GENIUS BY STEPHEN HAWKING WEDNESDAYS AT 9PM, MAY 18-JUNE 1 ON WXXI-TV

Credit: Bigger Bang

PBS and National Geographic have partnered on a six-part science series that aims to decode the mysteries of evolutionary biology, astrophysics and quantum mechanics. Presented and narrated by renowned theoretical physicist Professor Stephen Hawking (pictured), each episode challenges a different group of ordinary people to think like the greatest scientific minds in history in order to solve some of humanity’s most enduring questions. “It’s a fun show that tries to find out if ordinary people are smart enough to think like the greatest minds who ever lived,” explains Prof. Hawking. “Being an optimist, I think they will.”

Dear Friends, It’s been an award-winning few months for WXXI and I couldn’t be more proud of our staff for being recognized for the outstanding work they do. Norm Silverstein On March 19 we won four New York Emmys® – Music for Life: The Story of New Horizons won in the Arts: Program/Special category and Homework Hotline’s Move to Include: 3D Printed Prosthetics won in the Health/ Science: Program Features/Segment category. Two additional Emmys went to Beginning With the End, a documentary produced by Rochester independent filmmaker David Marshall and presented by WXXI.

On March 24 we learned that Second Opinion, our national healthcare series, and its host Dr. Peter Salgo, had been nominated for a Daytime Emmy® Award in the Outstanding Informative Talk Show Host category. The Second Opinion team and Peter are up against a solid list of other nominees which include: Dr. Mehmet Oz of The Dr. Oz Show, Larry King of Larry King Now, Steve Harvey of Steve Harvey, and The Chew co-hosts Mario Batali, Carla Hall, Clinton Kelly, Daphne Oz, and Michael Symon. Kudos go out to Peter and our Second Opinion team, as well as our local partners at the University of Rochester Medical Center, our production partner West 175 Productions, and our underwriter Blue Cross Blue Shield Association for receiving a well-deserved nomination for this most prestigious award. We’ll know the results on May 1, so be sure to check WXXI.org for updates on this national Emmy nomination. Also, our WXXI News Department and radio staff received word that four of their entries in the New York Associated Press Association (NYAPA) contest are finalists. The winners will be announced at the NYAPA award ceremony June 4. On another note, two of WXXI’s Arts InFocus segments were shared on PBS’s Facebook page. As a result, the Airigami segment saw nearly a quarter-million views, while the Rochester City Ballet segment generated another 75,000 views. If you haven’t seen these two segments, I encourage you to do so by visiting artsinfocus.tv. From the TV producers to the camera crew, the reporters to the music hosts, the engineers to the web team, our staff shows its dedication to providing the best in public broadcasting every day. While it’s nice to be honored by our peers, your ongoing support is the real applause for the work we do. Thank you! Best regards,

Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org @normWXXI

NEWS&EVENTS

Q&A WITH A WXXI Underwriter Nestled in historic Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, the Shaw Festival is one of the most celebrated theatre companies in North America and the second-largest repertory theatre company in Canada. On stage from April through October, the Festival features more than 60 actors in 10 shows on four stages – a must-attend event in the Niagara region. Laura Hughes, Senior Manager of Communications, at the Shaw Festival tells us what’s in store for 2016.

Q. What’s new this year at the Shaw Festival? In 2016 Shaw Festival celebrates its 55th anniversary. The season features a new adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland (pictured) created specifically for the Shaw Festival’s renowned Acting Ensemble. This magical musical experience delights adults and children alike with a combination of contemporary technology and old-fashioned magic. Also on the mainstage is the broodingly comic and brilliantly unsettling Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, taking audiences to the dark corners of Victorian London in one of Stephen Sondheim’s most celebrated musicals. For the full playbill, visit www.shawfest.com

Q. How are new productions selected each year? Each season is carefully curated by the Shaw Festival’s Artistic Director. Jackie Maxwell, who is in her final season as Artistic Director at the Festival, chose plays inspired by the wit and passion of George Bernard Shaw. The annual Festival offers a diverse collection of plays from the namesake’s lifetime, alongside modern writers who provocatively explore society and the celebration of humanity.

Q. Located in Ontario’s Niagara-on-the-Lake wine country, can you comment on other popular tourist options available to patrons of the Shaw Fest? Visitors to the Shaw Festival can take in a relaxing wine tour, visit one of the area’s many fine dining options, shop in the downtown, bike along the Niagara Parkway, or visit one of the historic sites such as Fort George. And the more adventurous visitors can experience the white water rapids of Niagara Falls with Whirlpool Jet Boats.

Mary Holley Named Volunteer of the Year

Longtime volunteer Mary Holley received the Charles M. Wise Volunteer of the Year award at WXXI and the Little Theatre’s Annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony on April 6. Recognized for her outstanding dedication to the station, Holley and more than 100 of the organization’s volunteers and staff attended the event at WXXI’s studios.

The Charles M. Wise Volunteer of the Year Award, named after the late Charles (Chuck) Wise – a loyal WXXI volunteer for many years, stands as a testament to Wise’s unwavering spirit of volunteerism. Each year, a committee of staff members from WXXI and The Little identifies one volunteer who has been an ambassador for their mission in our community. Mary has been a volunteer for WXXI for more than 28 years. Her volunteer work started in the mid-1980s when she began reading for Reachout Radio. In the late 1990s she expanded her volunteer role and began spending time in WXXI’s Creative Services department – managing the station’s press clipping files and proofing press releases, the monthly program guide, presentations, and other collateral materials. Other volunteers recognized during the awards ceremony included:

Mary DeFranco received the Troops Award

Advocates for kids are pushing for a new approach to combating underage prostitution: treating young people caught up in sex trafficking as victims, not delinquents. This documentary looks at how police and lawmakers are increasingly turning to a public health approach to help vulnerable young people break free of sex trafficking.

Scientists say most people on Earth will first experience climate change in terms of water — either too much or too little. This documentary explores some of the most pressing water problems and some innovative solutions by visiting two countries where water issues are critical: India and Israel. A vast and ecologically diverse country, India suffers from water problems found across the globe: flooding, drought, pollution, and lack of access by the poor.

FROM PAGE TO STAGE SATURDAY, MAY 21 AT 4:30PM CLASSICAL 91.5

Immediately following The Lyric Opera of Chicago’s presentation of Bel Canto, airing Saturday, May 21 at 1 p.m. on Classical 91.5, WXXI presents this hour-long special that traces the creation of composer Jimmy López’s opera Bel Canto. The opera is based on a novel, adapted from actual events. The Making of Bel Canto: From Page to Stage, hosted by Bill McLaughlin, examines the unique challenges and opportunities that come with each adaptation. You’ll meet all the principals through interviews with Reneé Fleming, Jimmy López, Nilo Cruz, conductor Sir Andrew Davis, director Kevin Newbury, and others. The program features music from the premiere performances, as well as examples of the opera in development and other works by López. Photo: Andrew Cioffi

On the night of December 17, 1996, the residence of the Japanese Ambassador in Lima, Peru was seized by members of the Túpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement, an incident which seems even more terrifying today than it was in the last century. Some hostages were released over time, but the residence was occupied for over four months before the siege was ended in a government raid. In her novel Bel Canto, Pen/Faulkner Award winner Ann Patchett re-imagines these events, focusing not on the terror but on the personalities and relationships that develop between captors and captives. With the character of Roxanne Coss, the opera world’s most revered soprano, Patchett introduces one significant dramatic element to her story. Ms. Coss had been hired to perform as a gift to the evening’s guest of honor, and her beautiful singing mesmerizes not only the invited guests but also the terrorists crouched in hiding. Taking cues from magical-realist themes, the opera shows the power of music to bridge gaps between language, culture, class, and ideology; the power of music to be the catalyst that allows relationships and bonds to form where even simple communication is otherwise difficult.

WILLESDEN LANE MOTHER’S DAY SPECIAL SUNDAY, MAY 8 AT 1PM ON CLASSICAL 91.5

BACKSTAGE PASS WITH

CARILLON TUBA QUARTET FRIDAY, MAY 20 and Sunday, May 22 AT 1PM ON CLASSICAL 91.5

Julia Figueras welcomes the Carillon Tuba Quartet from the Eastman School of Music with Stephen Cannistraci, who is currently interning for Classical 91.5. The group, which actually consists of four euphoniums and one tuba, performs regularly around Rochester and have placed in several brass and chamber music competitions. They’re still awaiting a first place finish. Quartet pictured here with University of Rochester President Joel Seligman at a function in New York City. (L-R) Aaron Eckert, William Worthy, Stephen Cannistraci, University of Rochester President Joel Seligman, Andrew Payton.

Based on her book The Children of Willesden Lane, host Mona Golabek (pictured) tells the story of her own mother, a Jewish teenager living in Vienna just before WWII, who holds onto her music to survive. Musical selections include Clare de Lune, Moonlight Sonata, Grieg’s Piano Concerto and more. The Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra joins Ms. Golabek as she tells this very personal story of her mother’s life.
