NOVEMBER 2016
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 28 AT 8PM ON WXXI-TV Hailed by critics as one of the greatest concert films ever made, the Last Waltz was a concert by the Canadian-American rock group The Band, held on Thanksgiving Day in 1976, at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. It was advertised as The Band’s “farewell concert appearance” with more than a dozen special guests, including Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Emmylou Harris, Ringo Starr, Ronnie Hawkins, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, Neil Diamond, The Staple Singers, and Eric Clapton. The film, directed by Martin Scorsese, features concert performances, intermittent song renditions shot on a studio soundstage, and interviews with members of The Band. < Richard Manuel, Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Levon Helm and Garth Hudson of The Band. In September WXXI hosted its 50th Anniversary Open House,
welcoming the community into the station for a day of free, family fun. PBS Kids’ characters including Nature Cat, Curious George, and Peg + Cat greeted our youngest attendees, while guests of all ages had a chance to meet WXXI radio and TV hosts, walked the sets of Homework Hotline and Need to Know, saw Open Tunings’ host Scott Regan produce his WRUR-FM Saturday morning show, and participated in lots of fun hands-on activities. More than 5,000 people attended the open house, and if you were one of them – we hope you had a great time! SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR OPEN HOUSE SPONSORS
SUCCESS!

DEAR FRIENDS, After an unprecedented campaign for the White House, November 8 is almost here. I hope our balanced and respectful reporting has given you the information you need to make an informed choice on Election Day. This includes our live coverage of the Presidential Debates Norm Silverstein from PBS NewsHour and NPR, our own Voice of the Voter debates, insightful discussions on Connections with Evan Dawson, and stories from our WXXI News reporters, including our Capitol Bureau Correspondent Karen Dewitt. You can expect this same level of quality coverage on Election Night. Starting at 8 p.m., WXXI News will report live from local campaign headquarters and provide results and analysis on local and national elections on AM 1370, online at WXXINews.org, and reports on WXXI-TV. You can also follow WXXI News and our reporters on Twitter and Facebook. It’s our mission to inform, educate, and engage our community. WXXI News fulfills that mission every day. The same holds true for our many outreach initiatives such as Move to Include, Veterans Connections, and American Graduate. Last month I was invited by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) to talk about the impact of our Move to Include initiative at a PBS General Managers strategy session in Washington, DC. With funding support from the Golisano Foundation, this multi-media project uses television, radio, film, and digital content to engage audiences and encourage thoughtful and inclusive attitudes toward people with different abilities. Ann Costello, Director of the Golisano Foundation, joined me in this presentation, where we shared our evaluation of the first two years of the project. Our findings proved that high-quality media can move people to learn, listen, and change. We also presented our New York Emmy award-winning Move to Include segment on RIT’s 3D printed prosthetic hand. (You can find that segment and learn more about the initiative at MoveToInclude.org.) On the topic of partnerships – the Little Theatre will once again be partnering with Geva Theatre Center on a series of screenings this month in celebration of their performance of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. The Little will present four Sidney Poitier films throughout November in conjunction with the play – Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, In the Heat of the Night, To Sir with Love and A Raisin in the Sun. There will also be select post-film discussions and Geva ticket giveaways. To find out more and how to get a discount punch-card to all four films, visit TheLittle.org. Finally, if you made a pledge during our Fall Radio Membership drive last month, thank you! Your support for our services enables us to bring you indepth news, a wide variety of incredible music, entertaining and engaging television programs, and important outreach initiatives like Move to Include. All of us at WXXI and The Little wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving. We hope you enjoy the programs we have planned around the holidays, as well as all the great independent films we will be screening at The Little. Remember to vote on November 8 – then tune to WXXI that night for all the results! Best wishes for the holidays,
Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org | @normWXXI
NEWS&EVENTS
Q&A WITH A WXXI UNDERWRITER For nearly 60 years, Red Jacket Orchards in Geneva, N. Y., has been producing apples and summer fruits. Co-owner/CEO Brian Nicholson describes how the business has grown and how in his family the apples really don’t fall far from the tree! Q. Red Jacket Orchards is a family-owned operation. Who are the key players? My father, Joe, literally brought the third generation— my brother, Mark, and me — into the business in 1972, when he moved back to the farm from metro NYC. Today, Dad runs the farm while Mark directs the fresh business sales, procurement, and industry relations. They leave all the other fun stuff to me as the CEO. Q. Your products are carried far beyond the Finger Lakes Region. What is the distribution? We’re really proud of the fact that when my grandparents purchased the farm in 1958, they sold out of a 20x20 roadside shed. Now you can find our unique fresh fruits and 100% juice products from Texas to Maine. Q. How has production changed over the years with the growth of the company? We used to grow on big old trees on 100 acres and make cider in a barn. I helped my grandfather fill jugs with a garden hose. Today we farm, under the strictest food safety guidelines, using high-tech plantings that utilize sustainable methods on over 500 acres. Our natural juices are made in a state-of-the-art production facility (LEED certified), using 100% green energy. Q. What would you like everyone to know about Red Jacket Orchards? We are looking forward to continuing to grow and to giving back. We are passionate about making great healthy products for our families and community. We love this region and take pride in employing the best local talent. They deserve all the credit. So thanks to the Red Jacket Staff! www.redjacketorchards.com BRIAN NICHOLSON , CO-OWNER/CEO

OPERA SINGER RENÉE FLEMING IS JUST ONE OF EIGHT GUESTS FEATURED IN THIS HOLIDAY SPECIAL.
Music can mark a momentous time in your life, or spark a memory from your past. And sometimes it changes our lives in a profound way. In Giving Thanks to Music eight individuals from different walks of life share something they all have in common: the profound value classical music has had for them. As these outstanding people from the worlds of poetry, music, opera, film, theatre, humanitarian aid, and radio and television news reveal their experiences, we take a moment to give thanks for the music that has enriched our lives.
