ITALIAN

AMERICANS SATURDAY, MARCH 14, 12PM-6PM ON WXXI-TV Enjoy Saturday afternoon learning more about the Italian experience in America with Academy Award-nominated actor Stanley Tucci. The Italian Americans, a fourpart documentary series, traces the evolution of Italian Americans from the late 19th century to today, with Tony Bennett, David Chase, John Turturro, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, Gay Talese and more. It reveals the unique and distinctive qualities of one immigrant group’s experience, and how these qualities, over time, have shaped and challenged America. Unlike other immigrant groups, many Italians did not come to America to stay.

Also airs on WXXI-WORLD Sunday 3/15 at 4pm.

AMERICAN MASTERS JUDY GARLAND: BY MYSELF FRIDAY, MARCH 20 AT 9 P.M. ON WXXI-TV

Judy Garland had one of the most photographed faces ever to come out of Hollywood. With special access to the MGM library, including vaulted screen tests and rehearsal footage, this film is wrapped in Garland’s voice, telling her story in her own words. So many outsiders have tried to tell her story and so many friends and family have weighed in — now Judy gets center stage, all to herself.

Dear Friends, Thank you for your support of our “very short” Winter Membership Campaign for WXXI radio. The campaign started on Groundhog Day, February 2, and was over almost as quickly as the Groundhog saw his Norm Silverstein shadow! That’s because we asked our listeners to pledge their support before the official start date of the drive. With those early pledges, you helped us reach our goal in record time without having to interrupt a week’s worth of program favorites like Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Connections with Evan Dawson and A Prairie Home Companion. I know you agree it’s all about the programming. Providing quality programming that educates, engages, entertains and inspires audiences is always our goal. PBS is helping us reach that goal with some of the best programs on TV. At this year’s Television Critics Press Tour, PBS President Paula Kerger announced that PBS will partner with the BBC and BBC World News in a co-production agreement that will bring 20 hours of new programming to PBS this year. PBS has enjoyed a long history of working with the BBC to bring titles such as Sherlock and Call the Midwife to our audiences, and we’re happy that this partnership means the relationship will continue to grow. We look forward to sharing more information about the new shows as details become available in the coming months. Also announced at the Press Tour was a new PBS American drama series. Inspired by a true story and set in Alexandria, Virginia, this 6-hour hospital drama and family saga is framed against the backdrop of the Civil War. The series follows two volunteer nurses on opposite sides of the conflict and is set in a family-owned hotel that has been taken over and transformed into a Union Army Hospital. Stay tuned for more details and broadcast dates. Speaking of drama, Downton Abbey wraps up Season Five this month. We hope you’ll have a chance to tune in to the season finale on Sunday, March 1. There was a rumor that this might be the last season, but if you’re an avid viewer, you know there is no way they could wrap up the many stories they have spinning this season. I can assure you there will be a Season Six coming in January 2016! Until then, you can look forward to spending nights with other Masterpiece classics like Mr. Selfridge, enjoy the beauty of contemporary dance with the Mark Morris Dance Company in Great Performances: L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato, and end the month engaged by the new Ken Burns documentary, Cancer: Emperor of All Maladies. Again, it’s your support that makes all this incredible programming possible – thank you! Best regards,

Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org @normWXXI

NEWS&EVENTS

Q&A WITH A WXXI Underwriter The Village at Unity is a senior living community that helps residents create an active, independent lifestyle enhanced by a full continuum of care. The community features independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing. “Each resident has priority access to all levels of care,” according to Village Sales Manager Michele Smits. Michele provides more details below. A.

Q. Could you describe The Village at Unity in five words or less? Senior Living Like No Other

Q. What would you like the WXXI audience to know about The Village at Unity? A. The Village at Unity is dedicated to providing our residents with life enrichment activities. Our residents have the opportunity to participate in a variety of fine arts programming—we host a variety of guest speakers and schedule trips for residents to attend stage and music performances. We have a state-of-the-art artist studio, an on-site cinema theatre, a fitness center, and also provide cooking demonstrations. In addition, we have recently partnered with Roberts Wesleyan College so residents can continue their education. Q. Why do you think residents and families choose The Village at Unity? A. We’ve heard from residents and their families that our unique community atmosphere is what makes The Village at Unity so special. We offer all of the amenities and services that most residents need right on campus. Each of our three distinct dining venues offers chef-inspired cuisine and resort-like hospitality, and our events schedule keeps residents busy and engaged. Residents and families also appreciate the piece of mind of having access to the full continuum of care. Q. What is the greatest life lesson or words of wisdom learned from a resident of the Village? A. Our residents have taught me that age is merely a number, and there is a lot of life to live even after you’ve made the transition to a retirement community. There is always an opportunity to start a new journey, try something new, create new friendships. www.thevillageatunity.org Michele Smits, Village Sales Manager

TVHIGHLIGHTS

CANCER THE EMPEROR OF ALL MALADIES MONDAY, MARCH 30-WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1 AT 9 P.M. ON WXXI-TV This “biography” of cancer – from its first documented appearances thousands of years ago through the epic “War on Cancer” in the last century – comes at a moment of inflection in the history of the disease, when scientific breakthroughs have put a cure within reach. The series, produced by Ken Burns, matches the epic scale of the disease, reshaping the way the public sees cancer and stripping away some of the fear and misunderstanding that has long surrounded it. The story of cancer is a story of scientific hubris, paternalism, and misperception, but it is also a story of human ingenuity, resilience, and perseverance. Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies examines cancer with a cellular biologist’s precision, a historian’s perspective, and a biographer’s passion. The series artfully weaves three different films in one: a riveting historical documentary; an engrossing and intimate vérité film; and a scientific and investigative report. This Ken Burns film tells the story of a tiny school in Putney Vermont, the Greenwood School, where each year the students are encouraged to practice, memorize, and recite the Gettysburg Address. In its exploration of the Greenwood School, the film also unlocks the history, context and importance of President Lincoln’s most powerful address. This program is part of MOVE TO INCLUDE, a partnership between WXXI and the Golisano Foundation, designed to build a more inclusive community by inspiring and motivating people to embrace different abilities and include all people in every aspect of community life.

AM 1370 Specials America Abroad: Cuba and America: After The Thaw SUNDAY, MARCH 8 AT 9PM ON AM 1370

President Obama’s announcement to begin normalizing relations with Cuba marks the most significant change in US policy toward the island nation in a half century. But as America looks to make it easier to travel to the country and establish more economic ties, what does that mean for the average Cuban or Cuban American? This special takes an in depth look at how this new thaw affects everyone. Intelligence Squared US: Is Amazon a friend to readers? SUNDAY, MARCH 15 AT 9PM ON AM 1370

In late 2014, Amazon and the publishing house Hachette settled a months-long dispute over who should set the price for e-books. In Amazon’s view, lower prices mean more sales and more readers. But for publishers, the price of an e-book must

Under Her Skin: Living With Breast Cancer

Is this how I’m going to die?” “How do I pay for this?” “Do I still believe in God?” Those are just some of the questions “The Takeaway” explored in Under Her Skin: Living With Breast Cancer. Over the last 30 years, researchers have found a widening survival divide between black and white women diagnosed with the disease. “Under Her Skin” gave listeners a uniquely personal perspective on the survival gap and a new understanding of a disease that will afflict more than 12% of American women at some point in their lives. Over the course of six months, the series shared the stories of three black women fighting breast cancer at varying stages. Each woman documented her experiences in audio diaries, airing on The Takeaway’s affiliates and archived on an interactive website, www. livingwithbreastcancer.org, and this hour long broadcast provides a glimpse into their six-month journeys alongside our show.

reflect the investment made, from the author’s advance to a book’s production. The conflict is resolved for now. But is book publishing an oligopoly? Is Amazon, which accounts for 41% of all new book and 67% of all e-book sales, a monopoly? Intelligence Squared US: SHOULD THE WORLD BET ON AMERICA SUNDAY, MARCH 22 AT 9PM ON AM 1370

America owes $6 trillion to China, our sprawling military complex often appears helpless against disparate threats abroad, and the War on Terror has stripped us of the moral high ground. Washington is paralyzed by bitter partisanship, our children are falling behind their international peers, and our middle class is no longer the world’s most affluent. But we’ve been warned about America’s decline before. Are our best days behind us, or should the world still bet on America? >> Also: Intelligence Squared US: Should the U.S. Adopt The “Right To Be Forgotten” Online? airs Sunday, 3/29 at 9PM

History Month

AT THE LITTLE Sundays in March are for celebrating Women’s History Month at the Little Theatre. We are screening a mix of documentary and narrative films covering some of the most wonderfully revolutionary and productively unsettling figures in our history. Check thelittle.org for details on special speakers after several of the films.

Advanced Style Examines the lives of seven uniquely stylish New Yorkers between 62 and 95 years old whose style challenges conventional ideas about beauty, aging, and Western culture’s obsession with youth. (Documentary)

BOLSHOI BALLET: ROMEO AND JULIET On Sunday, March 15 at 12:00 p.m. and Tuesday, March 17 at 6:30 p.m., The Little is proud to present Russia’s Bolshoi Ballet in a world-class production of Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare’s classic tale of forbidden love is choreographed by Yuri Grigorovich with music direction by Andrei Anikhanov. These dancers are truly among the best in the world. A story with such passion, such youthful expression of love, anger, despair and hope readily lends itself to the physical medium of dance. The Little’s screenings of the Bolshoi Ballet are recorded with cameras positioned throughout the Moscow theatre, ensuring our audiences get the best seat in the house every time. Tickets to the premiere of this show in Moscow run as high as $300. But we’re The Little in Rochester. Tickets here are $15 for Little members, students and seniors and $20 for the general public.

Documents the evolution of Jewish feminism while simultaneously telling the story of Esther Broner, the writer who explored the double marginalization of being Jewish and female. (Documentary)

Sunday March 15 at 3:00 p.m.

Violette Born out of wedlock in the beginning of the 20th century, Violete Leduc falls for another woman, Simone de Beauvoir, in postWorld-War-II Saint-Germain-des-Prés. An intense relationship follows based on a quest for freedom through writing. (Narrative)

Sunday March 15 at 6:30 p.m.

Appropriate Behavior Being part of a perfect Persian family isn’t easy for Shirin. Her family doesn’t know she is bisexual and her ex-girlfriend Maxine doesn’t understand her secrecy. Shirin embarks on a private rebellion of pansexual escapades while trying to decipher what went wrong with Maxine. (Narrative)

Sunday March 22 at 3:00 p.m.

She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry Resurrects the buried history of the outrageous, brilliant women who founded the modern women’s movement from 1966 to 1971. Using dramatizations, performance and archival imagery, stories of women who fought for equality are artfully conveyed. (Documentary)

Sunday March 29 at 3:00 p.m.

Reflections Unheard: Black Women in Civil Rights Personal stories of several black female Civil Rights advocates unearth the lesser-known tale of black women’s marginalization between the male-dominated Black Power movement and the predominantly white middle class Feminist movement. (Documentary)

to Our Radio Drive Volunteers!

Thank you to all the volunteers who braved the February 2 snowstorm to come in and answer phones the morning of our one-day Groundhog Day pledge drive. Most of the staff came in early thinking the volunteers wouldn’t be here, but to our surprise, they were! One volunteer stayed overnight at a hotel to ensure he would be here at 6 am. And another volunteer was upset we ended our drive early… but still dropped off the cookies he made for us. We can’t thank our volunteers enough! Well, one small way we can is to honor you at our annual Volunteer Appreciation Reception on Thursday, April 30. Be sure to save the date!
