THE BRAIN with
DAVID EAGLEMAN “WHAT IS REALITY”
Dr. David Eagleman, neuroscientist, New York Times best-selling author and a Guggenheim Fellow, will take you on an extraordinary journey, exploring how the brain, locked in silence and darkness without direct access to the world, conjures the rich and beautiful world we all take for granted. You’ll meet color synesthete Hannah Bosley, who always associates specific colors with letters and words and Robert Luke, a former inmate who suffered hallucinations in solitary confinement.
Dr. David Eagleman will be at Monroe Community College on April 27, serving as keynote speaker for MCC’s Scholars’ Day, with support from ESL Charitable Foundation. Tune in and learn more about how you can get tickets.

Dear Friends, I’m proud to share that WXXI has been nominated for six New York Emmy Awards. Our Music for Life: The Story of New Horizons documentary, which shares the heartwarming stories of seniors who found a passion for music through the formation of the New Horizons Norm Silverstein music ensemble, was nominated in the Arts: Program category. Our statewide homework help show, Homework Hotline, received a nomination for its Move to Include: 3D Printed Prosthetics segment, which spotlights Rochester Institute of Technology’s (RIT) work using 3D Printers to create plastic prosthetic hands for children who need them. Move to Include segments are produced in partnership with the Golisano Foundation, in support of an initiative designed to build a more inclusive community. Beginning With The End, directed by David Marshall and presented by WXXI, received four Emmy nominations. The documentary follows the experiences of a teacher and a group of high school students, who have enrolled in his Hospice Class at the Harley School. The winners will be announced at the New York Emmy Awards gala on March 19th and we’ll be sure to keep you posted! I’m also proud to report that WXXI has once again been recognized as a leader in collaborative journalism by the Corporation of Public Broadcasting (CPB). WXXI and public media partners WNED | WBFO Buffalo-Toronto and ideastream in Cleveland were awarded more than $356,000 by CPB to establish the Great Lakes Regional Journalism Collaborative. The two-year grant will support indepth reporting focused on the health and economic importance of the region’s major freshwater resources. If you made a pledge during our very short Winter Membership Campaign for WXXI Radio – thank you! We started on Ground Hog Day and we reached our goal the next afternoon. We asked listeners to pledge their support before the official start date of the drive – and over 1,100 listeners made the investment! That meant more of your favorite programs, such as Morning Edition, Connections with Evan Dawson, Open Tunings with Scott Regan, and more Classical music. Providing content that informs, entertains, and engages is at the core of what we do, and your support makes it all possible. Here’s a preview of what’s coming up from PBS and NPR (this was announced at the recent Television Critics Press Tour). PBS is looking forward to providing enhanced 2016 elections coverage. Also, there’s a new strategic partnership between PBS and NPR, which will enable us to share content across platforms and create a digital election hub with local and regional coverage. PBS also shared some upcoming programs you’ll want to add to your must-see list, including: Jackie Robinson, a Ken Burns film that examines the life and times of the baseball and civil rights legend (airing in April); Genius with Stephen Hawking, a series that revisits some of history’s notable scientific breakthroughs (airing late 2016); and Dark Angel, a drama about real-life Victorian serial killer Mary Ann Cotton, starring Downton Abbey’s Joanne Froggatt (airing in June). Speaking of Joanne and Downton Abbey, we say goodbye to the Crawley family this month. The finale for the Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning hit, which we have enjoyed for the last six years, airs Sunday, March 6 at 9 p.m. on WXXI-TV. I know we’ll all be watching! Best Regards,
Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org @normWXXI

Q&A WITH A WXXI Underwriter In 2013 Maria Klemperer-Johnson designed two classes around the project of building a tiny house. Today Hammerstone: Carpentry for Women, LLC, located in Trumansburg, continues to expand offerings for women interested in learning and developing carpentry skills. Maria tells us more: Q: What would you like the WXXI audience to know about Hammerstone? Through the teaching of excellent building skills, Hammerstone aims to empower women to use their bodies and minds for creative and useful ends. By increasing the skills of individual women, we hope to increase the number of women in the trades and ultimately change workplaces for women in and outside of the trades. Q. What distinguishes Hammerstone from other carpentry schools? Hammerstone is unusual in our mission. Most of our classes are for women only. Most co-ed carpentry or woodworking courses are dominated by men. This can be intimidating to women with no previous carpentry experience. We create a space where women feel comfortable learning carpentry skills at their own pace. Q. What are the most popular workshops and courses? Our most popular course is our 2-day basic skills workshop where students learn carpentry fundamentals while building a pair of sawhorses. Courses organized around tiny house construction (framing and trim classes) are also extremely popular because of the huge interest in tiny houses. Q. What is the most rewarding aspect of teaching for you? Watching students experience the same satisfaction I get from working with wood and tools gives me incredible joy. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a student struggling with a hand saw suddenly cut smoothly and easily through a piece of wood because of a few subtle adjustments. Q. Do you find that your students continue on with carpentry after attending a class? Yes! We have a Facebook group for alumnae where students share their recent woodworking projects and ask for advice on tool purchases. And we have a lot of students returning to learn more. Some former students now even work in our construction company, Hammerstone Builders. www.hammerstoneschool.com Maria Klemperer-Johnson, owner

What’s your American dream? Join WXXI in a national conversation about what it means to “make it” in the 21st century. We’re proud to join Re:Dream, a national project from KCPT in partnership with WETA, PBS SoCal, DPTV, and GPB that asks, “What dreams do you chase?” Re:Dream has produced 40 micro-documentaries telling the stories of individuals as they prepare for success, meet obstacles, and pursue their American dream. By sharing the hopes and dreams of people living in the United States, Re:Dream hopes to shed light on what barriers keep people down and what opportunities enable them to succeed. It aims to bolster community dialogue around the changing landscape of available opportunities in the 21st century.

THE STORY
WOMEN and ART
&
SUNDAY, MARCH 20 AT 8PM ON WXXI-TV Women’s artistic contributions have often been dismissed throughout history, yet the female perspective has played a critical role in shaping the visual culture of the modern world. In The Story of Women and Art, Professor Amanda Vickery (pictured) explores the story of female creativity through the ages with a fascinating art history tour from the Renaissance to the 20th century. Tackling the opinions of both art professionals and ordinary women, Vickery demonstrates how the stories behind women in art can provide crucial insight into the female psyche. More importantly, she shows how a familiarity with female artistry helps us to understand the ways societal attitudes toward women and their artistic endeavors have evolved throughout the years.
FOREVER WISDOM OF
DR. WAYNE
DYER
SUNDAY, MARCH 5 AT 12PM AND THURSDAY, MARCH 10 AT 8PM ON WXXI-TV At the time of his unexpected death last August, a program featuring the bestselling author, beloved spiritual teacher, and internationally renowned lecturer Dr. Wayne Dyer’s “greatest hits” was in the works. Envisioned as a celebration, the program would include the most beloved stories and wisdom teachings that he had presented over his past eight public broadcasting specials. With his passing, that project has now become a retrospective, memorial, and inspirational tribute to the commitment and ardent support he demonstrated for PBS. This inspirational memorial tribute includes memorable stories, both funny and soulful. Credit: Courtesy of Charles Bush

Women’s History Month Series One Take Doc:
Heart of a Dog Tuesday, March 8 at 7:00 P.M.
Artist Laurie Anderson creates a personal essay centering on her dog, Lolabelle, who passed away in 2011. Through hand drawn animation, 8mm home movies, witty narration, and original violin music, combined in a collage-like format, Anderson explores how stories are constructed and how we use them to make sense of our lives. Other films in the Woman’s History Month Series include: Dreamcatcher, Difret, Radical Grace, Sworn Virgin, and Dorothea Lange: Grab a Hunk of Lightning.
In the summer of 1970, photographer Mark Brady went on a road trip with one of his best friends. The pair traveled across America, and the result was an endless stream of anecdotes and hundreds of pictures. These pictures will be featured in The Little Café in March, with an artist reception from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, March 6. Additionally, WXXI Connections host Evan Dawson will lead a panel discussion about road trips, and how things have changed in America since Brady’s 1970 journey. The conversation begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 16 and is followed by a screening of 1970’s Five Easy Pieces, starring Jack Nicholson. Tickets are $8.
