other options for folks who might not have the space for solar but still want to make a difference. There are new programs which allow you to go solar with very little out of pocket expense, and some great loan programs as well. Q. What are some of the concerns when a client is considering solar energy? The most important thing I do with customers is answer their questions. There are many different brands of solar panels and inverters, and different ways to install them. We do our best to educate the customer to enable them to make the best decision for themselves. We like to think ‘out of the box’ when it comes to solar. Our projects include highly customized installations, from integrated solar on a shipping container building, see-thru solar panels on an awning over a deck, battery based systems, as well as simpler residential and small commercial projects.

GLENN STEED, OWNER

Q. Considering that the technology for solar panels continues to evolve, what can we expect in the future? As the technology advances we are seeing larger wattage out of smaller panels, greater efficiency and monitoring capabilities in inverters, but by far the fastest growing segment of the market right now is battery technology. www.steedenergy.com To learn more about underwriting on WXXI, email underwriting@wxxi.org

INVISIBILIA SUNDAYS AT 9PM

The show is co-hosted by a trio of NPR’s award-winning journalists, Alix Spiegel, Lulu Miller and Hanna Rosin, who have roots at This American Life, Radiolab and The Atlantic.

WEDNESDAYS AT 8PM

TUESDAYS AT 8PM

Travel with Rick Steves is a weekly one-hour conversation about travel, cultures, people, and the things we find around the world that give life its extra sparkle.

Hosted by Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich, Radio Lab is a show about curiosity, where sound illuminates ideas, and the boundaries blur between science, philosophy, and human experience.

Building on Indivisible, public radio’s national convening that spanned the first 100 days of the new administration. This series, hosted by Kai Wright, weaves together reported pieces, unconventional thinking from compelling guests and listener calls.

THURSDAYS AT 8PM

THE POLITICAL JUNKIES FRIDAYS AT 8PM Host Ken Rundin brings a fresh take to political conversation — with energetic discussions, rich history, and plenty of bad jokes. Ken brings his years of campaign experience to the fore as he highlights notable historical moments, and looks ahead to the biggest political stories on the scene.
