ALICE’S RESTAURANT
50TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT Fifty years ago, in 1965, Arlo Guthrie took out the trash following a “Thanksgiving dinner that couldn’t be beat.” The hilarious account of actual events that precluded Arlo from military service in 1966 went on to become Alice’s Restaurant, a platinum-selling record in 1967, and a full-length motion picture in 1969. Today it’s as much a part of Thanksgiving tradition as cranberry sauce. For the first time in a decade, folk icon Arlo Guthrie brings The Alice’s Restaurant Massacree in its entirety to the stage. On the 50th anniversary of Arlo’s arrest for littering, WXXI-TV presents this special concert.

Dear Friends, One of public media’s greatest strengths is its ability to be responsive to current issues and needs. Sometimes, our programming can even help save a life. Recently, our national health series, Second Norm Silverstein Opinion, produced a special episode in partnership with the American Heart Association (AHA). CPR in America had a lofty goal – to teach all of America Hands-Only CPR™. It shared AHA’s new CPR guidelines for 2015, which are evaluated and updated every five years. Produced here in Rochester at our WXXI studios, the special aired on more than 100 PBS stations across the country, including major cities such as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Houston. The show not only taught viewers how to perform Hands-Only CPR and how to use an AED, but it also shared incredible stories about three families who dealt with cardiac arrest emergencies. If you didn’t have a chance to watch the program, it’s now available to view online at SecondOpinion-tv.org. I encourage you to watch and learn. It’s a lifelong skill that can truly help save a life. In recognition of Veterans Day, WXXI will present a remarkable documentary at the Little Theatre on November 10 at 6:30 p.m. American St. Nick tells the true story of a handful of American soldiers who, during the chaos of war, brought Christmas back to the children of a small Luxembourg town – and helped preserve a holiday tradition that continues to this day. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the American St. Nick Richard Brookins (a Pittsford resident), documentarian Tim Gray, and American St. Nick author Peter Lion. You can learn more about the screening at WXXI.org/ events. WXXI-TV will also be airing this film next month, so be sure to look for it in your December Program listings. American St. Nick is presented by WXXI’s Veterans Connections in partnership with M&T Bank. Our Veterans Connections initiative is designed to help bridge military and veteran needs with community support and awareness. Through special TV, radio and online programming, documentary films, group discussions, news features, and a comprehensive web site (WXXI.org/veterans), Veterans Connections works to create a community platform to connect veterans with valuable resources. November is a time of thanks and we have much to be thankful for including your support of WXXI and the Little Theatre. Our work throughout the year – including projects like CPR in America and American St. Nick couldn’t be accomplished without the generosity of our members. Thank you, and best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday! Best Regards,
Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org @normWXXI

Q&A WITH A WXXI Underwriter Founded in 1975 by chief conservator Susan Blakney, West Lake Conservators provides preservation services to a wide variety of materials, historic artifacts, art, and memorabilia. Following a 6-year apprenticeship in London, Susan returned to her roots in the Finger Lakes and established the business in Skaneateles with her sister, Margaret Sutton, as her first apprentice. Q. What would you like the WXXI audience to know about West Lake Conservators? We have an internationally trained preservation staff comprising multiple specialties. We strictly adhere to the American Institute of Constructors (AIC) code of ethics. Whether of monetary, historic, or sentimental value, we treat all projects with equal care and respect. Susan Blakney (LEFT) and Margaret Sutton at the John D. Barrow Art Gallery in Skaneateles
Q. What types of services do you provide? Preservation Treatments: Conserving and restoring easel paintings, murals, frames, painted objects, historic theater curtains, textiles, paper-based documents, photographs; Collection Management: Documenting surveys, including Condition, General/Storage, Identification, Environmental, and Inventory; Disaster Recovery: Developing Disaster Plans, on-site remediation, insurance claims, packing out, emergency stabilization; Preservation Framing: Using current technology for Climate Control and archival materials; selecting aesthetically and historically appropriate replacement reproduction frames. Q. Are you proud of any major undertakings? Several! First, developing and publishing a long-range fundraising plan for treating most of the 350 paintings in the collection of the John D. Barrow Art Gallery in Skaneateles. Second, the conservation treatment of the monumental and highly valued Thomas Cole painting of Letchworth State Park that once hung in the Seward House Historic Museum in Auburn. Lastly, research and introduction of new painting support materials for murals and oversized paintings. Q. What are the greatest challenges of your business? Undoing or reversing nonprofessional treatments, performed poorly with non-reversible materials and no documentation. Some treatments, often done with good intentions, are detrimental and may be impossible to reverse. westlakeconservators.com To learn more about underwriting on WXXI, email underwriting@wxxi.org

Celtic Woman DESTINY MONDAY, NOVEMBER 30 AT 8 P.M. ON WXXI-TV
THE PILGRIMS
AMERICAN EXPERIENCE TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 24 AT 8PM ON WXXI-TV
Arguably one of the most fateful and resonant events of the last half millennium, the Pilgrims’ journey west across the Atlantic in the early 17th century is a seminal, if often misunderstood episode of American and world history. “The Pilgrims”, a two-hour documentary by Ric Burns, explores the forces, circumstances, personalities, and events that converged to exile the English group in Holland and eventually propel their crossing to the New World; a story universally familiar in broad outline, but almost entirely unfamiliar to a general audience in its rich and compelling historical actuality.
Filmed in Dublin’s Round Room at the historic Mansion House, the Celtic Woman performed to a welcoming and enthusiastic audience against a video screen backdrop that displayed the natural wonders of Ireland. The concert features brand new material along with some new arrangements of some of their most loved tracks from throughout their ten year career. Performing that night were Máiréad Nesbitt, Susan McFadden, Mairéad Carlin and the newest addition to the troupe, Éabha McMahon. The concert also features a special appearance by original Celtic Woman, Meav. Photo: Courtesy of Kip Carroll

Beyond Gay Marriage
With Good Reason
The June 26, 2015 Supreme Court decision to legalize same-sex marriage in all 50 States shifts the terms of the debate about where the gay rights movement should be putting organized energy and money. A critical look at the Gay Marriage movement that asks: Why is gay marriage the primary issue of the Gay Community? Is Same Sex marriage really the issue most LGBT people are interested in? And what effect does the funding and emphasis on Same Sex Marriage have on displacing other crucial life and death LGBT issues?
In this special episode of With Good Reason we focus on a single troopship, the General Nelson M. Walker, and a few of the soldiers who traveled on it. Also included in the hour-long program are stories about women journalists who covered the Vietnam War, and the risk factors for the children of military mothers, who are deployed around the world.

presents MONTEVERDI VESPERS MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2 AT 8 P.M. ON CLASSICAL 91.5
Last April Pegasus Early Music performed Monteverdi’s Vespers at Hochstein Performance Hall. Paul O’Dette conducted two dozen of the country’s finest musicians in this beautiful concert. Monteverdi’s Vespers is, according to many, one of the most perfect pieces of music ever written. It ranges from the most intimate solos and duos to a splendid full double choir piece, including complicated counterpoint and a sublime instrumental sonata with a choir of sopranos singing chant above it. Classical 91.5’s Brenda Tremblay (right) hosts. Recorded by Carl Pultz, Alembic Productions.

Benedict Cumberbatch (BBC’s Sherlock, The Imitation Game) takes on the title role of Shakespeare’s great tragedy. As a country arms itself for war, a family tears itself apart. Forced to avenge his father’s death but parallelized by the task ahead, Hamlet rages against the impossibility of his predicament, threatening both his sanity and the security of the state. Giselle 12 p.m. Sunday, November 1 6 p.m. Tuesday, November 3 AT THE LITTLE THEATRE TICKETS: $20 GENERAL ADMISSION, $18 FOR MEMBER OPERA AND SENIORS ORDER TICKETS ONLINE AT TheLittle.org The young peasant girl Giselle dies when she learns that the man she loves, Albrecht, has betrayed her. Against her own will, she joins the Wilis — vengeful spirits who now turn against Albrecht and condemn him to dance until he dies of exhaustion. This treasure of romantic ballet is one of the oldest and greatest in classical repertoire, touching upon the great romantic themes: A doomed love affair ending in tragedy, a dive into fantasy and ultimate redemption through the power of love. The Bolshoi is renowned for its intimate and emotionally intense interpretation of this beloved drama.

TIME SENSITIVE MATERIAL
The 2015-2016 season of the Metropolitan Opera radio broadcasts begins on December 5, with its new host, Mary Jo Heath behind the microphone, as the fourth full-time radio host in the Met’s history. The announcement came in August 2015 when Heath, who was senior radio producer for the Met for nine seasons, was named to succeed Margaret Juntwait, who passed away in June.
Meet Mary Jo Heath: Voice of the Metropolitan Opera How do you get from Norman, Oklahoma to the Met? Via Rochester of course! –By Ruth Phinney, Classical 91.5 Program Director
If her name rings a bell, that’s because she served as a host at WXXI-FM while she was working on her Ph.D. in Music Theory at the Eastman School of Music in the late 1980s. Mary Jo is “obnoxiously proud of being from Norman, Oklahoma” where she received two degrees in music. She took piano lessons for 20 years and voice for 10, and her teachers there encouraged her to “jump into a bigger pond.” Once she got to Eastman, she enrolled in voice lessons “just for fun and to keep me practicing” and told us, “It was a lucky bit of serendipity that they assigned me to (study with) Renée (Fleming).”
Heath says that she never sang with Renée, except during those lessons, and she’s never sung on the Met stage either. “It’s scary enough to stand out there. I have GREAT respect for the singers who go out there and give their all every night.” When asked her if a Ph.D. in Music Theory helps her in her hosting, Heath said, she approaches the broadcast by starting “with the opera score – looking through it, listening, taking notes. That’s a different starting point from my commentators, and it makes for some interesting discussions.” Preparation for the Saturday matinees begins in the summer when commentator Ira Siff delivers his ideas for commentary to senior producer Ellen Keel, who starts to combine them with the synopsis. During the fall, the team reviews every single script, refining and working through new ideas. Heath says that she is honored to have been chosen to follow these “wonderful hosts who brought their own personalities, experiences and points of view to the job,” and expects she’ll find her own rhythm once she has some broadcasts under her belt. “For me, coming to work and hearing the best singers and the best opera orchestra in the world every day is really inspiring.” When asked what her former teacher and long-time friend Renée Fleming said when the announcement of her appointment came out, Heath said, “I got a lovely text from her – she was thrilled.” We at WXXI are thrilled for her as well, and we all look forward to hearing Mary Jo every week on the Metropolitan Opera Radio Broadcasts, Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. beginning December 5. photo: Jonathan Tichler/Metropolitan Opera
