PUBLIC TELEVISION & PUBLIC RADIO FOR ROCHESTER
MARCH 2018
TUESDAY, MARCH 6 AT 8PM ON WXXI-TV Enjoy this celebrity-filled, hourlong special that celebrates Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, the pioneering PBS series that premiered nationally 50 years ago and became an iconic and enduring landmark in the world of children’s television. Mister Rogers’ cast members share their personal perspectives and insights about television’s longest-running children’s series, still broadcast on WXXI-TV today. Hosted by Michael Keaton, who worked as a stagehand and made appearances on the series in the 1970s, the program also features interviews with numerous celebrities who have been influenced and inspired by Fred Rogers, a modest man who always said, “I am not a teacher, I simply help children learn.” Favorite segments, such as a visit with Koko the Gorilla, Big Bird’s appearance in the Neighborhood of MakeBelieve, as well as trips to the Crayola Factory and the Radio Flyer Wagon Company, are highlighted.

WXXI IS PROUD TO BE PART OF
AMERICAN GRADUATE: GETTING TO WORK
WXXI is one of 19 public media stations to be awarded a grant
by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to be part of the national American Graduate: Getting to Work initiative. The station collaborative will help to advance education and career readiness in their communities. The two-year initiative will allow stations working with partners in their local communities to assess workforce challenges and opportunities, and produce local content focused on the essential skills needed for students and workers to succeed in the job markets of today and tomorrow. The work will focus on good jobs in high need career sectors that require training beyond high school but less than a four- year degree. According to the National Skills Coalition, middle skills jobs account for 50% of New York’s labor market, but only 38% of the state’s workers are trained for these jobs. The new grants represent the next phase of public media’s American Graduate initiative focused on improving the graduation rates by a continuum of services cradle to career. Over the past six years, the initiative has attracted local business and community leader support and engagement by focusing on keeping young people on the path to success in school and life. This increased focus in “Getting to Work” will help youth and young adults, ages 16-26 years, to find a variety of career pathways to prepare for jobs that currently are going unfilled because of a skills gap and lack of awareness of the opportunities.

DEAR FRIENDS, Did you know that March is “Music in Our Schools Month?” This national celebration is designed to engage music educators, students, and communities to promote the Norm Silverstein benefits of high quality music education programs in schools. At WXXI, we know how important music is to a child’s intellectual and social development, which is why we’re joining the celebration – with Classical 91.5 taking the lead – by providing a variety of on-air and online content. This includes special arts segments and a curated web page where you can share a story, tribute or memory of a music teacher who made a difference in your life. Classical 91.5 is also partnering with the Rochester Education Foundation (REF) to collect musical instruments and supplies for Rochester City School students. If you’d like to be part of this effort, visit Classical915.org to learn more. March is also “Women’s History Month,” and WXXI and the Little Theatre will be bringing you films and programs that spotlight amazing women who have shaped the world we live in. The Little celebrates with its annual film series, presenting a collection of documentary and narrative films about trailblazing women. The series features a film every Wednesday evening throughout the month, including The Piano, Viktoria, Marlina the Murderer, and more. (For complete information on The Little’s Women’s History Month film series, visit: thelittle.org.) WXXI-TV will present several documentaries celebrating women in history including the television premiere of Election Day 2016, from local filmmaker Linda Moroney. Linda came up with the idea just two days before Election Day, pulling together a crew of cinematographers, producers and still photographers from the Rochester Documentary Filmmakers Group. Shooting at Susan B. Anthony’s grave at Mt. Hope Cemetery on Election Day (November 8, 2016), they captured 12 hours of footage, interviewing hundreds of visitors, asking not who they voted for but why they were there. The film has screened at several film festivals including the first-ever Meet the Press Film Festival with the American Film Institute. We are proud to have it make its television debut on WXXI-TV on Saturday, March 3, at 5pm. (To learn more about other Women’s History Month programming on WXXI, visit WXXI.org/wh.) I hope the work we do with and for our community will inspire you to help protect federal funding for public media. Federal dollars help make possible educational services that really make a difference (including our new, 24/7 WXXI Kids Channel). You can do your part by visiting: protectmypublicmedia.org. Take a minute to weigh in with your Members of Congress to let them know how you feel about the value of public media. And as always, thank you for your support!
Best regards,
Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org | @normWXXI
NEWS&EVENTS
Q&A WITH A WXXI UNDERWRITER Celebrating its ten-year anniversary this spring, Abilene Bar & Lounge, a local saloon in downtown Rochester, showcases local and national roots, Americana, rockabilly, and blues artists while serving quality craft beer and cocktails. Owner Danny Deutsch shares insight on his experience with Rochester’s entertainment scene. Q. Favorite part of the job? It’s nice when you see artists develop and build a bond with the local community. I do also enjoy a sold-out show at Abilene.
Q. What’s your dream booking? Do I have to name just one? I’d love to work with Nikki Lane, Parker Millsap, and of course Emmylou Harris. Q. What are the biggest changes you’ve noticed in Rochester’s music scene? It’s growing! Rochester loves live music and we’re truly thankful they occasionally love it here at Abilene. There also seems to be a demand for shows to start earlier and as we go into our 11th season, we’ll be accommodating that as much as we can.
Q. Looking back over the past ten years, what are some of your fondest memories? Too many to share! Abilene provides intimate and personal shows so when acts like Nikki Hill, Dale Watson, and the Blasters come to town, they leave an impression. There was one special afternoon prior to a show when JD McPherson and his band were polishing up a new tune on our little stage. They were working out the kinks, and my bartender and I were able to enjoy the whole thing. You don’t get to experience that every day.
Q. What are your plans for celebrating Abilene’s ten-year anniversary? Our 10th anniversary concert will be with JD McPherson at the Harro East Ballroom on Friday, April 13. The week leading up to the event will be stacked with music and performers our patrons have come to know and love.

The film will be followed by a panel discussion. To learn more, visit WXXI.org/events. Indie Lens Pop-Up is a neighborhood series that brings people together for film screenings and community-driven conversations. MONDAY, MARCH 19 AND TUESDAY, MARCH 20 ON WXXI-TV RAISE THE ROOF I MARCH 19 AT 9PM
Rivaling the greatest wooden architecture in history, the synagogues of 18th-century Poland—the last of which were destroyed by the Nazis— inspired artists Rick and Laura Brown embark on a 10-year pursuit to reconstruct the elaborate roof and painted ceiling of the GwoŸdziec synagogue. Aided by a team of 300 artisans and students, the showstopping building was realized and installed as the centerpiece of the new Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw. CARVALHO’S JOURNEY I MARCH 20 AT 8PM
This film shares the real-life 19th century American western adventure story about Solomon Nunes Carvalho, an observant Sephardic Jew born in 1815 in Charleston, South Carolina. In 1853, traveling with John Fremont’s 5th Westward Expedition through Kansas, Colorado, Utah, and California, Carvalho became one of the first photographers to document the sweeping vistas and treacherous terrain of the far American West. Living alongside mountain men, Native Americans, and Mormons, Carvalho overcame enormous odds to produce beautiful art: daguerreotypes that became the lens through which the world experienced the West. AHEAD OF TIME: THE EXTRAORDINARY JOURNEY OF RUTH GRUBER I MARCH 20 AT 9:30PM For seven decades foreign correspondent and photojournalist Ruth Gruber didn’t just report the news, she made it. Born in 1911 to Russian Jewish immigrants, Ruth became the youngest Ph.D. in the world before becoming an international journalist at age 24. A fearless trailblazer who defied tradition to become the eyes and conscience of the world, she was the first journalist to enter the Soviet Arctic in 1935, traveled to Alaska as a member of the Roosevelt administration in 1942, escorted Holocaust refugees to America in 1944, covered the Nuremberg trials in 1946, and documented the Palestinebound Haganah ship Exodus in 1947. SATURDAY, MARCH 3 AT 5PM ON WXXI-TV
After a long and contentious presidential campaign, on Election Day 2016 10,000 people spontaneously came to pay tribute to Susan B. Anthony’s grave at Mt. Hope Cemetery. They placed their ‘I Voted’ stickers upon her headstone and expressed their pride and gratitude to America’s most famous suffragist. On November 9, the day after the election, the grave site, although still a gathering place, was far different. A collaborative production project with the Rochester Documentary Filmmakers Group, this film captures the actions and emotions of those two days. (PHOTO CREDIT: BRIAN STEBLEN)
“Death is the question beyond all questions. The unrelenting mystery; it is there, always,” explains University of Rochester professor of astrophysics Adam Frank, who is part of this documentary that asks: How do we live with death in our eye? Into the Night: Portraits of Life and Death features fascinating, unexpected voices from various walks of life: old and young, believers and nonbelievers, the dying and the healthy, well known and obscure.

A BEAUTIFUL WORLD: REBELS, RENEGADES AND WILD WOMEN SUNDAY, MARCH 3 AT 9PM ON AM 1370
Women throughout history have broken the rules and stepped outside conventional social norms to make history happen. This special investigates several women who stand out as the rebels of their time. Rebels, Renegades and Wild Women celebrates Women’s History Month with stories of powerful women throughout history: suffragette Susan B. Anthony (pictured below); female samurai Tomoe Gozen; animal rights activist Jane Goodall (pictured above); first African American female astronaut Mae Jemison; and Elena Favili and Francesca Cavallo, authors of the “Rebel Girls” series.

BREAKING THE PATTERN A panel of judges decides the fate of a young woman. A child of addicts and an ex-addict and ex-felon herself, she’s asking the court to trust her to become an attorney. The outcome of her case hinges on this: are we destined to repeat our patterns, or can we stray in surprising directions? It’s a question that’s increasingly relevant in an age when algorithms are trying to predict everything about our behavior.
THINGS LEFT UNSAID In any relationship, there are always things we don’t say, assumptions we make about people we love. But sometimes those assumptions are dangerously wrong. Invisibilia tells the story of a Taiwanese spy who infiltrates a family, and exposes how little they understand each other. And we meet an extreme daydreamer who keeps her fantasy life a secret from her husband and son.
THE STORIES WE TELL Sometimes we lose something so central that our very sense of self unravels, and we resort to extremes. Invisibilia talks to a 74-year old woman whose husband’s death has led her to skydiving and a beekeeper who thinks his hives have been stolen by mobsters. Then we travel to Mogadishu to learn about an uplifting reality show called “Inspire Somalia”.

RUTH ELAINE HOST OF SUNDAY SESSIONS
RETIRES
For the past 27 years Ruth Elaine has been broadcasting her show Sunday Sessions live from WRUR’s studio on State Street every Sunday evening, playing some of the best jazz you’ll ever hear. She’d start the evening with the show’s theme song – a jazzy instrumental tune – and then, in her sultry voice came a warm “Good evening and welcome to Sunday Sessions”. After more than two decades, Ruth hosted her last show on February 4, retiring from the airwaves.
“I enjoyed my time with WRUR enormously, having the opportunity to provide great programming and extraordinary music to my many listeners and fans,” said Ruth. “I will miss them and wish them well as every one of the numerous outstanding and hardworking employees and volunteers of WRUR/WXXI.” Sunday nights just won’t be the same without her. We will miss her and wish her the best. Acoustic Café will broadcast in her time slot – Sundays from 6-8pm.

Anthony Minghella’s stunning production of Puccini’s heartbreaking opera, an instant Met classic since its 2006 premiere, returns with Hui He and Ermonela Jaho in the tragic title role of the trusting geisha. Roberto Aronica and Luis Chapa alternate as her callous American lover, Pinkerton, and Jader Bignamini and Marco Armiliato conducts.
This masterpiece of dazzling vocal fireworks makes a rare Met appearance—its first in nearly 25 years—with Maurizio Benini on the podium. The all-star bel canto cast features Angela Meade in the title role of the murderous Queen of Babylon, who squares off in breathtaking duets with Arsace, a trouser role sung by Elizabeth DeShong. Javier Camarena, Ildar Abdrazakov, and Ryan Speedo Green complete the stellar cast. Live in HD
Christine Goerke sings her first Elektra at the Met in Patrice Chéreau’s landmark production, a sensation at its Met premiere last spring, which the Wall Street Journal called “revolutionary … a triumph on all fronts.” Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts Strauss’s shattering score, a tour de force for the singers and the orchestra alike.
Puccini’s grand spectacle of legendary China stars Oksana Dyka and Martina Serafin in the role of the ice princess and Aleksandrs Antonenko as the unknown prince who must thaw her heart or die. Maria Agresta, Hei-Kyung Hong, and James Morris are among the other remarkable artists featured in this cherished Franco Zeffirelli production, led by Carlo Rizzi and Marco Armiliato.
A winning cast comes together for Phelim McDermott’s clever vision of Mozart’s comedy about the sexes, set in a carnival-esque, funhouse environment inspired by 1950s Coney Island—complete with bearded ladies, fire eaters, and a Ferris wheel. Manipulating the action are the Don Alfonso of Christopher Maltman and the Despina of Tony Award–winner Kelli O’Hara, with Amanda Majeski, Serena Malfi, Ben Bliss, and Adam Plachetka as the pairs of young lovers who test each other’s faithfulness. David Robertson conducts. Live in HD
